Cook Shire gets new Chief Exec FAR North Queensland local Linda Cardew has been earmarked to step into the top job as Chief Executive OfďŹ cer of Cook Shire Council. Ms Cardew, who was chosen with unanimous approval by Cook Shire’s seven Councillors at a special meeting earlier this month, has more than 25 years experience in local, state and federal government, including most recently as chief executive of Douglas Shire Council. “I’m very committed to local government and I love working with communities and a strong Council team to deliver outcomes,â€? Ms Cardew said. “I’m very excited about the vastness and diversity of the Cook Shire, and some of the major projects Council is involved in are very aligned with my previous experience.â€? Cook Shire Mayor Peter Scott said the Council had been impressed with Ms Cardew’s experience and qualiďŹ cations. “We are really looking forward to working with Linda to take our organisa-

Lack of information regarding council rates investigation By Rebecca Wallis
TENSIONS are further building between Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and ratepayers after repeated requests for details of an investigation into the latest rates error has been ignored. Concerned residents have asked the Mayor and CEO of TRC for the name
of the “external audit committee” that will be undertaking a review of the rating model used for the 2017/18 rates notices, as well as further details including a timeline, but that information has not been forthcoming. Instead the Mayor and councillors have individually stated that they will not comment further until the investigation has been con-
cluded, a statement some claim is contradictory to comments already made by the Mayor in recent statements and interviews. “The Mayor has used the media to persuade the public that the errors are minimal and inconsequential,” said Sandra Curcio who was part of the group that confronted the council about the errors last October and again in February.
“He has willingly provided all sorts of information except what should have been made public – the details and parameters of the review. “He has already compromised the integrity of the review by repeatedly pre-empting the outcome with his statements.” Together with ratepayers Steve Raso and Ed Kochi, Ms Curcio was able
to bring to the council’s attention that an error had been made with the rating model for this year. Although the review is welcome, Ms Curcio said more information needs to be provided about the investigative body. The Mayor declined to give The Express any details of the investigation when approached last week.
Protestors apologise for offensive signs INDIVIDUALS responsible for protest signs that were deemed to be offensive and racist towards the CEO of Tablelands Regional Council have apologised saying their intentions were misinterpreted. Hurriyet Babacan was the target of one of the protest signs displayed on tractors outside of council offices on Mabel Street on February 22. One read ‘This is not communist turkey’ and told the CEO to ‘go home’.Protestors were members of the ‘Ratepayer Action Group’ and were trying to display their frustration at council over a number of issues. Acting secretary of the group Lyn O’Connor said frustrations had reached boiling point, but the sign was not racially motivated. “(The signs were) misinterpreted or misrepresented as a threat and a
reference to a goose has been assumed to be racial slur on the CEO when it has been confirmed that was not the sign writers intent at all,” she said.“It is a reminder for all, that words and actions need to be chosen wisely.” Ms O’Connor said members of the community felt they were not being listened to by the council, which lead to the protest. “When people do not believe they have been listened to, treated with ignorance and asked to wait for many months without being kept informed of progress, it is not difficult to understand that individuals will become agitated and impatient,” she said. “We hope that council will amend their position and meet with the RAG so that we might be able to start to de-escalate the situation and rebuild communication and trust.”
Historical researcher Elwyn Troughton examines the damage done by vandals to the military guns at Anzac Park, Mareeba. INSET: The cenotaph was defaced.
Vandals trash war memorial By Rebecca Wallis
A MAREEBA memorial erected to honour soldiers who took part in combat has been defaced and damaged yet again by vandals. Local historical researcher Elwyn Troughton was devastated to discover last week that the Cenotaph at Anzac Park on Byrnes Street had been tampered with and that one of the wheels on the guns that sit behind it had been slashed.
“They’ve ruined it again with graffiti, it’s so disappointing,” said Mrs Troughton. Mrs Troughton said this attack was just the latest in a long line of vandalism on the memorial that honours local men that took part in World War I, World War II and the Vietnam War. “I always go and inspect it and multiple times a year it has been defaced,” she said. “It’s incredibly disrespectful to the families of
these men.” It was the irreparable tyre damage that really upset Mrs Troughton who discovered it would be impossible to get a replacement. But the generous community spirit of one local business owner has helped to put the smile back on Mrs Troughton’s face and will retain the history of the region. John Raso from Mareeba Tyrepower has offered to replace both tyres on the damaged gun at no cost.
As the original military tyres are unable to be sourced, the tyres will be different to what is currently there now, but Mrs Troughton said that as long as the gun could remain in good condition, it didn’t matter. “This is such wonderful news,” she said. “It’s so important that historical artefacts like this are maintained.” The cenotaph was built through the fundraising work of the Soldier’s Me-

morial Committee, and constructed by Melrose and Fenwick. It was unveiled on Anzac Day in 1923. It has been moved a number of times around the town and in 2001 two military guns called 105mm L5 Pack Howitzer’s were added to the display by the President of the Mareeba RSL Sub Branch, Roy Blakeney and members. They were unveiled on Long Tan Day August 18, 2001.

Petford Wellness Association member Sam Darcy hands the petition to Member for Hill Shane Knuth which he intends to take to Parliament.
Tablelands youth rehab program gets support NEARLY 100 residents fed up with spiralling juvenile crime, unanimously passed a resolution at a meeting in Cairns on Saturday asking the State Government to immediately implement the renowned Petford Farm Rehabilitation Program. Supporting resolution were Member for Kennedy Bob Katter, Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch and State Member for Hill Shane Knuth. The former Member for Mulgrave Naomi Wilson was present and also backed the strategy. Long-time Petford supporter Professor Ernest
Hunter, formerly Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service and Adjunct Professor at James Cook University, explained how the Petford Program had been so successful. “One can’t work without the other and Geoff Guest incorporated a strict health and diet regime with a remote location and did not rely on any pharmaceutical drugs or more conventional methods of rehabilitation,” Professor Hunter said. Member for Kennedy Bob Katter told the meeting how he had sought advice
from different Aboriginal groups when formulating his Relocation Sentencing policy which allows Magistrates to sentence young offenders to a remote rehabilitation facility instead of going to jail. “What happens is amateur criminals go to detention or jail and come out as professionals,” Mr Katter said. “Jail for young offenders is not the answer.” Association members said they had been asked by Innisfail and Townsville residents to stage meetings because of the high crime rates in their communities.

Mareeba student wins zone final SIX Tablelands Lions clubs were represented at the Zone Finals of the Lions Youth of the Year competition in Mareeba on Saturday night. Seven students representing three high schools from the region includ-
ing St Stephens College, Malanda Sate High and Ravenshoe State High entertained family, friends and Lions members at the Mareeba RSL. The quality of the students was so high that judges found it difficult finding
a winner and therefore made a split decision by offering Mikayla Scanlon, School Captain of Malanda Sate High and representing the Yungaburra Lions Club the Public speaking award. The overall winner of the competition was David
Bin of Dimbulah; College Captain of St Stephen’s representing the Mareeba Lions Club. David will now represent the zone in the district final which will be held in Townsville on Saturday March 24.

A MAREEBA man has been invited to attend a memorial service in Hong Kong later this month for his hero brother. Joseph Hughes was a 19-year-old member of the Royal Army Service Corps (RASC) when he was driving a truck full of ammunition that caught fire during a clean up after the war had ended in 1946. Knowing the truck would blow up and kill dozens of men, he made the brave decision to drive it away from the camp where he inevitably got caught in the explosion, dying from his injuries two days later. He was awarded the George Cross for his actions, the second highest award of the United Kingdom honours system. It is awarded for gallantry ‘not in the face of the enemy’ to both members of the British armed forces and to British civilians. His brother James, 93, emigrated to Australia

Mareeba break-in an ‘utter disgrace’ MY name is Denis John McKinley and I have lived most of my life in the community of Mareeba - I have held positions within Government having been with Queensland Fire and Rescue for some 42 years the last 14 years as Inspector of the Cape having managed both permanent and auxiliary stations from Thursday Island to Ravenshoe. My family reside at No 2 Constance Street - Mareeba on the corner of Constance and Lloyd Streets right near the Mareeba District Hospital - Queensland Ambulance Service and Government Mental Health Services. On Saturday morning 3rd March 2018 at approximately 5am my wife was awakened by a loud scraping noise and proceeded to the front of our house and saw a utility being jump started by individuals - my wife having investigated further has opened our indoor carport personal door and found our internal house carport roller door fully open and my sons
Toyota Hilux Utilty missing – having woken my son and told him that his utility has been stolen my son has taken off in pursuit of the thieves who have driven off towards the Mareeba District Hospital. My wife awoke me – I went and investigated and saw my personal door on my large shed in the backyard open and the lights on in the shed – I did a visual of the shed and found my sons $9000 KTM motor bike had been taken also – many people know that I have a 1.5 metre spear ended securuity fence all around my property but these individuals have obviously been looking at our property and made their move – I have to report they are of Aboriginal and Islander descent and are still in their teens. My family and I are full of praise and fully supportive of our Queensland Police Service Staff for the prompt attention we received from QPS staff all through Saturday and today Sunday to locate our sons KTM motorbike and his Toyota Hilux Utility at Yarrabah – however the QPS are restricted by law to follow stolen vehicles until

they stop – having placed an immediate notice on Facebook my sons Hilux Utilty went on a joy ride with three young teenagers unlicensed throughout the Tablelands stealing petroleum from a number of outlets right through to Puma Fuel outlet at Woree Cairns before moving onto Yarrabah and stopping the vehicle which was all recorded on Facebook. It is here my sons vehicle was located and is now in the hands of the forensic unit of QPS for several days – I am aware that these same individuals stole another two vehicles out of Cairns last night and returned to Mareeba. This is an utter disgrace of our laws and basic discipline to these individuals including their so called parentst is time for our community to stand up and say enough is enough and penalise both the parents and the individuals by making them serve pentence in front of community – magistrates and judges have had a gut full along with society it is time to get tough and instill in our society respect for all – it is time to lobby our local members – regardless
of your ethnic background these are the laws we live by and if you step over that line there are serious consequences. Political correctness has just taken over with disregard for law and order – just remember these individuals were in my home breaking and entering whilst my family was asleep – this is totally unacceptable and needs to be reported in the print media and other media outlets for the contempt it has brought to my family and no doubt many others of recent Denis McKinley Mareeba

We need answers The new thinker in council on rates ‘blunder’ DIVISION 6 now has a THE first question I want answered is how do we know we have not been overcharged in this monumental blunder. If so are ratepayers going to be reimbursed for this. After this how can we trust the costing for the massive water rate rises or any other increases we had inflicted upon us is correct. chance to get new young blood into politics. Joshua Wallace is standing for the division 6 vacancy, he’s young and energetic, will keep an eye on the ball with issues as he lives and runs a business within the division 6 boarders. After due diligence on other candidates Joshua Wallace will be the new thinker in council, fresh up to date approaches and be for the constitutes, taking our needs to the TRC and be a voice to be heard. Division 6 is a strong farming community, with an ever growing residential population, we need a stronger voice to bring in new business to our ever growing community with more incentives within the agricultural area this young entrepreneur may well be our answer.
Time for Division 6 to stand up and get our issues heard, we should be thankful we have such a young able bodied candidate willing to take on a thankless job and for this he deserves our full support. Mary Smith Tolga
Why no report on Atherton fire? SO who was expecting the community aware Tablelander newspaper to report on this devastating fire that destroyed virtually all the occupants’ possessions? Everyone in Atherton, I would expect. Well I can imagine the shock of not a mention of it in this week’s rag. I would have expected something better than that from a newspaper that purports to promote goodwill within our community. As someone who has been to see the occupants, the scene of the devastation and the immediate help being given, I am saddened the newspaper couldn’t be bothered to give it a mention and try to promote various methods of help/donations for the occupants: Pretty pathetic. Simon Klein Atherton
Darryl Drury for Division 6 THIS is no reflection on the calibre of the candidates standing for the recently vacated Division 6 of the TRC, as no doubt they are
all keen to fill the roll of councillor and work for that division. One candidate however who I believe will do an outstanding job, is Darryl Drury who resides in Division 6. Darryl stood for Division 6 in the last local government election but was unsuccessful. His interest in the division never waned however and since I have been part of the Rate Payers Action Group, he has constantly approached me to ask how our endeavours to meet with council has been going. The rates issue (Category F & G and others) in particular, has been first and foremost in Darryl’s mind. He has also expressed great concern for the unabated lopping of the beautiful trees that are a key attraction in Atherton and surrounding towns. As a member of the Tolga school safety committee, the ongoing saga of the parking and safety issue at the Tolga school is another cause where Darryl has been heavily involved in to get a positive result for all. Darryl in his working life to date has a wealth of experience in mining, small business and shown a keen interest in the vital rural industries of the Tablelands. I have no doubt that his determination to get things done for Division 6 and the entire TRC region, will be of benefit to all it’s constituents. Jerry Micola Tolga

New avenue for workers THE prospect of being able to hire a reliable seasonal workforce drew strong crowds to a Seasonal Worker Programme (SWP) information session in Mareeba on Monday night. International delegates from Solomon Islands, Timor-Leste, Fiji and Papua New Guinea plugged the value of their workers to more than 30 growers. Growers also heard from representatives of the Labour Mobility Assistance Program, the Department of Jobs and Small Business, Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers, the Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network and Workplace Health and Safety Queensland. The common thread was reliability, strong work ethic and a genuine desire to work – qualities all growers seek in their staff. The international delegates represented four of the 10 participating countries in the Federal Government-funded SWP. In 2016/17, Australian employers hired 477 workers from Timor-Leste, 190 from Fiji, 139 from Papua New Guinea and just 87 from Solomon Islands compared with 2690 from Tonga and 2150 from Va-
nuatu. Queensland Agriculture Workforce Network Far North Queensland Manager Leanne Kruss said there was positive interest in the SWP locally. “We don’t just see seasonal workers as lowskilled workers – they’re an important part of workforce solutions here,” she said. “The contribution these countries can make to supporting agriculture in Far North Queensland is significant, and we welcome them.” Solomon Islands Director of Trade George Tuti told growers his country was in a solid position to help. “By Pacific standards, we’ve got a large population so we are more than happy to supply a good number of workers where there are shortages in the agriculture sector,” he said. “We’ve got more than 600,000 people, 80 per cent living in rural areas. Subsistence farming is just a way of life so our workers have useful experience for working on Queensland farms.” On tours of Piñata Farms and Skybury Coffee at Paddy’s Green, the delegation heard growers’ positive experiences of the

people who genuinely want to work, and if they show that, it’s a great start. A big incentive for us is if they come over here and work well, they can come back every year because we want that consistency.” SWP information ses-

Lorraine Lynch with the colon hydrotherapy machine she purchased from Canada.
Boosting gut health with modern technology By Rebecca Wallis
A STATE-of-the-art machine brought over from Canada is providing optimal health to Tablelanders for the first time. Lorraine Lynch from the Wholistic Wellness Centre in Mareeba is the only person on the Tablelands offering colon hydrotherapy – a procedure that she says is steadily gaining in popularity. “It’s a fantastic way to
boost your health, particularly because of the nature of your colon, bits and pieces would get caught in little pockets here and there and that’s what causes the issues that people are having,” said Lorraine. “The putrefying matter becomes really old and dark and it becomes auto— intoxicating. The colon is like the second brain. It has acupressure points all the way around the colon that relate to different parts of the body. If you

have different matter that is blocked in one of the pockets, it will relate to different parts of the body so it can be like bladder issues, prostrate issues, kidney, the whole gamut because it’s all connected.” Historically, colon hydrotherapy was something reserved only for the rich and famous, but with the advancement of modern technology and the increase in awareness of health issues, it is quickly becoming something many
more people are choosing to do. Lorraine sourced the machine from Canada to offer her clients the best treatment after finding the therapy improved her own health issues. “It’s so exciting,” she said. “I’m so passionate about it because it’s helped me so much. There are a lot of people who know about it and they know how great it is. They feel lighter and cleansed and more energetic afterwards.”

Growers relieved as Tinaroo dam level rises By Rebecca Wallis
THE wet season has finally arrived on the Tablelands, leaving the region’s growers feeling less nervous about irrigation for the year ahead. Massive rainfall totals last week caused some chaos through the towns as rivers flooded closing roads and bridges, but the general feeling was one of relief as the dams and rivers started to fill. Topaz near Millaa Millaa recorded over 900mm of rain through the week, one of the highest recordings in the North Tropical Coast catchment. Ravenshoe received over 600mm of rain throughout the week, Atherton 360mm, Herberton 199mm, Mt Garnet 244mm, Kuranda 410mm and Mareeba 178mm. Tinaroo’s storage levels jumped from 48 per cent to 69.96 per cent by Monday, March 12, leaving growers hopeful that their water allocations would reach 100 per cent by July 1. “We’re always optimistic that the dam will fill,”
said Mareeba-Dimbulah irrigation scheme chairman Joe Moro. “Growers were a bit nervous up until last week. They’ve seen a few dry years, so this latest lot of rain will make them less nervous.” Mr Moro said that if the dam gets to 75 per cent capacity, the growers will get their 100 per cent announced allocations, but that it will also mean more water will be released for environmental purposes. “We are opposed to large releases from the dam during times of drought, but it is a requirement under the resource plan,” said Mr Moro. “Let’s hope that we get enough rain that it doesn’t matter.” Meanwhile the rest of the region struggled throughout the week with widespread flooding affecting the roads and water supply for many locals. A boil water notice was issued for those connected to the Millaa Millaa water supply scheme and on Thursday night a pipe was damaged at the river crossing near North Millstream.
Member for Hill Shane Knuth paid a visit to Tinaroo over the weekend, excited about the levels finally rising. As of Monday (print deadline) the dam was sitting at almost 70 per cent.
Tablelands Regional Council crews reportedly worked through the night to fix it and asked locals to cut their water consumption by 50 per cent until it was repaired. The Millaa Millaa water intake at the treatment plant
was also partially blocked and crews couldn’t work on it until the Beatrice River dropped to safe levels. Over in Mareeba the council asked residents not connected to town water to be careful with their water consumption.
Mayor Tom Gilmore said residents who source their water from a creek, dam, bore or other sources other than the town’s water network should frequently check the water quality for possible contamination. “Following recent rain,
you can’t be sure what may have been washed downstream and ended up in your water supply,” Cr Gilmore said. “It is also important to ensure the water available to your pets or livestock is regulated and safe to con-
sume.” School students in Biboohra were sent home early on Friday, as were other students and workers across the Tablelands as there were concerns with them making it safely as rivers continued to rise.

June 2018 – Save the date for Mareeba Lions Metrogaine
THE 2018 Mareeba Lions Metrogaine will be held on June 17 at Arnold Park, Mareeba in aid of the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation. Almost $20,000 has been raised so far for the Australian Lions Childhood Cancer Research Foundation by the Metrogaine and other events. “We are proud of the Metrogaine as an event that gets people out of the house for a bit of exercise and also teaches them a lot about the town by completing the Metrogaine course and solving the riddle clues,” said Tom Braes from Mareeba Lions. Lions Biggest BBQ is an annual fundraising event undertaken by many of the 1,300 Clubs across the country. Funds raised will be used to help achieve ALCCRF’s mission to prevent kids with cancer dying by raising funds nationally and donating these funds to the best scientific and clinical childhood cancer research conducted right across Australia. “It never ceases to amaze me what Aussies can do when they work to-
gether,” said Peter Lamb, Trustee of ALCCRF. Who would have thought the good old Aussie Barbie could have been used to help Lions raise over $10 million for childhood cancer research. More than 800 Australian kids are diagnosed every year with various forms of childhood cancer and unfortunately we are still seeing kids dying every week. Many of the 1,300 Lions Australia clubs will hold barbecues during the year to raise funds for medical research into the causes and prevention of, and to find a cure for, childhood cancer. Lions have been passionately supporting childhood cancer research since 1996 “We believe every child deserves the chance at a healthy life.” In 2017 Mareeba Lions were able to donate $5,000.00 to the ALCCRF being money raised through the Metrogaine. This brings the amount raised by the Metrogaine and donated to ALCCRF to close to $20,000.00.

Mackay, Myrteza showdown ends in Bulls over Barras By Liam Daly
JEREMY Mackay announced his return to the Mareeba Basketball Association, leading the Bulls to a 99-71 scoreline in a shootout-victory over the Barras on Thursday night. In a match that saw 28 triples fall, the Bulls prevailed on the back of the performance of Mackay, who led all scorers with 38 points, including six threepoint makes, in his comeback match. Prodigious Barras’ talent Zayd Myrteza set the pace early, knocking down his side’s first 11 on his way to 31 points with nine three pointers for the night. Myrteza’s early fourfrom-four barrage only served as contagion for the Bulls’ marksmen, with stalwarts Ricaydon Wason and
Jerome Gully joining Mackay in catching fire soon after. While Mackay stole the show and Myrteza solidified his title as the Mareeba’s best junior prospect, the big men for both sides laid the platform for their guards to shine. Dereck Garner and Tommy Harvey were strong inside, boxing out staunchly for the Barras, while Giuseppe Aloia and David McGrath held strong for the Bulls. In his second outing for the season, versatile Barras recruit Tyson Tatti again proved his calibre, collecting a team-high 35 points, all while orchestrating the defence against an array of former teammates. Myrteza’s merciless first-quarter efforts were enough to take the Barras to the first break in the

lead, but from that point the Bulls went into every change ahead, gradually asserting their dominance and reminding rivals why their core squad finished 2nd in the minor premiership in 2017. The victorious Bulls were aided by strong and active minutes from their high school bench. Shaun Stephens showed nous beyond his experience, distributing and hitting the shots that mattered. Creflo Morris was equally reliable when called upon. Meanwhile, in a grandfinal rematch, the Red Devils exacted revenge on the Stingrays, taking a 47-15 win, in a lower-scoring but higher-acumen show down. Club President and Stingrays stalwart Brendan Ebner was philosophical in defeat. “It was a close first
quarter until the Devils found some open perimeter shots,” he said “(The Devils) disposed of us in the middle quarters. But our young Rays line-up didn’t roll over in the fourth, and that shows character.” The Stingrays, champions in the 2017 summer season, continue to prove their resilience, as they battle to defend their title without the services of Jake Priestly, Dean Gallo and Declan Ebner, who have all crossed the court to the upstart all-school side, Highlanders. The Highlanders scored well over 100 points which is pretty impressive with a running clock. Earlier, The Brick Squad cruised to the top of the u18s ladder, comfortably accounting for The OGs in a 45-25 canter. Zayd Myrteza led all

scorers with 25, combining long-range precision and aerial ability when capitalising on outlet passes. David Boyle turned in his strongest performance
of the season, contributing on both ends of the court as the Brick Squad reached a new level of team cohesion. The Squad’s ball-movement and abundance of
scoring options was too much for The OGs, despite the best efforts of Dean Gallo and Zac Myrteza, and some soft-touch scoring from Wynter Brooks.

First Grade confident going into Grand Final By Rebecca Wallis
COACH Ken Shanahan is full of confidence taking Atherton’s first grade team into Cricket Far North’s Grand Final this weekend. It will be the second time in the past few years that the team have come face to face with Mulgrave in a Grand Final – the last time they were defeated,
not that Coach Shanahan is concerned that history will repeat itself this weekend. “They’re a really good team, he said. “They just needed to believe in themselves and they do now. “They’re performing very well at the moment. I don’t think anyone can touch us. Atherton have been on fire all season celebrating
their 30th anniversary year in style. This year they’ve already won the One Day and T20 titles and this weekend are going for the treble hoping to clinch the two day Grand Final that will run over two consecutive weekends at Fuller Park in Cairns. They’re the only country town team left in the
tournament. “I think Atherton has thrived because it has a very good junior base, said Shanahan. “It’s a strong side. It’s been over 10 years since the club last won a two day Grand Final so the team are hoping for strong side-line support for what is sure to be a nail-biting finish.
U14s in Grand Finals
JOHN COLE TOYOTA are proud to sponsor the Atherton First Grade Cricket Team The Under 14 Atherton side have also advanced to Grand Final this weekend.
THE Atherton U14 cricket side advanced to the Cricket Far North grand final after overcoming Rovers in a rain-affected match in Cairns at the weekend. They will now play United Blue in a two-day grand final this weekend.
We congratulate all of the players on a fantastic 2018 season! and wish you all the best for your Grand Final Match on Saturday

SEVENTEEN-year-old cricketer Chris Adams has been selected to represent Queensland in the Under-19 Open Schoolboys Team. The Mareeba State High School student plays for Atherton in their first grade team and is hoping to help them to victory this weekend in the two-day Grand Final. It’s not the first time that the opening batsman has played for the State, having previously been picked for the Under-12s team. He’s the only player from the far north chosen this year for the Under-19s team. “It’s a good team sport, said Chris, who has been playing since he was 10 years old. “It’s good being around the boys and it’s a fun game. Queensland will play NSW in the Under-19s comp and the team will get together in September for training before the national titles. It will be Chris’ final time playing for the State in schoolboys and after focusing on his plumbing apprenticeship at the end of Year 12 he says he might consider a career in the sport.

Bowls Club takes out top awards THE Mossman Memorial Bowls Club Inc last night took out five prestigious Keno & Clubs Queensland Awards for Excellence. Over 1000 guests from across the State attended the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre to see the Mossman Memorial Bowls Club Inc take home multiple awards, including: Best Bowls Club (Small); Best Community Services by a Licensed Club (Small); Best Social Club (Small); Best Club in a Rural Community, and; Best Club Far North Queensland. Located in the heart of a small regional community, Mossman Memorial Bowls Club prides itself on being a premier bowling facility. The club is committed to supporting and promoting the sport of bowls while offering affordable membership and great quality food in an enjoyable, friendly environment. Clubs Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Doug Flockhart, congratu-
lated the Mossman Memorial Bowls Club Inc on their multiple awards success. “This truly is one of the great small clubs in rural Queensland and it punches well above its weight in terms of helping Mossman and surrounding local communities, Mr Flockhart said. “They offer superior bowling and social facilities for their members and guests and are an integral part of the local community. While there is an overly simplistic view of clubs as just liquor and gaming venues, the Mossman Bowls Club is a great example of a hub for social interaction and community engagement. Mr Flockhart also thanked Mullins Lawyers, Club Training Australia, XXXX, Rydges and SG Gaming for sponsoring the respective awards. “Our generous sponsors help make the Keno & Clubs Queensland Awards a premier event.
