Too close to call Gilmore edges ahead with postal votes to decide Mayoral race

TOM Gilmore is a narrow frontrunner over Mick Borzi in a Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) election that is set to go down to the wire. At deadline, the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) website showed little more than a percentage point separated the two political warriors. Mr Gilmore had 5,283 votes to Mr Borzi’s 5,136 for a lead of 147. All booths are in and have been counted and recounted, with about 300 outstanding postal ballots to determine the Mayoral race. Postal votes can be received until November 19. Given the tightness of the race the formal announcement of the winner won’t be made until after the final vote comes in. Late on election night, Mr Gilmore held a 247 vote lead with The Express receiving a series of text messages from sources claiming Mr Borzi could not claw back the difference. The Express understands that during the recount on Sunday, 100 votes had been counted for Mr Gilmore instead of Mr Borzi with the margin narrowing. The day after the election, Mr Gilmore said that

should he get over the line the coming two years was pivotal for the future of the Shire. “There has probably never been a more important time in our community’s history. We now must heal that hurt and close the gate on all the things that were said in the past,” he said. “The community must now come together with the one essential goal of making the Mareeba Shire an enormously successful, proud and wonderful place that it has always been.” On Sunday afternoon, Mr Borzi said it was unlikely that he would be able to finish over the top of Mr Gilmore but refused to concede until the final figures came in. “I accept the decision of the voters and at this stage it is highly unlikely that I will win the election,” he said. “I would like to thank all who supported me and ‘Your Team’ throughout the campaign. I have always accepted the jury’s verdict.” The make-up of the rest of the MSC had yet to be determined by deadline with less than 50 per cent of the vote counted. Local Government Minister David Crisafulli spoke to The Express after the election. He said that all elected representatives needed to be ready to “hit the ground running” on January 1, 2014.

$75,000 raised by walkers By Ryan Groube THE creaks and aches of tired legs was eased somewhat following the announcement the 2013 Tablelands Relay for Life raised $75,000 for cancer research and support services. On Sunday morning, about 450 walkers from 33 teams continued their non-stop route of the Atherton Show Grounds as part of a Cancer Council Queensland (CCQ) fund-raiser that had begun 18 hours earlier. Among the fading, but resilient, walkers on Sunday morning were Jenny Todd and Janet Stonage from the ‘Swap It Don’t Stop It’ team. Pushing their team mascot ‘Ranga’, an orange dog mounted on wheels, the pair conceded that they were starting to slow down but had every confidence in making it through to the end of the relay at 9am. “His [Ranga’s] wheels are starting to get a bit wobbly,” Jenny said. “Yeah, a bit like the rest of us,” Jenny quipped. At 8.50am all teams took to the circuit one last time before the close of the event at 9am before delivering an enthusiastic countdown from 10 seconds to the end of the Relay. Tablelands Relay for Life chair Leon Tunnie told the gathered crowd that although they had collected $75,000 – late donations and uncounted money is expected to tip the fund-raising tally to $100,000.

Mareeba Relay for Life team Sisterhood were the top fund-raisers at the 2013 Tablelands Relay for Life, pictured with Tablelands Relay chair Leon Tunnie. “It [$100,000] is a huge result,” Mr Tunnie told The Express. “Over the five years we have been running the Tablelands Relay for Life our community has donated a combined total of more than $800,000. “This event is all about saying ‘No’ to cancer and every year our Tableland community shines.” Mareeba team ‘Sisterhood’ again topped the fund-raising charts, raising about $14,000. Team member Rita Conroy said the team collected money for the event year round. “We know it is for a good cause but we also have fun while we are doing it [fund-raising],” Ms Conroy said. “All of this money goes to helping cancer victims and everyone knows someone who has it.” CCQ representative Taryn Atique applauded the

Mt Molloy school performance ‘flawless’ By Boyd Robertson The performance of 12 Angry Pigs by the students of Mt Molloy State School at the Julatten One Act Festival at Geraghty Park on Saturday night was a great success, attracting a crowd of about 200 people. Twelve Angry Pigs, a one-act-play originally written by Wade Bradford, merges classic film Twelve Angry Men and fairytale The Three Little Pigs. The play sets up a tense jury-room clash of wills between porcine jurors deciding the fate of the Big Bad Wolf, on trial for property destruction after blowing down two pig houses. Legal advice provided to The Express also indicates that the Wolf could also be up for attempted murder and stalking, given his attempt to chase and eat the pigs. While it would seem to be a cut-and-dry case, debates over the reliability of witnesses and possible media bias between the jurors soon make a pig’s ear of things.

Guest appearances by Little Boy Blue, Little Red Riding Hood and other fairytale characters also feature. The entire student body of Mt Molloy Primary School was involved in the production, with 26 students from Prep to Year 7 taking the stage throughout the play. Pete Chepillod from the Julatten Theatre Group volunteered as producer and director, and said the students had put in a great effort to have to play ready in time. “We’ve had only about three weeks of preparation,” Mr Chepillod said. “The kids have put in a great effort to put it all together in such a short time; we’ve had very intense rehearsals and preparation. “It’s a great play, the humour is made for both children and adults and there’s twists in the story so it tricks the mind a bit.” Mr Chepillod said the students were “flawless in their performance” and that the production had been “extremely wellreceived”

efforts of the Tableland community. “It has been very good. Team numbers were a little down but we weren’t down in spirit or atmosphere,” she said. “We are well on track to hit the $100,000 mark which is an incredible effort given the size of the Tableland community and given how generous they have been in the past. The money that we raise through Relay goes towards cancer research and to funding support services for people with the disease.” Throughout the event, walkers were kept entertained with a Rock ‘n’ Roll dance workshop, a talent quest and a huge scavenger hunt as well as performances from the region’s best musicians. Photos from the event can be found on page 11.

Economic snapshot ‘sobering’ By Ryan Groube ABOUT half of all Tableland businesses are turning over less than $100,000 a year as four out of 10 locals struggle to make ends meet on an annual wage of less than $20,800. The “sobering” figures are contained in a 64-page economic snapshot of the region, released with little fanfare by Tablelands Futures Corporation (TFC) on November 5. TFC is the Tablelands peak regional development organisation, funded by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) and made up of an unpaid board of directors from business and industry. Chair of TFC Michael Lawrence said the report Our economy, our future brings together the most up-to-date economic and industry data. Mr Lawrence was unapologetic about releasing an economic report that shows that the region is lagging behind not only Australian and Queensland benchmarks but also other rural areas. “It does more harm than good if we try and paint a picture that we don’t have,” Mr Lawrence said. “This report ensures that all the relevant stakeholders from government to industry and to business know what is going on in our region. Without knowing there is nothing we can do to address these issues.” Key findings in the report show labour force participation – a percentage of working age people who are employed or looking for work – at 54.7 per cent, well behind regional Queensland (60.9 per cent) and Australian (61.4 per cent) benchmarks. The median weekly income for a worker on the Tableland is $451 a week, $102 less per week compared with other areas in regional Queensland and $261 less than the Australian average. Unemployment on the Tableland (10.3 per cent) is almost double the State average (5.9 per cent) while 2133 people travel outside the region for work compared with 1075 that travel to the Tableland. The majority of the figures used in the report are drawn from Australian Bureau of Statistics information released during

the final quarter of 2012. Despite having made on the record comments welcoming the report at its launch, TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long declined to comment on the findings to The Express. In a brief statement, Cr Lee Long said: “This report needs to be carefully studied and all factors looked at in context. Until that has happened, no informed comment can be made.” Member for Cook David Kempton said the Tableland had come a long way since the figures had been released but conceded more needed to be done. “We know that if we can restore confidence and create the conditions for growth then businesses will start to employ more people,” he said. “There’s clear evidence businesses believe conditions are improving in the region and they have a positive outlook for the next 12 months.” A Mareeba Chamber of Commerce spokesperson said while the data contained in the report was concerning there was a sense of optimism in the local business community. “Local businesses have expressed growth in the past six months which is strong indication that things are on the move,” “While Mareeba does have a few empty shops in the main street – these do not all reflect business closure but more business expansion and new developments. In the past month I can name three new businesses opening in Mareeba alone – this alone shows confidence. “The low annual business turnover could contribute to quite a few things such as home-based businesses, hobby farms and family-run businesses.” Mr Lawrence said the report was “a starting point” and that there was further space to expand on the investment opportunities within the region on an industry by industry basis. He said TFC are looking for feedback, particularly if people feel key data had been omitted. The report will have a limited print run and is available online by following the links at http://www.tablelandsfutures.com

club news Monthly catch-up with the mareeba LIONS CLUB Thinking of joining a service club. Give Lions two hands and become part of the largest humanitarian organisation in the world. Phone the membership director Gilbert today. Lions from Mareeba, Mossman, Atherton and Malanda as well as other Far Northern Clubs were recently involved in World Sight Day. Chairman of the World Sight Day committee Tom Braes said the day was a huge success. Free eye screenings were conducted at the Mossman primary school and at St Augustine’s Catholic school for prep children and at the Mossman Shire Hall for the community at large. 80 children and 80 adults were screened. This screening has proven critical in the detection of eye conditions which would otherwise have gone undetected. Of the 80 adults screened 2530% had deficiencies identified, and 50% of those identified had significant problems that if left untreated could have led to loss of sight. Of the 80 children screened, 20 needed follow up investigation. Lions International Foundation in conjunction with partners Essilor Australia and Scholastic Australia made a number of donations to the community intended to assist with eye care and children’s reading. In particular over $13,000.00 was given to Cairns Hospital for specialist eye equipment, $5,000.00 each to low vision eye clinics in Mackay, Townsville and Cairns, $1750.00 to each of the Port Douglas, Mossman, St Augustine’s, and Kuranda schools for children’s books, $5,000.00 to Mossman Hospital for specialist eye equipment, and a motor vehicle to Mossman Hospital to transport to Cairns people who might otherwise be unable to afford the cost of transport to Cairns and therefore go without specialist eye treatment. Already the donated bus has proven popular with 2 loads booked to take patients to Cairns for follow-up treatment, a great result and proof that the Lions donated bus will really make a difference.

Lion John and Lioness Delsi DeLai were named Communitarians of the Year at the Chamber of Commerce annual Business Awards. Congratulations to John, Delsi and Gary. Congratulations also to all other nominees and the Chamber of Commerce for hosting such an important event. You can give someone the gift of sight simply by donating your used eye glasses to Mareeba Lions Mareeba Lions continues to collect glasses and hearing aids to be cleaned, graded and distributed to other less fortunate people in third world countries. If you have any old eye glasses or hearing aids then Lions will be only too pleased to recycle them for you. Although membership of Lions is by invitation you are invited to enquire about joining this great international humanitarian organisation. It is not hard to become a Lion. Fellowship, Good times, Meeting people, Building lasting friendships, Service to the community, Learning new skills, Leadership and personal development - these are some of the reasons we are the Lions. Ratepayers to foot travel costs By Ryan Groube MAREEBA Shire ratepayers will be forced to fork out hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for the travel expenses of council staff affected by de-amalgamation. A rarely-used section in the Tablelands Regional Council’s (TRC) Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA) will add as much as $538,000 to the cost of deamalgamation. Under section 14.7.4 of the EBA, extra travel allowances are paid to staff that are transferred from one work location to another for a maximum period of six months. Staff are entitled to: $35 a working day, a mileage allowance using Australian Tax Office rates, as well as travelling time for any additional distance travelled in getting to the new workplace. “With staff transferring from Atherton to Mareeba and also a significant number

from Mareeba to Atherton, potentially as a worst-case scenario, the additional de-amalgamation cost could be up to $538,000,” a report to the November 7 TRC meeting said. The TRC is the only one of the four de-amalgamating councils to be facing this cost. The report to council conceded that the TRC, the de-amalgamation proponents and Queensland Treasury Corporation had all overlooked the expense. Mareeba Shire Council transfer manager Rod Ferguson said that the issue had come as a surprise but that “there is no way around it”. The travel entitlement is capped at 26 weeks. The section was originally included in the EBA so as to not penalise staff that were forced to temporarily cover positions in other parts of the region.

2015 election campaign underway ues of education and anti-privatisation. “One of the things I learned going to school up here is that if you get the same education at Dimbulah as you do at Smithfield in Cairns, you have the same opportunity as anyone else when you go for that job.” Mr Gordon has attended a series of union rallies in Mareeba in the past month and said privatisation was not in the best interest of the far northern community. “Privatisation doesn’t serve the community, it only serves the shareholder, and I think there are things like education, health, law and order and electricity to an extent that really should not be privatised – privatisation serves only the shareholder and it doesn’t serve the community.” Member for Cook David Kempton said he would keep representing the people of his electorate and would stand on his record on election day.

State opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk and newly-announced Labor candidate for Cook Billy Gordon.

Queensland’s opposition has identified the electorate of Cook as a key battleground as Labor moves to recover from its crippling defeat at the 2012 State election. Despite the next State election not being due until mid-2015, Labor has pulled the trigger early in pre-selecting Billy Gordon as its candidate for the sprawling far northern seat. Opposition leader Annastacia Palaszczuk travelled to the far north on November 6 to unveil the Innisfailraised, father of five as its candidate. Mr Gordon was the third candidate pre-selected last week by Labor, following the announcement of former Attorney-General Kerry Shine and Gail Hislop in the seats of Toowoomba North and Burleigh respectively. Cook had been held by Labor since 1977 before David Kempton defeated Jason O’Brien in 2012. Mr Kempton holds the seat by 3.3 per cent. Speaking to The Express in Mareeba, Ms Palaszczuk said it was vital Labor got “candidates in the field” early on so they could build their profile and provide an alternative. “We need people out there meeting with and talking to as many people as possible,” she said. “This is a long, hard road back for Labor; we were dealt a horrific blow in the last election and left only with seven sitting members. “I’m not taking anything for granted, but anything is possible in Queensland and I absolutely believe that Billy can win this seat – you’ll also see a lot more of me up here supporting Billy and the other candidates.” Mr Gordon already has a strong profile in the far north, having stood unsuccessfully for the Federal seat of Leichhardt against long-time MP Warren Entsch. Despite failing to win the seat, Mr Gordon secured 32.57 per cent of the primary vote. Mr Gordon said he has a close connection with Mareeba having done some of his education in the town as well as having previously worked with Q.I.T.E and at the local TAFE. 4 : 2 3 : 2 3 PM AEST His early platform sticks with the core Labor val-

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal underway By Boyd Robertson The Tablelands Regional Council (TRC)’s Mayor’s Christmas appeal makes the festive season a little brighter for those who otherwise might miss out by raising money to donate hampers of food to needy families. Hampers are distributed by charity groups and community service organisations around the Tableland including the Salvation Army, St Vincent’s De Paul and Blue Care Mareeba among many others. TRC mayor Rosa Lee Long has urged the community to remember their charitable spirits and support the appeal this Christmas. “I invite everyone who is able to take on the spirit of Christmas and join with the Tablelands Regional Council to make the festive season easier for those in

need,” she said. “It is meant to be a time of happiness and togetherness, not a time to be worrying about having enough basic food in the kitchen. “I urge everyone to support the appeal by sending in a donation.” Donations for the appeal can be made at Council service centres in Mareeba, Atherton, Herberton, Malanda and Kuranda Library. Those further away can also help by making out a cheque payable to ‘Mayor’s Christmas Appeal’ and sending it to PO Box 154, Mareeba 4880. Donations are tax deductible but Council can only accept financial contributions, not food or other items. Last year Tablelanders donated $11,177 to the appeal, enough for 237 hampers to be distributed.

Skyrail gets message from the Queen Skyrail human resources co-ordinator Narelle Merritt holds the 2014 Commonwealth Games Baton in a cableway gondola. By Boyd Robertson Kuranda tourism icon Skyrail Rainforest Cableway got some international attention on November 4 when it became part of the 2014 Commonwealth Games Queen’s Baton Relay. The baton, which contains a message from Queen Elizabeth and is passed from carrier to carrier across the Commonwealth Territories ahead of the games, travelled aboard a Skyrail gondola from Cairns to Red Peak Station. It was also carried through Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park and flown over the Great Barrier Reef to Green Island. Skyrail managing director Max Shepherd said hosting part of the relay was a “major coup” for the company and for far northern Queensland in general. “I think it’s fantastic, it’s definitely a coup for tourism here,” he said. “To have the baton come through far northern Queensland, Cairns and especial-

ly Skyrail is unbelievable – we’ve already had the Olympic Torch come through a few years ago and now we have this happening.” “I couldn’t have designed the package better myself – it shows off the rainforest and the mountains with us, it shows off the Reef by going out to Green Island and it also shows everyone the Indigenous culture aspects through Tjapukai.” The Commonwealth Games are described as the third-biggest international athletics event in the world behind the Olympics and Asian Games. Sportspeople from the Commonwealth of Nations - the former territories of the British Empire - come together to compete not only in Olympic-type events like running, high jump and javelin but also sports like lawn bowls. The baton covers 190,000 kilometres across 70 different nations and territories on its 288-day journey, starting from Buckingham Palace in London and finishing in Glasgow for the opening of the Games on July 23, 2014.

Assistant Minister for Volunteering Ted Malone presents Georgetown SES controller Julie Dance an award for the small units response to the fatal car crash of Constable Casey Blain.

Volunteers recognised with awards By Ryan Groube DECKED out in orange overalls, about 140 far northerners who volunteer with the State Emergency Services (SES) were recognised at an awards ceremony on the shores of Lake Tinaroo on Saturday. The regional awards presentation marked the beginning of National SES Week celebrations with a Mareeba family and one of the far north’s smallest units taking out major awards. Georgetown’s SES group, which has 10 active members, won the Operational Response of the Year award for their efforts in responding to the single vehicle crash that claimed the life of Constable Casey Blain on March 29. Emergency Management Queensland area director Darryl Camp refused to go into the specifics of the operation but said the small SES unit had gone “above and beyond” what was required. “In small towns our road crash rescue teams are the first responders for their community because there are no red trucks out in those areas,” he said. “That group of volunteers did what they did out of a sense of commitment to their community.” The awards also recognised long and meritorious service to the SES with four members of the Bell family from Mareeba receiving medals for more than 25 years of service. Grant and John Bell joined the SES in July 1985 before their better halves – Jody and Valda – signed up the following year. Grant said it was nice to have received the recognition: “but it is not why we do it. It is just a nice sort of thing that comes around once every five years.” Other major award winners included: Susan Fineham from Buchan Point (Member of the Year), Trinity Beach SES Unit (Unit of the Year) while SES Week awards were presented to Nola Coates, Jessica Mason-Hamilton, Andrew Herrington, John Parsons, Rodney Wallace and Karen Weston.

Mr Camp said: “We don’t pay our volunteers not because they are worthless, it is because they are priceless.” Assistant Minister for Volunteering Ted Malone was the guest speaker at the event and was charged with presenting award winners with their plaques and medals. “The presentations we are making today are to recognise our volunteers for the job that they do so well,” Mr Malone told The Express. “I joined the SES back in 1967 and while I am no longer an active member I understand and empathise with what the SES does and I recognise the role they play in some of our toughest times.” Mr Malone also handed over seven flood boats and a new Isuzu truck to SES units from Cairns and surrounding areas at the ceremony with a combined value of more than $500,000. “Cardwell, Mossman, Kuranda, Mission Beach, Yarrabah, Mt Garnet and Tully SES Units all received new flood boats,” he said. “The Cairns SES Unit also received a new Isuzu dual cab truck worth more than $93,000. This truck was funded through the Support Our Heroes Election Commitment.” Emergency Management Queensland (EMQ) Northern Region Director Wayne Coutts said the new truck and flood boats would strengthen volunteer capabilities to assist the community wherever and whenever they were needed. “This equipment will assist the SES to attend even more incidents across Northern Region, including flood and storm response during the wet season and assisting police with search operations,” Mr Coutts said. National SES Week is run from November 9-17 as an opportunity to recognise SES volunteers for the role they play in serving the community during cyclones, floods and other emergencies. A full list of winners will be uploaded to The Express Facebook page.

theregion Kempton inspects fire station progress Member for Cook David Kempton and senior firefighters inspected the progress of construction of the new Mareeba Fire Station last week. The $2 million station is expected to be completed by February 2014. Mr Kempton said the firies were impressed with how the building was progressing. “It is great to see construction running ahead of schedule for this much-needed facility. Boost for health services in Malanda Tablelands Regional Council has voted unanimously in favour of a new medical centre at Malanda. At its most recent meeting Council considered a material change of use application for a site at 2 Angus St, Malanda to take it from a residential classification to a business premises. In a report to Council on the application, Council planners indicated the site had a sealed and kerbed road frontage and was adjacent to Eacham Place park. The proposed medical centre would be contained within the existing building, a maximum of four medical and two support staff were expected, and no after hours service would be operated. Council voted unanimously in favour of the application. “It is a pleasure to see additional medical services coming to the Tablelands, Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. “I am sure residents in the Malanda area will be happy to have better access to GP support. The report indicated physiotherapy would also be offered.

Spike in tourism numbers Visitors at Tablelands Regional Council Visitor Information Centres reached their highest total since 2008 in the July-September quarter of this year. The information was included in a report to Tablelands Regional Council at its most recent meeting. Visitor numbers totalled 86,226. The report showed steady increases in visitor numbers for the same quarter dating back to 2011, and a marked increase over 2008, when 60,000 visitors were recorded. “The report indicates that the new Malanda Visitor Information Centre has contributed to the latest result, Mayor Rosa Lee Long said. “However, I believe the dedication of our staff and our wonderful volunteers at all the VICs is a major factor. In the report, the role of the Atherton VIC as an agent for Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service campsite booking was identified as extremely popular now that no online campsite bookings were available in Queensland. Kuranda Visitor Information Centre is awaiting finalisation of tenders for construction of a new facility while work on developing the potential of touch screens for archiving and presenting local stories continued. The Mareeba Heritage Centre attracted almost 150 people to the Opening of the Carrier’s Arms, part of a new street facade at the museum. A temporary Visitors Information Centre was established during the Cycle Queensland tour of the Tablelands, taking bookings for tours and accommodation as well as information and advice to cyclists. Also included in the report was an indication that Recreational Vehicle traveller numbers to the area have increased 21 per cent over last year. “Our region has a great environment, wonderful landscape, top attractions and a network of Visitor Information Centres that help tourists make the most of their stay, Councillor Lee Long said. “An annual visitor survey has shown 75 per cent of respondents indicating they would extend their stay after visiting a VIC in our region. “That is a great indication of the valuable contribution all of our VICS make to our tourist industry and regional economy.

Cooktown Croc caught on camera This great photograph was taken by Cook Shire Council worker Patrick Wilson. In the past week Cooktown locals and rangers have reported an “alarming increase in crocodile sightings. Since last Friday, the Queensland Parks & Wildlife crew have caught and sent away two crocodiles to Edward River Croc Farm (Pormpuraaw). One was 2.7 metres long, the other 3.7 metres. A trap has been reset to catch a four metre alpha male and the 2.4 metre crocodile, pictured. Mr Wilson took the photo during his lunch break at the Cooktown waterfront. A spokesperson from Cook Shire Council implored people to heed the advice of warning signs. Time to nominate great Aussies NOMINATIONS are open for the 2014 Tablelands Regional Council Australia Day awards and new Mareeba Shire Council Australia Day awards. Blanch the onion slices by submerging them in boiling water for three minutes. Then shock them in a cold water bath for 3 minutes so they don’t over cook. Then stuff them into your prepared jar. Meanwhile, heat the vinegar, water, sugar, salt, black pepper and bay leaf in a saucepan until the sugar has dissolved and everything is just starting to simmer. Do not cook too long or evaporation will ruin your ratios. Pour the vinegar mixture over the onions in a jar. Let cool to room temperature on the counter. RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

The new film at The Rising Sun Cinema this week is About Time. A comedy drama about time travel, with a good bit of romance in the mix as well . It's one of those delightful feel good films that are in such short supply at the moment – this makes it magic cinema entertainment . Bill Nighy and Rachel McAdams are in the starring roles Also continuing are the excellent Blue Jasmin, with Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin, as well as the high octane drama Rush, which is also based on a true story. We can certainly recommend these two films to anyone who appreciates a quality movie. Finally, Thor - The Dark World continues for its third great final week at The Rising Sun.

Dans Le Noir, a pitch-black London restaurant experience in which guests socialise with each other "in the dark". The love scene that starts so awkwardly but improves with every rewind of the clock takes us, the audience into its confidence, and we become part of Tim's secret as he tries to influence his fate and those involved. The script is finely tuned and so is the execution, while the performances are pitch perfect. Gleeson (son of Brendan) is wonderfully self-effacing in a role that is another version of Hugh Grant's charming, stumbling Englishman. McAdams, with her dimples and feminine manner is lovely as Mary, while Nighy is wonderfully off-beat as only Nighy (and Bill Murray) can be. All the supporting cast is good too: each character rings out the notes of truth. There are loads of laughs and it feels as though we are in the company of friends. But there are surprises too, the biggest of which is the way the emotional textures ripen to develop into something richer when you least expect it. If you loved Four Weddings and Love Actually, you will also love this warm, funny and uplifting film that champions living each moment to the max.

THOR: THE DARK WORLD - Faced with an enemy that even Odin

(Anthony Hopkins) and the fantastic realm of Asgard cannot withstand, Thor (Chris Hemsworth) must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

3. Here they compete viciously against each other until Lauda's superior business acumen and surgeon like precision behind the wheel propels him all the way to Formula 1; eventually landing him the number one spot at Ferrari. However it's not long before unruly golden boy James Hunt fights his way into Formula 1, and into the hearts of a nation, dramatically seizing the world championship from Lauda and proving to the critics, and more importantly himself, that there is real substance beneath his stylish exterior. Polar opposites pitted against each other in the most dangerous sport in the world, Hunt and Lauda are pushed to the breaking point of their physical and psychological endurance.

BLUE JASMINE -

When she loses everything after her husband Hal (Alec Baldwin), is revealed as a scam artists, Park Avenue high society wife Jasmine (Cate Blanchett) is forced to slum it with her blue-collar sister Ginger (Sally Hawkins) in San Francisco. She struggles to build a new life without her husband's illegally-obtained wealth and without the emotional stability she craves.

RUSH -

Privileged, charismatic and handsome English playboy, James Hunt (Chris Hemsworth) could not be more different from his reserved and methodical opponent, Austrian born Niki Lauda (Daniel Bruhl). Their rivalry begins in Formula

ABOUT TIME - At the age of 21, Tim Lake's (Domhnall Gleeson) father (Bill Nighy) tells his son that the men in his family have always had the ability to travel through time. Tim can't change history, but he can change what happens and has happened in his own life, so he decides to make his world a better place by getting a girlfriend. Moving from the Cornwall coast to London to train as a lawyer, Tim finally meets the beautiful but insecure Mary (Rachel McAdams). They fall in love, but an unfortunate time-travel incident means he's never met her at all. So they meet for the first time again and again, but finally, after a lot of cunning time travelling, he wins her heart. Tim then uses his power to create the perfect romantic proposal, but that's not the end of it. The LAND From family to corporate farms

The future of growing rice on the Tablelands

By Ryan Groube Shrinking profit margins could see the agricultural base on the Tableland shift from family farms to large corporate farming according to Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association chair Joe Moro. Mr Moro’s comments follow the release of an economic snapshot of the region which shows more than half (54 per cent) of all farming businesses on the Tableland are turning over less than $100,000 each year. The Our economy, our future report, released by regional development group Tablelands Futures Corporation shows that while agriculture remains the areas key industry – with a gross value of production of $404 million a year, many within the industry are under stress. Since 2006, the number of people the sector employs has contracted by 96 jobs while the workforce aged between 30 and 34 has declined by 392. Of the 1429 farming businesses on the Tableland, 570 are turning over less than $50,000 annually with a further 207 turning over less than $100,000. Mr Moro said the ageing generation of farmers were renowned for their stubbornness in “sticking it out” but that many family farms had been dying a “slow death” for decades. An information night hosted by pulse company Blue Ribbon Rice on November 6 aimed to allay fears over previous failed experiments with rice growing on the Tableland and promote the crop to local growers. Blue Ribbon Rice is based in the Burdekin region and is looking to expand its grower base by 15,000 hectares on the Tableland in order to spread out risk. Attempts by SunRice at establishing a permanent rice industry in the region had

met with failure but Blue Ribbon operations manager Steven Rogers said his company had a finely-tuned set of instructions for growers to make sure their crop was successful. Key points Mr Rogers wanted to make during the presentation was that rice did not need to be grown in water and that careful control over fertilizer levels and timing were critical to a healthy crop. His efforts appear to have convinced several farmers to try growing rice in the coming seasons. Nick Reynolds from Innot Enterprises

currently grows maize and peanuts at Innot Hot Springs, and said he was seriously considering starting a rice crop. “I think if you’re serious in this business you have to explore all the options, so I think we’ll give it a go,” he said. “Of course you take what these guys are saying with a grain of salt but I think rice is definitely one of those options. “A lot of people in the world eat rice and if we claim to be living in the new food bowl of Australia then we’d better start taking advantage of what we can do here.”

Welcome to Country Road Estate, Mareeba There aren’t many areas on the Tablelands where can you buy a one acre blocks at the starting price of a mere $125,000. You’d almost have to ask yourself “Why buy a 1000sq meter allotment, when for a bit more money I can get four times as much land”? Country Road Estate is on the Cairns side of Mareeba, which makes the distance to Smithfield a mere 35 minute drive, and three quarters of an hour to Cairns city centre. The estate enjoys a superior setting away from the main road, as you turn into the estate, the half kilometre drive takes you past a small dam that is often frequented by a various bird species and leads you to the top of the hill. The front lots shown in the photos have this view over the lake towards the west, where the sunsets are a site to behold and in the mornings hot air balloons at times land near the lake. Although most blocks are level, the land is partially undulating with almost every block having selected trees left on them. The breezes are noticeable all day cooling the hot midday temperatures and the claim of 300 sunny days a year is a pleasant fact. Nights are at least three to six degrees cooler than Cairns and there is very little humidity. The major benefit of living here is that there are no worries of cyclones or flooding. So, if you are in the market for a block of land, I would strongly recommend taking a drive up to the estate, get out of your car to enjoy the breeze and views. Averaging a healthy net profit of $100,000 each year for the past 5 years, this successful organic farm and dried fruit business operation is being offered for sale. The business is widely diversified and combines sales of fresh produce with value adding processed products (dried fruit) to local and domestic markets in addition to sales at the farm gate. Increased usage of the dehydrators by way of external farm mango purchases or drying other fruits such as bananas, paw paws, pineapple and vegetables. Atherton Lionesses donate $6000 to local organisations The Atherton Lioness Club have spent another year working tirelessly to raise money for local charities and people needing a hand to achieve their goals. There have been many events in 2013, such as, catering for the Atherton Rooster home games, sausage sizzles, cake stalls, catering for the Garden Expo and many hours selling raffle tickets – thanks to the public who never fail to give us their backing in all our endeavours. This year various amounts were donated to different and well deserving people. The three major donations of $2,000 were recently donated to the Atherton local Ambulance committee, the Atherton Hospital Auxilliary and the Tinaroo Rural Fire Brigade.

Malanda Horse and Pony Club was the host club for the Zone 18 Annual Gymkhana on November 2 and 3. The weekend also saw the crowing of Miss Pony Club Personality and Miss Pony Club Highest Fundraiser. Horse floats and campers began trickling in to the Malanda Showgrounds on Friday afternoon, steadily building right up until the March Past on Saturday which attracted 90 competitors. The March Past was won by the Atherton club. During the day the competitors competed in a series of events including: rider class, presentation, jumping, and sporting events. Alexis Evans, Corissa Evans and Krystal Cowell won the 7 and 8 Years Age Group Club Team Shield for the Malanda Pony Club. Clive Gordon was awarded a prestigious life

membership award by the zone at the Gymkhana. On Saturday night, the Malanda Club catered for a zone presentation dinner at the Malanda Show Pavilion which was attended by more than 170. There were seven Quest Entrants representing clubs from across the far northern zone. Malanda’s Maddison Sudgen-Smith was crowned Miss Senior Personality while Babinda’s entrant Ava Williams won Miss Junior Personality. Ava also took out the fund-raising crown after raising more than $13,000. Sunday marked the end of competition with Babinda pipping Mareeba for the highest point tally for clubs. Zone 18 president Hazel Bensted said the weekend had been fantastic and congratulated the Malanda Pony Club for successfully hosting the event.

Roy, Maisel propel Bandits Swimmers By Ryan Groube

With his heavily pregnant wife sitting in the stands, Adam Roy didn’t mess around as he blasted the Bandits out of trouble with a glorious century at Kerribee Park on Sunday. Roy strode to the crease with the Bandits in big trouble at 4-45 against a fired up Cairns United. He found a handy ally in Nate Maisel who brilliantly held down an end on the way to a score of 37 as the pair shared in a 162 run partnership for the fifth wicket. “It really bought us back into the game,” senior Bandit Danny Shaw said. “His wife is due any day so we were telling her to hold it in as he

dream of Rio berth

was getting closer to his century. “Nate did a great job just holding up the other end.” The Bandits went to stumps at nine for 251 and will have a quick dash again next Sunday before they attempt to run through United’s batting order. Mareeba’s juniors were also in action at the weekend with the first day of a series of two day games being played. Mareeba’s Under 14s, coached by Bomber Adams are “getting a touch up” against Atherton, while the Under 16s also had the worst of the first day in their clash against Innisfail. David Thomas’ Under 14s are in a strong position in their two day game against Innisfail.

Nate Maisel played the anchor role in a 162 run stand with centurion Adam Roy Picture: Peter Roy

while Justin Mason got up two and one in a thriller. Mark Redding had a blinder, claiming his match by eight holes with seven left to play while Tenni lost five and three. Team captain Stuart said the win was a long time coming. “I’m the dedicated idiot that looks after the Pennants teams for something like 17 years now and it’d have to be about 12 years since our C Grade won it,” he said. “Today is really big for us, it isn’t often that we [smaller clubs] beat the ones from Cairns.” Mareeba Golf Club also qualified for the finals in the A Grade division but fell to Cairns Golf Club in a replay of last years final. Half Moon Bay Golf Club took out the B Grade crown. FNQ Golf Association match chairman Rob McVean said it was fantastic to see five clubs represented in the finals.

“This is a great competition because it brings all our clubs in the far north together for what is a unique style of golf,” he said. “To have five clubs qualify for finals this year is quite rare because usually we see all of the

Atherton claims Pennants crown By Ryan Groube Atherton’s golfers made the most of their home ground advantage, claiming their first FNQ Pennants C Grade crown in more than a decade on Saturday. The team: Noel Rawlins, Peter Fraser, Justin Mason, Mark Redding and Les Tenni, pictured right with Pennants captain John Stuart, held off a strong challenge from competition heavyweights Cairns Golf Club to claim the title. Players are eligible for C Grade if their handicap is 18 or above. In the Pennants competition a team of five players faces off against a player from the opposing team in a match play format. If a player wins a hole they go “one up”. Rawlins won his fixture after leading by four holes with three left to play, Fraser went down four and two

Cairns clubs make it to the end.” Mr McVean said the club’s at Atherton and Mareeba had done an “exceptional” job at hosting the finals and semi finals of the competition and congratulated the winners on their success.

Two Mareeba swimmers have fought past their disabilities to win financial grant awards from the Sporting Dreams Foundation. David Eade, 14 and Liza Jones, 40, were announced as winners of the awards on November 1 by the foundation, which was founded by Paralympian Marayke Jonkers and aims to support disabled athletes. The $250 grant awards will go toward travel and training costs for the two athletes and support their dreams of competing in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games Eade, who suffers from spina bifida, is already an established record-holding athlete at state level, blitzing the McDonalds Multi-Class Competition at Brisbane in 2011 and coming away with two silver and five bronze medals. He knocked 44 seconds off his best time for the 200-metre individual relay and would have most likely picked up a gold medal but missed the opening of the race. Jones, who now uses a wheelchair after contracting a rare disease called melioidosis, has recently started swimming and has shown considerable determination in learning new strokes and performing dive starts. The two train at Mareeba Swimming Pool under coach June Cotter, who told The Express the financial grants were an excellent step forward for the athletes. “It’s great to see people supporting these guys and showing everyone what they can do in the water,” she said. “David is amazing - he trains with able-bodied swimmers and he has to perform at the same standard as others, which shows where his determination is at. “It’s a bit harder for Liza because when she is training we have to decide together where her safe limits are, there is a risk of overtraining - but she has put in so much effort and particularly to be able to do dive starts so that is great to see her progress like that.”

THIS WEEKS DRAW This week see the concluding round of the Mareeba Summer Season fixtures, with the various Senior and Junior teams then preparing for the semifinals next week. Certainly the top placed teams going into the semi-finals have a distinct advantage of gaining a Grand Final position. Senior Ladies side Baiada Steggles are already assured of top position in their grade. While Bullets, Kangaroos and Taipans are strongly placed to lead the Junior Championship points table of their divisions. However tremendous interest centres on the last round of the Senior Mens fixtures. A 3 way tussle for the top placing has developed with Semi-Pros just a single point ahead of Lieutenant Dans, who in turn have a 1 point advantage over Stingrays. Local athletes ready for tilt at nationals By Boyd Robertson Three young Tableland Athletics Centre members have a shot at national-level school athletics finals in Townsville after coming home from state finals in Brisbane with stellar results. Tolga shotputter Tim Ford, 15, pictured right, Atherton hammer thrower Jennifer Moss 15 and Mt Garnet triple jumper Charles Rosas, 17, pictured left, all smashed their personal bests in performances at the Queensland Secondary School Athletics Track and Field Championships. The championships were held in Brisbane from October 24-27.

Ford won a gold medal on the opening day of competition, while Moss and Rosas came away with silvers. All three will head to Townsville on December 6 for the Australian All Schools Athletics Championships. Ford said he was “really happy” to qualify for the finals. “I’ve been putting in a lot of training and a lot of effort so it’s good to get this far - the last time I was at the finals was when I was 14 and I‘m looking forward to going again,” he said. “I’m a big believer in perseverance and I think that the effort you put in equals the result you get.

“Jennifer and Charles have also put in that really good effort and it’s going to be good going to Townsville with them.” Now that the Tableland Athletics Centre in Tolga has closed for summer, Ford trains with his father Andrew ahead of the Townsville finals. Despite his success, he sheepishly admits that he effectively fell into shotput. “To be honest I wasn’t really that good at anything else,” he said. “I just persevered with shotput and got better and better at it. “Dad’s definitely my main motivator, he’s always driving me forward.”

Netball president Martens reviews season 2013 By Connie Martens Mareeba Netball Association president

What a great year of achievements for players, coaches, and umpires for those in the Mareeba Netball Association in 2013. With 177 Mareeba Netball members, 160 junior members who play locally every Saturday, 17 team coaches, umpires and scorers it was a big year for players, parents and volunteers. This year Atherton junior netball also joined the competition with teams coming each week to play against Mareeba teams. With such a large number of players, parents were encouraged to take on the role of coaching even though some had never been involved with coaching before. This was daunting at first but with the support of the club some positive outcomes were reached by the end of the season. Mareeba teams travelled to carnivals throughout the region during the year and were successful with teams taking trophies home in many divisions. A big milestone in 2013 for the club was having a 15 Year Representative team compete in Townsville in the State Netball Queensland Sunshine Carnival. The girls performed well and were very competitive beating teams from other regional towns throughout Queensland. Mareeba finished third in their division and paved the way for more teams to travel next year. This year eight Mareeba Netballers were selected in the Regional Junior Marlins program. This program identifies players in the whole Marlin Coast Region to give them the opportunity to further develop their netball talents, with home programs and by attending leading athlete clinics. Congratulations to Justine Gatti, Ashlee Zugno, Sarrah Myrteza, Ryley Tilse, Zoe McDermott, Kura Pokoati, Elyse Miller, and Tahlia Avolio. Another exciting announcement for Mareeba Netball in 2013 was the selection of Tiahna Fegatilli and Harama and Mislaima Seve into the Netball Queensland Marlin Coast Regional Academy. Only a select group of players

across the Region were selected into this program and these young ladies have been working during the year with elite coaches and technical trainers. Both Harama and Missilaima attended the Netball Queensland Screening weekend in Brisbane in the September school holidays which gave them the opportunity for possible selection into the Under 17 State Team Squad. It was a great achievement for one of our Mareeba umpires, Louise Ebner who was awarded her All Australian Netball C Umpiring Badge. The hard work by Louise and the amount of Umpiring during the year both locally and throughout the region was rewarded. There were also some Junior players who took on the role of umpiring during the 2013 season. Junior umpires assisted in weekly games and taking teams to carnivals, there never seems to be enough umpires in netball but hopefully with the mentoring and umpiring experiences this year more can be convinced to give it a try. Mareeba Netball was involved with some major fundraising during the year, with the Cairns Triathlon and Mareeba Workers Club Bike Show. The funds raised will go back into the club for coaching and player development and necessary equipment for the new season. Furthermore the Mareeba Workers Club and Mareeba Lions made donations to the club for their ongoing efforts. I would like to take the opportunity to acknowledge the assistance of the community throughout the year especially the Mareeba State Primary School who allowed them to use the schools facilities each week and our major sponsor Hansen Ford and Mareeba Toyota who have again generously contributed during year. The Executive Committee would like to thank all those who worked tirelessly throughout the year and contributed to a successful 2013 season. The season culminated with Grand Finals and a Presentation Day in September with players receiving awards and trophies and volunteers who were rewarded for their efforts during the year. The Finals were exciting with

close games in both High school Divisions. Bumble Bees winning by two goals in extra time after the game ended in a draw after four quarters. Wombats who were the favourites going into the game narrowly defeated Majestix by one goal in the Division 1 game.

Esther Ratalatala was awarded 2013 Player of the Year. With netball now well established in Mareeba, this has also transposed into our school girls doing well at District and Peninsula School Competitions. This year we also had a number of Indigenous players travel to the Gold

Coast for the Australian/New Zealand Indigenous Games. Even though Mareeba Netball is in the off season planning is already underway for the 2014 season. A planning meeting was held recently with Member suggestions being considered for a bigger and better 2014.
