Indie’s memory will live on
Pink balloons are released at the funeral of Indie Rose Taurima in Mareeba on May 24. Photo by Peter Roy.
The memory of the Tableland’s favourite little battler will help other kids fighting sickness and their families. Indie Rose Taurima passed away in the early hours of May 18, just days before her third birthday. On Saturday May 24, hundreds gathered at St Thomas’ Church in Mareeba to farewell the little girl who touched hearts all over Australia. Indie had battled leukaemia for most of her life, with mum Jen Smith and dad Jai Taurima moving from Canberra to Sydney to support her at the Westmead Children’s Hospital. The IndieStructables charity team formed in Jen’s hometown of Mareeba shortly after
Indie’s diagnosis in late 2011 and dedicated themselves to raising funds to support Jen and Jai as they supported Indie. The IndieStructables raised more than $250,000 over the past three years with the support of the community. Part of their fundraising proceeds will now go towards the establishment of the Indie Rose Foundation. The Foundation will support Far North Queensland families that have to travel for the treatment of their sick children.
Mine controversy

T’S cut a swathe through properties in central Queensland, divided communities and cast a cloud over family’s futures and now coal seam gas has its sights set on Far North Queensland. Mantle Mining Corporation Limited has an exploration permit for coal over Mt Mulligan,
60km north west of Mareeba, home to Queensland’s worst mining disaster. The permit allows the company exclusive rights to explore for specific minerals within a designated area but it does not permit mining, nor does it guarantee a mining lease will be granted. It expires in December 2015. Coal seam gas exploration is shrouded in controversy but Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom
Gilmore urged the traditional owners not to dismiss it immediately. “Rather, they need to enter into carefully conducted dialogue with the potential developers to find out what opportunities there are,” Cr Gilmore said. “That dialogue should reside around a number of things including protecting values like heritage and environment and job opportunities for the

The trek has become the largest single fundraising venture for the RFDS each year and, in its history, has raised more than $22 million. As a condition of entry, cars must donate a minimum of $7,500. Before they begin the trek, Gavin and Stephen, based at Wamuran and Mareeba respectively, will first drive from Wamuran to Alice Springs, leaving on May 28. B-Doubles quiet By Boyd Robertson The beginning of the 2014 cane season heralds the opening of the controversial B-Double truck route through the towns of Mt Molloy and Julatten, but new quiet vehicles and rains have softened the impact on residents. Residents of two towns concerned about the increased heavy traffic are maintaining that risks remain while others are saying the trucks go by unnoticed. Tableland farmers began shipping their cane on the heavy B-Double trucks down the Rex Range to Mossman Mill, owned by Mackay Sugar, two weeks ago. Freight company Qube Logistics operates a fleet of 23 heavy trucks in the TablelandsMossman region, with the actual number of
vehicles on the road varying day-to-day. Rains early in the season appear to have reduced the total amount of trucks travelling through the towns last week, and the handful of vehicles that have come through town been less noisy than expected. Scott Peters, the manager of the National Hotel, said the B-Doubles were so quiet as to almost be unnoticeable. “They come past every half an hour or so but you can barely hear them,” he said. “They’re quieter than V8 Landcruisers, you barely notice them.” Despite this, some residents are saying sooner or later the impacts of the new route will become clear. Mt Molloy resident Ben Bloorer, who runs the Opal Bar jewellery shop on Main Street,
said the trucks posed a massive safety risk for pedestrians and other road users. “The issue of safety I think is my number one priority,” he said. “I’ve got three kids that cross the road on bikes to get to school and I’m very concerned about them doing so with these trucks coming through town in these sorts of numbers. “There’s kids, other road users and the problem of these trucks navigating single-lane bridges and the Rex Range.” Fellow resident John Brisbin also said the quietness of the trucks was the least of his concerns. “Everyone’s impressed with the new trucks but it’s early days yet – we’ll see what the impacts are when they start coming through at full levels.”

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Financial mismanagement On Monday, the day before releasing his budget, after having a glass or two of French chamfers and smoking a couple of fine Cuban cigars, the world’s greatest Treasurer approved the despatch of the RAAF VIP jet (Gravy Plane) to fly to Perth to carry four Coalition MP’s and eight staff back to Canberra. The cost to us taxpayers was $140,483. QANTAS and Virgin had seats available at a maximum $334 per head, total cost $4,008. Tighten your belts Australia everyone has to share the burden. John Santowski, Mareeba. Who do they work for? Having seen the budget, it’s looking more as if nobody will be benefiting apart from big business. The new budget looks more like a continuing assault on the young, the unemployed, pensioners and Australian families. Ever since the last elections, our Federal Government doesn’t seem to be on the right track with their policies. What’s more, they don’t seem to be listening to us. For instance, funding cuts to health and education services, and selling our public utilities and other public assets to private companies doesn’t sound like a good idea. This leaves us open to price rises or poorer service provision, particularly in regional areas like the Tablelands. Neither does illegal and

brutal treatment of refugees, contempt for our natural heritage by dredging and dumping toxic dredge spoils onto Great Barrier Reef World Heritage property, withdrawal of funding for our Environmental Defender’s Offices, attempts to delist Tasmania’s World Heritage forests, ignoring the reality of Climate Change by supporting massive expansion of corporate coal mining and dangerous CSG fracking and so on. Is it our responsibility and our duty as Australian citizens, to keep tabs on our elected representatives? Is it our responsibility to remind them, that they are, above all else, public servants? And is it right to say that our representatives in Parliament are actually employed by us, the tax payers, to act on our behalf rather than that of big foreign corporations. It may also be our responsibility to inform our representatives of our concerns with issues that affect all ordinary Australians. Our representatives are among the highest paid in the world, and an important part of their job is to listen and genuinely take our concerns on board. Again, it seems that our politicians aren’t listening. Only a couple of months ago public concern about inappropriate and unfair government policy led to the March in March signifying a declaration of no confidence in the Federal Government. Eight hundred people turned out in Cairns. A total of one hundred thousand people marched in all capital cities and regions across Australia with
thirty to fifty thousand people on the Streets of Melbourne alone. Our representatives in Parliament pretended that it didn’t happen. Surely, it’s our job as Australian citizens to hold them accountable. If you’re concerned about expectations of government and how we can improve on the current situation, to ensure our voices are heard and what we stand for is respected by our elected leaders, Please contact me - Alan Isherwood on 40 912 310 or arisher45@internode.on.net Alan Isherwood, Atherton Wheelbarrow Race 2014 – well done What a wonderful event, again. The “Unanimous” decision arrived at to maintain the subject parcels of land as Rural Zone, GQAL, under the Draft Planning Scheme 2012, is the only appropriate decision which could have been arrived at under the circumstances. The decision was based on consideration of a large amount of factual material contained in the Planning Officer’s Report, an Appeal Case, and various Planning Schemes. It is not just a victory for Peter and Louise Pensini who fought through the Planning and Environment Court to successfully have overturned the 2011 TRC decision to approve development of the land into a Rural Residential Subdivision, but also a victory on behalf of all Tablelanders who want to ensure that only sustainable, logical and necessary development takes place - and to preserve our unique GQAL food bowl and wonderful environment for the current and future generations. Hopefully the decision will send a strong and clear message to landowners, developers and potential future Councillors, that the days of unsustainable, illogical and unnecessary development of GQAL are over. It does not matter what any GQAL is used for, to carve it up for unnecessary and unsustainable developments of any type is not acceptable. Requirement for future developments in the TRC area will be inevitable. But they must be suitably located and only approved when appropriate and necessary. Trevor Sorenson, Atherton

Bypass proposal A diagram of the heavy freight bypass through Mareeba proposed by Cardie Peters. By Boyd Robertson An idea to turn a rarely-used rail corridor through Mareeba into a highway bypass could seriously relieve congestion in Byrnes Street. The idea, proposed by Mareeba resident Cardwell “Cardie” Peters, would see the rail corridor replaced with a road from the Kennedy Highway turnoff all the way through the town’s CBD and rejoin the Mulligan Highway on the north side of Granite Creek, near the Mareeba Industrial reserve. The concept already has the support of Member for Cook David Kempton and Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore. Mr Peters said a new bridge could be built
across Granite Creek if necessary. In a letter to Mr Kempton, Mr Peters said that Byrnes Street had become heavily congested ‘due to the volume of trucks, four wheel drives and cars’. His idea for the bypass would take heavier vehicles off Byrnes Street, in addition to allowing direct access to Lindsey Transport and the Mareeba Industrial Estate. The rail corridor through Mareeba is currently being considered for sale by the Queensland Government, and part of it supports a twice-weekly Savannahlander ride from Cairns to Forsayth. Mr Peters acknowledges that this is a significant snag in the plan but maintains the idea could be put to use should the rail line ever stop being
from Chewko Road to Mareeba-Dimbulah Road that we won’t live to see and would be very expensive.” Member for Cook David Kempton also supported the idea in principle but said it needed “proper investigation”. “I support the concept of a bypass on the basis of creating a link for B Doubles and road trains as well as increasing safety,” he said. “Whether the rail corridor might meet this need is a matter for proper investigation and will require input from council, transport operators and farmers. “I will certainly push the matter as hard as I can if it is what the wider community wants.”

Beard capital of Australia Queensland’s highest town Ravenshoe, which claims the undisputed title of “Beard Capital of the Nation”, will be put to the test on July 12 this year. Hurling a challenge to all Australians last year, the Ravenshoe region’s hirsuted gents lined up for a mass photo outside Queensland’s highest hotel. A total of 62 bearded blokes aged from about 17 to 80 were snapped together for the first time. Co-organisers of the historic photo session, local regional councillor Shaaron Linwood and Ro Mountney, reckon that despite the high turnout for the group shot last year, only about half the
region’s bearded blokes fronted for the photo. Cr.Linwood said she could not understand why other bearded youth and men sat on the sideline while the photo was taken. “You’d reckon every man worth his while would want to be in that unique Australian photo, “ she chided. So, in an attempt to get more bearded gents in town, there’s another photo shoot to be held in Ravenshoe’s main street late Saturday afternoon, July 12. This time, as an incentive, the organisers are going to have a scout to hand out awards to the

Visitors from other parts of Australia are encouraged to take part in a second photo the same day, to share in Ravenshoe’s hairy experience. It’s expected numbers this year will be swollen by bushy visitors from other parts of the Atherton Tablelands, Cairns and Innisfail. The gathering of the beards is part of the Beards, Bards and Bubbles Weekend of activities in Ravenshoe in July including among other things: a scarecrow competition, bush bards competition and recitals (original works), lim-

$500,000 super machine By Boyd Robertson
It might not give you super-powers, but it might save your life. Atherton Hospital’s pathology lab is showing off their latest high-end gizmo – a Beckman Coulter AU40 biochemistry analyser. The table-sized device shines a laser through a sample of a patient’s blood to detect diseases, poisons, drugs and other issues like sugar levels and protein imbalances. The entire process is managed automatically – scientists only have to load a rack of samples into the analyser and the machine’s robotic arms whir into life, mixing the samples with one of the 80 onboard reagents to produce a result. The device’s modular design means bits and pieces can be swapped out as needed for different tasks. The analyser, which was designed and built in Japan, comes with a price tag of about $500,000. ing scientist and says the analyser usually processes the blood samples of about 70 people a day and is extremely useful. “This machine can be used to diagnose just about anything,” she said. “Between the biological samples, the reagents, the robot arms and the lasers, there’s a fair chance you’d get superpowers if you were to trip and fall onto it,” she joked. “In a way we feel like superheroes here in the lab because we do so much behind the scenes – about 70 per cent of all diagnoses are made through pathology tests in machines like these.” The pathology lab is one of Atherton Hospital’s most vital facilities – its presence means the hospital can also support chemotherapy and dialysis units and its staff is also available on-call. The Atherton Hospital pathology lab received their analyser after the Innisfail Hospital’s lab, which means “someone else got to work out all the kinks in how to use it,” according to Ms Bullemor.

Record breaking mum By Lea Coghlan
WHEN Sonya Alba-Miller crossed the finish line at the Great Wheelbarrow Race in Chillagoe, it was five out of five. Five race records from eight appearances. The race veteran loves running so when her husband Rob was unable to join her in a duo team due to injury running as a female solo was the next best thing. In the lead up to the event, Sonya, 35, who runs with the Adventure Sport NQ and Road
Runners clubs, hit the pavement notching up to 50km a week. In the month preceding the race, she ran 80km a week. “I am getting into endurance running and thought it would be a good challenge doing a three day event pushing a wheelbarrow,” Sonya said. “It sounds a bit crazy but I thought why not.” The mother-of-three said the first 44km leg from Mareeba to Dimbulah was the hardest. “I found the first day the hardest, getting used to the thought that you have to hold the wheelbarrow for 140km,” Sonya said.
“The arms were adjusting and the legs too. “The second day was the longest and I was struggling with the feet because of blisters. “You are out in the elements longer than anyone else being a solo runner so the heat gets to you, but I had an awesome support crew.” When she crossed the finish line in first place – slashing 11 minutes and 52 seconds off last year’s female solo record – it was all worth it. “It was amazing, I couldn’t wipe the smile off my face,” said Sonya, one half of the successful Sonlia Fashion label.
The female solo record sits alongside Sonya’s other race achievements, namely 2012 Mixed Duo with Rob, 2011 Ladies Team with Little Red Runners, 2012 Ladies Duo with Steph Inderbitzen and mixed team Emerald Springs Sprinters. As for next year, Sonya plans to be there. “My husband Rob is considering doing a solo so I think I owe him a support crew,” Sonya said. “You get hooked because the atmosphere is so amazing.”

THE COUNTDOWN IS ON…

Rostrum Voice of Youth
Dear Readers and Friends, The countdown is on…only 11 months left of our European adventure. We all know that time flies, but to us it is just rocketing past our eyes. It has just been an amazing journey and the bucket list just keeps growing. We keep discovering new and exciting things in and around our neighbourhood and I just love and am passionate about sharing them with our travelexperience.com clients. I am very excited and proud of the Bavarian Christmas Magic tour I have put together and will be personally escorting in December. I have designed it to be very relaxed but at the same time will showcase many different parts of this amazing country. The magic of Christmas really needs to be experienced hands on and is very difficult to explain. The traditions are hundreds of years old and the local folk are very proud to keep them going from year to year. Christmas in Bavaria is not about the 25th of December, but about the spirit of the event that starts at the beginning of the month and goes right through to mid-January. We still have a few spots available for anybody looking for something very special. We are sure you will not be disappointed... contact the team in Atherton or Mareeba.
Rostrum Voice of Youth is a national speaking competition held every year. Mareeba State High School had five young speakers attend the first round of the competition held at St Monica’s, Cairns on 3rd May. All students had to prepare a six minute speech from a selection of topics. Two of our students, Mateen Latif and Finn Weaver were winners of their heat and then competed in the Regional Final on 17th May. In addition to the 6 minute prepared speech, the finalists had to also deliver a 3 minute ‘Short Notice’ speech with only 15 minutes preparation. Mateen came second on the day and is now Reserve State Finalist! Should the winner not be able to compete, he will go the State Finals in Brisbane. Pictured above are Regional Finalists Mateen Latif and Finnian Weaver with their certificates.

It is an initiative is the Australian Road safety Foundation, and calls for all road users to promise themselves, their family and friends to consciously drive safely and obey all road rules. In this final issue of The Express before the event, we see the roll the Queensland Ambulance service has in road crashes. Gavin Rablin officer in charge of Mareeba QAS gives a retrospect on the consequences of life and death in road crashes. In support of Fatality Free Friday on 30 May, Queensland Ambulance Service paramedics are asking that local drivers don’t meet them by accident. QAS Mareeba Officerin-Charge Gavin Rablin said each year paramedics across Queensland are confronted by too many patients with traumatic injuries as a result of road traffic crashes. “We are joining the call for motorists to focus on safe driving and obeying road rules in an effort to achieve a fatality-free day on 30 May,” he said. “Road traffic crashes don’t only hurt the people in them. They have a lasting effect on the fire-fighters, paramedics, bystanders and families involved. “We are pleading with motorists to take care out there on our roads, whether it’s slowing down and driving to the conditions, being more patient, or taking care at level crossings,” Gavin said. “People also need to ensure they are prepared for their journeys by using seatbelts and restraints at all times, securing lug-

Innovation on display at Expo
Drones and hot soup might have seemed an unlikely combination at this weekend’s Tablelands Innovation Expo but the wintry weather didn’t deter stoic Malanda residents and visitors from Cairns and other regions of the Tablelands, from attending the event and enjoying some hearty country hospitality. There were a large variety of businesses participating in the Expo – from the Australian Association of Healing Touch and TRC’s Health and Wellbeing Unit, through to Yuruga Nursery and its spin-off company Clonal Solutions Australia. Apart from being a multi-million dollar company Clonal Solutions has cloned cocoa, coffee, Indian Sandalwood, African Mahogany and Teak for mass production as well as Saltgrow eucalypts which help rehabilitate saline land. Broken Nose Vanilla also had a presence at the Expo. This awardwinning local company has partnered with Nucifora Tea, Jaques Coffee, Mena Creek Honey and Plasdene, who specialise in recyclable glass packaging. Businesses such as FNQ Business Solutions showcased Xero, a cloud-based accounting program and People Oriented Design brought a fresh, tropical approach to architecture. The five themes of the Expo allowed for a variety of businesses and organisations to participate. The Tablelands Innovation Expo was formally opened by Professor Sandra Harding, Vice Chancellor
of James Cook University who also presented three awards for outstanding innovation in business. The winners were Mungalli Creek Dairy, People-Oriented-Design and Rainforest Bounty, prizes included a week’s cruise courtesy of Seaswift, a family trip to the outer reef from Quicksilver and a 2 night stay seaview apartment at the Cairns Beach Resort.

Kempton announces counselling funding for Tableland DAVID Kempton, Member for Cook, has welcomed the approval of more than $943, 000 towards a ‘vital’ counselling service at Mareeba. Communities Minister Tracy Davis recently approved $314, 470 per annum over the next three years for Mareeba Shire Council’s Tablelands Counselling and Support Service.
Mr Kempton said he was delighted by the news. “This sort of frontline service is critical to the health and wellbeing of the Mareeba community and something I have advocated hard for,” he said. “Support for those facing difficult social times or economic hardship is so important, particularly in regional towns which are often forgotten about. “This service offers services to all individuals and families including children and without the great work they do, the task of providing a better quality of life for our residents would be even more difficult. “Our Government values its community partners and is committed to continually supporting them.” He said issues surrounding funding for important social services like counselling and homelessness support programs had been a key issues raised at his recent public forum in Mareeba. “This is a positive sign for the region,” he said. “I have raised the issues of funding uncertainty for these services directly and am assured we are committed to continual support particularly in services tackling the big issues like homelessness.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore applauded the news. “With our region facing economic hardship and difficult times ahead, I am absolutely delighted such a significant program will be funded for the next three years,” he said.

The festival of the year By Carl Portella
THE skies above Dimbulah will explode in a spectacular fireworks display this Saturday, May 31, as the Dimbulah Lions Festival crown their new queen and king. Six girls have nominated for the title as well as two young men in the king competition, with the announcement the centrepiece of Dimbulah’s most spectacular social event. After the queen and king are crowned Clint Swanson, the owner of Mr Fireworks, will unleash the latest range of fireworks seen in Dimbulah. “The very latest fireworks we import from China, Germany and Japan will be on show plus some old favourites and the people at Dimbulah [Lions] Festival will be the first to see them,” Mr Swanson. “I am sure the audience will be very happy with what we have planned. “People at the smaller festivals seem to appreciate the displays more so than bigger events. “My grandfather started the company back in 1956 and we are the first ever registered and longest running Pyrotechnics Company in Queensland.” Reigning Dimbulah Lions Festival queen Selina Anziliero (pictured) said she had enjoyed her time as queen and had mixed feelings about relinquishing the title. “I’ve gained a lot of confidence in the last 12 months and just loved how the community comes together to make the festival a success”. The 2014 festival begins at 5pm with the street parade which will again feature a comedy float from locals Frank De Iacovo and Lenny Buljubasich. Previously the local pair has parodied the death of the pope, Mark Brandon ‘Chopper’ Read, Tony Abbott, the royal wedding and many other comical themes.
Returning in 2014 is festival favourite – the North Queensland Axeman’s Association’s, wood chopping display. Axeman Kenny Olney said interest in Australia’s oldest competitive sport remained at an all-time high despite the demise of the timber industry. “I think people recognise it is a pretty dangerous sort of sport and it takes a lot of practice and skill to be able to cut through the logs as quick as we do,” he said. “A good axeman can cut a log with a 250-millimetre diameter in half in 12 hits and through a 300 millimetre diameter log in between 18 and 22 seconds. “Wood chopping is like golf you have to perfect the swing to get it right and this year I will have 87 year old Martin Conole who’s been chopping for some sixty odd years and can still keep up.” “People come from everywhere for the festival and we have been really well received in the past.” Local singer Becci Nethery will entertain the crowd with a live performance on the night. Lion’s club president Jamie De Lai said the Dimbulah Lions Festival was an important part of the town’s history and was the biggest annual fundraiser for the local Lions club. “The tradition of the festival actually started as the tobacco festival, tobacco being the main industry of the past,” he said. “It has since become the Lions festival and has been amazingly supported by businesses and residents of both Dimbulah and the
Mareeba & Dimbulah Community Bank® branches
Tableland for a long time. “It really is like the town’s carnival. Everyone looks forward to it. “This year the Dimbulah Lions club festival theme is “The International Year of the Farming Family” and we’d like to celebrate with as many people as we can.” The Festival kicks off at 5pm and continues on into the night with food, live entertainment and heaps more for the whole family to enjoy.

IT’S that time of the year again for the mighty Dimbulah Lions Festival. As Dimbulah Lions President it gives me great pleasure and immense pride to once again extend an invitation to our local communities to attend this highly anticipated upcoming event on Saturday 31st May 2014. The Dimbulah Lions festival, a legacy of our club, will undoubtedly promise to be special, fun filled and memorable event for everyone in attendance. People tend to think of Lions International as solely a fundraising organisation, but at its core we are community service volunteers. We assist our community during emergencies and give a helping hand to the needy. When Lions members get in and help, we work through our club to make sure relief, aid, support and equipment goes to the people of the community. We are a small group of ordinary, generous and committed people “giving freely of their time, labour and means”. That’s one of our ethics and a very important one. It is why the community has faith that when they support us, we won’t waste their contribution. Until you make a deep and longstanding commitment to volunteering, it’s hard to understand how much every community needs volunteers. The community has reaped the rewards of this dedication and commitment through financial assistance or man-power. The club has remained the one steadfast identity in the Dimbulah community, ensuring the continuation of traditions such as the annual festival whilst continuing to provide much needed funds for all the community sports clubs, schools and community projects. Each member and volunteer gives use two more hands to do service in out wonderful community. RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS
TWO of the year’s biggest movies continue at Mareeba’s Rising Sun Cinema this weekend X MEN – DAYS OF FUTURE PAST is an awesome production , whichever way you look at it , and it’s all star cast., which includes Jennifer Lawerence, Hugh Jackman, James Mc Avoy and Michael Fassbender, provides superlative cinema entertainment In it’s final week is GODZILLA – another exceptional production. If you have not seen it , we can really recommend this powerful sci fi adventure flick.
X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST
THE ultimate X-Men ensemble fights a war for the survival of the species across two time periods. The X-Men join forces with their younger selves from the past in an epic battle that must change the past - to save our future. Review by Louise Keller: Happy to report this is a satisfying full throttle spectacular that tinkers with minds as the past and present intersect and the future of the mutants and mankind hangs in the balance. With director Bryan Singer comfortably back in the saddle, there’s a wondrous sense of scale about this ambitious Marvel adventure as the element of time travel to the 70’s offers a springboard for unbridled creativity and imagination. The plot may occasionally defy logic, but logic can be overrated; the brilliance of ideas and their execution is more than enough to make this X-Men fantasy an outright winner. Beginning in a bleak future where the desolate, miserable world is without hope, the story’s compass is put in train with the question ‘Is the future set; or can we change it?’ The fact that Hugh Jackman’s Logan/Wolverine, with his ability to regenerate is the one able to survive the treacherous journey through time, ensures

the appealing Jackman’s presence front and centre. His mission is to change a key event in the past involving Raven/ Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence). The inclusion of James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender as younger versions of Patrick Stewart’s Charles/Professor X and Ian McKellen’s Erik/Magneto is inspired and both deliver magnificently. The scene when the older Charles confronts his younger self is eerily good and Fassbender as the metal-controlling mutant has carte blanche to display his considerable charisma. The time travel adventure begins when Logan wakes up in a water bed beside a lava lamp and a pretty girl, a Roberta Flack hit playing on the radio. The fact that he looks the same despite the 50 year leap into the past is well handled, and the challenges he faces with the young Charles (who has not acquired the wisdom of his later years) are often amusing. We are in on the joke and this is part of the film’s charms and why it has so much appeal. The locations jump from New York, Moscow, China, Vietnam, Paris and Washington, where the extended and spectacular climactic sequences in front of the White House are set. This is a great example of how great special effects are used in line with the narrative and not for effects’ sake. All the X-Men characters pop up at some time or other but it’s the Big Five of Jackman, Stewart, McAvoy, Fassbender and Lawrence who keep the film’s heart pumping and elevate it to its max.

Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan shares the story of a local Relay team and their drive to make a difference.
Reasons we Relay
Many who give up their weekend to be a part of the Tablelands Relay For Life do it for one simple reason – to give hope to all Queenslanders affected by cancer. With more than 1200 people diagnosed with cancer in Far North Queensland each year, support and hope are vital. At Relay For Life people come together determined to change that statistic and fundraise in support of Cancer Council’s vision for a cancer free future. One Relay team dedicated to the cause is the Happy Hippies. This week, they shared their reasons for getting involved in the Tablelands Relay For Life, and hope that others will also register a team. As told by Happy Hippies team leader Trisha Spry: “This is the very first time that Happy Hippies have taken part in Relay and we are looking forward to it! We are a team, mainly made up of energetic year 10 students from Mareeba State School, myself, another mum and a teacher. We got involved because the kids wanted to help contribute in the fight against cancer. Many of them
were inspired by family members who have been affected by cancer. I think the experience will be character building for the students involved, and will give them a bit of insight into the local cancer support that we have here on the Tablelands. It’ll be a moving time meeting survivors and listening to their stories, celebrating the courageous people that have fought and overcome cancer, and giving support to the many people in our community fighting the battle right now. Relay is a fantastic, family friendly event that we can all participate in. You don’t even have to be fit and active, you just have to be enthusiastic and willing to fundraise. We know that every dollar we can help raise will be put to great use in the fight against cancer – and that is why we participate.” Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

GODZILLA A colossal ancient creature is accidentally awakened by mankind and seemingly leaves nothing but destruction in its wake.
Review by Louise Keller: It takes a while to get going but when it does, Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla fulfils expectations with a gigantic roar: spectacular visual effects, an enveloping dark production design and an outstanding score by Alexandre Desplat that screams its terror throughout. With its mega budget, it’s a far cry from the original 1954 Japanese film and certainly a leap above Roland Emmerich’s 1998 Hollywood version.

OSBORNE TABLELAND HOCKEY The U10’s again had some great games. Sharks took on the Atherton Raiders in what was a tense and exciting game. With Andrew Earl, Daniel Genge and Clairice Lucey playing some outstanding defence for the Sharks they kept Raiders to one goal only. Adam Keevers scored the sole goal for the Raiders. Tolga All Stars took on the might of the
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Sharks in the next game; again a hotly contested match. Oliver May, Lucy Edsen and Jack Curcio fought hard in defence but could not keep Robbie Masasso out of the box for the All Stars. The final score of the game was 1/nil to the All Stars but did not reflect the great skill shown by all players. In the last match of the U10’s the All Stars battled it out with the Raiders. Ryleigh Sheahan, Jack Fealy and Alex McGowan showed some great skills both in attack and defence and supported Trent Delai who scored the only game of the match. The Raiders were fantastic in defence and showed some excellent and defensive play. All three teams are showing real skill and determination with games being fiercely contested each week. The leader board is extremely tight with Sharks leading on 11 followed by All Stars on 10 and Raiders on 9. In the U13’s Emily Rivett, Alex Bew and Ella Curcio of Scorchers took on the might of the All Stars. The All Stars played very tactically with Abby Toshach, Hailey Fulgrabe and Maddie Hamilton scoring for the All Stars. Troopers took on Vikings in a thrilling, fast paced game with the final outcome not reflecting the intensity of the game. Ben Lowe scored the only goal for the Vikings whilst for Troopers Nick Edsen, Clem Lucey, Keelan Boyd and Jim Spencer all put goals away for their team. With a final score of 5/1 the Troopers remain on the top of the U13 ladder. Vikings and the All Stars are currently vying for 2nd and 3rd place with only one win separating them. Scorchers are 4th on the ladder but with each week show a level of determination not often seen and are a wonderful credit to their coach. The leader board is extremely tight for the U17 with 3 teams, Voodoos, All Stars and Malanda Jaguars holding a share of 1st place. This week the Totally Tilted U17 girls took on the All Stars with a great match being played. The Totally Tilted girls being coached by Paul Hubner have come ahead in leaps and bounds since the beginning of the season. With Lanie scoring a convincing goal for the Scorchers the team held the All Stars to 2/1. Lilly Curcio and S Cahe scored for the All Stars. The Malanda Jaguars put up a valiant fight against a very strong Voodoos. Unable to put away a couple of chances in the goal box the girls went down to Voo-
doos. Sophie Gampe and Rachel Parisie were dominant in the box for the Voodoos backed up by Alice Philips Nadia Tudini, Ashlee McDonald and Macey Pezellato all scoring . The U17 Bombers took on the U13 rep team; the Bombers were dominant with Paul Nasser scoring a hat tricks of goals. Special mention to the U13 Boys who showed great spirit and determination in this hard fought game. In the Ladies Comp Cruisers took on Pluckers. Rylee Venables and Jess Richardson both scored for Pluckers but with some great defence the Cruisers held out the Pluckers in the final 10 minutes. Final score 2/0 to Pluckers. Shooters took on Belair in a great game with Angela Pollen and Erin Muller each scoring for Shooters. However these two goals couldn’t compete against Belair with Katrina Lange and Helen Harris putting 2 in the box each and Taylor Sommerville getting one in the box: Final score 5/2 to Belair. In the Veterans Plastered Vets and Waterloo went head to head in tight match with Helen Harris Janea Harrison and Louisa Greatex scoring for Waterloo whilst Ann Roberts and Sharlene Burkit put away a goal each for Plastered Vets: final score 3/2 to Waterloo. The men again played some great rounds: The U18 Bombers took on the K9’s and held them to three goals only. Sam Parsons scored twice for the 9’s, with Paul Nasser backing up with a single goal. In the final game of the day Shamrocks took on White Knights. Again an extremely tight match with neither team really dominant. With the skill of Matt Fealy the White Knights defeated Shamrocks 1 nil. K.O. JOE
By Boyd Robertson
A promising young Cooktown fighter has returned from the International Federation of Muay-Thai Amateur (IFMA) World Championships with a gold medal and is already planning his next fight. Joe Pope, 15, travelled to Malaysia in early May for the IFMA titles and won his single fight in the 59-kilogram category by knock-out in the first round. The victory follows up two similar first-round knockouts wins at Australian junior championships on the Gold Coast last year. Joe, a Cooktown lad born and bred
that trains at the Full Boar Thai Boxing gym, is now preparing for fights in Cairns in June and August, in addition to Full Boar’s main show in Cooktown in September. At the end of the year Joe plans to travel to Thailand to live and train further in Muay Thai for some time. Sarah Martin from Full Boar described Joe as a ‘very technical’ fighter and ‘always good to watch.’ “Joe has been training with us since he was about nine,” Martin said. “He’s very neat, he’s very technical and very evasive in his fights. “He’s good to watch, it’s like watching a Muay Thai technician.”

Fashion and fun at races A break in the southern Tableland’s recent rainy weather for the Airfirst Race Day at Atherton Turf Club on May 24 saw a sizeable crowd turn out to see the action both on and off the track. The day’s flagship race, the 1400m Tableland Batteries Magic Millions / FNQ Up and Coming Stayers, was won by jockey Peter Cullen atop Zatsacat. Bucasia Beach carried Braydn Swaffer to second place, with Caravan Sang taking out third. Canhedance was the fastest horse in the 1200m Airfirst Open Handicap. The winner of the 1000-metre Happy Birthday Terry
Ayliffe Benchmark race, titled in honour of the event’s main sponsor, was Glaurung, jockeyed by Nor Yadi. The winner of the 1200-metre You Want Me Contracting Maiden Plate race was Graham Watson atop Outback Supremacy. The 1200-metre Peanut Company of Australia Benchmark race was won by Kirk Stone atop Little Miss Eva. 15-year old Aimee Hinsch from Yungaburra was judged the Best Dressed Teen for Fashions of the Field, while 71-year-old Alison Wilson from Tolga won Best Dressed Mature Lady. Lucy Goodsell took out Best Dressed Lady.

Top school racers in Barron canoe comp By Boyd Robertson The best paddlers from the Tableland’s schools broke records at the BRC12 canoe race between Mareeba and Biboohra on May 10. The 12-kilometre race along the Barron River was held a day before the larger 50-kilometre BRC50 event between Mareeba and Kuranda, drawing competitors from regional and interstate levels. A release of about 1.7 metres of water from Tinaroo Dam coincided with the race, helping paddlers achieve record times across the board. The school’s fastest racer and top junior competitor overall was 16-year-old Mareeba State High School (MSHS) student Matthew Lep, who came in with a time of 59 minutes and 15 seconds. Josh Priestly from St Stephen’s Catholic College was the second-fastest male on one hour, four minutes and 29 seconds. The fastest female student team in the TC2 Canadian challenge was MSHS students Lisa-Maree Toohey and Alexandra Barbir with a time of one hour, 16 minutes and
24 seconds. The second-fastest female team was Jasmine Anderson and Lauren Elmes on one hour, 32 minutes and 47 seconds. The fastest male team was Ethan Miller and Shaun Johnston on one hour, nine minutes and 57 seconds. Jackson Brown and Rhys Harvey were the fastest male double. Race co-ordinator and MSHS teacher Terry McClelland said student performances had been outstanding, particularly that of Matthew Lep. “You don’t get below an hour on the BRC12 unless you train and train hard,” he said. “We were very lucky and thankful for the water release from Tinaroo which helped with the speed but the effort put in by all the contestants was still very impressive – Matthew in particular because he was learning to use a Kevlar canoe. “We are looking at working with the Mareeba Shire Council and other canoe clubs to make next year’s BRC event an iconic paddling event that coincides with races at Mt Isa – the idea is that people can drive up from the coast and do 102 kilometres of paddling over two weekends.”
Mareeba State High School students Ethan Miller, Jasmine Anderson, Alexandra Barbir, Lisa-Maree Toohey, Shaun Johnston, Matthew Lep, Jackson Brown and Rhys Harvey along with teacher Jamie Gardiner (bottom left) all came in with impressive times at the BRC12 canoe race along the Barron River on May 10.
Bulls keep on winning The Mareeba Bulls premier mens side has stamped their authority on the local league and remained the only undefeated team in the 2014 competition coming away with a comprehensive 3-0 win over the previously undefeated Edge Hill Tigers on Sunday May 25. The Bulls wore a pink strip in memory of Indie Rose and a minute silence was held before the kick off. The bulls lead 1-0 at half time with a goal from Elliot Gardner and won the match with a second goal from The Mareeba State School’s boys side won all their games at the annual Bill Turner Cup at Davies Park. St Stephen’s girls side won the female games.
Roosters, Gators lose The Mareeba Gladiators A Grade side has gone down swinging against the Innisfail Leprechauns in an away game on May 24, losing 38-18. The Gladiator’s try scorers for the match were Joe Sio, Dwyane Williams and Jahman Gela, with Jack Hogan successfully converting all three tries. The Gladiators Reserves and Under 18s received an even more serious battering, going down 30-6 and 60-22 respectively. Shane Hinkley was the Reserves’ only try-scorer, with Robert Leecheu convert-
ing his try. The Under 18s’ try scorers were Brendan Volpe, Ian King, Henley Tabuai and Adam McCarthy, with Tyrun Boyle converting three tries. The badly undermanned Atheron Roosters A Grade side lost 74-4. The Roosters Reserves lost 42-28 and the Under 18s tied 28-28. The Roosters have a much-needed bye this weekend, while the Gladiators start Round 2 in an away game agsint Brothers.
Gardner and Robert Pendenza scoring the third. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj was proud of the effort and fight in a tycpical Edge Hill home game. “It was a big fight today, we had to fight, we had to work hard and we came out on top, which is a credit to the boys” Srhoj said. “Our midfield was great today, with Vic out, Benny and Penny really stepped up and Wayne was outstanding today.” The bulls take on Stratford Dolphins at home this weekend.
