MSC happy with community cabinet By Carl Portella Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) Mayor Tom Gilmore and his entire team of councillors attended the recent community state cabinet meeting, to lobby Ministers for various infrastructure funding projects within the Mareeba jurisdiction. High on the agenda was the meeting with David Crisafulli, Minister for Local Government, Community Recovery and Resilience, in regard to the Mareeba waste water treatment plant upgrade; which is in much need of repair as identified by the MSC. Council spoke to Mr Crisafulli about funding the balance of the money needed to complete the

project. The other high profile agenda item was funding for the Mareeba airport. Approximately $12 million was originally funded by the previous Labor government, but was unceremoniously taken back by Campbell Newman’s LNP after the last election. Mayor Gilmore said: “We had very positive feedback, so we will be making applications for both these important projects under the new Smart Choices program for next year; so we will be moving very quickly to update our planning documents and get them away,” he said. “Whether we will be successful or not, we shall soon see.”

National Recover and Mining Minister Andrew Kripps came to the MSC’s party by gifting the shire land, which will then be used in reserve; some of the land in question is in Mareeba, Dimbulah and Chillagoe. Mr Gilmore added: “The minister fixed that and we are quite happy about it.” A meeting with the Assistant Minister for Public Transport Steve Minnikin also proved fruitful with council lobbing for more passing lane opportunities on the Mareeba to Kuranda section of the Kennedy Highway. He assured the Mayor that there would be some funding, and it would go ahead next year. This road upgrade will help with the early

morning and late afternoon traffic on the road, with the MSC having waited some time for funding for this section of highway. Mayor Gilmore also spoke about the Chillagoe Road and to have the section between Almaden and Chillagoe sealed; and was assured the sealing was on a four year forward program to be completed. “This will make an enormous difference to the lives of the people of Chillagoe; and will mean their tourism will grow tremendously as well,” he said. “So all in all we are happy with what we presented.” The Express will keep readers updated with these developments in the coming months.

A group of Mareeba youngsters were gobsmacked when they came across an enormous python while swimming in the Barron River near Mareeba last week. Measuring around five meters long, the python, which is a common species found on the Tablelands

and far northern region, was safely released back into the wild; after the boys took some snaps for their photo album. The reptile was so big, it took all three lads to hold it up while Ethan Miller took the photo. Brady McGrath contacted The Express to see if we were interested in running a story, which we accepted.

The photo of Brady, his mates Darren Low and Jamie Reichardt went up on our Facebook page and at the time of print, had broken all of our previous records as the following statistics show: Views 116,864, shares 1049, comments 1439 and 3778 likes. Many of our Facebook friends commented how surprised they were to see a reptile that big.

TWO local teachers’ aides have recently completed TAFE accreditation and look set for a bright future in education. Under the facilitation of Robyn Geraghty, Camilla Miles and Karen Madsen have successfully participated in the RATEP program. This program facilitates indigenous education students who are studying their Certificate III/IV in Education at TAFE or a Bachelor of Education through James Cook University in Townsville. Both successfully completed their study and spent 2014 working as teacher aides at Mareeba State School. Karen has worked as a teacher’s aide at both Mareeba State School and St Thomas’s Parish School and said she loved working with all of her students. “I love seeing their warm greetings in

the morning,” she said. “The enjoyment of seeing a student’s face when they get something right really is special.” In 2015, Karen said she would be keen to attend JCU and complete further study through a Bachelor of Education. After consultation with Mulungu staff, Camilla decided to commence the TAFE course and take part in the RATEP program. “I worked as a part-time teacher’s aide this year and really enjoyed it,” she said. “I really enjoy working with the children one on one and help them with their learning.” Mrs Geraghty said both ladies were tremendous role models for indigenous students in the school and was looking forward to another successful intake next year. “RATEP (along with Education Qld) is all about placing Indigenous/Torres Strait Island students into teaching,” she said.

TRC quash event permit By Justin Fris

AN application for a temporary event permit in Ravenshoe was quashed instantly by the Tablelands Regional Council (TRC) at last Thursday’s meeting. Proposed to be held between December 31-January 2, councillors spoke alarmingly about some 13,000 invitations which had been sent out via Facebook. Councillor Shaaron Linwood said the event was of ‘considerable concern’ and called for an alternative motion of not allowing the organisers a permit for the event. TRC Manager of Regulatory Services Kirsty Lamperd said that although her report suggested the permit be approved, she said her decision was an ‘extremely hard one’ to make. Ms Lamperd said emergency personnel had been briefed on the situation and strict guidelines were imposed; despite no council supervision during the event. “One of the organisers (Terry Kurnock) is very experienced and all of his events have run well,” she said. “The other organiser is a bit unproven, so we are not sure what to expect.” Despite their differences, councillors united in aid of residents in the region, who had voiced their concerns. TRC GM Community and Regional Planning Dean Davidson told the room he had visited with the event promoters the week before; and said they appeared to have no contingency plan if any sinister action occurred. Councillor Geoff Stocker was concerned about the address and expected attendance for the event. The alternative motion was carried unanimously throughout the room, with TRC CEO Ian Church and fellow councillors still respecting Ms Lamperd’s situation. High school ushers in new era of learning By Justin Fris SEVERAL local students got their first taste of secondary school education at Mareeba State High School last Wednesday. Changes to the schooling structure will see year seven students form part of our local high schools in 2015. And in a major boost for the Mareeba community, a series of upgrades and new facilities will greet students when they begin term one in the new year. Member for Cook David Kempton, who attended the transition session, said high school staff across the Tablelands had worked hard with all primary schools to make sure all students adapted to their new routine. “I’ve spoken to the local schools and I know they are ready and excited to wel-

come students and new teachers into the school community next year,” Mr Kempton said. “The students will benefit from facilities that have been specifically designed to create an inspiring and engaging learning environment.” The Express also had a chat with Deputy Principal Paul Charles, who said that the high school was ‘well and truly ready’ for the intake of new students. “It’s a very exciting time to see the first year 7s transition into Mareeba State High School,” he said. “There’s been a large amount of planning in the pipeline for the last couple of years and we are looking forward to welcoming them to our school.” Good luck to all year seven students in their new environment in 2015.

Qld government gets tough on e-cigarettes By Justin Fris

THE NEWMAN government has taken the lead from the WA state (Barnett) Liberal government and tightened Qld’s policy on e-cigarettes. Changes to the Tobacco Act will take effect from January 1, 2015, with the same restrictions of normal cigarettes now applying to the electronic form. The successful bill also means tobacco companies will be unable to market e-cigarette products in any way. Earlier in 2014, WA became the first jurisdiction in the world to outlaw the selling of e-cigarettes. Things eventually came to a head in April, when a Perth man was convicted of breaching the WA Tobacco Products Control Act, after an appeal on the man’s original acquittal from

the Barnett government’s health department was upheld. Cancer Council Qld Spokesperson Katie Cift welcomed the decision; by saying the decision was a step at reducing overall smoker numbers in the state. “These new laws are an important step toward a smoke free future, and another great step in ensuring the health and safety of Queenslanders in their local communities,” she said. “The laws will prevent e-cigarettes from being sold to children, ban their use in indoor or outdoor public places, and ensure no promotion or advertisement of the products in retail outlets.” There are currently over 500,000 adult smokers in Qld, with approximately 3000 people dying each year in our state from tobacco-related illnesses.

Work on the church’s refurbishment has been exceptional.

Church helps jobless By Justin Fris

A local Kuranda church has done its bit to help reduce unemployment within the area; with the social benefits continuing to filter through. Today’s (December 10) opening of a refurbished Seventh Day Adventist church will be special; not only for those involved by religion, but those through local culture and many committed to employment. Commencing earlier in April of this year, a Newman government program (Remote Jobs Communities Program) saw 68 locals take part in assisting with construction and upgrading of the facility; with 35 of them gaining employment off their hard work. Some of these activities included realigning of the ceiling, constructing new amenities, along with a new timber feature at the entry. The venue looks set to entice new functions in

2015; along with traditional weddings, markets and even dance lessons. Seventh Day Adventist President Judith Enoch said she fully supported all of the job seekers who participated in the program. “I completely support the training of Jobfind participants who have sought to develop this important facility,” she said. “The entire community has been able to benefit directly or indirectly by the input and improvements made to the existing infrastructure.” RJCP Manager Robert Howard said reducing unemployment in the Kuranda region has been a major coup for the region. “Reducing unemployment was an important achievement from this project,” he said. “However, the social benefits are long-term and will continue to contribute to the well-being and economic development of the entire community.”

After years of frustration, both farmers and transport operators are exhilarated to learn that the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Kuranda is now open to B Doubles without restriction. Member for Cook David Kempton said: “When I first learned of this, I could not believe the inconvenience and cost involved in uncoupling loading and re-coupling. “I have been working for some time to rectify this problem and thank Department of Transport and Main Roads for their support in finding a resolution. “I am sure the farmers and truckies agree this is a great outcome.” Mareeba and District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association/ Mareeba Chamber of Commerce President Joe Moro said: “The In-

dustry, David Kempton, the Mareeba Shire Council and the Chamber have been working together on this and it is a very good step forward,” he said. “Transporters will now save around 2 hours on a round trip and this will also highlight the importance of the Cairns- Mareeba road; we also hope in the near future to have more passing lanes on the Kennedy Highway.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said: “We were approached by the transport industry to support the extension for B-Doubles on the Kennedy Highway. “We are happy that there was a positive outcome, however the transport industry needs to find a suitable location for a pad the trucks can use. “The council can’t help them in that area. “They will need to source some

funds to build the pad and there are some sites around the Koah area that may be suitable.” A Transport and Main Roads spokesperson informed The Express that: “Following requests from agricultural industries on the Tablelands, we have gazetted the Kennedy Highway between Mareeba and Speewah Road as a B-double route. “This will enable greater freight efficiency for the industry between the Tablelands and the coast. “Local roads on this section are already designated as Type 1 road train routes; these provide existing turnaround areas which heavy vehicles can use for decoupling. “As such we have no plans to provide unhitching pads for B-doubles on this section of road.” Well done to all stakeholders who lobbied hard.

TRC Councillor response to draft plan I would like to correct an article in The Express 3/12/14, in relation to a proposed change to a draft Tablelands Regional Council planning scheme, which seems to indicate that I have supported Councillor Hodge in his initial proposal for Robert and Evans Streets in Atherton to be placed in the Town Centre Fringe precinct. This is far from the truth of the matter, the actual resolution I supported was completely different to Cr Hodge’s initial proposal, and was simply that the levels of assessment for the Medium Density Residential Zone which covers the Robert/ Evans Street area, be amended to include Community Care Centre as self-assessable development for that area. As I was quoted in the article, I believe this motion gave a far better outcome than placing this area in a Town Centre Fringe precinct, and causing further fragmentation of the already struggling Town Centre in Atherton. Cr Shaaron Linwood, Atherton

Council Pensioner Rental Charges Mareeba Shire Council are increasing the rental on their pensioner cottages by (on average, $28.00 per week in February 2015 and then again by (on average) $28.00 per week in August 2015. My calculation shows that this is an increase of (average) $56 per week within 6 months. This is based on one Real Estate’s valuation of these cottages. I rang the council about this. I expressed my feelings that the rental increases for these cottages seemed to be a bit high and that council rental costs are intended to be lower than that of a private rental. The response was that they are. My rental will be $20.00 per week less than private rental in August 2015, according to the real estate business they hired. Another response was that the “Pensioners have had it too good.” Yes, rental allowance will go up and yes, pensions have increased, but nowhere near the amount of the new rental increases. Many of these cottages have had improvements made by pensioners at their own expense for more comfortable living in their retirement. I wonder if the Council has taken that into consideration when calculating these increases. I think the Council should take another look at these increases.

Strange that the last large increase (average $20.00 per week) was done when Mr Tom Gilmore was Mayor of TRC; and now another large increase occurs when he is MSC Mayor. C. Shaw, Mareeba

Ignorance is bliss? I was so sad to read of the ignorance and bigotry that apparently prevailed at the meeting for the proposed new multi faith boarding school in Mareeba. While no doubt some fare questions were asked – it appears from “The Express article” it certainly brought out the bigots in force. Having spent a great deal of my adult life working and travelling in countries of every faith, I believe exposure to all cultures and religions is the only way forward for a world at peace. How can the world come together if we follow our “ Attorney General’s” belief that “everyone has the right bigotry”! Good luck to ‘SBA Holdings’, and their “international boarding school” – next one for girls? Myra McLeod, Mount Molloy

ABC and SBS cuts will filter through to us I am deeply concerned about the impact Tony Abbott’s cuts to ABC and SBS will have on people living in Mareeba and the region. Since these cuts have been announced, my office has been taking calls every day from people telling me how much they rely on the ABC for their local news and current affairs, along with the morning and drive-time shows; and how angry they are at the Abbott Government for breaking a promise not to cut funding from the ABC and SBS. Mr Abbott’s assault on the public broadcaster means 400 people will lose their jobs and the future of local news services is up in the air. We know already that the very much loved Bush Telegraph radio program will go at Christmas. The Queensland 7.30 Report on Friday nights will be cancelled. This edition is valued by people in the Far North as it provided analysis of current affairs at a State level, but also provided the opportunity for our local stories to be aired to an audience across the State.

But the strongest concerns have been expressed by people worried about how the ABC will manage emergency service broadcasts following these cuts to the ABC’s funding. During and following the all too frequent cyclones we endure, we are dependent on our ABC for accurate and timely information and advice. This cannot be compromised in any way. People are rallying right around the country to protest these cuts and I urge residents of the Mareeba region to make a stand too. Jan McLucas, Labor Senator for Queensland

Sincere thanks to our volunteers As International Volunteer Day fell on December 5 in the midst of both bushfire and storm and cyclone season, there is no more important time to acknowledge the contribution of volunteers to the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) and the wider community. To say that we could not deliver emergency response to Queenslanders in the same way without volunteers is no overstatement. As grass fires ravage landscapes, Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) volunteers are leaving their day jobs and families to protect others’ lives and properties. When storms cause damage and flooding in streets, State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers are out in force. Our volunteers take many different forms, from front line roles to those working behind the scenes making sure communities are educated, training is up to scratch, responding crews and units are fed, forms are completed and minutes are taken. I want to extend my sincere thanks to the more than 40,000 volunteers across all of our divisions. Your commitment, dedication and unreserved willingness to sacrifice your time and effort for your communities are sincerely appreciated. I encourage all Queenslanders to show your appreciation for volunteers by sharing a message on the QFES Facebook page (www.facebook.com/QldFireandRescueService) or tweet us (@QldFES). Include your location and we’ll make sure volunteers from your community receive the message. Lee Johnson, QFES Commissioner

The face behind the Facebook page “Stop the $70M Islamic boarding school” was revealed on Saturday, December 6, at the Mareeba Bowls club. Kim Vuga from Townsville, who is one of the Administrators of the page, organized two meetings in the Far North for those against the building of the Standard Bearers Academy boarding college in Mareeba. The Grandmother of four was happy with the Cairns meeting which took place on Saturday December 5, at the Stratford bowls club. Just over 65 supporters attended, however those that did attend were disappointed that the meeting failed to set up a steering committee with no one wanting to take on the responsibility. From 7000 Mareeba residents, just over 100 were on hand at the Mareeba meeting and before the information session began Kim asked that anyone who was ‘not’ against the school to either leave or sit quietly: no one left. After outlining the reason behind the Facebook

page and why it was created the meeting proved a little more successful as two residents came forward to fill positions. Allan Webb accepted the roll of Chairperson and spokesperson while Irene Timpone was assigned the dual role of Secretary and Treasurer. Both will be entrusted to oversee that Mareeba residents are kept informed on the progress of the proposed boarding college. The committee will liaise with the Facebook admin staff to continue the move to halt the school, from being built. Comments made at the meeting suggested that the Mareeba Islamic Society were againist the school, but speaking with The Express, Sam Adil, President of the Mareeba Islamic Society said, “We have not had any correspondence with the organisers of the school, it has not been discussed with our committee and we have not been advised of what is being proposed, all we know is what is in the papers.” “We have not been asked to support the project, however there are some members who believe this is not a good thing.”

Carols bring joy to children THE annual Carols in the Park may have turned into Carols in the Hall on Sunday night, but it didn’t dampen the Christmas spirit of Mareeba families. After a severe thunderstorm hit the area on Saturday night and with predicted wet weather on Sunday night, organisers made the decision to change the popular event indoors. More than 600 people packed into the Mareeba PCYC Hall for a night of Christmas carols, performances from local children and a visit from Santa. All proceeds from candle sales on the evening will go to the Mareeba Shire Council ‘Mayors Christmas Appeal’ to help those less fortunate this Christmas. The Atherton Tablelands Carols by Candlelight were also held at the weekend on Saturday night, December 6, at the Atherton Showgrounds.

Mayor Ernie Camp, Deputy Mayor Paul Poole and Chief Executive Officer Phillip Keirlie congratulate the Chimpaka family on becoming Australian citizens.

Burke Shire welcomes new Australian citizens THREE new Australian citizens were welcomed into the Burke Shire community at a recent citizenship ceremony. Burke Shire Mayor Ernie Camp was in attendance and was warmly received by friends and family who were in attendance. Mayor Camp said the ceremony was the beginning of a new journey for the trio. “Today is a special day and we are very honoured that you have decided to

become citizens of Australia and residents of the region,” he said. Simbarashe Chimpaka (who originally is from Zimbabwe) said he was very honoured to be accepted as a new Australian citizen. “"I am very happy to officially be made an Australian,” he said. “They promised me a BBQ to celebrate in true Aussie style.”

Community Creative coordinators – Glenda Jumelet, Samantha Fergusson and Margy Corbett – with some items already submitted for sale through the Community Creative shop.

RAVENSHOE is set to benefit from an exciting new community based project, which will fuel the Tablelands’ creative streak. Through an initiative by the Rainbow Catcher Foundation, the project is calling on all individuals with nous for creative activity to submit their work for display. Several coordinators will facilitate the project; and believe viewing of items should commence just prior to Christmas. The event has received backing from two internationally recognised artists, which should in term shine a major spotlight on the town. Based along the main street, coordinators have already received submissions; but are keen for any of the

following to be added to the list: benches, furniture, chairs, paintings or pottery items. Rainbow Catcher Foundation Founder Erica West said people from southern regions had already posted items up for donation, even as far afield as Sydney. “The project is entirely volunteer-based and we are hoping all regions can be a part of it,” she said. “We’ve asked that 20% of proceeds from every sale go towards the RCF, which will be used to further assist our local community initiatives.” Some of these initiatives include generating further adequate accommodation options, along with various programs to benefit the elderly community.

Remote FNQ ‘fattest region’ in Qld AND we’re staying open until 4pm on the following Saturdays

REMOTE citizens in Cape York and the Torres Strait have been diagnosed as the fattest region in our state; with one in every three people classed as obese. Furthermore, Qld’s state-wide obesity rate is almost identical to the United States’ obesity rate. The region ranked last in three major health outcomes (obesity, preventable hospitalisations and smoking) in Qld; which make for damning reading for citizens and health officials alike. Findings in the survey determined for every 100 hospitalisations in the region, 13 could have been prevented. Locally, Torres/Cape Hospital and Health Service Acting Chief Executive Ian Pressley was clearly alarmed by the figures and urged people to carefully monitor their lifestyle choices. “This puts them at much greater risk of conditions like cardiovascular disease and diabetes,” he said. “I encourage everyone to be more active, eat healthier and make small changes to improvetheir health.” Obesity and smoking rates were up to 65% higher

The last edition of The Express in 2014 will be

in the Cape York and Torres Strait regions than in other parts of the state. In handing down her ‘2014 Qld Health Report- The Health of Queenslanders’, Dr Jeannette Young said that marginal improvement had been made since 2012, but the numbers were still exorbitant. “More than half of Queensland’s population; twothirds of adults and a quarter of children - are overweight or obese,” she said. “We have the sad mantle of being the ‘heaviest’ state in Australia.” Member for Cook David Kempton said the report was also a ‘wake up call for me’, with the local member often putting his own health second. “I have put my health second to the busy demands of my electorate and parliament,” he said. “I encourage everyone to take a moment to reassess the current level of their health; and consider what they might be able to do themselves to improve it.”

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year to all!

entertainment

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS The holidays are almost here and there's plenty of movie magic on the way at The Rising Sun Cinema, in Mareeba. Starting this Thursday is the lovely and very entertaining PADDINGTON, bringing to life the lovable but mischievous bear. It is really funny and is good family “feel good” entertainment. Nicole Kidman and Julie Walters put in guest appearances. It's at the Rising Sun at the same time as the rest of Australia, so come see it on your local big screen.

There's also heaps of fun and great merriment in ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD, VERY BAD DAY. You'll laugh at this family's really bad day. There's even a kangaroo in the cast. There's also one last chance to catch HUNGER GAMES MOCKINGJAY PART 2, and LET'S BE COPS this Wednesday, December 10. Remember, there's heaps of extra shows as it's holiday time – check the ad for all the session times.

PADDINGTON

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift reflects on the highlights of cancer control in Far North Queensland during 2014 and heralds new hope for 2015.

Thank you Far North Queensland – together we are saving lives

A young English boy befriends a talking bear he finds at a London train station. A live-action feature based on the series of popular children's books by Michael Bond. A young Peruvian bear with a passion for all things British travels to London in search of a home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington Station, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined - until he meets the kindly Brown family, who read the label around his neck ('Please look after this bear. Thank you.') and offer him a temporary haven. It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist.

2014 has been a busy year for Cancer Council Queensland in Far North Queensland. Our Helpline and cancer support staff reached out to many local patients and families, providing information, advice, assistance, and referrals. Our researchers examined Queensland-specific trends and patterns, leading the state in our work to better understand the factors that influence local cancer incidence and survival.

ALEXANDER AND THE TERRIBLE, HORRIBLE, NO GOOD,VERY BAD DAY

For 12 year old Alexander Cooper, everyday is a bad day. And his family thinks he's being silly because they never have a bad day. On the day before his 12th birthday party, he learns that another boy is having a party of his own and everyone is going to it. And another kid punks him online. So at midnight of his birthday, he wishes that his whole family can have a bad day. And things for the whole family go bad, his mom's car is broken so they have to share a car, his sister has a cold and has to go on stage, his older brother, who's hoping to get his driver's license and to bring his girlfriend to the prom, has to deal with his girlfriend's snootiness and fails to get his license, his mom has a crisis at work which could cost her her job, and his dad who has a job interview has to bring his younger brother with him but because his pacifier is broken he can't stop crying. Alex feels responsible.

Our public health team mobilised action on the frontlines of cancer control, promoting prevention, early detection, education and community awareness. We invested around $14 million in cancer research, responded to 19,500 calls, and accommodated nearly 4,000 regional Queenslanders in one of our six statewide lodges. And we couldn’t have done it without you! With the festive season fast approaching, we now look forward to making an even greater difference in 2015. Next year, more than 1200 Far

North Queenslanders will be diagnosed with cancer. A donation of just $50 can help to provide a wig for a patient undergoing chemotherapy. A donation of $100 can help to fund counselling for a family who has been impacted by the disease. And a donation of $1,000 can help to fund life-saving clinical trials, providing cancer patients in Far North Queensland with access to promising new treatments. Thank you once again for your support of our work during 2014. Together we are creating hope for a cancer free future. On behalf of Cancer Council Queensland, we wish Far North Queenslanders a healthy, happy, and safe holiday season. If you or someone you know is affected by cancer this Christmas, please call us on 13 11 20. We’re always here to help. The LAND Qualicado workshop a bright success By Justin Fris LOCAL avocado growers were given a real treat last Thursday, with Giovanni Ravenello (Gunnado Farm) playing host to the North Queensland Growers’ ‘Qualicado’ workshop. A wide range of keynote speakers attended the event, which kicked off around 8.30am; with the temperature nudging 30 degrees. Avocados Australia CEO John Tyas addressed the group throughout the day and also spoke with The Express about his overall assessment of the day. “The ‘Qualicado’ program is all about meeting with local growers and retailers,” he said. “We get to share best practice concepts, along with information on how to successfully manage your orchard.” Mr Tyas outlined the importance

of summer for the avocado; with over 65,000t sold last year alone (which was up from 48,000t in 2012). Avocados Australia Chairman Jim Kochi also spent time with The Express, outlining the ‘ideal’ avocado ahead of the festive season. “An ideal avocado should be ripe to eat and have a good flavour,” he said. “Along with this, it should have minimal defects, and solid internal quality.” Mareeba District Fruit and Vegetable Growers Association President Joe Moro said overall fruit and vegetable consumption can rise over the festive period; and these workshops can CONTRACT FRUIT PACKING be extremely beneficial for local farmers. MSF Sugar joins Rotary FNQ Field Days ONE of Far North Queensland’s leading sugar millers, MSF Sugar, has joined the Rotary FNQ Field Days as a strategic partner. The company’s support for the largest field day in region is a part of MSF Sugar’s long-term commitment to the community and Far North Queensland. MSF Sugar Tableland Mill Superintendent Pat Ryan said involvement with the bi-annual field day was a positive way to further demonstrate MSF Sugar’s faith in the region and in agriculture. “At MSF Sugar, we are passionate about agriculture on the Tablelands,” Mr Ryan said. “It is the lifeblood of this region and we are proud that the Tableland cane industry alone brings more than $50 million to the local economy each year. “Our sugar mill is the most modern one in the world. “It operates at high efficiency due to the major upgrades we put in place and the future for the industry

Charity match raises money for local cricket

LOCAL professionals united recently in a bid to raise funds for local cricketers in the Mareeba area. A wonderful time was had by all during the match and $550 was raised overall. As you can tell from the following picture, both sides left nothing in the tank. The ‘Tradies’ team eventually got home by a few runs.

By Justin Fris TENNIS in Mareeba reached its crescendo last Saturday, with the Mareeba Tennis Club celebrating the success of its finest junior players. A total of 34 players sneakered up during the season, with three separate competitions giving all players an opportunity to improve their skills. The Express spoke with Carolyn, who oversees coaching at junior level. She said all players had a wonderful season and that they played with the right attitude. “We are hosting a junior camp right after the Australian Open in January,” she said. “Hopefully this can spike participation rates into next season.” Her passion for the game is unquestionable; together with co-coach Li Bor, the pair have instilled a positive, yet determined

LOCAL boxing official Ross Cardillo has experienced the sport of boxing across a multitude of levels; and is now Boxing Australia’s Head Referee/ Judge for FNQ. When most people think of boxing, many fail to look beyond the vision in front of them; boxing is a mixed science of agility and mental toughness, rather than two people simply punching each other. The same applies to referees. One does simply not stand in the ring and casually oversee two primed athletes releasing fury on each other. “The safety of the boxer is always paramount for me, along with any decent referee,” Cardillo said. “Before any fight, I will speak to both of the fighters and give them clear instructions on how the fight will be officiated.” Cardillo added that he will do research before each bout on both fighters; and will make sure novice fighters have complete understanding on what is required of them.

mentality in all of the players. In the Division 1 finals, Jered Price was too good against Harry Heath in the ladder singles final, while Ben Hollins needed a tiebreaker victory to shrug off a relentless Nicholas Duncan. Division 2 provided two tighter affairs, with Michael Martin holding off Anton Prizmic in a thrilling finish. In the playoff for 3rd place, Kaelon Mulla defeated Morgan Grimshaw in a tight encounter, 6-4. In junior matches, players play only one set, with the first player to six games deemed the winner of the match. After the finals were decided, several other special awards were handed out to players who had made a great impact to their coach. Special recognition should go to Morgan Grimshaw and Mia Costas, who were voted ‘Most Improved’ in 2014. Well done to all players on a wonderful season.

Controlled emotion is also an imperative trait that any referee should possess; along with being able to judge if a fight needs to be stopped. “In some cases, I actually have stepped in and stopped a fight,” he said. “At the end of the day, it’s all about safety, particularly with kids.” While in discussion, Mills Lane’s performance during the infamous Mike Tyson versus Evander Holyfield bout in 1997 was highlighted as a prime example of a referee who could handle any situation. This notion was agreed upon, with Cardillo explaining that most referees will watch major international bouts and observe techniques which can be adopted into their personal style. With the emergence of Macau as an ideal destination for major fights, Cardillo said he was keen to earn his professional refereeing accreditation; which would provide greater flexibility for promoters bringing quality bouts to the Asia/Pacific (including FNQ) region.

Local schools combine for sporting showcase By Justin Fris

ANNUAL rivalries were renewed between Mareeba State and St Thomas’s Parish schools last Tuesday, with a series of netball and rugby league matches determining the latest winners of prestige silverware. As the clock nudged 12.15pm with thick grey cloud engulfing the sky, St Thomas’s ran eagerly into position to face their state school opponents in the first league contest of the day. The battle for the Chris Shepherd Cup is always keenly fought between both schools; with the inclusion of several Northern Pride academy players ensuring the crowd saw some quality play. Mareeba State Coach Luke Cifuentes cut a serious figure as he addressed his team moments before the opening kick-off. He spoke of the need to enforce structure from the opening set of six; along with asking his forwards to run wider, in a bit to create holes in the St Thomas’s defensive line. Clearly Cifuentes’ boys listen to their coach; as it only took them three tackles on the opening set to score the first try of the match. After spilling the opening kick-off, St Thomas’s were caught out wide along the classroom touchline and Mareeba State was able to cross with minimal resistance. St Thomas’s endeavour throughout the early stages was undeniable; even though lacking in size and faced against several representative players, they toiled bravely and never dropped their heads or became ill-disciplined. Mareeba halfback Trezman Banjo was on another level out in the middle, but he shared the ball with teammates at all times; despite many opportunities to run the length of the field himself. Trailing 18-0 after the opening 10 minutes, St Tho-

mas’s finally got the opportunity to have an attacking set near the Mareeba State try line. The hosts threw caution to the wind and began to expand their passing; throwing it around with ease and catching the defence unawares at times. An unfortunate bounce was the only thing that kept the home side from opening their account on the stroke of half time. Banjo and Simisi Seiki added two further tries for the visitors in the second half to make the score 32-0; but this was the end of their scoreboard pressure for the afternoon. St Thomas’s dominated possession in the final 10 minutes of the game and were rewarded for their persistence with consecutive sets. At full-time, players from both hands shook hands and embraced sportsmanship; something that many older kids sometimes forget to display. It was then time for the girls to showcase their ability on the rugby league field, with the passion evident before the match. St Thomas’s again began brightly, but lacked an attacking threat on the final tackle of their sets. At the other end, livewire Esther Ratalatala made the game her own. After crossing for her first try (two overall) and making the score 12-0, St Thomas’s had their first purple patch of the game; and were duly rewarded early in the second half with a try. A final penalty goal was added by the visitors to make the final score 14-4, but score didn’t reflect the effort that the home side put in. St Thomas’s held all the aces in the netball however, trouncing the visitors 16-0. The Express would like to congratulate everyone who took part on the day and would like to wish everyone all the best for the festive break.

A St Thomas’s forward meets a brick wall.

Torrential downpour drenches pitch

Cotter ushers in new era for Mareeba swimming, with second Borzi Shield win in 20 years The Kerribee Park pitch was deemed unplayable, despite solid efforts by local groundstaff. By Justin Fris

TORRENTIAL rain ruined any opportunity for Mareeba and Tully to commence their semi final last Sunday at Kerribee Park. A total of 78mm of rain soaked Mareeba’s township to the skin last Saturday night; and left Club President Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams and his groundstaff with a mammoth challenge. From 6.30am in the morning, Adams and his team worked feverously in a bid to dry out both pitch and the outfield in time for a 9.30am pitch inspection. Unfortunately for both sides, water had seeped

through the pitch covers during the night, which made the wicket potentially dangerous for play. Tully officials and players were notified of the inspection decision well ahead of time, so they weren’t left stranded mid-transit. Despite overall disappointment, the Bandits bowling attack wasn’t content with having a day off; taking to the nets and having a solid session under intense humidity. Bandits Captain Brendan Payne said the match format would revert to 30 overs a side- which would reconfigure how both sides will tactically approach the game. With a shorter game length this Sunday, supporters should look forward to big shots and attacking cricket from both sides, in quest of a win. June Cotter (far left) has instigated a resergence in Mareeba swimming.

Help local rugby to greener pastures By Justin Fris

A simple click on your computer could help a local rugby union club improve its playing field for next season. The Tablelands Rugby Union Club is keen to restructure the irrigation operation of its playing field; so watering can occur more regularly and the overall state of the field will be in line with other clubs in the league. Club officials have applied to the Philmac Project,

who provides grants of up to $5000 to assist rural community facilities. But without community support, the project will not see the light of day. Should the club’s bid be successful, it will be shortlisted and judged upon by a dedicated panel. MAREEBA has broken its Borzi Shield drought, after accounting for fellow Tablelands rivals Atherton, Dimbulah and Malanda at the recent championship meet. It was only their second shield victory in 20 years, but local coach June Cotter said it was a tremendous result for a team which had stuck together. Mareeba’s victorious squad was:

Nicole Theakston, Alaina Smith, Nadia Falvo, Danika Prismic, Finn Weaver, Michael Quintieri, Hayden Reppell, and Joshua Theakston. “They have all worked really hard this year,” she said. “I tweaked the training regime a bit and the workload of our group intensified; but it has all paid off in the end.” Cotter added her swimmers typically undertook 6-8 sessions per week, with many doing extra sessions.
