Dairy receives top gong PIONEERING spirit and an innovative approach has earned a Tablelands business top gong at the TNQ20 business excellence and tropical innovation awards. Mungalli Creek Dairy was recognised for their dedication winning the Business of the Year award and Environmental Sustainability Award. Marketing and PR Manager Michelle Bell-Turner said the awards were recognition of Mungalli Creek Dairy’s values. “We knew that we had a chance with the Environment Sustainability Award because everything about biodynamics is sustainable and we have been farming this way for more than 25 years,” she said. “The Business of the Year was a total surprise and we hadn’t even contemplated winning it. It is recognition of an enterprise that people obviously think is a great model and it shows how keen people are about knowing their food is produced in a sustainable and ethical manner.” Brothers Robert and Danny Watson Brothers took over the family farm, Mungalli Creek Dairy, in 1987. It was after Rob experienced adverse reactions to using farm chemicals that he started looking for a better way. He came across Biodynamics and being “young and enthusiastic” decided to give it a go. “In the early days, there was some flack about what they were doing, but now the community is very supportive,” Ms Bell-Turner said. “The local customers are extremely loyal and supportive of Mungalli and if it wasn’t for that base and their avid desire to seek out our products, we wouldn’t be where we are now.” Mungalli Creek Dairy was looking to reinvest their $10,000 prize money into improving the business through farming diversification and catering to niche markets. “Most likely we will focus on further developing new and innovative products and supply models,” Ms Bell-Turner said. “One of our overarching goals is to help revitalise our local town, whilst producing healthy products that we’d be happy to have on our table at home.”

Gabi Sturman receives her prize for her inspiring logo from Terrain’s Director for Catchment and Community Ken Keith.

Yungaburra artist Gabi Sturman depiction of the relationship between the environment and the community has won her $500 and will be the basis for Terrain Natural Resource Management Plan’s logo. “My design visually represents the interconnectedness of the rainforest, land, rivers and ocean, nestled within a pair of caring hands,” Ms Sturman said. “I believe that my design has included the vital elements that make up our Wet Tropics community, visually embodying the philosophy of ‘landscape stewardship’.” Terrain NRM CEO Carole Sweatman said Ms Sturman’s creative logo “clearly and simply illustrates the fundamentals of our lifestyles and livelihoods—land and water.” “Importantly, the role of people in looking after it is also depicted,” Ms Sweatman added. The logo competition was rolled out over recent months to promote the Wet Tropics’ Natural Resource Management Plan and en-

courage the community to embrace it as their own. “The plan is under review and will be a fresh new living web-based tool which seeks to connect the community with the Wet Tropics natural environment, and allow prioritization of land management projects in the future,” Ms Sweatman said. “The NRM Plan logo, based on Gabi’s design, will enable the community to easily identify with the new NRM Plan. “Terrain is the custodian of the Plan which is owned by the whole Wet Tropics community. We are seeking input and ownership from the broad community. The logo competition was one of the ways we have encouraged engagement.” Terrain is also offering a chance for a club or group in the region to win $500 by sharing what they value about the Wet Tropics’ environment. Coming together to help those in need Seeking shelter The Mareeba Community Service Expo will be held during Homeless Persons Week. Currently, there is no crisis housing available in Mareeba, but there are housing support services available. The Street to Home program has been operating in Mareeba since 2011. The program helps people, including rough sleepers (people who sleep on the streets) get into sustainable and secure housing. Mareeba Homeless Reference Group Chairperson Robert Larkin said another hidden aspect to homelessness is overcrowding, when multiple families live in the same house. The Street to Home program supports people to move into rental housing though education and advocacy. Since the Street to Home program started:

Mareeba Community Housing Company Patricia Goldfinch and Heather Dusting will be at the Mareeba Community Services Expo.

By Katherine Kokkonen COMMUNITY services are coming together under one roof to help those in need. The Mareeba Community Services Expo will bring together a range of services, including housing support, employment and childcare, allowing clients to see what services are available and to access a range of information in one day. Patricia Goldfinch from Mareeba Commu-

nity Housing Company said considerable time had passed since the last community services expo. She hoped the event would facilitate providers in linking together for the benefit of service seekers. “If we have someone who comes here and they are in a crisis where they need to be housed due to domestic violence we can refer them to the women’s centre or if they are homeless we can refer them to council and the

• 323 clients have accessed the program • 52% went through private housing • 87% remained housed • 76% were indigenous Street to Home service or we can give them a list of options if they wish to go to Cairns,” she said. Ms Goldfinch said the expo would also provide an opportunity to see if there are gaps in services and if there are funding opportunities to close those gaps. The Mareeba Community Services Expo will be held from 9am to 4pm, on Tuesday, August 5, at the Old Mazda and Mitsubishi Showroom on Byrnes St.

Pro active work by rural fire volunteers

Seven new fire recruits for Clohesy Group with mentors Back Row: L-R: Steve Cowlbeck, James Newman, Zananda Foord, Sonia Flux, Karen Cutler, Trevor Flux, Mark Schermer, Stephan Powiesnik, John Thomson. Front Row: Donna Cowlbeck, Steve DePrada, Mick Dub.

A pre-fire season hazard reduction burn will be carried out from July 25 to 27, by Volunteer fire fighters of the Clohesy Rural Fire Group – Davies Creek Rural Fire Brigade, Koah Rural Fire Brigade, Speewah Rural Fire Brigade and Kuranda Myola Rural Fire Brigade. “Operation Cool Burn”, weather permitting, will be seen from Kennedy Highway in the hills between Cardinia Estate and River Road. Adjacent land holders have been advised to install fire breaks around their properties and most have been more than co-operative, engaging machinery when required. Responsibility for fire protection rests with each property owner or the occupant of that prop-

erty within Queensland. In 2002, a huge wildfire roared through these hills for a week in November, the hottest part of the year, destroying flora and fauna. With this in mind and the accumulation of fuel since then, Volunteers are taking this opportunity in the cooler season to reduce the risk of another wild fire. New recruits will be assessed to complete accreditation for their latest Fire Management Course. Seasoned fire fighters will mentor and work alongside these members. Rural Fire Brigades are always looking for willing Volunteers to swell their ranks. Cairns Peninsula Area Office will be glad to advise you of your nearest Rural Brigade. The first phase of the Australian Army’s Exercise Hamel 2014 commenced in defence training areas and throughout North Queensland over the weekend. Exercise Hamel 2014 is designed to evaluate the 6th Combat Support Brigade and 3rd Combat Brigade capability and adaptability across a range of different tactical scenarios. Brigadier Mark Brewer, Director General – Training of the Australian Army’s Forces Command, said the exercise would draw on

Army units across the country and our Coalition partners. “The Army aims to learn from everything we do, so to provide the most realistic training scenario, some of Exercise Hamel will take place in local communities throughout the Atherton Tablelands,” he said. “We are extremely grateful to the people of North Queensland in supporting the Army and allowing us to exercise in this challenging training environment.”

Defence would like to advise residents around Townsville, Atherton Tablelands and surrounding areas that they are likely to see an increase in military vehicles and personnel during the exercise. Further information on Exercise Hamel 14, including vehicle and personnel movement, will be advised throughout the exercise. The Australian Army would like to thank local communities for their cooperation and patience during this training exercise.

Mareeba State High School students Carla Newlands, Adina Heggie, Caitlin Goodhew and Sam Harris view brain samples during their work experience at the Queensland Brain Institute.

Brainy students enjoy experience

Mareeba State High School students have excelled during a work experience stint at the Queensland Brain Institute (QBI). Earlier this month, four Year 11 students spent a week at QBI working in labs, performing experiments and analysing results. They also had the chance to go on lab tours in a range of areas QBI works in. The four students visiting QBI were all part of the Mareeba team who competed in the 2013 Brain Bee Challenge. The students made the Queensland final and finished third as a team. Mareeba State High School students have made every Queensland final of the Australian Brain Bee Challenge since first entering in 2008. The Brain Bee is a national neuroscience competition aimed at encouraging students to pursue a career in science. Student Caitlin Goodhew was already planning to study medicine, but her experience at QBI has her thinking about in-

cluding research in her future career. “My favourite thing about being at QBI is seeing that this type of work is actually happening in Australia,” she said. “Just having this experience means so much for our futures, we can really build on this.” The Queensland Brain Institute, at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, is home to 400 students and staff working on understanding brain biology to treat and prevent diseases and learn how behaviours occur. QBI is working on a number of diseases and disorders such as dementia, stroke, schizophrenia, autism and depression. Mareeba High School student Adina Heggie was impressed with the advances taking place at QBI. “With all the different diseases that they’re working on, we could be part of this if we go into science,” she said. “That we were able to see amazing advances in the making is really cool.”

Jennifer Walsh manager of the Mareeba Animal refuge accepts over $1000 in donations from Coles Mareeba and the wider community. She is pictured with Katrina Walbridge and Store manager Todd Riches. During the month of June, Coles Mareeba held a fund raiser for the Mareeba Animal Refuge. The result was simply astounding with an incredible amount of food collected which will keep hungry mouths happy for some time to come. “We wish to express our gratitude to the management and staff of Coles and to the wider Mareeba community for the amazing generosity displayed,” said manager of the Mareeba Animal Refuge Jennifer Walsh. “This community certainly is very forthcoming when the call is put out and it obviously thinks a great deal about its animals in need.”

Teaching methods spark heated debate

The class of 1994 will reunite in September to catch-up and reminisce about old schooldays.

Remembering days in the old schoolyard By Katherine Kokkonen THE class of 1994 will reunite to share their memories of high school, whether it was from carefree afternoons hanging with mates, hours in the classroom studying or counting down the days until graduation. Class of 1994 Alumnus Megan Palmer was looking forward to the 20-year reunion, on September 6 at the Mareeba Annuals, where approximately 100 students will come together. “I can’t wait to see what everyone is doing

with themselves and seeing what they are doing with their lives,” she said. The reunion will give students a chance to reminisce and also share how they have changed over the past two decades. Ms Palmer said the biggest change for her was having kids, although she joked that she probably hadn’t matured much over that time. Ms Palmer said she had a great time in high school and would do it all again, provided she had the same circle of friend with her. “There are so many fond memories. We had the best fun—we really went to school for catch-ups,” she said.

“Our little group has kept in contact and there are about ten of us who see each other really regularly over the past 20 years. “Mareeba High was a great high school. My favourite teacher is Mr Tracona and his theatre classes were the absolute best. Trevor Gordon (the principal) was very fair and approachable.” As part of preparations for the reunion, Ms Palmer is collecting memorabilia including yearbooks, old uniforms, senior shirts and pictures. If you have any memorabilia or would like more information, contact Megan Palmer on remlapem@gmail.com.

CHALK dust is flying when it comes to which method is best for educating students. Member for Cook David Kempton said Direct Instruction was not a panacea for Indigenous education in the Cape York region and should not be imposed on communities without extensive, prior, on-the-ground consultation. Mr Kempton’s comments came after the Federal Government awarded $22 million to the Good to Great Schools Australia organisation to help introduce and embed Direct and Explicit Instruction teaching methods in remote primary schools. Good to Great Schools Australia’s Founder and Chairman Noel Pearson said the organisation will support a small group of selected schools to develop great teachers to deliver effective instruction to every child. “There are no silver bullets for school reform, however international evidence shows there is a single keystone: effective instruction,” he said. “The Australian education system routinely fails children from low socioeconomic backgrounds, Indigenous children and those in remote communities. As a developed country, we should not willingly accept that a child’s background determines their educational success.” Mr Kempton said independent quantitative and qualitative assessment of Direct Instruction combined with extensive community engagement was required. He said claims of Direct Instruction’s success were not demonstrated in anecdotal evidence or in truancy levels. “We need to look at how education is being delivered, by whom, under what circumstances, and with what outcomes,” Mr Kempton said. “I meet regularly with community leaders in Cape York and I am not seeing much appetite for a one-size-fits-all approach to educational instruction as advocated by the Federal Government in its backing for Direct Instruction.”

Roll up and Roll in for Wheelbarrow Race DVD THE race may be over, but all the highlights will be on show at the premier of the Great Wheelbarrow Race DVD. Head to Ringers Rest, Fichera Road, Mareeba on Saturday, August 2, to catch the action on screen. The event starts at 6.30pm, with the screening of the DVD to take place from 7pm. Local charities and teams will be running barbeques on the night and there will be a cash bar with all proceeds going to charity. Organising Committee Chairman Councillor Nipper Brown said the three-day event, which took competitors from Mareeba to Chillagoe in the footsteps of the district’s pioneers, had set an extremely high benchmark. “The DVD premiere is an opportunity for teams to come together and celebrate their achievements and watch the highlights of the weekend,” he said. “It is also a chance for us to honour our sponsors and thank them for their support, since without them we would not be able to hold the event. “2015 is set to be another stellar year and the DVD premiere will help us engage with our sponsors and teams, and start looking at preparations for next year’s event.”

Show you are a Queenslander from birth Queenslanders have shown their pride and passion for State of Origin is as strong as ever with over 10,000 votes cast by Maroons fans for the official State of Origin commemorative birth certificate design. Attorney-General and Minister for Justice Jarrod Bleijie said although it was a tight contest, the traditional Chevron design proved to be the crowd favourite. “We wanted to hear from Queenslanders near and far to see which certificate best represented the Origin spirit and I’m pleased to say they’ve picked a timeless design that fits the bill perfectly,” he said. “It’s great to see thousands of supporters across the State took advantage of the unique opportunity over a four week voting period to have their say to determine what will be a long standing commemorative item. Mr Bleijie said a portion of proceeds from the sale of certificates would assist the Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages in providing life event regis-

tration and certification services to remote and Indigenous Queenslanders. “These certificates are available to all Queensland-born supporters, young and old, so I encourage them to show off their Maroons pride in this special way,” he said. “On behalf of fans, I congratulate Queensland on their phenomenal efforts over the last eight years.” To view the winning Chevron design or to purchase a State of Origin commemorative birth certificate, visit www.qld.gov.au/bdm

Nominations open for Small Business Week The Queensland Government is asking Queenslanders to nominate to host an event during 2014 Queensland Small Business Week. Small Business Week is on September 1-6 and celebrates the commitment, efforts and passion of the largest group of employers in the state. Tourism, Major Events, Small Business and the Commonwealth Games Minister Jann Stuckey said the Queensland Government was looking for as many government, industry and community groups to get involved by hosting an event. “Queensland Small Business Week is a chance to celebrate the contribution small business make and remind Queenslanders of the importance of buying locally,” he said. Generous gift for long time Lions Club member The Dimbulah Lions Club held their annual change over night to usher in the new management team at Canzian’s restaurant on Monday, July 14. More than 30 members and their guests attended the evening where Geoff Lawrence was handed the presidency, Brendon Goldsworthy remained as Secretary and Eddie Toffanello Treasurer. During the course of the evening Elio Crema Vice president of Friulani Nel Mondo presented the Dimbulah Lions Club with a $400 cheque from their own fundraisers held throughout the year. Jesus Conde, a member of the lions club since 1979, was quite surprised as the lions

club of Dimbulah purchased a mobility scooter for his personal use. A very emotional Mr Conde thanked the club for their generosity and said: “I will be able to get to where I want to go more quickly now, but I have to look out for cars.” Dimbulah Lions are all about community; Outgoing President Jamie De Lai thanked the many sponsors and members for their commitment through volunteering for various projects including the “Tobacco Plant” which was unveiled to the public at a ceremony in November last year and also for the huge effort in staging this year’s Lions Festival.

Why Travel when a quality family law expert is on your doorstop? Too often when living in small or remote communities the quality of service providers fall below the standard found in the “big smoke”- so they say. Not in FNQ. Far North Queensland is lucky to attract highly qualified individuals, who could quite easily match it with their professional colleagues down south, but are more than happy to trade professional gain for the quality lifestyle that Far North Queensland offers. Trading lifestyle does not mean trading standards. To maintain a practicing certificate all legal professionals must continually update their legal knowledge, regardless of where they live and one such professional is Lisa Stansfield. Lisa is a solicitor with Queensland firm Girgenti Lawyers which started in Mareeba five years ago. With music in her heart and country in her soul Lawyer Lisa hails from Ireland and is a graduate of James Cook University in Cairns. Lisa chooses to stay, work and play in this region – something she would never change. Whilst studying for her law degree, Lisa received an academic medal which recognized her academic excellent as well as the university Family Law prize for achieving the highest grade in her family law class. After university Lisa made the commitment to remain in Far North Queensland rather than pursuit a career “down south”. Opportunities were limited but Lisa was lucky to secure a position at a Cairns Law firm where she gained invaluable experience in a wide variety of legal matters. Lisa quickly realised that people needed a different kind of solicitor - someone who knew their area of

law inside out and could provide top class advice. Lisa set out to be that person and undertook further studies and recently completed her Masters Degree in Family Law. In 2012 Lisa joined the Girgenti Lawyers team, heading up their Family Law and Wills and Estates department. With her Masters degree behind her, Lisa brings an up to date and in-depth knowledge of the Family Law system. This style of practice is a positive move away from the old style where general practitioners often needed to brief a barrister to give detailed advice, which was an added expense to the client. Lisa can assist you with all your family law matters, including but not limited to: • Divorce • Children’s matters • Parenting Disputes; • Property Settlements; • Wills and Powers of Attorney; and • Estate distribution Lisa focuses on the amicable resolution of all family law matters, rather than litigation. In her spare time, she also volunteers with the Cairns Community Legal Centre, providing family law advice to those in need. If you want quality family law advice, contact Lisa today on (07) 4092 3555 or visit www.girgentilawyers.com.au

Beaut’ Ute brings life lessons Dimbulah Year 10 students Keeley Sclippa, Brendan Vedelago and Chloe Hrkac with Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher.

Schools and prisons are a far cry from the race track, but Andrew “Fishtail” Fisher covers it all. After a full throttle weekend of racing at the Townsville 500 in the Australian V8 Utes Series, the Jesus Racing driver took his replica racing V8 ute north to talk to students around the region and prisoners at the Lotus Glen Correctional Facility about the

Life Choices program. “I touch on issues such as smoking, drugs, teenage sex, road safety and faith,” Mr Fisher said. “I am not there to tell them what to do, or not to do, there is no point having that approach because you will just turn them off.” Every year Jesus Racing speaks to around 30,000 young people across

the country. Mr Fisher said his background in motor racing helped him to engage with audiences. “We take the replica race car with us, which is a real V8, so the students get excited when we make a bit of noise,” he said. Andrew’s next race in the Jesus Racing V8 Ute will be in September, at Sandown Raceway, in Melbourne.

TINKERBELL - PIRATE FAIRY

When a misunderstood dust-keeper fairy named Zarina steals Pixie Hollow's all-important Blue Pixie Dust, and flies away to join forces with the pirates of Skull Rock, Tinker Bell and her fairy friends must embark on the adventure of a lifetime to return it to its rightful place. However, in the midst of their pursuit of Zarina, Tink's world is turned upside down. She and her friends find that their respective talents have been switched and they have to race against time to retrieve the Blue Pixie Dust and return home to save Pixie Hollow.

Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan invites local cancer survivors and carers to lead the annual event.

Celebrating cancer survivors

vors to meet with people who can support and inspire them, and reinforce that they are not alone in their cancer journey. This is a great opportunity to talk with others who truly understand.

As the clock ticks over to 3pm on Saturday afternoon, survivors and carers take to the track proudly wearing a special sash that represents their cancer journey, and are cheered on by the crowd, who come together to honour their courage and strength.

Caregivers also find hope in Relay. These individuals give their time, love and support to friends, family and neighbours who face cancer. At Relay For Life, everyone understands the challenges and joys of being a caregiver. There is a peace of mind knowing that together we can face the challenges ahead.

This special Relay tradition is a time that inspires all participants and reminds them just what they are fighting for – a cancer free future. With less than two months to go until the Tablelands Relay For Life, I want to encourage survivors and carers to mark the date of the walk in their diary. All survivors and carers on the Tablelands are invited to take part in the opening lap, whether they are part of a team or not. Following the opening lap, an afternoon tea is held for everyone that took part. Relay offers a chance for our survi-

ers it's Optimus. Later, men from the unit show up looking for Optimus. He helps Yeager and his daughter escape but are pursued by the hunter. They escape and Yeager learns from technology he took from the men that a technology magnate and defence contractor named Joshua Joyce is part of what's going on, so they go to find out what's going on.

Survivors and carers can register for the opening lap and survivors afternoon tea prior to the day by phoning the CCQ Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85, or at the Relay registration desk on Saturday, September 13 from 1pm. Cancer Council Queensland’s Tablelands Relay For Life will be held on September 13-14 at Davies Park, Mareeba. To register visit relayforlife.org.au or phone Cancer Council’s Fundraising Hotline 1300 65 65 85.

Fierce competition on the hockey field In their first game after returning from the school holidays, the U10’s were all keen to assert their authority on the field and earn points to reach the top of the ladder. With All Stars taking on the Sharks a very close game evolved with neither side being able to gain the upper hand in the stages. Finally, Jack Fealy managed to get a brilliant goal in the box and put the All Stars ahead by the narrowest of margins. With time fast running out the Sharks, supported by Daniel Genge, Clarice Lucey, Andrew Earl and Lily Stein, were unlucky in not drawing the score. A great game with the All Stars the closest of victors 1/0. In the second game of the U10’s, All Stars again took the field opposing Raiders. With the help of Jack Fealy and Talitha MacDonald, who each scored a goal, All Stars were again dominant on the field. Raiders were unable to answer the great defence of Jack Fealy, who was the stand out player in the U10 competition showing excellent skill and dominance on the field. In the final match Raiders played off against Sharks in yet anoth-

er close game. With neither side able to get a goal in the box and both teams providing great defence, a nil all draw was inevitable. Connor and Declan West, supported by Adam and Bridie Keevers showed great skill on the field for Raiders, while Alivia Reis, Emily Simmonds and Felix Radcliffe were tenacious for the Sharks. All Stars are now top of the ladder and showing clear determination to remain there for the rest of the season. The Raiders and Sharks are battling it out for the honour of 2nd and 3rd with only one point the difference. With the end of the season fast approaching all games will be fiercely contested. The U13’s Troopers players the Scorchers in a game where the eventual score did not reflect the closeness of the match. Emily Muller, Gabby Pezzelato, Makenzie May and Lara MacCallum supported by the Scorchers were gallant in defeat to the Troopers. With great defence and superb gamesmanship the girls held the Troopers to a 0/3 loss. Keelan Boyd was dominant in the bid for the

Troopers with two superb goals, with Harry Phillips putting away the other goal. This win keeps Troopers on top of the ladder however with the Vikings showing increasing talent each week minor premiers will be hard to predict. In a game of skill and sheer guts the All Stars held Vikings to a 2 all draw. Abby Toshach and M Hamilton scored for the All stars, while Adam Keevers and M Toward shared the honours for the Vikings. Voodoos played Bombers in the first match of the U17’S. Alice Phillips (2), Loren Bryant, Nadia Tudini and A McDonald all managed to get goals in the box for Voodoos. The Bombers determined not to go without a battle also put five in the box in the game of the day. Nick Cifuentes, Nick Watson, Dan Knowles and Jack Howard all scored for the Bombers. The final score line of 5 all reflected the great game that spectators witnessed. All Stars took on the might of a rejuvenated U13 Boys Rep team in a really hard-fought game which saw both teams pitting their skills against

each other. All Stars managed to get 2 in the box while the boys scored 1. In the final game for the U17’s, a determined Totally Titled girls took the field against Malanda Magic. Charlie Marsh and Shelley McQuilty scored a goal apiece for the Titled girls, while Megan Wright scored for Malanda Magic. An extremely entertaining game that again showcased the development of both teams over the season. With the leader board extremely tight for the U17’s, the next few weeks may determine minor premiers for the year. The Veterans teams of Woteva and Plastered Vets played off against each other in a great game with Chrissie BeBrueys scoring 3 of the 4 goals for Plastered. Laurie Henley a long time veteran of the Woteva team and Noelene Lan both scored for Woteva with a final score line of 4-2 Plastered Vets. Waterloo were too strong for the Totally Holcim team with Helen Harris again being dominant in the goal box putting away two convincing goals. With Waterloo being top of the ladder, Totally Holcim played a great game to

keep the score 2-0. The men’s teams of Shed Boss Shamrocks played the U17 Bombers. Shed Boss Shamrocks unfortunately were unable to field a team with a scratch match being played instead. The other men’s match saw K9’s forfeit against the White Knights in a fast paced game which saw lots of spills and action on the field. In the final fixtures for the day Belair faced off against Pluckers in a gripping game which saw a 2 all draw. The name of Helen Harris is again dominant with both Belair goals courtesy of her great skills on the field. Jess Richardson and Amy Barletta scored for the Pluckers. Cruisers and Shooters had the game of the day with both teams working hard on the field with neither getting the edge throughout the game. Rosalie Sangster and Laura Trezise were excellent in the goal box for both teams contributing to the final nil all draw. The nil all draw will place added pressure on both teams to perform next week with Cruisers hoping to build upon their success.

Basketball spins in second season The second Season of the 2014 Mareeba Basketball Competition commences this week with trial games in Senior and Junior Divisions. These trials will allow the various Senior Men and Ladies sides to finalise their playing roster for the new Season fixtures. To kick start the Junior divisions a draw using last seasons’ teams will apply for this weeks’ trial games. However changes to all Junior teams are likely following the trials as Mareeba Basketball endeavours to have all Junior teams in a competitive situation against opposing sides throughout the season. All the new Under 16 Junior Division who have recently signed up are requested to be present at 4pm on Thursday, so that they can be allocated to a team for these trial games. New players joining Mareeba Basketball in Under 12 Junior Division should be at the PCYC Sports Hall at 4pm on Friday and all new Under 14 Junior Division be present at 5pm on Friday, so that they can compete in trial games. Coaching Clinics for the young Under 8 and Under 10 Juniors will be held on Fridays starting at 3.30pm. Any Senior or Junior player wishing to still sign up for the new Season will be welcomed.

EXPRESS sPORT Doggy day at kennel anniversary

Thrills and spills at speedway come and try day

DOGS of all shapes and sizes, from fluffy mammoths to petite pooches, put their best paw forward at the 40th anniversary of the Atherton Tablelands Kennel Club. The Mareeba Turf Club was the venue for more than 200 dogs and their owners, on July 12 and 13, with competition fierce in the ring. Daphne and Jim Zipperea founded the club in 1974 and one of the original members, Ley James, travelled to Mareeba from Cairns for the anniversary. Mr James also has the distinction of winning the Allan Butler Trophy in 1975, 1976 and 1977. He said kennel clubs have a

reputation for longevity and attributed this to the hobby being family friendly. “Kids come along and when they are seven-years-old they can start handling dogs,” Mr James said.

“We quite often lose young ones when they get to school leaving age, but there are a number of them that eventually come back. They get married and have kids of their own and they come back into showing.”

20-month-old German Pincer Zulu shows his curiosity at the 40th anniversary of the Atherton Tablelands Kennel Club.

Not winging it at footy A Mareeba sportswoman has taken the rough and tumble of rugby league to the state level. Northern Marlins winger Celeste Petersen, 16, competed at the state championships with her team coming out top of the ladder. The Northern Marlins beat South East Queensland, Capricorn Capras and South West Mustangs and only lost to the Wide Bay Bulls to take home the Karyn Murphy Shield. Despite the Northern Marlins only have two training days as a full team before the championships, Petersen said their winning formula was their ability to gel together. “They were pretty tough and there were a few hard games,” Petersen said. Petersen was a soccer goalkeeper before taking to the rugby league field this year and said while the sports were completely different, her experience as a goalie helped her with catching, running and maintaining her fitness levels. Watching league on television had also prepared her for the physicality of the sport. “I had grown up watching it and kind of knew how it was going to be,” she said.

Kiralee Gross is hooked after an adrenaline pumping ride at the Mareeba Speedway Come and Try day.

The thrum of engines and laughs of delight provided the soundtrack for the Mareeba Speedway’s Come and Try day. The public were welcomed into the gates and onto the track, on Saturday, to have a taste of the sport. Kiralee Gross drives past the speedway every day and thought she would check out what all the fuss was about. She jumped into the passenger seat for a whirl around the track and recommended everyone have a go. “I nearly died a couple of times,” she joked. “It was a little bit scary and we did a full 360. Getting hit in the face with mud just made the whole experience so much better.” Gross said feeling the acceleration

of the car and experiencing what it was like on the track were exhilarating. After a spin in the passenger seat, she now has her eyes set on having a crack behind the wheel. Mareeba Speedway Grants Officer Lorraine Cross hoped the day would give people a taste of what it is like to race and raise interest in the sport. Six drivers took keen members of the public out for a spin, with kids as young as ten jumping at the chance. “It really is great for kids because it is such a family orientated sport,” Ms Cross said. The day was put on with a $10,000 Queensland government Sports and Recreation grant.

World Cup Fever Paul Ruiz attacks the Leichhardt goal.

Bulls battle in hectic week Sandro Soncin has been bitten by the World Cup bug. The avid Mareeba-based football fan has recently returned after touring Brazil with the Green and Gold Army. The group of 250 fans followed the Australian team to Cuiaba, Porto Allege and Curitiba with the highlight being the Australia vs Netherlands game. “When Tim Cahill scored that amazing volley—that alone was worth the trip,” Soncin said. “At the games it was insane and there was a festive football culture. It’s just a big party, the restaurants would be full. The Ecuadoreans would be up until three o’clock and just dancing and singing. It was amazing to witness; we don’t have that culture here with any sport in Australia.” Soncin said he went to the World Cup knowing that Australia was the

lowest ranked team and expected to cop a whipping. However, while he was there he found that international fans had taken notice of Australia and expected the side to grow into their potential. “Even though we lost, that second game especially, it felt like we had won,” Soncin said. Despite reports about the lack of security in Brazil and riots surrounding the World Cup, Soncin said he never felt unsafe and Brazilians were welcoming of football fans. After the fun of the World Cup in Brazil, Soncin now hoped to go to the World Cup in Russia. “After you’ve been to one, you sort of get the bug to carry on,” he said.

A spate of injuries saw the Roosters team decimated when they came up against Brothers, last weekend. Roosters coach Jamie Blain put the 36-6 thrashing down to the massive injury toll the Roosters received, including leg injuries, a dislocated shoulder, wrist injuries and a knee injury. “They turned up to play and full credit to them,” Blain said. “It was a tough game of A-grade footy. We had 16 men on the field and that got whittled away to 12 men, but the team

didn’t give up and kept on going until the full time siren.” The game also saw Roosters players stepping up to A-grade, with four players from the reserve side and two from the under-18s taking to the field. Blain said the team was focused on “getting on the paddock” when they take on the Mareeba Gladiators. “For some of these players they have season ending injuries,” he said. “We want to get on the paddock and get our percentages up.”

Brothers thrash Roosters

The Mareeba Bulls completed a hectic week playing three games in six days with a tough 2-0 win over the Leichhardt Lions, at Borzi Park, last Thursday night. A great opening 20 minutes saw the Lions goalkeeper Nathan Haydon palm away efforts from Bulls strikers Anthony mete and Elliot Gardner. The away side started to impose themselves on the Bulls and could have considered themselves unlucky, as they struck the

wood work only for the Bulls to break and Mete to finally beat Haydon at his near post, with only minutes remaining in the first half, but the Bulls could have gone clear on the stroke of half time with Paul Ruiz putting a great chance over the bar. The second half was as a reflection of the first in the early stages where the Bulls tried to settle, but were unable to produce the slick passing game they were accustomed to. It was not until midfielder

Robert Pendenza headed home with ten minutes to go that the Bulls were able to relax. Injuries to key players Wayne Srhoj and Steven Cater were a result of the 1-0 loss to Edge Hill United, on Tuesday night, in the FA Cup match. The result keeps the Bulls in top spot on the FNQ premiership table and the team now looks forward to a much needed break before they take on Marlin Coast Rangers, on Saturday, July 26.
