he Federal Government’s asylum seeker policy has been branded a welcome mat for refugees to enter Australia illegally through the far north. Federal Member for Leichhardt Warren Entsch and State Member for Cook David Kempton have slammed the new policy which came into effect on July 19. Under the regional settlement arrangements asylum seekers will be sent to Papua New Guinea for assessment and if found to be a refugee will be settled there. Mr Kempton and Mr Entsch said the Australian border on Cape York is largely unmanned and that refugees could easily find their way into the country through the Torres Strait. Travel between PNG and the Torres Strait is fluid with the Torres Strait Treaty allowing traditional inhabitants to travel to certain islands within a protected area without having to carry any identification. In 2012-13, there were 24,513 traditional visits made by PNG inhabitants to the islands allowed for in the treaty. The only requirement of this travel is that an inhabitant gets a “prior advice notice” from a registered signatory (village chairman). A spokesperson for the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said movement within Torres Strait was monitored by 15 officers from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. “The Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC) has 15 movement monitoring officers in the Torres Strait who work closely with island councils and the community to manage the traditional flow of people under the Treaty and report on any other movements in the region,” the spokesperson said. “Non-traditional inhabitants that arrive in the Torres Strait without a visa are unlawful non-citizens who are subject to mandatory immigration detention and may be transferred to a designated regional processing country.” Member for Cook David Kempton said the Federal Government is naive if it thinks that refugees settled in PNG will give up on moving to Australia. New plan for igloo ACCOUNT MANAGER Natasha Srhoj

SENIOR JOURNALIST Ryan Groube

JOURNALIST Boyd Robertson

By Boyd Robertson A plan to convert the igloo at the Rocky Creek Memorial Park into a military museum by Atherton Rotary has been given a potential boost by a visit from Federal Opposition members. Candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin showed Senator Michael Ronaldson, the Shadow Minister for Veterans Affairs, around the Rocky Creek facility on July 22. Mr Ronaldson was in far north Queensland for two veterans’ forums in Mareeba and Gordonvale, where he met with the representatives of the region’s main veteran’s organisations including the RSL and Legacy. The Rocky Creek Memorial park stands on the site of a major military hospital during the Second World War, with about 2000 staff and capacity for more than 5000 patients, most of whom were Allied soldiers wounded during fighting in the Papua New Guinea and Pacific campaigns. The igloo served as the facility’s cinema, giving rehabilitated soldiers a chance

for some entertainment before they were returned to the front lines. Atherton Rotary became trustees of the structure from the Tablelands Regional Council three months ago, and are planning to convert it to a military museum. Ms Ikin said bringing Mr Ronaldson to the facility would mean it would not be forgotten if the LNP becomes government. “It’s always easier to have the decisionmaker up here and seeing it with his own eyes,” she said. “If I win Kennedy I’ll be an advocate for the project, definitely – my grandfather fought in PNG and his brother was trained here on the Tableland.” Mr Ronaldson said he was hopeful the project was a success, but stopped short of promising actual funding. “With everyone working together I hope that this could be achieved as a short to medium-term goal,” he said. “I will continue to work with Noeline Ikin to determine what is needed and what funding avenues might be available.” Atherton Rotary president John Mont-

gomery said refurbishing the igloo would promote tourism in the area by attracting the families of former servicemen. “I think there’s a very tangible interest in the facility from people all over the country,” he said. “The Rocky Creek facility is ideally positioned along the rail trail, so it’s an attractive stop-off point along that route.” Mr Montgomery said Atherton Rotary will need about $300,000 to restore the igloo and establish the museum. “We’ll be falling on our own reserves for this, as well as putting requests to the community for both cash and in-kind donations – anything like timber, labour or expertise will be very handy,” he said. “We’ve already had a great reaction from the community and we are confident that we’ll raise enough.” During the Second World War the Tablelands became a vital staging point for campaigns in the Pacific and PNG, with army camps established at Tinaroo, Kairi, Atherton, Wongabel, Herberton, Wondecla, Ravenshoe and Garnet.

“It is ridiculous to think that refugees once settled in PNG will stay there,” he said. “The reality is that the Australian border in the north is largely unprotected and is fairly unprotectable. “If any of these refugees really wanted to they could get from PNG to Cairns they could do it fairly easily in two days.” Mr Entsch said refugees, particularly Muslims, resettled in PNG would find integrating into the devoutly catholic country difficult. “People need to understand that PNG’s education system is run by the churches and that the country is deeply Christian,” he said. “The thousands of asylum seekers Kevin Rudd intends on sending to PNG simply won’t be accepted by the community and anyone resettled there will be looking for a way to get out. “They [people smugglers] are simply going to change the way they do business and the reality is that in a small aircraft or even a dingy it won’t take them long to get to the Australian mainland.” Labor candidate for Leichhardt Billy Gordon accused Mr Kempton and Mr Entsch of “fear mongering”. Mr Gordon said the idea that refugees would be able to simply slip through the Torres Strait undetected were ridiculous. “If people want to try and sneak through the Torres Strait to Australia they will be detained,” he said. “This is just the LNP fear mongering and trying to test our resolve on this issue. “The most important thing here is to stop children and women drowning in our seas by telling these people smugglers that coming to Australia is no longer on the table.”

‘Our industry is under threat’

Tough times: Cattle industry leaders Alison Penfold (Australian Livestock Exporters Association), Jed Matz (CEO, Cattle Council of Australia), Brent Finlay (Vice President, NFF), Luke Bowen (NTCA), Peter Hall (Vice-President, Cattle Council), David Warriner (President, NTCA), The Hon. John Cobb, Ian Burnett (President AgForce) address graziers at the Northern Beef Stakeholder Forum. Summit some progress had been made but that many graziers still faced an uncertain future. “We went down there to make sure that Government is aware that the landscape for cattle producers is changing on a daily basis,” he said. “The continuing inability for us to market our product has created a real cash flow problem right across our northern graziers that have put the sustainability of the whole industry in jeopardy. “In the industry right now we are getting the lowest prices for our product, our debt burden is the highest it has been and because of the drought many have sold next year’s cattle at a 50 per cent reduction in return. That means next year we will have a 50 per cent reduction in production. “It is a vicious cycle and government need to be aware that what the industry is going through right now is not just a short-term hiccup.” Mr Hughes said the devastation the live cattle trade ban to Indonesia had been crippling too many graziers and was only recently looking like being resolved. On July 19, Indonesia announced that it would

he need for a cattle processing plant in far north Queensland, revision of a financial assistance package and rebuilding ties with Indonesia were the key agenda items for graziers at a national cattle forum last week. On July 23, about 120 northern Australian cattle producers descended on Mount Isa for the Northern Beef Steakholder Forum convened by the Cattle Council of Australia, NT Cattlemens Association, Meat and Livestock Association and AgForce. Barry Hughes a grazier from North Head Station near Georgetown attended the meetings as chair of the Northern Gulf Grazing Group and the Beef Crisis Steering Committee. Mr Hughes said the key reason for attending the meeting was to get face time with Federal agriculture minister Joel Fitzgibbon, the opposition’s shadow minister John Cobb as well as Queensland agriculture minister John McVeigh. Mr Hughes said since more than 500 graziers gathered at Richmond in May for the Beef Crisis

accept an additional 25,000 animals for export over the coming three months as well as lifting weight restrictions. “It is all about market access and for the northern Australia beef herd the availability of export markets is essential so it [the Indonesian decision] is showing we are at least moving in the right direction,” Mr Hughes said. A beef processing facility in far north Queensland also needed to become a priority according to Mr Hughes. “There is only one beef processing facility in north Queensland and that is at Townsville. The waiting list is so long that by the time they get there they have lost 100 kilograms of body weight,” he said. “There is a dire need for another processing plant that can focus of sending beef directly to south-east Asia as a quartered product.” Mr McVeigh acknowledged the difficulties facing the industry at the forum and said if the industry continued to weaken the State Government would not rule out boosting the financial assistance package.

Mr Fitzgibbon said he regretted the live cattle ban to Indonesia in 2011 but that the focus now needs to shift to how the government can held the industry get through the tough times. Liberal National Party candidate for Kennedy Noeline Ikin attended the forum and said while it provided a “useful chance for communication” there was no tangible actions that will come as a result of the forum. “I think the grazing industry has a bright future ahead of it but the solutions to a lot of its problems are going to have to be long-term fixes. And that’s a problem because farmers right now are looking at their situation as just trying to survive the next couple of months,” she said. “Landholders would like to hear more about clear decisions that are relevant to them. “General discussion is good, but when you go back to the farm and look at a cow that’s staring back at you needing a feed that isn’t there, it doesn’t help.” The forum ran from 11am to 5pm before a network function at the Mount Isa Civic Centre from 6pm until 9pm.

Mareeba cinema seeking a name A new cinema operating out of the Mareeba RSL is on track to open its doors in early September but is missing one key component – a name. The Mareeba RSL has put the call out for primary and secondary students in Mareeba to come up with a name for the cinema. Mareeba RSL general manager Warren Thompson said the only requirement for the name is that “it be in the theme of the RSL”. “We have the Diggers Bistro and the Flak Jacket Shed so we are looking for an original

name for the cinema that is in that sort of vein,” he said. “We wanted to give students a chance at naming the cinema because our hope is for the next five to seven years they will be the primary ones supporting us. “Our hope is that this gives them a little ownership of the cinema and I can’t wait to see what they come up with.” The student who submits the winning entry will receive a three-month gold pass to the cinema which will entitle them to unlimited screen-

ings for two adults and two children. The winning students class will also be given a behind the scenes tour of the cinema. The 175-seat cinema will feature an 8-metre wide, 3.2-metre high retractable screen with 3D capacity and will operate seven days a week with up to three screenings a day. It will show first-release movies, screening the latest blockbusters at the same time as the major cinema complexes on the coast. For more details about the competition contact the Mareeba RSL on 4092 1396.

LNP branch overdramatic In last week’s Express (July 24, page four), Peter Spies Chairman, Atherton Branch, LNP over dramatizes his so called link between Kevin Rudd and George Orwell’s novel Animal Farm. Whilst I am no admirer of Prime Minister Rudd, he is streaks ahead of the pathetic, limp, no policies and always negative, Tony Abbott. Why the LNP got rid of Turnbull is staggering. By the way, when it comes to stabbing in the back, the LNP are on par with Labor. The now much chastised and according to LNP members “scumbag” Peter Slipper, actually got Abbott across the line against Turnbull by just one vote. Of course Slipper was then regarded by Abbott as a Liberal politician of the highest calibre, extremely honest and hard working, almost a miracle man. Queensland LNP branch members and supporters need to maintain the rage and stop the outrageous pay rises about to be given to our politicians. Are they and their LNP stooges going to support the Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth, when he introduces a bill to stop these rises? Most pollies are in line for a $57,000 plus raise, while Campbell Newman and his cronies in the top echelon receive better than $100,000 more. This is outrageous. This by a government that has cut the heart out of the public service, slashed monies to renewable energy schemes and raised taxes and charges such as electricity by more than 22 per cent.

The Express reserves the right to edit letters

Campbell Newman on his return from a recent tax payer funded holiday, told Queenslanders that he would fix the pay debacle, but it would take three months. Meanwhile the proposed pay rises will go through, so hopefully in three months, most of the public will have forgotten the greedy thieving grab! Where are the objections from the far northern LNP members on the pay issue? Where is their support of the up and coming bill to be delivered by the Member of Dalrymple to increase the farm gate milk price for our dairy farmers? Silence is golden. Jerry Micola Tolga Don’t suffer alone It has long been a concern of mine, and of Cancer Council Queensland, that the emotional and psychological impacts of cancer often go untreated. “Cooktown and Townsville are also very RV-friendly but Cairns really isn’t, which keeps a lot of the nomads away from there.” Mr Thompson said there was a huge economic benefit to a region that hosted a large nomad population for any amount of time, estimating about $35 million would be ultimately be injected into the Tablelands economy the as a result of both Christmas in July and the Mareeba Rodeo. “If you think about it, all the people here are going into local shops, local businesses to pick up their supplies,” he said. “They’re also visiting a lot of the tourist areas and entertainment.” Nomads are a diverse bunch, not just retired Australian couples but also solo travellers and international tourers. “We tend to go around the country clockwise to get the best winds – we also keep a bit inland to avoid the congestion,” Mr Thompson said. “You get to know a lot of the other guys on the road and you rarely see the same place twice, even on your second or third time round. “The singles form their own groups as well, often they find someone else and pair up, then they have to decide whose vehicle to travel in.” The Australian Bureau of Statistics indicates that there are more than 54,000 registered campervans in Australia, with an estimated nine caravans for every campervan.

rey nomads from all over the country gathered at Davies Park in Mareeba last week for the annual Christmas in July meet up. The event drew 333 vehicles to Davies Park, including caravans, campervans, RV’s, slide-ons, slideouts and fifth-wheels. Organized by the Far North Nomads and the Barron River Ramblers, both chapters of the Campervan and Motorhome Club of Australia (CMCA), the event is now in its 16th year and gave nomads a chance to meet up, swap stories and have some fun. Activities on offer included dancing, disc bowling, the Christmas in July dinner on Saturday night and markets at the open day. At the dinner, nomads danced the night away to music by local bands Hillbilly Goats, Now or Never and Kickstart. Catering for the dinner was provided by Mareeba Leagues Club. The open market day on Sunday featured operators from the Mareeba Markets in addition to displays of nomadic essentials like camping equipment, solar panels and new motorhome models. Nomads were happy to hear at the event that the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) is considering fencing off the adjacent Eales Park and making

it available for the use of the nomads next year. Councillor McGrath proposed the idea, which would greatly increase the amount of vehicles that can attend the event if taken up. Other welcome news included an announcement by Cassowary Coast Regional Council that it will offer the use of Tully Showgrounds to the nomads for 40 hours of free camping to 60 vehicles a year. Event organiser and Far North Nomads president Milford Virtue it was a positive sign for local councils supporting grey nomads. “The Tablelands Regional Council is very good to us – they offer us the use of Davies Park and it’s good to know they are considering expanding the available area,” he said to Mareeba Express at Davies Park. “So far it has been a very successful event as always – we have a lot of great local sponsors and we’re always trying to direct our campers to shop at their businesses.” Errol Thompson and his wife Hilda have been nomads for 10 years and have attended the last few Christmas in July events. “We always have a good time up here, the weather is good, the facilities are good and the people are friendly,” he said. “A lot of the travellers up here have stayed over since the Mareeba Rodeo, they’re getting away from the cold weather down south.”

Cook Shire hands down budget Cook Shire Council has signed off on its 2013-2014 Budget this week with an average total rates and utility charges increase of 2.7 per cent. Pensioner concessions and early payment discounts have been retained. Mayor Peter Scott said the Cook Shire was largely dependent on Government funding. “Cook Shire is unique - we have many challenges but also opportunities,” he said.

“This Budget, although necessarily conservative, has a strong focus on economic growth and sustainability. “We have tried to get the balance right between being proactive and building for the future, while at the same time recognising and enhancing our treasured character and lifestyle.” The budget has an operating deficit of $6.9 million which will drop to about $2.7 million as a result of some quirks in grant funding delivery. say on the future direction of the far north and participate in The Queensland Plan - A 30-year vision for Queensland. The Queensland Plan was announced in February 2013 with a summit held in Mackay in May and a second summit scheduled for October. The plan will be released later in the year. At the May summit, Rio Tinto’s Gareth Manderson, Leon Yeatman from Mapoon and Emily Vohland from Mareeba represented Cook. This latest announcement from Mr Kempton represents the chance for the rest of the community to have a say. Mr Kempton has chosen to undertake a wide-reaching survey and a twoday intensive workshop later in August to formulate his electorate’s response to the plan. The online survey will explore who we are, what we currently experience in the far north, and what we want for the future. The survey is open to all with an interest in the Cook electorate, and unlike previous surveys, the results will be fully mapped and made public. To complete the survey, visit http:// survey.valuescentre.com/dynamicexchange Username: 092013 Password: values State rules out ‘cracker night’ Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Andrew Cripps will not ask his Department to undertake a review of regulations to reinstate ‘cracker night’ or ‘Guy Fawkes night’. Mr Cripps said a ban on unlicensed people buying, selling, using or possessing fireworks in Queensland had been in force since 1972. “Fireworks are not toys and are very dangerous in the hands of inexperienced, untrained people. They can result in death or serious injury, including loss of sight, loss of limbs and serious burns,” Mr Cripps said. “At the time cracker night was banned in Queensland, fireworks were the third-largest cause of eye injury in the State.

“Each year serious incidents occurred, which sometimes left people with permanent serious injuries and disabilities. “I’m not a supporter of the nanny state or the fun police, but the fact remains fireworks are a type of explosive and these products are properly regulated for good community safety reasons. “The same ban applies in all other States and territories except the Northern Territory. “I acknowledge many Queenslanders would have fond memories of cracker night, but modern fireworks and explosives were more powerful than in the past. “The use of fireworks in Queensland is strictly regulated to ensure that only licensed and properly-trained fireworks operators can handle them in a safe environment at public fireworks displays. “Anyone caught possessing or using illegal fireworks will be prosecuted and the penalties are severe - up to a $44,000 fine or six months in jail.” Mt Baldy fun run Atherton Lioness Club will host a fun run in the Mt Baldy State Forest on August 18, as part of the Atherton Maize Festival. For more information contact Glenda McAuliffe on 4095 5197. Funding boost for gym Children at Mareeba Gymnastics Club are jumping, tumbling and somersaulting with joy following a $1200 grant from Telstra’s Kids Fund program. The local gymnastics club will now be able to purchase protective floor matting to increase the safety of its future gymnastic champions. It also hopes the new matting will help promote the club’s headquarters far and wide as a modern facility perfect for major competitive gymnastic meets, attracting competitors from across the region. It is just one of 625 community nonprofit organisations across Australia that will this year share in $750,000 of Telstra’s Kids Fund grants available through the Telstra Foundation.

2013 Atherton Gem Festival NEW VENUE!

Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth shows off the official Emirates Melbourne Cup along with Herberton State School students Amy Shade, Liam Drew, Lilly Henning and Piper Gurkle at the Herberton Historic Village on July 26.

Melbourne Cup a coup for Herberton Village By Boyd Robertson

A

n appearance by the official Emirates Melbourne Cup on July 26 has proven to be a charity windfall for the Herberton Historic Village. The Village, owned by Craig and Connie Kimberly, used the arrival of the solid-gold Cup to raise more than $800 for the restoration of the historic Herberton-Atherton railway line. The money, given as gold-coin donations by people arriving to see the Cup, will go toward the construction of a shed for workers to store tools in while working on the railway. The Cup, handmade from solid gold and valued at more than $175,000, visited the Historic Village as part of a national tour promoting the Melbourne race. It arrived at the village on a historic railway car with great fanfare, carried by Tour Ambassador Shelia Laxon, the first female to train a Melbourne Cup-winning horse. It was presented for public viewing by Victoria Racing Club representative Joe McGrath, Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth and Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long. Herberton Historic Village won the right to host the Cup for the day after a successful tender to the Victoria Racing Club that demonstrated the venue’s link to the racing industry. Herberton’s races once outclassed the Melbourne Cup in terms of prize money – in 1884, the Bally-Finnegan race, held where the Wondecla airstrip now stands, offered a purse of more than £4800, which equates to more than $1 million today. The Melbourne Cup did not exceed the BallyFinnegan race until 1888. Herberton is also the final resting place of Australia’s true first female jockey.

Disguising herself as a man, Sydney woman Wilhemena Smith rode under the alias of “Bill Smith” in races all over far north Queensland in the 1940s and 1950s. Keeping her conversations with other jockeys to a minimum and arriving to races wearing racing silks under workmen’s clothes, Ms Smith successfully maintained her disguise until her death in 1975. Pam O’Neill and Linda Jones were the first female jockeys to be officially licensed in Australia. Mr Katter said the Cup’s appearance at the village highlighted the need for ad-

ditional investment in tourism projects south of Cairns. “Cairns sends most of its eco-tourism north to the Daintree and Port Douglas, which isn’t always the best move in my opinion,” Mr Katter said. “Down here we have proper jungle, not just rainforest scrub; we’ve got cassowaries, croc farms and white-water rafting. “There needs to be a capitalisation on this – particularly since the last time I took a drive on the Great Ocean Road, I stopped to watch grass grow because it was more exciting.”

TOWN AND COUNTRY CLOTHING

The Atherton Tableland Mineral and lapidary Club will be holding its annual gem festival this Sunday, August 4, and the popular event now has a new location. Everyone new and old to welcome to come along. The Club moved from the Atherton Show Grounds in November and is now resident at the Tolga Racetrack Reserve. Easy to find, turn at Tolga Woodworks and follow the signs. Last year saw a turn-out of rock hounds from all over with visiting stallholders, displays and club demonstrations of jewellery making, faceting and rock cutting. Club executive said that they anticipate an increase in stallholders this year as the success of previous years is now being recognized. Admission is free and food and raffles will be available. The festival coincides with the Tolga Monthly Market, so visitors will have great shopping choices. Those interested will be able to walk through the new premises and will be amazed at the work done by members to bring the building up to a safe and attractive work environment. The Club’s curator now hosts a very informative rock, mineral and gem museum, specifically featuring local products and finds. A great place for the school children to browse. The club is keen to welcome past members for a cuppa and of course to pick their brains of local fossicking successes. An important message that the Club executive wish to promote is that “don’t throw away those rocks in the shed when grandad is finished with them”, call the Club as good rocks are now difficult to find. They will even pick them up. For further information, contact, Secretary Ken on 4095 5628.

Grow me instead….

It is a fact, sad but true, that most of Australia’s worst environmental weeds are garden escapes. That is, they were brought into Australia because someone thought that they would look nice in gardens, but before we knew it they had jumped the white picket fence and started to invade our vast continent. So, the Australian nursery industry has joined with the Australian Government in the fight against invasive garden plants, and has instigated a programme called “Grow Me Instead” to assist gardeners to avoid planting potential weeds and to choose non-invasive plants instead. Go to the website www.growmeinstead.com.au. This website is easy to use, and is a wonderful resource for gardeners and landholders. Here’s just some of the helpful suggestions: The Cocos Palm (or Queen Palm) is an introduced palm from South America. It is fast growing and very resilient, and birds and bats love the fruit. So (you guessed it, if you didn’t know already) it has spread far and wide throughout our countryside, coming up all through our gardens and native forests. In short, it has made a right pest of itself. Here at Yuruga, we are constantly pulling out seedlings that come up all through our gardens, and if we weren’t vigilant we would have a forest of Queen Palms and nothing else. Native palms such as the Alexander Palm and Foxtail Palm are much more suitable for tropical gardens. Another pest that comes up all through our gardens is the exotic Ardisia, a shrub with thickish leathery leaves, reddish new growth, and masses of red to purple-black berries which are spread in huge numbers by birds. Consequently they come everywhere in gardens throughout our region, and in the bush. Some people’s gardens are a forest of Ardisia and virtually nothing else. So you do need to be vigilant and pull them out straight away before they take over. Replace them with some of our beautiful tropical native shrubs such as Lilly-pillies, Gardenias, Phyllanthus and Cleistanthus. The Grow Me Instead website is a wealth of information. In case you are tempted to plant other invasive species such as Mother-in-Law’s Tongue, Canna Lily, Neem Tree, Brazilian Cherry, Duranta …the list goes on…, go to the website and choose a non-invasive native alternative. Or, call into Yuruga and we’ll do all the thinking for you. We are passionate about preserving our natural environment.

Happy (weed-free) gardening!

Wall of Hope in Mareeba Pictured above is the artist impression of the ‘Wall of Hope’ which is to be built at Centenary Park, Mareeba, with all proceeds going to Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ). The project is being driven by CCQ Hope Ambassador and Mareeba resident, Vilma Moriconi. The wall will be the only one of its kind in far north Queensland. To be a part of this special project you can purchase a brick for $50 and have either the name of your lost loved one, the name of a survivor or a cancer fighter or even an individual or business who wants to show their support. This is a way of giving back to the community – everyone can be a part of the fight against cancer. Anyone interested in purchasing a brick or bricks, on the Wall of Hope can contact Ms Moriconi at 0427 144 104 or drop into The Express office on Walsh Street.

STRAIGHT TALKING with Tablelands Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long

• It is now only about five months until the de-amalgamation of the existing Tablelands Regional Council takes effect. This complex process is being carried out according to State Government regulations. Central to that process is the establishment of a Transfer Committee, of TRC CEO (Ian Church) and the Mareeba Transfer Manager (Rod Ferguson). This committee makes all of the decisions about how the de-amalgamation is to occur. One of the key roles of the Transfer Committee is to decide de-amalgamation costs. They are making sure that the future TRC ratepayers are not subsidising the establishment of the new Mareeba Shire Council and also that the cost of establishing the new Mareeba Shire Council is as low as practical. As at 28th June 2013, the de-amalgamation cost incurred is $256,000. At present, the Committee is focussing on working out which of the current Council staff will work for each of the two future councils. New TRC will be done first and this should be finalised by late August, and followed by new MSC. At this stage, everything is on track to have new TRC and new MSC open for business from the beginning of 2014 as separate Councils. If you would like to know more and want to follow the progress of the de-amalgamation in more detail, information is available on the

Tablelands Regional Council website. Just look for the de-amalgamation tab. • The recent distribution of recycling bins in the former Atherton Shire area now puts it on the same footing as the former Herberton and Eacham Shires. Instructions for their use are on the lids. Also, please continue to put any glass in the recycling bins as this is a great help in handling the waste at our transfer stations. • Many of you will know Tommy Prior from Chillagoe. The Chillagoe townsfolk put on a tribute weekend for Tom to celebrate his contribution and dedication to servicing Chillagoe and also the remote areas of Far North Queensland. Many thanks to Tom who truly is a local icon, also well known for his passion for Ford vehicles. • The Queensland Music Festival Flying Outback Tour in Mareeba was well attended recently and from all accounts was a great hit.

FabulousThink Fabulous, Feel Fabulous, Be Fabulous! Benefits of Massage for Children and Adolescents Massage is a form of touch therapy that has been utilized for centuries by all ages. According to the Australian Association of Massage Therapists (AAMT) massage is the ‘hands on’ practice of influencing muscles and soft tissue of the body to improve health and wellbeing. Children and adolescents experience stress just like adults do. While it’s not the same as running a business or paying off a car, childhood stressors can take their toll on your child’s energy levels. Stressors include: • Exams and school pressure • Social Issues • Family quarrels such as divorce • Lose and grief Regular massage therapy can act as a stress buster for children and adolescences. Imbalances in the muscular system can affect sleep patterns, which in turn affects mood & behaviour. Other benefits of massage for young children include: • Assist with growing pains • Over exertion and sports injuries • Postural imbalances • Headaches • Depression and anxiety We invite you to come and see us at Care Chiropractic Queensland for a complementary consultation to determine if massage is right for your child and what they can expect.

The conscious lifestyler Yellow Eagle the art of movement and Conscious Eating invite you to a full-day workshop to experience the activation of this energy, creating movement into the physical and eating consciously. Would you like to find the truth in how you and your body are designed? It is time to step into the ‘energetic reality’ with your body through movement and eating. It is logical and easy to create a new way of seeing our body as energy through movement and eating using the body’s sensors. Is it possible to access more awareness with ‘energies’ with ‘knowing’ your body’s design through movement? Is it possible that food actually supports an can alter your consciousness? Joshua is now combining two systems, The Art of Movement and Conscious Eating. Have you ever experienced someone who nurtures and knows how your body works and gifts you access to your truth’s?

This will be a fun day into seeing You and Your body in a whole new light. Never been done before you get how your body moves and takes in foods and drinks. Joshua has lived and uncovered the truths of how the ‘energetics’ can be fully embodied into movement and interpreting what your body is choosing. He will give you some tools that you can use at your leisure for movements and exercises, rather than abuse your body when exercising. The tools and principles for movement also apply to food and diet. This full day will reveal false ideas and embrace all of you into what you desire. Would you be open to the possibility that even the most intense exercises are still expansive and light on your body and give you a true foundation to grow? Would you be open to the possibility of no more diets and instead use tools that you can access for a healthy and vibrant body? What if it only takes you and your awareness? A full-day workshop is now available to experience the activation of this energy, creating movement into the physical and eating consciously. The key to the day is to know and perceive the principles or tools that are given, so that you remain your own guru and you don’t have to follow someone else. Commonly we diminish ourselves by believing we need to follow others. Here, you get the tools to expand yourself continuously. The day will include movements and ‘exercises’, then tasting and tantalizing your sensors over lunch, followed by discussion and connecting with the foods through your sensors. Imagine someone actually sharing a conscious experience while you experience it with your sensors? When: Sunday 11 August 2013 Where: Pachamama House, 30 Barron Falls Road, Kuranda. T

ableland beef producers will have the opportunity to attend a Beef Producers’ field day to be held on August 4 at Malanda State High School’s new Agriculture Trade Training Centre. The field day has been organised by the Malanda Beef Plan Group to showcase the school’s new agricultural facilities and will run from 9am until 3pm. Landmark have organised Todd Donaldson to give a speech

about Hormonal Growth Promotants and Scott Adams on reproductive diseases and vaccines. There will also be a speech from AgForce director Alex Stubbs as well as a series of practical demonstrations. Malanda Beef Plan Group representative Bruce Carcary said the field day is being held as a ‘follow up’ due to the strong interest and support shown from producers over the past couple of years.

“The field day will highlight the new Trade Training Centre for Agriculture at the school and the great work that is being done with students - both for those ‘off the land’ and those who are not but are still keenly interested in pursuing a career in agriculture,” he said. Reservations for the Field Day are essential and can be made by calling Glenyse on 4095 2280 or Elizabeth on 4097 2293.

Dare to be different This 40, very special acres is here for you to purchase if you dare to be different. A pole home that has it's poles in not exactly the vertical position one would expect them to be. “I personally haven't come across one like it. The home features three bedrooms plus an open plan living dining/kitchen, bathroom and wrap around two sides verandah upstairs. The laundry, second bathroom and a double carport are downstairs. This home is only few years old and totally build out of timber. There is a double bay size shed and tobacco curing barns next to it which could be converted that into some other uses. Various fruit trees, a substantial veggie garden and quite a few timber trees were planted some time ago. The property has Barron River boundary on one end and Bilwon Road on the other. A seasonal creek also runs through part of the property with a great swimming hole for the summer months. Some equipment comes with the sale like a tractor, slasher, mister/blower, ride on mover, irrigation and more. Having a river boundary allows you to water your stock but if you intend to grow crops then there is a water allocation that can be purchased separately. Inspect today! Speedway after dark

Roosters crowing after watershed win By Ryan Groube

Sidecar bike teams Carl Davis and Les Tighe, Cal and Hayden Campbell and Wes Jenkins and Luke Parsons on the starting line at Mareeba Speedway on Saturday night

By Boyd Robertson Cold, wet weather was no deterrent when the Far North Queensland Speedway Moto Challenge kicked off for the first time at Mareeba Speedway on July 27. The Challenge featured about 60 riders, from as far away as Gympie, competing in a night of hectic racing on stockbikes, quads, sidecar bikes and solo bikes. Wes Jensen and Luke Parsons won the sidecar category time of 55.75 seconds, while Josh Coyne took out first for the stock bikes category and Brad Kilmore won the quadbike category. The Challenge, held for the past two years by the Far North Queensland Speedway Riders at Cairns Speedway, was shifted onto the Tableland for the first time this year. Club secretary and Clerk of Course Peter Valmaldre told The Express the move was due to Mareeba Speedway’s superior surface. “Mareeba Speedway is using decomposed granite, which is brilliant because it has much better drainage in the wetter weather,” he said. “It’s also got a hard base and a loose top, which means the bikes can get in a good slide on it - Cairns Speedway is topped with clay, which doesn’t drain and goes rockhard, and is no good for drifting bikes at all.

“Everyone loves to come to ride here, they’re more than willing to make the drive and it’s because of the surface.” Mr Valmadre said the club had been working for “about two weeks” to prepare Mareeba Speedway for the event, thanking Wallace’s Quarries for help with the speedway’s surface. Sidecar bikes are ridden by teams of two, with the passenger in the rear leaning heavily into the turns, often with their heads only a few centimetres clear of the ground whipping past beneath them. By shifting their weight, they allow the bike to perform longer and more efficient slides, giving them the edge over other riders. Jenna McDonald, 19, from Cairns, rides as a passenger for driver Jamie Miano, said despite the danger she wasn’t worried. “I do it for the thrill of it,” she said. “There’s really nothing else like it. “It’s my first season doing this – I kept saying I was going to give it a go and now everyone’s forced me to make good on what I was saying.” Mr Valmadre said Mareeba Speedway would host the major Barrier Reef Sidecar Classic on September 26, reviving the race after its heyday in the 1970s and 1980s.

the Atherton Roosters will head into this weekend’s local derby against the Mareeba Gladiators with a spring in their step after breaking through for their first win of the season on July 27. In dreary conditions at NQ Hardware Stadium, the Roosters belted the undermanned Mossman/Port Douglas Sharks 56-16. The Sharks were left without a bench after just 10 minutes when fullback Wade Noble was forced off the field after landing awkwardly in a Roosters tackle. After an early try to both sides, Victa Akiba broke through the middle of the ruck before landing a big don’t argue on the Sharks fullback to score under the posts. A 90 metre try from Craig Gregory put the Roosters ahead 16-4 moments before half time but a late Sharks try kept them in the game. In the second half, the Sharks tired as the Roosters scored at will. Interchange forward Michael Davis was a standout for the Roosters. The Manchester lad, who works as a humper at Howe Farms, carried defenders as easily as he does bananas, in a dominant display. Second rower Colt Tairua scored a double for the Roosters in the 10 try to three romp but the talking point post-match was a try the Roosters didn’t score.

Hardworking forward Steven Crear had an unobstructed path to the tryline for what would have been a rare four pointer. Instead, he inexplicably passed the pill to his outside men who fumbled the ball and butchered the simplest of tries. Post game, Roosters captain/ coach Curtis Nehow said it was nice to finally get a win. “We did it the hard way out here in the wet tonight but it is always good to have a win,” he said. “It is good for the boys to get some reward. It has been a long season and we’ll enjoy this. “It gives us a bit of confidence for what is always a pretty important game against Mareeba next [this] week. Tryscorers for the Roosters were; Craig Gregory, Waylon Joseph, Bert Whap, Nathan Curcio, Victa Akiba, Ted Whap, Mike Hauraki, Colt Tairua and Trent Molloy. In the Reserves, the Roosters fell 40-30 in a thriller. The Roosters had scored the last three tries of the match to draw within six in the final minutes. Desperate Sharks defence and a late try were just enough to secure the points for the visitors. There was no Under 18s game. The win moves the Roosters to eight competition points, just two behind Mossman/Port Douglas in the battle for the wooden spoon.

‘Gators streak ends By Ryan Groube

The attacking flair of the Yarrabah Seahawks proved too much for the Mareeba Gladiators on Sunday. Charging towards the finals with six wins from their past seven games, the Seahawks ran in 10 tries to five to record a 50-28 victory. The loss ends a three game winning streak for the ‘Gators who are still well positioned to make the Cairns and District Rugby League finals. Jack Pedersen was the best for the ‘Gators scoring three tries.

The ‘Gators reserves continued their stellar season with a thumping 5210 victory while the Malanda-Mareeba C Grade also took the chocolates running out 38-10 winners. Yarrabah’s Under 18s belted Mareeba 72-10. On Saturday, the ‘Gators host the Atherton Roosters at Davies Park. Their final two rounds are against the Tully Tigers and the second to bottom Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks. Winning two of their last three matches should be enough for the ‘Gators to play finals.

Tableland Cup up for grabs in derby Roosters in Atherton 44-22. To wrest back the cup, the Roosters will have to beat the ‘Gators by at least 23 points. Despite the challenge, the Roosters will enter the match high on confidence having dispatched the Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks 56-16 in their last start. Roosters captain-coach Curtis Nehow said all the pressure for the game would be on the ‘Gators. “They need the win to keep looking towards playing finals. For us, it is all about building towards next year,” he said.

By Ryan Groube The fierce rugby league rivalry between Mareeba and Atherton will reconvene on Saturday as the Tableland Cup goes on the line. The Mareeba Gladiators go into the derby as unbackable favourites to retain the prestigious cup. Playing at their Davies Park fortress, in front of what is expected to be a bumper home crowd, the ‘Gators are in form and have a big head start. When the two sides met in the opening derby of the year back in round nine, the ‘Gators flogged the

“Playing Mareeba in Mareeba is always a hard game but we have a bit of confidence now and I know our boys will be up for it. “They’ve got big fellas right through their side so we are going to have to be patient and prepared to grind it out with them.” In the context of the season, the match holds enormous significance for the ‘Gators. A win will go a long way in ensuring they ‘Gators hold a logjam of teams nipping at their heels for a finals berth at bay. Mareeba Gladiators assistant

coach Todd Rowe said as important as the Tableland Cup was the two points for a win was more important. “It would be great for the club if we keep hold of the Tableland Cup but at the moment getting the win and the two points is all we are worrying about,” he told The Express at a ‘Gators training session. “We find ourselves in a very good position to be playing finals this year and we don’t want to put any pressure on ourselves by losing to Atherton. “I’ve had some involvement with Atherton and I know all their players lift for this game. It means a lot

to them and I know they’ll put up a good fight.” Gates to the local derby open at 3pm. Under 18s kick off proceedings at 4pm, followed by Reserves at 5.30pm. Kick off for the main game is at 7pm. Preliminary team lists provided by both clubs have been used to create the graphic below and were correct as of print deadline. A series of injuries during last round has seen some of those positions change.

Bulls control premiership destiny By Ryan Groube

The Mareeba Bulls have one hand on the Far North Queensland Football Competition’s premiership cup after defeating reining premiers Marlin Coast 2-0 on Saturday night. The win sees Mareeba leapfrog Marlin Coast on the competition ladder and if the Bulls can win their remaining four games they will be the 2013 champions. Robert Pendenza and Steven Cater were the goal scorers for the Bulls. Bulls coach Alex Srhoj said the team weren’t premiers yet and had a job to do in the final four rounds. “We haven’t won anything yet but the good thing is that our destiny is in our own hands and we know we can do it,” he said. “We still have to go to Douglas and we still have to go to Stratford

which will be hard work but I know the boys are up for it.” The Bulls and the Rangers have easily been the two best teams in the competition in 2013. In round six, the Rangers beat the Bulls 3-1 at their home ground. The Bulls record after 15 rounds stands at 13 wins and a loss. The Rangers have 12 wins a loss and a draw and find themselves two points behind the Bulls. Both teams have a catch up game with the Bulls to travel to Douglas and Edge Hill to host the Rangers. Vanquished Rangers coach Paul Fitzgerald said his team simply didn’t perform on the back of a tough away game against Douglas the week prior. “The better team won,” he said. “We didn’t perform. Mareeba were the stronger side and they deserved to win.

“We had a bruising game against Douglas last week and physically we had a few of our boys struggle to recover.” In the final four rounds, the Bulls play Innisfail United (ninth) at home, Stratford Dolphins (fouth) away and FNQ FC (seventh) at Borzi Park. The catch-up game against third placed Douglas United will be held on August 9 at 8.15pm. In other results from the weekend, the Bulls Reserves let slip a lead to draw 2-2 with Marlin Coast while the Lady Bulls went down 6-2. In the second division competition, a committed Dimbulah/Mareeba Barras comfortably accounted for a lacklustre Atherton side 4-1. Damien Wildman scored a hat trick for the Barras. The Atherton Eagles host the Leichhardt Lions on Friday.
