Sporting precinct receives support By Justin Fris EXCITING times appear on the horizon for sporting clubs and the Mareeba community, with a proposed sporting precinct receiving support from key local stakeholders. Since 2012, the Bendigo Community Bank (Mareeba and Dimbulah branches) recognised the need for improved sporting facilities, which could result in further benefits for sport on the Tablelands. The centrepiece of the stage one proposal, is the creation of new outdoor ball courts with lighting. Cricket and cycle/foot path
amenities will also compliment stage one of the proposed site. Their vision for a sporting precinct was shared by various sporting clubs throughout Mareeba, which in turn formed the newly renamed ‘Community Bank Recreational Precinct Reference Group’ (CBRPRG). Members of the reference group have raised $400,000 for the stage one precinct proposal, with contributions from the Bendigo Community Bank, Mareeba Netball Association, Mareeba Leagues Club, Mareeba Basketball Club, Mareeba Cricket Club and Mareeba Junior Rugby League Club. It is hoped that a Department of National Parks, Recreation,
Sports and Racing ‘Get Playing Plus’ grant application of $400,000 is successful, which would completely cover stage one of the precinct. CBRPRG Chair Gilbert Teitzel, said that the precinct will ultimately be a high class facility that will benefit the entire region, not just Mareeba. At a community forum held in March this year, the precinct was voted as a priority, ranked third after roads and water, in the ‘improving community recreational activities’ category. Members of the group will have one eye on December 10, 2014, when they will be notified if the grant has received the green light. CONTINUED ON PAGE 3

Discovering local talent By Justin Fris EAGER Kuranda job seekers provided a unique opportunity for untapped talent to rise to the ceiling last Friday night at the Kuranda Amphitheatre. Coordinated by Jobfind and the ‘K-Town’ project, a unique singer song writer night was complimented by a Neil Murrayinspired music workshop. Murray, who won Song of the Year at the 1995 APRA awards, headlined this truly special evening, which fundamentally exhibited the exceptional indigenous musical talent in the Kuranda region. Prior to the main show, Murray sat down with members of the ‘K-Town’ project group and shared his experiences of the music industry, along with added tips to improve their own routines. Local dignitaries (headlined by Mareeba Shire Council Mayor, Tom Gilmore) looked on approvingly as countless artists showcased the full wealth of their ability. This music was different. No auto tune or additives to enhance quality; this was people’s souls expressing cultural stories of which they hold dear to their hearts each day. One of the most promising artists on the night was Zara Betts-Colefax. A recent recipient of an RADF grant from the Tablelands Regional Council, Ms Betts-Colefax performed on stage in style with her younger brother, Ethan. Other performers of note on Friday night included Willy Brim and Bertie Reilly, along with infamous local bands Zennith and Gudju Gudju.

Chase Burns and Mrs Grigg with their Ipads.
READING was the focus for young students at Mareeba State School last Thursday, with an extra special treat for those who attended. In conjunction with the ‘Reading Cafe’ program operated by school library staff, children were encouraged to bring along their grandparents to help share this wonderful opportunity with them. As soon as those library doors flung open at 8.30am, the room filled up quicker than a pool on a 40 degree day. Mareeba SS offers various incentives for children involved with reading cafe, which include a well deserved cup of Milo after each session. Along with this, children are given a book card, where stamps are accrued for every book read. After the tenth book is completed, they receive a special cupcake to go along with their Milo. Mareeba SS Head of Curriculum Valerie
Dayes was upbeat with the attendance and spoke about the importance being given an opportunity to read with an adult. With increased working hours faced by many of us in 2014, these opportunities are becoming few and far between for many children on the Tablelands. For many of us, reading is not a necessity but truly a gift. This gift should be nurtured and embraced and clearly schools in Mareeba are taking this responsibility very seriously. But no time at school is ever the same without celebrating unbridled joy. Youngster Chase Burns’ week started in unforgettable fashion, after he won himself a nifty Ipad through an education based competition. He also got himself into the good books with his teacher Mrs Grigg, as the competition he entered ensured a teacher of his choice would receive an Ipad as well. Mrs Grigg joked upon departure she may need Chase to help her get used to operating it however.

Sporting precinct receives support from key local stakeholders CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said the MSC would agree to assist with funding for the first stage of the precinct, sighting the wealth of benefits for the community. “We see it as a long-term investment in the health and wellbeing of the community and in terms of fitness and outdoor activity, which many people these days are denied,” he said. There are several imperative components for implementing a new sporting venue in a rural community. All clubs that operate within the facility need exceptional communication skills with each other, along with having appropriate risk management policies set in stone. Security of the venue should also be a high priority for both participants and stakeholders. A venue that is clean and safe can flourish and become a hotbed for social interaction. The Express will keep readers updated as new developments come to hand. Let The Express know your thoughts on the proposed precinct. Email us at editorial@ theexpressnewspaper.com.au

Nullinga Dam crucial for quality of future water supply Carl Portella
Advance Cairns welcomes Federal Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce's green paper on future water infrastructure; and the inclusion of the Nullinga Dam project as critical infrastructure for our region's future water security. The blueprint for the future of the nation’s agricultural sector identifies 27 water projects for potential Commonwealth investment; and details the biggest dam building and water infrastructure agenda for decades. The paper calls for a commitment from the Newman Government to fund a feasibility study into the development of Phase 2 of the Mareeba Dimbulah Irrigation Scheme – Nullinga Damto establish its viability as the best solution for boosting the region’s water sustainable supply. President of MDFVGA Joe Moro said:“The Nullinga Dam has been on the agenda since 1949 even before Tinaroo Dam was built, “ he said. “The building of the Dam would be a huge economic project for the area and generate a large number of jobs.” Farmers in the MDIA have not pushed for the building of Nullinga Dam, with the main concern being that water generated from this Dam (Nullinga) would be too expensive; and the cost to farmers would be a staggering $6,000 to $10,000 per ML to purchase depending on the yield. Cattle skulls stolen from Millstream By Justin Fris FIVE large cattle skulls have been stolen from Glen Gorden Station in Millstream. Mareeba Stock and Rural Crime Squad Detectives and the Ravenshoe Police are currently investigating the case, but are calling for members of the local community to keep their eyes out for the sentimental items. Believed to have been taken between August 9 and September 4, the skulls (likenesses pictured left) are from old stud bulls and cows bred at the property. Authorities believe the sheer size of the skulls on public display could jog someone’s memory to their whereabouts. If anybody can shed further information on the case, or reveal the exact whereabouts of the skulls, please contact the Mareeba SARCIS on 4030 3321. The stock squad are hoping the community will recognise skulls similar to these pictured.

ST THOMAS’S school chess team shone during their recent trip to the state interschool chess championships in Brisbane. With Brisbane State High School as the backdrop for the tournament, Michael Harnishfeger’s team finished third overall in the regional/rural division. Overall tightness in the division was quite staggering, with only one solitary game separating the boys from overall regional champion. The pick of the bunch were Caleb Shorey (Board 1) and Nicholas Forgale (Board 4), who both won five out of six matches. By Justin Fris MAREEBA Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore is bringing out his inner Santa Claus; and he is hoping that you will follow him. For many, Christmas is one of the most enjoyable times of the year. It brings family together from far and wide and the true essence of the season can fully be realised. Naturally, it wouldn’t be human existence without a dose of reality. With that point in question, it is inevitable that many people on hard times find the festive period even harder. No one, let alone a child, deserves to feel heart-stricken during one of the happiest times of the year. Mayor Gilmore stressed the importance of the local community assisting with those in need, ahead of the 2014 Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. “We want everyone in our community to be able to celebrate Christmas without feeling stressed about not being able to afford even the basic foodstuffs,” he said. Donations toward the appeal are generated into vouchers, which can be used for essentials during the holidays. The appeal will have several places where people are able to donate, which include council service centres in both Kuranda and Mareeba. If you have fallen on hard times and feel this support could help get you back on your feet, there are certain criteria that need to be met. For those keen to apply for the appeal, please contact your government welfare agency. To donate call MSC on 1300 308 460.

NEWS from your COUNCIL STOCK up now for STORM / WET SEASON
Mayor Tom Gilmore is urging residents to get behind the appeal, saying there are many people in the shire who need help to make the festive season a joyous time. “We want everyone in our community to be able to celebrate Christmas without feeling stressed about not being able to afford even the basic foodstuffs,” he said. The vouchers are delivered to families referred by various charity groups and welfare agencies in the shire. “In the true spirit of Christmas, Mareeba Shire Council would like to help make the festive season easier for those in need through the appeal. “I urge everyone to support the appeal by sending in a donation,” Cr Gilmore said. Donations can be made at Council’s service centres in Mareeba, and Kuranda. People can also send their donation by cheque to Mayor’s Christmas Appeal, PO Box 154, Mareeba 4880. Make the cheque payable to Mayor’s Christmas Appeal. No food items or toys can be accepted for the appeal.
Council Christmas shutdown Council has endorsed the 2014/15 Christmas/New Year closure from midday on Wednesday 24 December 2014 through to Friday 2 January 2015 inclusive. “The Council after hours service call centre, will operate througout the period,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “As in previous years, appropriate arrangements will be put in place to have a skeleton staff available to work through the closure period or be on stand-by in the event of any emergencies,” Cr Gilmore said.

People living in rural or remote areas are being strongly urged to stock up on food, fuel and other essential items now in readiness for the oncoming wet/storm season. “When it comes to extreme weather events in Queensland, it’s not so much a matter of ‘if’ but ‘when’. The more prepared we all are, the faster we’ll bounce back afterwards. Resilience is more than being prepared; it’s changing our thinking to accept that extreme weather is a part of our lives,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. Residents living in urban and rural areas should have at least one week’s supplies, while people living in more remote areas should have at least one month’s supplies or more if possible. People should consider their needs in terms of water, fuel, non perishable food, medications and pet food. Local Mareba Disaster Management Group Chairman and Mareeba Mayor Tom Gilmore said it was imperative people took action now before the wet season rain hit. “The message is to be as prepared as you possibly can be - everyone should have enough supplies to get them through for a short period
of time at minimum, and for a week if they live in remote areas,” he said. “Disasters can and do happen during the wet season. Should the worse case scenario occur, authorities will be busy tending to those who are in the most desperate of situations, so we ask all residents to ensure they have adequate supplies to sustain them,” Cr Gilmore said. “This is the perfect time to check your emergency kit and refresh any items that need to be replaced; check your alternative cooking facilities to ensure they are in good working order; and make sure you have adequate fuel for generators if they’re needed.”
Bringing Council to the Community Council will hold its Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday 19 November 2014 in Irvinebank. “The purpose of holding Council meetings in different locations across the Shire is to provide an opportunity for members of the community to attend and interact with Councillors and senior staff,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “Council has met in Dimbulah and Kuranda so far this year, and early next year we will meet in Chillagoe and Julatten,” Cr Gilmore said. The meeting will be held at 10am at the Irvinebank Hall.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Transitional Environment Program Mareeba Shire Council has adopted the Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant Draft Transitional Environment Program (Draft TEP) to be submitted to the Queensland Department of Environment and Heritage Protection (DEHP). “Council has entered into the voluntary Transitional Environmental Program process as provided for by the Environmental Protection Act for the Mareeba Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP). As part of this process, Council is required to submit for approval a draft Transitional Environmental Program to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection,” Mayor Tom Gilmore said. “Council intends to refurbish the existing Sewerage Treatment Plant to achieve and exceed the conditions of the current Environmental Authority Licence. The refurbishment will also provide opportunities for Council to add process technology to improve effluent quality as future standards tighten,” he said. “This will enable us to minimise the cost on the ratepayer while at the same time ensuring we improve the environmental outcomes.”

Byrnes street seating
On a recent visit to Mareeba, my husband and I (both in our 60’s) noted with interest an article in your paper regarding the lack of seating in the main street (Express Wed. Sept 24). We felt the need to comment and agree totally with Mr Smith’s observation that other towns (as well as city suburbs) do provide adequate public seating and the shortage of such in the very long main street in Mareeba is, indeed, quite noticeable. As a duty of care for the older members of the community who still enjoy being out and about in town we believe that your Council should give careful consideration to this issue by providing additional seating in suitably convenient locations along the street. This would also present a more welcoming image to visitors as well as allowing a rest place for the general public, not just the elderly. Mayor Gilmore, a fair point has been made by Mr Smith in this article and we believe a positive response from Council would be viewed favourably by many people in your town. J. Macdouall
Helping hand needed
I am writing on behalf of Community Council for Australia – which advocates for 600,000 not-for-profits and charities across Australian communities. Without doubt not-for-profits in your community are a critical part of the local economy and I specifically write to thank and congratulate your not-for-profits for their amazing and tireless work. We need to be hearing more about the great work so many of these organisations do around Australia. Many readers may not be aware Australia’s not-for-profit sector has become a huge force to be reckoned with. It deserves more help and support. Our not-for-profit sector now employs 8% of Australia’s entire workforce. It is
The Express reserves the right to edit letters
nearly twice as big as Australia’s agriculture industry. It contributes an incredible $54.8 billion to the nation’s GDP. 36% of our adult population – 5.6 million people volunteer in the sector. We need more “new money” in the sector. We need more people giving the sector a helping hand. Not-for-profit groups also need to recognise that they do have real economic power. It is now estimated the charity sector now has over $175 billion in assets. One good example of how this economic power can be used is Community 21, a group of 20 charities that recognised they all used banks, all had some assets and wanted their assets used to support communities rather than just making money for business. Through Community Sector Banking they now not only do their banking through their own banking service, but use their assets to support other not-for-profits. Some of the not-for-profits that are a driving force behind Community 21 include Oxfam, Jobs Australia, Scope, ACOSS and Ozchild. As Community Sector Banking has shown, working together we can create new opportunities for our sector. Not-for-profits ought to have a bigger say in their future. They build communities and make local economies stronger. They are not driven by “the bottom line”. They are driven by passion and purpose. We salute that and thank your not-for-profits for their powerful work. David Crosbie, Chief Executive Officer, Community Council for Australia.
Irony in LNP’s claim
There is a cruel irony in LNP’s promise to use $3.4 billion in proceeds from asset sales to subsidise electricity bills because those bills are already inflated after the failure of the Newman Government to keep its election promises. I know all households are seeking relief from cost of living pressures, but unfortu-
nately the LNP’s offer is an attempt to corral voters into supporting asset sales that will see the loss of $2 billion in returns to taxpayers every year and forever. Their latest tricky announcement just diverts attention from the fact the average family’s annual power bill has risen a staggering $440 under the Newman Government even though before the 2012 election the Premier said he had a plan to cut bills by $120 each year. Now, after the Premier failed to keep their pre-election promise, they now try to bribe Queenslanders into supporting the biggest asset sale in the state’s history. The LNP’s litany of broken election promises prove they will say anything to gain power, but their incompetence is there for all to see. They said they had a plan for economic growth, a plan for 4% unemployment, and a plan to lower power bills - none of which relied on asset sales. None of those plans has ever seen the light of day and Queenslanders are still waiting. If the LNP’s asset sales program goes ahead $2 billion in annual returns to taxpayers will be lost forever, and over 30 years means taxpayers will lose $60 billion — a figure that dwarfs the one-off $3.4 billion subsidy fund. Private buyers who end up running our electricity system will put up prices and shed jobs to maximise profits. A recent independent Ernst and Young report shows one-third of Australian households have missed an electricity bill payment in the past year and one-in-10 families have not been able to afford to pay three or more bills. Premier, how about delivering on your last election promise before making new ones. Queenslanders simply can’t afford any more of the LNP’s broken promises; shonky ‘plans’ that never materialise or simply don’t work; and its general arrogance, mismanagement, and incompetence. Curtis Pitt MP, Shadow Treasurer

Atherton SHS students Redmand and Gabi Starks in front of one proposed section for the safety lights.
Bright times ahead for Atherton SHS A POTENTIAL introduction of new safety lights along a busy stretch of road is only one of many exciting events on the horizon for Atherton Senior High School. Principal Tony Whybird said there are several unique hurdles that implicate the flow of traffic outside the school on any given day. “Our school is located along the Gilles Highway, which is a busy stretch of road as it is,” he said. “We also have the primary school just down the road, which leads to competing traffic in peak periods of the school day.” Mr Whybird praised PNC President Bob Ramsey, who organised a petition on behalf of the school to intensify their bid for the safety lights. “Safety is very important to us,” he said. As the school year gradually winds down to a walk, senior students will be reflecting across a wide range of events. The first of which, begins tomorrow night at 7.15pm. Atherton SHS’s school presentation night will encapsulate achievements, from academics to sport; and will be situated in the school hall. Camera batteries will be at a premium on Thursday November 20th, with the school formal set to provide dry eyes and picturesque outfits. Students will enter through the road with bisects the school and then slowly acknowledge loved ones as they make their way down the red carpet. A day later, seniors will officially graduate from their high schooling chapter of life. Kicking off at noon, the final few motions of their schooling lives will fittingly be witnessed by those who have spent so much time alongside them. If you would like to find out more about any of the following events, please contact Atherton SHS on 4030 5222.

Achievement to shine in January By Justin Fris
Australia Day events are always operated by hard working volunteers.
THE application window for 2015 Australia Day tenders is wide open, ahead of the upcoming summer months. Australia Day is one of the most popular days on the calendar for some Australians, who like to attend events and bask in the warm glow of sunshine. However, in order to have an officially licensed event, you only have until Friday December 10th to get your event submission in to the Mareeba Shire Council. As an added incentive, some submissions are entitled to receive a financial injection in the vicinity of $250 from the MSC, if they file before the deadline. Along with this, local achievement is also set to ring around Mareeba on the
day, with several integral members of our community set to be acknowledged in a wide variety of fields. Out and about each day, we all see people who go beyond the call of duty, often for little or no return. These people don’t do these things for recognition, but no doubt it would brighten their day if they were considered for such distinction amongst their fellow citizens. Individuals of this calibre are the fundamental heartbeat of our townships and make things happen when they are needed the most. If you would like to nominate for either an Australia Day event or a special individual for an Australia Day award, contact Stacey Maisel via email at staceym@msc.qld.gov.au.
Your opportunity to voice opinion at freight forum By Justin Fris ALL members of FNQ should have a vested interest in the upcoming freight forum on Friday, October 31, at the Mareeba RSL. Starting at 1pm, key speakers will liaise with Tablelands locals in regard to unlocking the economic values that are laden within our fine region. Member for Cook David Kempton will be hosting the event, but there will also be other heavy hitters from a variety of organisations keen to step out of their seats and have their say. Various federal and state members of parliament will be in attendance, but the jewel in the crown will be Dr Andrew Higgins from the CSIRO, who will feature prominently as the guest speaker. In the Far North, we face a raft of different issues (climate etc) that people down in the south just don’t understand. With key stakeholders in attendance, this is your opportunity to voice your opinion directly to them and stand up proudly for your town. Discussion of improving cost effectiveness and maximisation of productivity will be at the forefront. Mr Kempton said he would welcome spirited interaction from local members on Friday. “This is the significant time for industry businesses to approach decision leaders by coming together to address freighting issues for continuity,” he said. “Future regional growth and distribution cost mitigation is long overdue in the North.”

equate storage options. The Colorado retains its 4x4 credentials. The carry-over twospeed (low and high range) transfer case helps provide traction on steep hill climbs, while a hill descent control system ensures speed is controlled on the way back down. Pricing of the Colorado range remains one of the main reasons it is one of the top selling vehicles on the market. Dealer Principal of Redding’s Mareeba, Mark Redding has a tremendous price incentive on the Colorado LX 4x4 crew cab which is priced at $38,990 drive away for the manual and a free upgrade to automatic for the same price. Ladies night in for a great cause
Mareeba RSL’s Amy Johnston, Timmy Turner and Tracey O’Shea are looking forward to the ladies night in, this Friday.
Local cane farmers have a lot to gain through this exciting new program. (Photo Supplied by Terrain NRM)
Govt bid to help farmers WET tropics sugar cane farmers will be given greater opportunity to voice input over the future quality of water entering the Great Barrier Reef. Under a new initiative from the Abbott government and Terrain NRM, the newly famed ‘Reef Trust Tende’ will inject $5 million into assisting local cane farmers control their overall use of nitrogen and minimise excess discharge from their operations. Applications for the tenders are currently open, with the final submission deadline being the 18th December. This move can only do wonders for ensuring longterm improvement of water quality in the region. The tender, which is based over four years, allows farmers to apply in a market-based setting. Successful submissions by local cane farmers will
need to exhibit a good value for money, along with magnanimous intent for minimising excess nitrogen discharge. Terrain NRM CEO Carol Sweatman said there would be a series of workshops prior to the 18th, where locals can immerse themselves in everything related to the programs and improving their performance. ““Terrain NRM will be holding five workshops throughout the region from 1 to 5 December 2014,” she said. “ I strongly encourage cane farmers to attend to find out about the programme and learn how to calculate nitrogen use efficiency for their property.” If you would like to register for one of the workshops or apply for a tender, contact Terrain NRM on 1800 357 755.

the Mareeba RSL is hosting the Tablelands largest ‘ladies night in’ event in support of the one in six Queensland women diagnosed with breast or gynaelogical cancer in their lifetime. The night is all about raising vital funds for the cancer research and having some fun. Mareeba RSL Function Manager Tracey O’Shea said, “The night will have something for everyone, with heaps fun for all,” she said. “It’s a great excuse to get your friends together for a ladies-only night out in Mareeba. “As a club, we decided to host the event as cancer affects all of us in some way – whether it’s through a friend, work colleague or family member.” The day kicks off at 10.30am with a ladies movie (screening ‘Tammy’) and high tea event and then at 6pm the fun starts. There is a ladies-only trade show which will feature local businesses with products on display, fashion parades, a skit from the Sisterhood relay for life team, pampering stations by local experts, lucky door prizes, plus a shades of pink

Biosecurity Queensland is aware of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV) cases in the Northern Territory, and is asking growers to check their melon crops and report any signs of the virus. Acting Queensland Chief Plant Protection Officer Sarah Corcoran said Biosecurity Queensland is working with the Northern Territory Government to undertake tracing measures for Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus. “It’s important to control and minimise the
spread of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus because if it was to cross over the border, it could substantially impact the Queensland nursery, vegetable, and melon industries,” Ms Corcoran said. “Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus can result in the malformation, internal rotting, or discoloration of fruit, resulting in unsaleable produce. “Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus is distinctive from other disease such as Papaya ringspot virus (PRSV-W) or Watermelon mosaic virus (WMV) because it causes internal discolouration and rotting of the flesh. “Queensland is a major producer of watermelons, rockmelons and cantaloupe, with the state’s melon industry worth approximately $77 million dollars.” Ms Corcoran said biosecurity is everyone’s responsibility and growers play a key role in
keeping Queensland’s melon industry safe. “Although there is no evidence to suggest Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus is present in Queensland, it’s important growers remain vigilant by checking their crops and practicing good on-farm hygiene. “This virus is easily transmitted through plant material, mechanical means, seed, pollen, and water. It’s important growers exercise caution when accepting or moving melon related products.” For more information about movement restrictions, on-farm hygiene, or Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus visit www.biosecurity.qld.gov.au or call 13 25 23. To report a suspected case of Cucumber green mottle mosaic virus, immediately call the Exotic Plant Pest Hotline on 1800 084 881 or contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23.
Mango restrictions in place for Cape York By Justin Fris
MAREEBA LIVEWEIGHT CATTLE
CURRENT restrictions are enforced in the Cape York region, in regard to mango transportation. In order to ensure the safety of the trade during the upcoming festive period, there are simple guidelines that need to be met by all within the catchment area. Biosecurity Queensland Acting Chief Plant Protection Officer Sarah Corcoran said if both locals and tourists followed some simple steps, the potential threat of infectious diseases and pests could be minimised.

“Infestations of red banded mango caterpillar and leaf gall midge occur at several locations north of the Jardine River, on the northern tip of Cape York Peninsula and we don't want these pests to spread further,” she said. Ms Corcoran said those who flirted with illegal activity could face fines if they were caught breaching the enforcement. “If you grow mangoes, always keep watch for anything unusual. During the fruiting period, regularly check your fruit for signs of unusual pests and diseases,” she said.

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS: It's time for scary movies and comedy flicks, at The Rising Sun Cinema, in Mareeba, this week New on the Mareeba big screen is ANNABELLE, which will have you on the edge of your seat. Plus TAMMY, with an all star cast that includes Melissa McCarthy of Bridesmaid, The Heat and Identity Thief fame, Susan Sarandon, Dan Aykroyd
and Kathy Bates. It's the story of a road trip that goes all awry. Also continuing this week this week is one of the biggest movies of recent weeks GONE GIRL, starring Rosemund Pike and Ben Affleck. A sensational film that will appeal to anyone who appreciates top drama.

NOW SHOWING GONE GIRL Wed 29th 11.00am, 8.00pm Thur 30th 5.15pm Sat 1st Nov 11.00am Sun 2nd 3.00pm (MA) Wed 5th 11.00am
TAMMY Tammy (Melissa McCarthy), recently fired from a Toppy Jacks fast food restaurant, returns home to find her husband enjoying a romantic meal with their neighbour (Toni Collette). Mum (Allison Janney) won't let her use her car, but Grandma Pearl (Susan Sarandon), who is keen to take a road trip to Niagara Falls, flashes some cash and they are off. Both are big trouble.
ANNABELLE
GONE GIRL
When his wife Amy (Rosamund Pike) disappears the story becomes the focus of an intense media circus. Nick Dunne (Ben Affleck) sees the spotlight turned on him when it's suspected that he may not be innocent.
John Form (Ward Horton) has found the perfect gift for his expectant wife, Mia (Annabelle Wallis) - a beautiful, rare vintage doll in a pure white wedding dress. But Mia's delight with Annabelle doesn't last long. On one horrific night, their home is invaded by members of a satanic cult, who attack the couple. Spilled blood and terror are not all they leave behind. The cultists have conjured an entity so malevolent that nothing they did will compare to the sinister conduit to the damned that is now... Annabelle.

Aquarius
Jan 21 to Feb 19

1 cup melted marshmallow 1 teaspoon vanilla 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips 3 tablespoons red food coloring
1. Spray a 9-inch square pan lightly with cooking spray, then line it with a double thickness of foil with ends of foil extending over sides. Spray lightly again and wipe out any excess spray with a paper towel. 2. Place butter in a large microwave-safe bowl. Cover with a paper towel to prevent spattering. Cook on high for 1½ minutes or until butter is melted. 3. Add sugar, milk and cream; mix well. Microwave on high power for 3 minutes, stir and cook another 2 minutes. Stir well. If butter seems to separate out of the mixture, don’t worry, just keep stirring till it mixes back in. Scrape down sides of bowl and return to microwave. Microwave 3 more minutes, stir again, then finish with another 2½ minutes in the microwave. 4. Remove from microwave, add marshmallow and stir. Add white chocolate chips and vanilla. Stir until very smooth all ingredients are well incorporated. 5. Place semi-sweet chocolate chips and food coloring in a second microwave-safe bowl. Immediately, transfer about ½ of the hot white chocolate mixture to this second bowl. Stir well with a strong handled spatula or wooden spoon until chocolate chips are completely melted and incorporated. 6. Working quickly, with two clean medium-size ice cream scoops or 2 tablespoons, plop scoops of each mixture in a random pattern into a prepared pan. 7. When complete, lift up pan and drop from about 1-inch above work surface. Repeat several times to remove any air bubbles. Jiggle pan to smooth surface then take a small knife, coated with a bit of butter and run the blade back and forth through the fudge to create the swirly effect. 8. Cool completely. Use foil handles to lift fudge from pan before cutting into squares.
Don’t let someone take the credit for a job you did. Be courteous if you wish to avoid major delays. Try not to be too harsh with loved ones; there will always be two sides to an Issue.

Basketball semi’s approaching The Mareeba summer season basketball competition now moves into the concluding rounds of fixtures. With semi-finals fast approaching, the last three rounds are certain to produce a number of keenly contested encounters. At least nine senior and junior sides still require victories, just to qualify for the semi-finals. A distinct advantage is gained by any team who can clinch top position in their respective division going into the Semi’s. Presently only Phoenix under 16’s Juniors are assured of top placing, while Wolves have a handy eight competition points advantage over nearest rivals Hawks and Tigers in the under 14’s fixtures. In Mareeba fixtures played last week, Juniors completely stole the limelight with many exciting clashes. Scorpians and Timberwolves Under 16’s Juniors played a 36 All Draw in which Brendon Volp (Scorpians) and Jacob Bishop (Timberwolves) contributed 17 points each for their side.
Another Under 16’s encounter between the undefeated Phoenix combination and Cobras provided many highlights. No doubt the accurate shooting of Tyson Tatti, who notched up 20 points guiding Phoenix to a 45 to 35 victory. While Dommage maintained their hopes of a Division one semi-final appearance, by their narrow 22 to 18 win over Panthers. Top Under 14’s junior side Wolves registered an entertaining 34 to 22 victory over a very much improved Tigers side. The other Under 14’s fixture resulted in a convincing 19 points win by Lakers, over Eagles and follows their good upset two points win over top team Wolves the previous week. Although Lakers will require further success to qualify for the semi-final after a slow season start. In another close contest young Under 12’s Junior Dragon and Magpies produced a hard earned eigth all draw.
Mareeba’s under 16 boys after their win at the inter-town competition on October 18. Atherton SHS students excel abroad in sport
By Justin Fris
ATHERTON provided a picturesque backdrop as the Crocodile trophy wound its way through rugged terrain; and our hearts. Riders from over 20 nationalities (along with local amateurs) boldly took on three stages that pushed them to the absolute limit. As soon as stage three kicked off at Lake Tinaroo on a balmy Monday morning, the blowtorch was well and truly applied to the proverbial belly. A course spanning 78km provides challenges of its own, but for those unfamiliar with the harsh Far North climate, it was seriously hard going. After mechanical problems swept through the riding group like the plague, former Portuguese Olympian David Rosa was left smiling, after successfully keeping the chasing pack at arm’s length. Rosa was reflective after the race and said it took him a while to get a feel for the conditions. “My legs feel like concrete now,” he said. “I found my rhythm during the second lap and really tried to push it, but I ultimately paid for it on the third lap.” The following day, officials congregated in the heart of Atherton itself, as the race neared the halfway mark. Greg Saw held sway on the leaderboard, but again it was a foreign rider who would ultimately come up trumps. Canadian Cory Wallace became the race’s fourth individual stage winner, which typified the tightness for overall domination. Wallace maintained a four minute buffer over his nearest rival, which ensured a thrilling finish to the Atherton component of the event. Tablelands Regional Councillor Shaaron Linwood highlighted the significance of the Crocodile trophy event during the last TRC meeting, saying it was an event that people of Atherton could really feel proud about.

Holly Tosach has excelled in hockey and Briana Haydon in futsal. By Justin Fris
TWO Atherton SHS students have capped off state selection by gaining further representative honours in recent weeks. The first being talented hockey player Holly Tosach, who after being successfully selected in the Qld U/19’s hockey team (despite only being in year 12), travelled over to New Zealand for a Trans Tasman tour with her teammates. It is worth noting that Tosach was only one of three
girls in the squad who was picked outside of Brisbane. If this news wasn’t encouraging enough, the emergence of futsal star Brianna Haydon is the cherry on top for the Atherton community. Despite Qld finishing third in the national carnival, Haydon’s technical ability saw her selected in the Australian U/18’s female futsal squad. Haydon will travel to San Francisco with her fellow Australians, where they will compete on the national stage. The Express would like to congratulate both Briana and Holly on their achievements during 2014.

AFTER ripping through Norths for 25 in their first innings (only 18 overs), the Mareeba Bandits failed to take full advantage of their dominance away from home. Ending the day’s play on 9/205 off 39 overs, the Bandits lost some composure in a bid to set a sizable chase for the hosts. A total of 19 wickets fell on the day, which had traditionalists hugging their copies of Wisden joyfully. Swing was at premium for the Bandits pace attack in the morning, who blunted the home side with superior economical spells of bowling. Brett Brewer snared 6/6, in a per-
formance which well and truly wound back the clock. He was clinically assisted by Adam Roy, who took 4/18. After returning to the field after the innings break, the Bandits were keen to widen their stroke play and put Norths to the sword. Roy topped scored for the visitors with 60, but was unable to find a partner that could keep up with him. Many of his teammates got starts, but nibbled away at certain deliveries which got themselves out. Bandits ace Brendan Payne said his teammates were disappointed at their innings capitulation, but are confident they can set a competitive chase next Sunday.

Gun barrel straight for Atherton’s finest By Justin Fris THE Atherton Tableland Gun Club welcomed sharpshooters from all corners of Australia, for the ‘Atherton Annual Shot’ competition last weekend. For the hosts, attendance numbers were exceptionally pleasing. Roughly 94 competitors took part in a variety of disciplines on Saturday, with numbers hitting over 100 on the Sunday. These competitors included two interstate devotees, who travelled from Adelaide and Esperance (WA) just for the contest. A quick drive along Rifle Range Road and a solid contingent of tents came into view. Sharper than a seasoned marksman, the level of dedication from the fans was clearly evident. Four events were scheduled from 9am, which covered a multitude of challenges for all involved. The 25 target double barrel ensured weary travellers rubbed the sleep from their eyes, while the 25 target point score provided compelling viewing at lunch time. ATGC President Alan Poggioli was upbeat about the overall standard of the competition, as competitors and enthusiasts stood side by side and took in the wonderful backdrop. After catching up with Shannon Paton (pictured across) and discussing his recent round of form, it was time to take in the setting and view the hard work loyal club volunteers had put in for the event. Townsville Gun Club President Wayne Read was another keen observer on Saturday, who enjoyed seeing competitors from all over the nation come together at the impressive facility. A quick wander through the club house resulted in a raft of smells bouncing off the four walls. The frostiness of freshly cold beers combined with the wafting ashes of fallen clay targets made for a unique sporting environment amidst the rugged backdrop. A massive dinner culminated the midway point of the competition, which was due acknowledgement for noble sportsman who practice their craft in a safe, professional manner.
Proud officials were rapt with the weekend.
‘Fight Night’ talent rises to top at Mareeba PCYC By Justin Fris MAREEBA Amateur Boxing Club was the big winner last Saturday night at the “Mareeba Fight Night” tournament. Those who filled the Mareeba PCYC stood as one to applaud both Drew Cater and Elijah Lawrence, who took out the main Junior (60kg) and Senior title (54kg) bouts respectively. It only took Cater thirty seconds into the first round to get into the groove against Leon Ciofolli; with his ability to land lethal mid-body blows the signature of victory. With Cater stalking Ciofolli like a tiger in long grass, the blows rained down harder and left the judges with no alternative but to award a unanimous verdict. Things were noticeably tighter for Lawrence, who faced a worthy adversary in Colby Mulcahy. Like two angry ants fighting over the remains of a picnic lunch, both fighters battled grimly in a bid to take control of the contest. Mulcahy had the upper hand when Lawrence was in close and was keen to move toward his
opponent, each time he took a mighty blow. Despite this dominance, Mulcahy appeared to tire toward the end of the third round, with Lawrence landing a juicy right uppercut moments before the round ended. Sensing the tide could turn, Lawrence called on his superior fitness in the final round, which ultimately proved the difference in the fight. Despite these matchups being the overall centrepiece of the night, there were several exciting undercard fights which got the crowd up on their feet. Cody Scalia began the night in winning fashion, after defeating Mareeba’s Tyronne Courtney in the 38kg Senior/Junior division. Courtney gave as good as he got, but ultimately struggled to contend with Scalia’s superior footwork and height advantage. After facing early resistance, Thomas Van Dijk recorded victory (53kg Senior) over Mareeba’s Renzi Cater midway in the second round, after Cater retired from the fight due to a jab to the head. Boxing purists in the crowd were also treated
Pre season beckons for Roosters AFTER a disastrous 2014 season, the Atherton Roosters are eager to return to finals action next year. Everyone knows that Grand Finals are not won in September, as the miles in the legs over summer can be the difference between finishing a game full of life in the post-season. If you are keen to join the new coop of
Roosters, please ink Thursday, November 6, in your diary. The first training session will commence at 6pm, but those extra keen are encouraged to get there a bit earlier and ensure a good warm up (dust off those cobwebs). For more information, contact first grade coach Jamie Bain on 041948043.
Football veterans do club proud Mareeba united Football Club’s over 45’s and over 35’s men have done the club proud at the annual ‘Old Mongrel’s Carnival’ three day carnival, held in Cairns at the weekend. Both teams made it all the way to the semi-finals on Sunday, but unfortunately

were knocked out after full time. The over 45's went down 1-0, with the over 35's going down in a penalty shootout to the J-league boys, after finishing 1-1 at full time. A huge congratulations to the all players involved.
to a senior exhibition midway through the card, with Damon Eales (Mareeba A.B.C) sparring against Daniel Perrin. Someone clearly forgot to tell them it was an exhibition, as the punches thrown were harder than a triple scotch. Mareeba’s Joseph Baupau also announced himself as the new kid on the block, despite narrowly being defeated in the 54kg Junior bout against Kieran Raymond. Kyle Eyers completed a memorable night for the locals, coming up tops in his 35kg Senior/ Junior bout against one of his closest friends, Tristan Cater. Current five time world heavyweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jnr (with a record of 470) mightn’t have been in the house on Saturday night, but if the talent is anything to go by, Australia might one day produce a regional fighter that could match such an impeccable record. It’s a long way from Mareeba to Madison Square Garden in New York City, but we were treated to a spectacle equal of one experienced in the U.S.
Elijah Taylor provided a scintillating final round to win his Senior bout.
