usiness leaders are confident the local economy will surge in the lead-in to Christmas and continue deep into 2014 as the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce hosted its Business Awards on Saturday. Under clear skies at the Mareeba Turf Club, there was a renewed sense of optimism among the 220-strong crowd that the economic uncertainty of recent years is at an end. The gala evening was held to recognise Mareeba’s outstanding businesses as well as the role those businesses play in contributing to the wider community. Throughout the evening awards were presented in the categories: community group of the year, communitarian, rural/agricultural, new business of the year and business of the year. A customer service award, decided by popular vote, was also presented on the night. Prior, award nominees underwent an interview with an independent panel of judges consisting of a business leader from Mareeba, Atherton and Kuranda. In most major categories, the panel rewarded businesses that had been proactive and taken risks despite the lingering economic gloom.

The Express took out the evening’s major gong as Business of the Year on the back of a major expansion into Atherton. The expansion makes the independent newspaper the only Tableland paper home delivered in both major Tableland towns and represents a 40 per cent increase in distribution at a time most media organisations are cutting back. Managing editor of The Express Carl Portella said the expansion and success of the newspaper would not have been possible if it wasn’t for the support it had received from the local business community. “Since we started the paper back in 2010 we have never had anything but support from this community and, in particular, this business community. It is that support which gave me the confidence to expand our operation,” he said. “These business awards are so important for all the winners and the nominees because it allows us to think about where we have been and what we have achieved in the past two years. “I know for many of us, including ourselves, the feeling is that we as a business community and as a town have come a long way but that we still have a long way to go.” New Business of the Year went to John and Debbie Nucifora for their creation of a frozen

mango ice block – Zingo 100% Pure Mango. The couple began tinkering with the product in December 2011 and after a year working on different prototypes and a $300,000 up-front investment began distribution in late 2012. The Nuciforas said now that they have consolidated the product in Queensland they are ready to roll it out across Australia. “We believed in the product but it was still a hell of a risk and getting it to where we are now was one of the hardest tasks I’ve ever had,” Mr Nucifora said. “The Mareeba community has been overwhelming in their support of us and this product and the fact that they have been so good makes us proud to live, farm and have a business here in this town.” TGT continued its recent resurgence by taking out the rural/agricultural award and teasing that a major announcement for the business was just around the corner. General manager of TGT Sheldon Mulla said the company was in the midst of a major cultural shift from co-operative to corporation. Mr Mulla said the pitfall of being a co-operative was that the business had been guilty of taking custom for granted and that over the past two years that culture had changed. “There has been a lot of change recently and

that has involved a lot of blood, sweat and tears which is why I received this award tonight on behalf of the staff,” Mr Mulla said. “We changed a long standing culture almost overnight because we realised that, that is what we needed to do if we wanted to continue to be a player in this town for another seven decades. “The [outlook] for business still isn’t all that good with all the uncertainty of recent elections but it looks like we are about to get some clear air [in 2014] so we can all get on with business.” Other major winners from the evening included: Mareeba Turf Club as community group of the year, John and Delsi Delai won the Communitarian Award while Joey Trotta from That’s My Physio romped home in popular voting to take out the Customer Service category. Mareeba Chamber of Commerce president Pietro Girgenti said there was an undercurrent of optimism in the business community leading into Christmas and 2014. “The business community is looking forward to putting the uncertainty caused by the Federal and [upcoming] local election behind them so we can get back to business,” he said. “I think it is important that every so often we take stock of these amazing things that are happening in our business community and celebrate what we have achieved.”

100 years young for Michelina By Ryan Groube ON her 100th birthday, Michelina Falvo received the perfect gift – the thing she cherishes above all else, her family. About 100 people, the majority members of the Falvo family, flocked to the Mareeba International Club on October 26 to celebrate their beloved matriarch’s milestone birthday. One by one family members, some from as far away as Sydney, were given the opportunity to speak about their memories of Mrs Falvo. Their stories told of a funny, loving and caring – if often direct woman – who found the most joy at hosting family at Easter, Christmas and New Years lunches on the crammed balcony at 29 Rankin Street. The most common theme from the speeches was Mrs Falvo’s desire to see her family grow. Many of the male speakers recalled being grilled with a very specific series of questions: ‘Have you got a girlfriend? When are you getting married? When are you having a child? When are you having another?’ Daughter Joan Brunetto said her mother had been

so excited about turning 100 and that being surrounded by family Michelina Falvo cuts the cake during her 100th birthday celebration at the had made her day Mareeba International Club even more special. in Australia. The family settled at their sponsor’s farm “Family is eveat Lake Barrine before saving up enough money to purrything to Mum,” she said. Mrs Brunetto said her Mum believed the secret to chase a property near Lake Eacham where they ran cattle. In 1962, the family bought a property at Biboohra longevity was to keep on working hard and to rememwhere they farmed tobacco before moving into their ber that you don’t need to be rich to be happy. Born in 1913 in the small Italian town of Gizzeria Rankin Street home in 1968, where Mrs Falvo still in the Calabria region of Italy, Michelina Guazza was lives today despite the passing of her husband in 1992. The party for Mrs Falvo kicked off at about 11am one of seven children. On January 15, 1935, she married Antonio Falvo with the formal proceedings concluding with a cake and they began a family which had ballooned to five cutting at 3pm. A Sydney member of the Falvo family perhaps before Antonio departed for Australia in 1952. In March 1954, Mrs Falvo arrived in Australia, summed up Michelina best: “She just cares about us all children in tow, after a 35-day voyage. After making so much and wants everyone to be happy. That is what their way to Brisbane it took a further 17 days to get to makes her the Mother of Mothers.” Member for Cook David Kempton and Member for Cairns on the train after being delayed at the Burdekin Kennedy Bob Katter both congratulated Mrs Falvo on during a brutal wet season. The couple’s sixth child Joe was added to the brood reaching the milestone.

Big achievement for group of Grade 12 students By Ryan Groube AS their secondary education comes to an end, a group of students have left an indelible mark at Mareeba State High School (MSHS). On October 25, 13 Grade 12 students finished the construction of a concrete viewing platform which looks out over the school oval, including wheelchair access. MSHS paid for the raw materials, TAFE provided a teacher to oversee the project and Construction Skills Queensland provided the students with all the gear they need to work at a building site, including ear muffs, measuring tape and steel capped boots. Building the platform was the key component of a four-week Doorways to Civil Construction program with graduates earning a Certificate II in Resources and Infrastructure Work Preparation. Graduates also obtained a White Card, a mandatory requirement to work on a

Troy Bloustien, a member of TAFE’s civil construction team, oversaw the students work on the platform and said the skills they had learned would be invaluable. “The project is about getting kids out and doing something practical which not only gives them a good introduction to working in construction but also gives them a chance to do something for the school,” he said. “Even if it [construction] is not what they decide to do what they have learned is valuable life skills that can be applied just around the home.” Dale Richardson and Cody Brennan graduated on October 25 and are both looking to pursue apprenticeships, Dale as a cabinet marker and Cody as a diesel fitter, next year. The pair agreed that the skills that they had learned throughout the course would not go to waste.

Ceasefire over DCS overhaul

‘Thank you for saving my son’s life’

THE State Government and rural firies have called a temporary ceasefire over a proposed overhaul of the Department of Community Safety. As large swathes of the Blue Mountains in New South Wales burned, rural firies called off proposed protests at Premier Campbell Newman’s Ashgrove electorate office. In turn, the State Government announced a boost in funding for the Rural Fire Service to cover the cost of essential fire fighting equipment and training. The stand-off comes following the release of two major reports, the Malone Review and the Keelty Review, which are looking into the structure of the RFBQ and DCS, respectively. The Malone review was widely welcomed by rural firies, including those on the Tableland. The Rural Fire Service had drafted a 21-page report, obtained by The Express into its concerns about the recommendations contained within the Keelty Review.

Glen Condon, from Gympie, is recovering in a Brisbane hospital after being extracted from a truck crash at Walkamin by heroic emergency service personnel. “He’s asking to see his boys – he lives for his boys.” Ms Condon lives in Gympie but has been taking the train to Brisbane every second day to visit her son, who has been moved from the Royal Brisbane Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to the burns ward. Despite her son facing the prospect of a long and torturous recovery, Ms Condon said that she would be indebted to the emergency responders on the Tableland for the rest of her life. “I’d just like to thank everybody that helped with his retrieval and what they have done for him,” she said. “They saved his life – there’s no two ways about it. By Boyd Robertson A truck driver pulled from the wreckage of a horrific crash near Walkamin has opened his eyes in a Brisbane hospital and asked to see his sons. Concious and lucid for brief periods, Glen Condon has no memory of the accident that saw his prime mover tumble over the edge of an embankment at the ‘Jump Up’ in the early hours of October 11. Glen’s mother Julia contacted The Express last week hoping to update the public on her son’s condition and to thank those involved in saving her son’s life. “When he does speak he is very groggy from the painkillers,” Ms Condon said.

they get the appreciation they deserve.” Atherton fire station captain Jimmy Isabella, who co-ordinated the three-hour rescue operation that freed Mr Condon from the crash, said it was all in a day’s work for him and his men. “It’s our job that we join up to do,” he said. “We use our training and our equipment and we do the best that we can. “You would think that nobody could survive this kind of thing but he was a fighter, and in the end we had a good outcome.” Police from Cairns, Mareeba and Brisbane are still investigating the cause of the crash. It is believed an onboard mini-fridge may have contributed to propping open the cab and keeping it from collapsing.

Bridge to Recovery opens By Boyd Robertson The opening of a community-built ‘bridge to recovery’ at Mareeba Hospital will help in putting a spring back in patients’ steps. The bridge, which is six metres long and 1.2 metres wide, is located in a courtyard between two of the hospital’s wards and is designed to assist rehabilitation of mobility-impaired patients, who will walk over it daily to improve lower leg strength. It comes under the Older Persons Evaluation Rehabilitation and Assessment (OPERA) unit of the hospital. The Mareeba Friends of the Hospital Foundation and Rotary cooperated to build the bridge. The Friends of the Hospital contributed about $13,000 for materials while Rotary members, including former Mareeba Shire Council mayor Cedric Davies, Tito Sciani, Kim Peckham, Barry Eaton and Brett Camp, handled construction. Tablelands Regional Council deputy mayor Evan McGrath opened the bridge on October 24 in a small ceremony attended by hospital, Rotary and Friends of the Hospital representatives. OPERA unit manager Tanya Barker said the bridge would go a long way toward the recovery of the ward’s patients. “Patients are usually in here for between two and six weeks and we would be expecting them to use this bridge daily to increase functionality,” she said. “The support for this project has been amazing - Cedric Davies was the one who came up with the idea about six months ago and now here it is.” Friends of the Hospital chair Ida Portella said Ms Barker and Mr Sciani deserved credit for the bridge’s creation as well. “The driving people behind this thing have been Cedric, Tanya and Tito,” she said. “I think the bridge is fantastic and I think it’s something that is going be very well-used. “It’s absolutely going to be an effective tool to improve people’s lives.”

One step closer for Chillagoe By Ryan Groube

Members of the Electrical Trades Union protest outside the offices of Member for Cook David Kempton last Thursday. Mr Kempton was in Cairns at the time.

Comments spark protest without a public mandate. “The comments attributed to me by the ETU are completely untrue, there are absolutely no jobs under threat for Ergon workers,” he said. “The government is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of how to provide consumers with power in the most affordable and efficient manner - following on from that no action will be taken to privatise or sell off assets without a mandate from the Queensland people. “I would suggest that ETU representatives should be expending their energy on ways to improve productivity rather than spreading false rumours about job losses.” Mr Haire in turn rubbished Mr Kempton’s denial. “He is a liar - I personally heard these comments being made in Bamaga and there are multiple other witnesses,” he said. “We want Kempton to stand up for his electorate, oppose privatisation, oppose job cuts and oppose the selling of assets in remote communities. “We also want an apology from him to the workers he insulted, the workers that are out there during cyclones risking their lives getting the power back on while he is safe inside.” When questioned over the effectiveness of staging a protest outside Mr Kempton’s office while he was not in his office, Mr Haire said it was irrelevant where the Member was. “We organise these events around the availability of our members, not Kempton’s schedule,” he said. “We wanted to make a public statement about job losses and to us that’s more important than whether or not he was in his office. “It doesn’t actually surprise us because by all accounts he goes missing all over his electorate all the time - he’s more interested in George Street than his home turf.”

By Boyd Robertson Members of the Electrical Trade Union (ETU) staged a protest outside the office of Member for Cook Dave Kempton in Mareeba on October 24 in response to alleged comments he made at mayors’ meeting in Bamaga. Mr Kempton, who had appointments in Cairns during the protest, is alleged to have described Ergon employees as ‘members of an unproductive union workforce’ at the meeting, which took place at a community centre near Bamaga on October 10. The protests, which consisted of about 40 people, also included members of the Queensland Nurses Union and aimed to draw attention to what the union calls a ‘culture of privatisation’ in the Newman Government, with fears over job cuts similar to those in the public health service rife. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter and former Labor candidate for Leichhardt Billy Gordon also attended the protest. Protest organiser Michael Haire said Mr Kempton’s comments highlighted the government’s attitude toward unions and the state workforce. “He is attacking us with this tirade because we were talking to local mayors in relation to the job cuts for remote depots,” he said. “The maintenance budgets are being cut, jobs have already gone and soon more will go - it’s the same thing that happened in Victoria several years ago, where they cut workers, they cut maintenance, they privatised the providers, soon all the profits were going overseas and they were left with a run-down and dangerous network. “In the end the public have to dip into their pockets to fix things like this.” Mr Kempton hit back at the allegations, calling them “completely false” and saying there would be no job cuts

CHILLAGOE is on the cusp of having a potable water supply with the Tablelands Regional Council making a shortlist for $295,000 in funding through the State Government’s Royalties for the Regions program. The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) applied to the funding due to increased demand for water as a result of nearby mining activities and the existing water supply containing arsenic levels fractionally above recommended levels. Having made the shortlist, the

TRC will have to submit a detailed business case for a water treatment plant to the State Government with the funding expected to be confirmed by the end of the year. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long said finalising the business case for the water treatment plant was underway. “TRC has a consultant already coordinating the business case preparations aimed at securing this funding offer,” she said. Divisional councillor Gaye Taylor said she had received numerous complaints from residents about having a water supply that was non-potable.

“The township relies on groundwater for its town water supply and it has been bought to Council’s attention that arsenic levels in the groundwater are above the Australian Health standards,” she said. “A potable town water supply is every residents right and essential for the future economic growth of the Chillagoe district.” Deputy Premier Jeff Seeney said mining at Mungana, 15 kilometres from Chillagoe, and the establishment of a 250-person accommodation camp had placed increased demand on the town’s water supply bores.

Mareeba Shire Council

ELECTION COVERAGE

Election draws near By Ryan Groube

The Electoral Commission of Queensland (ECQ) has begun a wide-ranging education blitz in the lead up to an unusual and historic election. In little more than a week, on November 9, residents of the Mareeba Shire will head to the polls to elect a new council. Unlike previous elections, voters will not just vote for a Mayor and one councillor but instead they will vote for the entire council. At the close of nominations, two Mayoral candidates, Mick Borzi and Tom Gilmore, had nominated along with six-strong teams. Five independent councillor nominations had also been received. Voters are under no compulsion to vote along team lines and can choose any six councillors on the ticket. The ECQ spokesperson said it was confident people would be fully aware of how and where to vote on November 9 after beginning its legislative advertising. “ECQ will be conducting its legislative advertising in the Courier-Mail as well as other local newspapers circulating within the local government area. Additionally the Commission will be using radio advertisements on Hot 97.9 FM at various times throughout the period,” the spokesperson said. “All electors enrolled as at Close of Roll on Friday 11 October for the local government area will be sent a Voter Information Letter. The letter provides relevant information for electors as well as the list of polling booths for the area.” The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) are also concerned that after the election people will assume that the Mareeba Shire Council will begin operating immediately. A new MSC will open its doors on January 2, 2014. Until that time the TRC will continue to be the local council for residents of the Mareeba Shire. The Commission will endeavour to declare the election results as soon as possible, however, it should be noted that postal votes have a 10 day period following polling day to be returned to the Retuning Officer to be counted.

TOM GILMORE

MICK BORZI

By Ryan Groube

By Ryan Groube Maintenance and upgrades of the region’s roads and infrastructure will not slip under a new Mareeba Shire Council (MSC), Mayoral candidate Mick Borzi has pledged. Mr Borzi said pre-deamalgamation scaremongering that a new MSC would not be able to maintain infrastructure at the same level as the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) was nonsense. “The transfer manager [Rod Ferguson] spoke at recent information sessions that a new council will quite clearly be viable,” he said. “The capital works figures projected by the TRC kept going up and up, they were fairy tales.” Mr Borzi said he wasn’t in a position to provide details on how the works program would be funded. “You need to keep an open mind on what you are doing until you have all the facts,” he said. “I can assure voters that none of our assets will be neglected.”

The six-term Mayor of the MSC said he was standing on his record and that should be enough for voters. “If the voters look at my record up until amalgamation it should then be obvious that the council as a whole will display good financial management,” he said. “If elected I will run it [the MSC] like I ran it before amalgamation.” Mr Borzi said the basic way to ensure that assets were properly maintained, upgraded when needed, and new assets built was to encourage growth. Accelerating business take-up of land at the Mareeba’s new industrial precinct is a key way of fostering growth according to Mr Borzi.

Mayoral candidate Tom Gilmore has pledged to “bring council processes into the real world” by moving to appoint a probity auditor at the first meeting of a new Mareeba Shire Council. A probity auditor is an independent contractor employed to oversee the processing of major tenders or contracts where there could be deemed to be a conflict of interest. Mr Gilmore said the auditor would ensure that all dealings involving contracts with councillors and senior staff’s families, close associates, and donors are above board. The auditor would attend the opening of tenders; oversee analysis of tenders before providing a certificate to MSC’s chief executive at the end of the process declaring it had been conducted properly. “This will only be triggered for major contracts where there is the possibility of a conflict of interest, a possible lack of proper process or the possibility of people questioning that process,” he said.

“I won’t have a situation where council enters into a contract and rumours start to go around that someone got a bit of help from someone at council. That is not on.” Minor issues like a councillor who may be a member of a service club voting to approve funding for, for instance, a barbeque would not trigger the auditor. Mr Gilmore said safeguards such as the pecuniary interest register and the requirement to declare conflicts of interest still remain in place and that the auditor was simply “another safeguard”. “If you want integrity in the processes of council, you’d support this,” he said.

Mareeba Shire Council

Gilmore plans to upgrade sports facilities

Tom Gilmore has announced where he will spend money collected through the Mareeba Leagues Club if elected Mayor of the Mareeba Shire Council.

By Ryan Groube

Rent collected from the Mareeba Leagues Club will be used to fund a Tom Gilmore-led council’s cornerstone youth policy. Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Mayoral candidate Mr Gilmore said the $216,000 council collected each year would be set aside in a reserve to upgrade sporting and community facilities “with a focus on youth”. “By way of application from groups or clubs they will be able to apply for a grant or, preferably, seed funding where we can say ‘here’s 10 grand, turn it into 30’,” Mr Gilmore said. “In my view it is entirely appropriate that the rent collected from a community-based organisation that lives through its membership is turned to the future of our youth.” Mr Gilmore said although the new MSC’s budget will be tight, revenue generated from the I G A Q L 7 6 1 7 _ 2 8 1 0 1 3 ME X . p d Mareeba Leagues Club was the only source of

Mr Cordenos is also in talks with the manager of bus company Trans North, Joe Paronella, over a deal to shuttle performers for the festival from Cairns and back. Mr Kempton, who attended this year’s festival in August alongside Assistant Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robert Cavallucci, said the event was worthy of the support. “Mareeba is home to people with diverse histories, cultures and traditions – these grants support events that bring us together to celebrate this as well as what we all have in common,” he said. “This is such an important not-for-profit event, not just for Mareeba but for the entire region. “I made sure the Minister knew how integral this event was for this community and could not be happier with the end result.” The 2013 festival, the 15th so far, featured 28 cultural performing groups with ancestry from all over the world, including Italy, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Australia.

By Boyd Robertson The Mareeba Multicultural Festival is set to become bigger and more diverse than ever after securing two years of State Government funding. Member for Cook David Kempton announced on October 21 that the government’s Valuing Diversity Program would support the festival with $15,000 grants in 2014 and 2015. Festival committee chairman Guiliano Cordenos welcomed the funding, saying it would allow the event to grow and diversify. “This is going to help us get bigger and better – there are always new people and groups joining the festival,” he said. “When they see it on TV or read about it in the newspapers they ring up and ask to join. “As a non-for-profit event we rely on government funding, donations and volunteers – without this support we simply could not make it a success.”

VOTE FOR CAROLYN SANDAVER Independent Candidate for Mareeba Shire Council

The Blue Man prime mover driven by iconic far northern truckie Toots Holzheimer is being targeted as the centrepiece of a new museum in Mareeba.

Bid to open museum By Ryan Groube The daughter of far north Queensland’s most famous truckie wants to establish a transportindustry museum in Mareeba. In her Blue Man prime mover known as ‘‘Toots’ Ol’ Girl’, Thora ‘Toots’ Holzheimer was the first female truckie to clock over one million miles on her long haul trips to Cape York before her death in Weipa in 1992. For the past 12 months, Toots’ daughter Donna Vawdrey has been trying to establish a shed in Mareeba to store her mother’s truck as a centrepiece of a new museum. ‘Toots’ Ol’ Girl’ is on show at the Diamantina museum in Winton and also spent 11 years on display at the National Road Transport Hall of Fame at Alice Springs.

The museum would include machinery used in the construction of the Peninsula Development Road as well as stories of the people who built it and those who drove it. A bid to establish the museum adjacent to the Mareeba Heritage Centre fell over with the State Government refusing to budge on the location for Mareeba’s new fire station. Mrs Vawdrey said although the inability to secure land had put the project back to square one she hadn’t given up. “The bottom line is that this is our history and the stories of the people who built it and travelled on it shouldn’t be forgotten,” Mrs Vawdrey said. “Mareeba is a great spot for the museum because it is a gateway to the north and was a central site in the development of the Cape.

GET READY! Disaster Awareness and Management Queenslanders are being urged to Get Ready this summer and stay safe. “What we need is a little bit of land and some funding to ensure the museum would be sustainable.” The National Road Transport Hall of Fame attracts about 80,000 visitors each year, something Mrs Vawdrey said a museum in Mareeba could build towards. “I have people who have told me that they went to the trucking [national road transport] hall of fame just to see Mum’s truck,” she said. “This could be happening in the north. We have always relied on the tourism industry up here and with all the Grey Nomads that come through I think it [the museum] would be popular.” Mrs Vawdrey said if anyone is willing to help get the project up and running could contact her on donna.vawdrey@gmail.com

Community Bank launches grant and sponsorship round The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches of Bendigo Bank wish to advise that procedures for grants and sponsorships will change for the 2014 year. All groups and organisations will now have to apply during the grant and sponsorship round commencing on November 11, 2013. Company Chairman Mr Gilbert Teitzel explained that, “our objective is to give certainty to sponsor groups and streamline the process of the many sponsorships that we do every month. “In addition we are launching a grant round and encourage charitable and NFP organisations to submit projects that offer clear public benefit for communities – contributing to their development in building social capital, community welfare, environmental, health, education or cultural areas.” The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Banks have returned more than $1.4 million

back into the Mareeba and Dimbulah communities over the past seven years through sponsorships, grants, dividend payments and local suppliers. “Strong support for the local Bendigo Bank branches provides the profits necessary to enable this level of community contribution and the board is very excited about these procedural changes that will allow us to look at increased investment into sponsorships and projects across our region.” said Mr Tietzel. Interested parties are encouraged to attend the following information nights: > Dimbulah 6th November, Canzians Restaurant at 5.30pm. > Mareeba: 7th November, Mareeba RSL at 5.30pm. The grant round will be open from 11th November to 11th December 2013.

Tip TWO: Sick of having a fruit bowl on the kitchen bench taking up space? Attach a hanging plant basket to the kitchen wall and marvel at the free space you now have.

Tip three: Place pillows in the dryer with a couple of tennis balls to help get them back to their “fluff stage”. It will also kill germs with the high heat.

Screening at the Cinema this week...

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

There is three brilliant movies on at the Rising Sun Cinema this weekend – including the brand new blockbuster, THOR – THE DARK WORLD, with Chris Hemsworth. It is one awesome story, with superb acting, great music and excellent cinematography – and you can catch it in Mareeba on the same day as the rest of Australia. Sandra Bullock and George Clooney come together in one of the current most successful films on the big screen. Both are sensational in GRAVITY – a drama thriller that will grab your attention. Also showing is the brilliant CAPTAIN PHILLIPS, based on true story and with excellent acting from Tom Hanks and a top supporting cast.

CAPTAIN PHILLIPS -

During the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship ‘Maersk Alabama’ by a crew of Somali pirates, the relationship between the Alabama's commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi) grows in intensity. Set on an incontrovertible collision course off the coast of Somalia, both men find themselves paying the human toll for economic forces outside of their control. Based on a true story.

GRAVITY -

Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), is a medical engineer on her first shuttle mission, with veteran astronaut Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney). But on a seemingly routine spacewalk, disaster strikes. The shuttle is destroyed, leaving Stone and Kowalsky completely alone - tethered to nothing but each other and spiralling out into the blackness. They have lost communication with Earth and any chance for rescue. As fear turns to panic, every gulp of air eats away at what little oxygen is left. But the only way home may be to go further out into the terrifying expanse of space. Review by Louise Keller: We are on edge throughout. There is no respite, no relief, no safety net and the fact that almost the entirety of the film takes place in space instils tension and a profound sense of claustrophobia. Tranquillity is contrasted by chaos; ethereal beauty by destructive disruption. Y Tu Mamá También director Cuarón has crafted an extraordinary survival story in which the solitary nature of the reality plays a huge role. Like Life of Pi and All Is Lost, in which Robert Redford battles the elements at sea in a boat, Gravity is a space adventure, in which the surrounding elements are the enemy. The story is simple; the consequences are not. This is a unique experience - engaging, confronting, thrilling and often terrifying. It is easy to follow George Clooney's instructions when he says: Enjoy the ride.

THOR 2 – The Dark World -

Marvel's Thor: The Dark World continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel's Thor and Marvel's The Avengers, Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos, but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet – one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

The LAND Desperate need for workers Peak horticulture organisation Growcom said Australian growers are increasingly looking for Australian workers to fill farm vacancies. Growcom chief executive Alex Livingstone said that while backpacker numbers had increased in Australia during 2012/2013, according to the Department of Immigration’s official data released in August, seasonal work was available for workers who wanted the jobs. “Fruit and vegetable crops must be harvested at their peak times so that Australians can enjoy quality produce. These crops won’t wait and so growers are keen to employ anyone who is willing and able to do the work,” Mr Livingstone said. “Our industry has many professional Australian pickers who follow the work from region to region and who are welcomed on the farms year after year because of their skill and efficiency in getting the work done. “The industry has utilised a range of labour sources over the years – including local transient and backpacker labour. “While the work suits young backpackers who travel from one region to another on holiday, following the harvest, the work is available to anyone willing to put in the hours to do it.” Mr Livingstone said that Growcom was working hard with the Queensland Government and the skills and training sector in order to create a career path for workers which goes beyond unskilled labouring tasks.

Poor lychee crop By Boyd Robertson The Tableland’s lychee crop this year is expected to barely reach half the levels of 2012 but local growers aren’t flustered, expecting a corresponding price rise for the fruit. Early picks at Gerhard Posselt’s farm at Mt Abbot have returned low numbers, something he attributes to a warm winter this year. “The early pick has been very ordinary, to tell the truth – I’ve probably got about half the crop that I had last year,” Mr Posselt said. “What we didn’t have this year was a very cold winter, as well as having a possible drier wet season, so the trees have put out shoots for leaves instead of flowers for fruit. “I’ll probably pick about 10,000 cartons this season compared to about 18,000 last year – there‘s nobody I know of up here with a big crop this year.” Local Australian Lychee Growers Association (ALGA) representative Frank Bosnic, who grows at Emerald Creek, also suspects a season of thin pickings thanks to the weak winter, but warned it was still too early to tell for sure. But he said the low pick wasn’t reason to panic, however, expecting the low supply to raise prices across the market. “Like back in 2010, if there’s less fruit, it means prices are good, pretty simply,” he said. “I can’t make exact predictions but say I was doing about $25 a carton last year, we could be going up toward $35 or $40 a carton this season. “As long as you’ve got some fruit on your trees you’ll make some money.” Mr Bosnic, however, wasn’t as optimistic. “There’s a cut-off point, things always have a cost to them,” he said. “People always say ‘it’s going to get offset by the price’ but it never does.”

Mareeba lychee grower Gerhard Posselt, along with other farmers in the region, is expecting a much lower crop this season due to a stunted winter earlier in the year, but is also looking forward to lower supply raising prices.

Numbers improved this week at sale Mareeba Combined Agents penned a total of 382 head of Prime and Store cattle for this week’s market. Numbers did improve by 61 head, values improved for the better finished heavy Bullocks and Cows but rates remained unchanged for Heavy Slaughter Bulls. Bullocks and Steers suitable for the Local trade sold to values +6 c/ kg higher than last week and Bullocks suitable for the Export Slaughter trade improved by +19 c/ kg for the best on offer.

Cows suitable for the Local Wholesale market gained +8 c/ kg and returned a higher average than the previous week. Cows suitable for the Export Slaughter trade improved in value with some very heavy Cows selling to rates +6 c/ kg above last week’s top of 115 c/ kg. Store type Steers and Heifers have made little improvements due to the lack of rain and Buyer confidence.

Adam Roy didn’t muck around against Innisfail

Roy goes Whack!

Love of the game: Above, the 1992 Bulls Premier team photo, Tony is fifth from the left, inset, a young Tony Panetta

Hall of Fame honour for Tony Panetta By Boyd Robertson Newest Mareeba United Football Club (MUFC) Hall of Fame inductee Antonio ‘Tony’ Panetta has reflected on a lifetime of the World Game after receiving the honour at the club’s awards night on October 19. Panetta started with the club in 1987, when he was 15 years old. Starting at striker before rotating through the back line, Panetta classified himself as only an “average” player, but his love of the game kept him on the field for 17 years until a major medical episode in 1991 forced him to quit. Blood clots had formed and blocked vital passageways in his left leg, causing huge damage and immense pain. Several months and more than a dozen surgeries Panetta was clear of the problem, but had lost an entire muscle from the limb and would never play competitively again. After several years of “sitting around and feeling sorry for himself”, Panetta gained a second wind when watching his daughter receive soccer coaching.

“This guy wasn’t exactly providing her with the best training and I thought to myself ‘I’m better than that’, so I started coaching the FNQ girls team down in Cairns,” he said. “Nobody wanted to touch the girls team at that point but I took them on.” Panetta later moved back up to Mareeba, coaching the junior Bulls boys side for four years before moving on to coach the Premiers side for a year and becoming assistant coach for the club’s venture into state-level play for three years. After that he headed back down to Cairns to coach students at the Centre Of Excellence program, including his youngest son Nicholas. Keeping the sport in the family was never hard, as he explained. “The whole family is soccer-oriented,” he said. Panetta said his induction into the MUFC Hall of Fame was one of the greatest honours of his life. “As a player, gaining that kind of recognition from the club you started out with is just the best,” he said. “I’m very appreciative of what they have given me.”

A brilliant allround performance from Adam Roy has edged the Bandits ahead in what is shaping as a thrilling two-day game against Innisfail. Playing at home, the undefeated Bandits won the toss and went in to bat before making an aggressive declaration at eight down for 194. The declaration gave the Bandits attack an hour to bowl at Innisfail with an inspired spell for Adam Roy swinging the momentum the home sides way. Roy took two wickets for 14 runs off seven overs before Innisfail recovered, heading to stumps at two for 56. Earlier, Roy was the only Mareeba batsman to get going, bludgeoning an impressive 61. His only real support came in the form of William Rofe who compiled 34 runs and backpacker Abbas Ghulam who made 25. Bandits president Bomber Adams said the final day of the match this Sunday should be a corker. “It was a pretty bold declaration made by Payney [Captain Brendan Payne],” he said. “It should be a pretty close game but I think the boys will roll them.”

On Saturday, the under 16s hosted Innisfail in a Kerribee Park runfest. With returning representative stars, Mareeba was far too good with Mark Wilcox belting an incredible century off just 47 balls. Matthew Lep also starred with a brutal 72 off 35 balls as Mareeba made 297 off just 32 overs. In reply, Innisfail hobbled to five for 100 at the end of their 32 overs. “The Under 16 side we got this year is going to take a fair bit of beating,” Bomber said. “They were the minor premiers last year Innisfail and we gave them a bit of a touch up.” The Under 14s travelled to Innisfail for their weekly fixture. Batting first Mareeba made 160 for the loss of seven wickets. In reply, a young Innisfail team could only manage four for 49 with Mareeba’s bowlers topscoring - giving away 20 extras. “Innisfail had a number of younger players playing up and our bowling attack is very good,” he said. “If a club wants to play younger players up a grade that is fine but we were prepared to be ruthless with them and not let up.” The Under 12s beat Atherton in a one day game by five runs.

Tokesi named Heat coach

The Mareeba Junior Rugby League Club drew the winner of its 'Darren Lockyer End of an Era' fund raising raffle at the Mareeba Annuals Race day meet. The raffle winner Warren Mulla was in attendance and was presented his prize by former Queensland State of Origin, Broncos, Cowboys NRL player Carl Webb and MJRL President Rob McCarthy. MJRL would like to thank everyone that participated for their generous support in 2013.

He presided over the Far North’s most successful state league side and now Peter Tokesi is ready to help the FNQ FC Heat to similar heights as head coach of the club’s 2014 National Premier League side. The FNQ FC Board of Directors made the appointment this week after accepting the resignation of previous NPL Head Coach, Martin Docherty. Docherty has stepped down due to personal reasons. Tokesi brings an incredible wealth of football experience to the role. Local fans remember fondly his tenure as Head Coach of the FNQ Bulls, the Mareeba-based side which competed in the Queensland State League. Tokesi guided the team to second in the league standings in 2012 –the QSL’s final year before it was

replaced by the NPL. He won a National Soccer League title in 1997 with the Brisbane Strikers as Assistant Coach under Frank Farina. Tokesi also enjoyed a successful playing career in the NSL at the renowned club but the new role with the Heat rates among his career highlights. “It’s an exciting challenge,” Tokesi said. “The National Premier League, in terms of standards, it’s a very high competition, particularly with more Brisbane teams coming in. “But the challenge is exciting, the players love that and I do too.” Gaining more support from the Far North is one of Tokesi’s main priorities. “I suppose the big challenge is getting the community behind (FNQ FC) and I think we’ll do that with performance on the pitch.”

Aussie wrangles Croc For the first time in eight years an Australian has won the Crocodile Trophy. Mark Frendo conquered the nine day, 900 kilometre race in 30 hours 40 minutes and 17 seconds, ahead of Canadian Cory Wallace and Jiri Krivanek from the Czech Republic. The 28-year-old had to defend his lead over the past few stages against pre-race favourite Cory Wallace, the Canadian National Marathon Champion and Mongolia Challenge winner.

At the finish line at Cooktown on Sunday, Frendo said the win had motivated him to keep racing but that he was too buggered to commit to returning to defend his title next year. “I’m so happy, it hasn’t set in really yet,” he said. The nine-stage event features four stages that pass through the Tableland. Crocodile Trophy rrganiser Gerhard Schönbacher said that he and his team have already been scouting new and even more exciting race tracks for next year.

“The Crocodile Trophy is the toughest mountain bike stage race in the world,” he said. We feature a wide variety of stage routes including fun and exciting mountain bike sections as well as less technical yet tough trails and Outback Highways, which challenge the endurance skills of our riders.” Liesbeth Hessens from Belgian led from start to finish to take out the women’s classification. The Crocodile Trophy will return to Cairns and Far North Queensland in October 2014.

A marathon Futsal match By Ryan Groube

Tropical Challenge B Grade winners ‘Mighty Mareeba’, Ryan Groube, Scott Macleod and Cassie and Judy Burness

Mighty Mareeba By Ryan Groube the Tableland sent four tennis teams down the hill on Sunday to take part in the aptly-named Tropical Teams Challenge at the Cairns International Tennis Centre. The annual round robin event sees clubs from across the far north playoff in a series of doubles fixtures across three divisions. Each fixture had three sets of eight games with the highest cumulative game winner at the end of the day crowned champions. The Tableland A Grade team; Libor Konicek, Jason Rosendahl, Roger Brock-Collins and Jimmy Scutt led the competition after the first two rounds but faded to finish second. Two Tableland teams competed in B Grade with ‘Mighty Mareeba’, pictured above, leading from start to finish to take the title. Team captain Cassie Burness said the standard of tennis had been high despite the heat and unfamiliar

courts at Cairns, which are slower and more suspectable to spin than the courts in Mareeba. “Everyone was feeling it a bit by the end of the day,” she said. “We managed to hang in games pretty well against some really tough opposition.” Mareeba’s second B Grade team; consisting of Charlie and Connie Martens, Kim Peckham and Mathew Palmer finished the competition in a tie for third. In C Grade, Mareeba finished as runners up with Jesse Anderson, Narelle Duncan, Alice Palmer and David Parsons making up the team. The event was put on by the Gordonvale and District Tennis Association with secretary Jeff King Koi raising the possibility of Mareeba hosting the event next year. “Thanks for everyone coming out, it has been a good day and we’ll do it all again next year,” he said. JRT Geniuses took out the A Grade crown.

IF walking for 18 hours isn’t enough, participants in the looming Tablelands Relay for Life have been invited to take part in a marathon game of indoor soccer which will be held next door. Tablelands Futsal Club (TFC) has decided to run an 18-hour social game of Futsal at Merrilands Hall, Atherton on November 9 and 10 to coincide with Tablelands Relay for Life. For a small donation community members can run on, play for as long as they like before heading back to complete another lap of the circuit at the neighbouring Atherton Showgrounds. TFC president Nigel Markwick said the event was not aiming to compete with the Relay for Life but to give participants in the cancer fund-raiser another thing to do throughout the evening. “It will just be a social game where anyone can come along and join, have a kick around and then carry on with the relay,” he said. “It is a marathon attempt and it will be a hard ask to keep it going for the whole time but I am confident we can achieve it if we get the support of the community.” Organiser of the Tablelands Relay for Life Leon Tunnie said the futsal event will help complement a bumper

evening of entertainment at the event. Mr Tunnie said the Atherton community traditionally would stay on for the entire 18 hours and having the futsal game next door “would work in quite well”. “We like to keep everyone there for the whole 18 hours and anything that can help us with that is great,” he said. Mr Tunnie said donations and team nominations had been “a little slow”. By deadline 35 teams had registered while Mr Tunnie said he would be satisfied with a fund-raising total near last year’s mark of $166,000. “There doesn’t seem to be a huge amount of money around this year but usually we get a last minute rush and we take teams right up to just a few days out from the event,” he said. “This is a hugely important event for us as a community to say ‘No’ to cancer. Money raised doesn’t just go to support services for people with cancer but also to research programs. “One out of two people aged under 80 will be diagnosed with cancer. This is a disease that no one can escape until we are able to find a cure.” To register, find a team or sponsor someone visit www.relayforlife.org.au. The longest game of futsal lasted for 40 hours and was achieved by Aid In Action Futsal in Torndheim, Norway on October 14-16, 2012.
