Will Billy resign?

By Carl Portella

The recently elected Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, wasn’t a household name before the state election on January 31; but now it seems everyone in the state knows who Billy Gordon is, but for all the wrong reasons. Events unfolded on the morning of Friday March 27, at Parliament House in Brisbane, after Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk received a letter from Mr Gordon’s former partner accusing him of failing to lodge tax returns in order to escape child support payments. The letter was also sent to a number of ministers including: Housing and Public Works Minister, Leanne Enoch and Communities, Women, Youth and Child Safety Minister, Shannon Fentiman. In parliament the Member for Cook said: “I bear full responsibility for my actions; unfortunately, the relationship did not end on a positive note. “It was an extremely upsetting period after which I independently sought counselling. “As a result, I have moved to immediately rectify my tax affairs; and I have also ensured that any outstanding child support payments have been made to my ex-partner, so that I can put this issue beyond doubt.

“It upsets me to stand in this house and divulge details of such a personal nature to members. I am a proud father; it is the most important job I will ever do. “I am also extremely humbled to be representing the good people of the great electorate of Cook.” On Friday evening, allegations deepened, after it was made public on cairnsnow.com website that Mr. Gordon had been abusive towards his former partner. In light of these allegations,Premier Palaszczuk, who holds a minority government with the support of independent Peter Wellington, asked Police Commissioner Ian Stewart to investigate the matter. The State Opposition has called on the Premier to release all correspondence from her office relating to serious allegations against the Member for Cook to provide a full explanation of the circumstances. Deputy Premier John-Paul Langbroek said the curious handling of the issue raised even more concern. “From what the government has said so far, the Premier’s first move was to run off to the union bosses at Labor Headquarters and wipe her hands of the problem,” he said. “This is not just about the character of the Member for Cook, but also the credibility of Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk.” Mr Langbroek said regardless of what decision the Premier made about the future of the Member for Cook, serious questions needed to be asked about what really happened. “Queenslanders deserve to know exactly what has happened behind the scenes.” The question being asked by The Express Facebook friends is: Why was all this not picked up before the election on January 31? Why not indeed. Questions also need to be asked as to why Mr Gordon was not properly investigated in Labor’s pre-selection process to ascertain as to whether or not he was a suitable candidate. Premier Palaszczuk should also come under scrutiny for not raising the abuse allegations in parliament on Friday, knowing full well the contents of the letter which she received on March 18; and only sending the case to the police commissioner after the allegations were made public. At a noon press conference on Sunday March 29, the Premier said: “Today I am prepared to put my premiership on the line. “This is a very serious issue. I spoke to the Member for

Cook. I told him very clearly that today I would be writing to the state secretary to expel him from the state Labor party. “Secondly, I told the Member for Cook he would not be sitting with the state Labor parliamentary team. I also told the Member for Cook, in the best interests of the party, in the best interests of the parliament and in the best interests of Queensland, he should resign as a member of parliament and that his position was untenable.” She added Mr Gordon had let her down, the party down and the government down and this was one of the hardest calls she has had to make. “I am shocked, appalled and I feel sick in the stomach,” Premier Palaszczuk said. “There will be a thorough review of the pre-selection process.” This came hours after Mr Gordon apologized to the people of Cook and made a full confession about his criminal past in a message to his Facebook friends. Part of the statement read: “My contact with the criminal justice system has included: Breaking entering and stealing in 1987 in Innisfail, breaking and entering with intent, attempted breaking and entering and stealing in 1990 in Atherton, breach of probation in 1992 in Atherton, public nuisance in 1996 in Normanton, breach of bail conditions in 1999 (stemming from not attending a court summons from the 1996 incident). In addition I have twice had my driver’s license suspended for unlicensed driving (2004 and 2008). Finally, in 2008, I was served with an (AVO) Apprehended Violence Order as a result of a complaint by my mother.” In further developments later that evening, Mr Gordon took to Facebook stating: “I am presently weighing up my options after the advice I have received from the Premier that she has asked for my expulsion from the Labor Party. “I am very concerned that I should be afforded natural justice in any determination that my tenure as the Member for Cook should be terminated because of her move to see me expelled from the Labor Party and her wish for me to resign as a Member of Parliament. “Any other attempt to remove me from the Parliament and force me to resign is a denial of natural justice.” Queenslanders are in for an interesting time in state politics in the coming weeks, the decision voters await now is: Will Mr Gordon resign? Mr Gordon concluded by stating he will make no further media comment until his decision has been finalised.

Chocolate rain in Kuranda

The Easter egg drop is always a massive hit for local children who attend the event.

KURANDA will be awash with chocolate on Easter Saturday, with the famed ‘Easter in the Park’ set to again be a hit with families. Held between 10am and 4pm in Centenary Park, the day will feature the popular Easter egg drop; with 11,000 eggs being released from a crane between 11am and 2pm. Tourism Kuranda Executive Officer Marc Sleeman said there will be something for everyone, irrespective of your chocolate preference. “This year we have set aside a special area for children aged five and under to ensure they get to meet the Easter Bunny and receive chocolate eggs separately from the crowd,” he said. “We have four animal attractions in the heart of the village – the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, Birdworld Kuranda, Kuranda Koala Gardens and the Australian Venom Zoo – plus Rainforestation Nature Park nearby. “There are plenty of native animals including crocodiles, cassowaries and wombats plus a few exotic ones like Tasmanian tigers for the kids to see. “Wander throughout the village to see inside a beehive, stand beside a dinosaur skeleton or take a river cruise to spot freshwater crocodiles and turtles in the Barron River.” Local indigenous culture will also healthily be represented on the day, with the Pagamirri aboriginal dancers performing for the crowd. Along with the usual array of food, drink, face painting and bouncy castles to keep the kids entertained, there will also be a whip cracking demonstration, magic show and sack races.

Credibility overhaul

‘This council has failed the community’

By Justin Fris

COUNCILLOR Rod Marti has questioned the operational credibility of the current Tablelands Regional Council, in the aftermath of the contentious theatre lease ruling on March 20. Despite all councillors being provided with clear report recommendations from their own officers, councillors voted 4-3 for an alternative motion, which was put forward by Cr Peter Hodge. The alternative motion gives the APA an interim-based user agreement, until a 10x10 year lease is finalised. Cr Marti said he believed the TRC had failed the community and components of due diligence and transparency were effectively ignored.

“This council has refused to take its own professional advice and proceed with a full and detailed report in relation to the development of the Silo shopping precinct; and a possible relocation of the APA,” he said. “This (TRC) council has failed this community by not doing its job, by not commissioning a detailed report that explores all options for all stakeholders. “Due diligence and transparency processes, both of which are pillars of good governance, have been completely bypassed. “By choosing not to consider and investigate the genuine offer by Tableland Investments, as any other local government authority would do routinely, the council is saying that expansion of the town’s newest commercial precinct is not up

for discussion.” Cr Marti concluded by questioning the longterm future and vision of the Atherton township. “Council has failed a second due diligence test in its motion to award a 10 x 10 year lease to the APA in the existing igloo facility. “Despite TI’s offer of $200,000 to council to assist with finding the APA a new home, council has opted to leave a structure that’s considered unfit for purpose by current standards, as well as commit our performing arts facility to be forever surrounded by asphalt. “Where are the benefits for the community in any of these decisions? Why has due diligence and transparency been denied on this occasion? Where is the long term future? Where is the vision for our town?

Mayor Lee Long defends TRC over theatre vote By Justin Fris

TABLELANDS Regional Council Mayor Rosa Lee Long said she is confident the TRC is heading in the right direction, despite facing some massive challenges. The latest challenge, a decision (by an alternative motion) to issue the Atherton Performing Arts theatre with a new 10x10 year lease, has polarised certain councillors and representatives. Cr Rod Marti went on record by saying the TRC had failed the local community; and that due diligence had been ignored on the matter. Mayor Lee Long was quick to disagree with Cr Marti’s statement, saying council

had provided several opportunities for the APA and Tableland Investments to negotiate an equitable outcome. “Council has not failed the community,” she said. “The TRC has provided repeated opportunities for TI and the APA to present directly to council and provide any and all information they wished. “Only after this had happened, was the matter taken to a vote. That, to me, seems entirely appropriate.” Both the APA and Tableland Investments presented their qualms to councillors prior to the meeting, which Mayor Lee Long believes were taken into account. “Council has not compromised itself at all,” she said.

SIMCRAFT

“As he (Cr Marti) himself admits, council has heard directly from Tableland Investments. In fact, there have been three presentations from them; two in open council and one in confidential. “So there has been ample opportunity for them to detail their proposal, raise and address issues and communicate directly with Councillors. “Officers did recommend a further report however, given that both sides had been able to address Council both as a group, and I believe have also had personal discussions with individual councillors, I see nothing at all untoward in Council accepting a resolution providing a 10x10 year lease to APA.”

Representatives then entered into a purchase arrangement with Christians from three other protestant denominations. This purchase was officially recognised at the Mareeba Court House on March 12, 1895, with this date being the earliest confirmed date of registered activity. The church building was known as the United Church, a commonly used designation that was used at the time for Christian denominations in rural areas, who shared premises. By 1956, the three other denominations had either ceased to exist in Mareeba or had moved out to their own facility. The Mareeba Presbyterian congregation paid 2300 pounds to buy out interests in the United Church of the last denomination to move out; and so the grounds and buildings came into sole possession of the congregation.

Mareeba’s Presbyterian charge functioned until April 30, 2007, when the Presbytery North Queensland component of the Presbyterian Church of Queensland voted to close the charge. The MPC then became a preaching place of the Tablelands Presbyterian Charge, under the jurisdiction of the Tablelands Kirk Session, which eventually closed the Mareeba preaching place on June 8, 2008. Worshippers were never advised as to the reason for the closure and the Walsh street property was subsequently sold. A week later, private worship began in residential houses, before followers moved to the QCWA Hall on April 5, 2009. Followers named themselves the Mareeba Presbyterian Fellowship and have been unbroken in their commitment since. The Mareeba Presbyterian Fellowship meets each Sunday in the QCWA Hall, in Wilkes Street, Mareeba, starting at 10am. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Report raises concerns about food shortage FOOD security in remote aboriginal communities has reached dangerous levels, a recent report by the Australian Bureau of Statistics has found. Even more alarmingly, the report found it wasn’t only families battling food shortages, but entire communities and towns at a time during the wet season. Findings were focussed on Coen, a township which is 576km from Cairns. During wetter months, the unsealed roads are flooded for weeks, which means the town is effectively cut off from supply delivery and occasionally run out of food. Apunipima Cape York Health Council CEO Cleveland Fagan said the results of the report were unacceptable; and that all levels of government were to blame for ‘insubstantial’ policy. “Food security is difficult to address but it can be addressed at a national, state, regional and local level,” he said. “Cape York has a nutrition strategy that has been a collaboration of multiple agencies; and Apunipima continues to work with communities and their stores to address food security issues, including access and affordability of healthy food. “Only this week, a voucher scheme was launched in Aurukun, to encourage the intake of fruit and vegetables; but without food availability, how can we encourage

people to eat more and make healthier choices? “International studies show that offering financial rewards, external subsidy or co contribution schemes when purchasing healthy foods or drinks encourages people to switch to healthier options and that is what we are hoping to see here. “We have been waiting for too long for a National Nutrition Policy and the evidence presented in this ABS report should surely put this policy development at the top of the national agenda and make food security a key focus. “With the situation in Coen occurring every year we would suggest one of the solutions is to ensure road access it is a main route across the Cape and causes serious issues year in year out. As this occurs regularly in the wet season a more pre-emptive, approach before community reaches crisis point would be logical. “All levels of government need to work collectively with communities to address this issue and need to think differently; not continue using a ‘provider’ model, but look at business and social enterprise models to increase food security in communities.” Member for Cook Billy Gordon was invited to comment on the situation, but had not responded by our print deadline.

Skytrans returns to our skies SKYTRANS aircraft will make a triumphant return to FNQ skies, after airline carrier West Wing Aviation agreed to resume their air operator’s certificate. After a meeting with several creditors interested in revitalising the brand, it was decided flights under the ‘Skytrans’ banner would recommence in early April. With Skytrans closed down in January, several hundred workers were out of employment. It also made travel difficult for those living in remote Far North communities. There were several perceived reasons for the demise of the company, ranging from a declining US dollar to operational expenses. West Wing Aviation initially offered to increase its services, in a bid to ensure that remote communities were not cut off from

the region. These routes will now be expanded, along with potential employment opportunities for former Skytrans staff. All Cape York based services will originate at the Cairns domestic airport and will operate during week days. The communities serviced will include: Aurukun, Bamaga, Coen, Lockhart River, Kowanyama and Pormpuraaw. In total, there will be nine flights between Cairns and Cape York communities, with the first flight departing at 7.10am and returning to Cairns by 3.30pm. The Express contacted the Member for Cook, Billy Gordon, for his thoughts on the decision which will be a timely boost for the electorate, but no response had been received by our print deadline.

Skytrans will return to FNQ skies, with West Wing Aviation set to resume their air operator’s certificate.

Coen children receive important visitors

Students test each other while waiting for their turn.

CAPE York Aboriginal Australian Academy students received an important visit recently, with all students receiving a health check from Apunipima Cape York Health staff. All children received generic health checks, which were designed to outline any potential health issues. Apunipima Cape York Health Maternal and Child Health Midwife Lisa Smith said the screening played an integral part in ensuring the children and parents had greater understanding of their health. “Children in Cape York receive school screening as it is a

vital method of detecting early signs of chronic disease and developmental issues and allows early prevention measures to be put in place. “We are delighted at the level of commitment to the school screen at Coen from the community and thank everyone who took part. “At the school screen children receive an eyesight and hearing screen, their height and weight is measured and their teeth are checked, to make sure there is no decay or gum disease. Iron and sugar levels are also checked along with their heart, limbs and skin.”

$60,000 of sponsorship donated from local bank The Mareeba and Dimbulah Community Bank branches hosted their annual sponsorship rounds last week. Over 40 groups received contributions totalling just under $60,000. Community Bank® Chairman Mr Gilbert Teitzel said: “Over $1.5 million has been returned and held for our local communities over the last nine years. “Providing support to so many volunteer not for profit groups is a key focus of the Community Bank®; and we are proud to play such an integral role in our communities.” Over 25 groups attended the Presentation function on Monday night at the Mareeba Leagues Club, with Dimbulah holding its presentation night on Wednes-

day at the Dimbulah Bowls Club. The Community Bank® model is a real asset to regional towns as the Bendigo Bank branches in Mareeba and Dimbulah are owned by just over 500 local shareholders. The Board of Directors are local community and business people who dedicate their time to managing the revenue share from the branches. ‘Reinvesting surplus profits to develop and increase the capacity of our communities is the fundamental objective of the model,” Mr Teitzel said. “Without the community supporting the local Bendigo Bank branches with their banking, insurance and financial needs, none of this would be possible.”

Prevent spread of electric ants in FNQ Grasstrees... Grasstrees (Xanthorrhoea sp.) are a highly regulated plant that is protected by law. They can only be salvaged from the wild by licensed harvesters from areas where they would otherwise be destroyed by approved activities such as road construction. As a result, grasstrees are not always available in nurseries. Fortunately, Yuruga Nursery regularly receives certified grasstrees for Retail Sale. As required by the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, all grasstrees come with QWPS wild harvest tags and have been hardened off in pots to increase their survival rate.

A Port Douglas man was fined $1200 by the Cairns Magistrate Court last week, after failing to heed restrictions imposed on his property by Biosecurity Qld. The man was notified of electronic ant movement restrictions placed on his property, but still chose to dump green waste, which resulted in the hefty fine. Biosecurity Queensland Electric Ant Eradication Program Coordinator Gary Morton said the man was caught dumping the waste, with an informant notifying relevant authorities. “Further investigations confirmed that the resident’s property was in an area where movement controls were in place as electric ants had previously been found on their property,” Mr Morton said.

“Movement controls minimise the movement of high-risk materials and activities to prevent any further spread of the ants. “This kind of irresponsible behaviour needs to be stopped and we ask residents to report illegal dumping to their local council.” Electric ants were first detected in Cairns nine years ago. Roughly 1.5mm in length, they are golden brown in hue and extremely aggressive. A sting from an electric ant can be extremely painful. If bitten, the victim can endure pain for several days. Locally, Mr Morton said Kuranda posed the highest risk for infestation, due to increased plant movement in the area. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he had been in

contact with Mr Morton and informed that door to door searches would occur to prevent the spread of electric ants within the MSC region. If you would like to learn more about electric ants and how best to prevent infestation, please visit:www.daff.qld.gov.au/plants/ weeds-pest-animals-ants/pestanimals/a-z-listing-of-pest-animals/ photo-guide-to-pest-animals/electric-ants. Electric ants are extremely aggressive and can be transferred easily by plant swapping.

Back in the “good old days” people would simply dig up a grasstree from the wild. Doing so today will undoubtedly attract a very hefty fine. If all this sounds a bit over the top, consider what the Australian bush would look like if all the grasstrees were gone. Legalities aside, grasstrees are fantastic plants for the home garden. For starters, they are native, and iconic, Australian plants. They produce large spikes covered in hundreds of tiny white flowers that will attract native birds as well as many insects and butterflies. Once established they are very hardy, will tolerate the dry season and will even recover after bushfires. In fact, grasstrees respond quite well to being set on fire every few years as it stimulates them to produce new growth and burns off the skirt of dry dead leaves. There is also something very eye-catching about the symmetry of a grasstree that always leads to them becoming a focal feature in any garden. And if you’re not much of a gardener you’ll appreciate the fact that grasstrees never need to be pruned, they won’t grow out of control and normally will never need to be fertilised or treated for pests or diseases. So come on in to Yuruga and get yourself a grasstree before they are all sold again!! All advanced plants including grasstrees are 20% off for the month of April.

Happy gardening, and see you at Yuruga!

Celebrating the 100th year of ANZACS Mareeba RSL held its third annual ANZAC Ball on Saturday, March 28, as part of celebrating the 100th Year of ANZAC. More than 200 people attended the event, with past My Kitchen Rules entrant, Major David Hopgood, as MC. The special guest speaker was rugby union legend, journalist and author Peter FitzSimons, who entertained the crowd with old sporting and war stories. Former army solider Craig Reedman, of Mareeba, was acknowledged for his commitment to the annual ANZAC ball and was presented with a perpetual trophy. The 1st Batallion Royal Australian Regiment Band from Townsville played late into the night, with musical favourites that kept the crowd on the dance floor. Wet season: keep your livestock safe tralia Regional Officer Dr Sarah-Jane Wilson said property owners should establish a risk management plan and ensure any potential cases are minimised. “An emergency action plan can help manage livestock during an emergency, allowing livestock owners to prioritise the actions that need to be taken,” she said. “For example, clean water, suitable fodder and a safe environment are priorities in the early stages after an emergency event. “Finding displaced stock and re-homing stray stock is also critical, and relies on having effective traceability systems in place.

Wet weather can play havoc with your livestock. GRAZIERS and Pastoralists alike are being encouraged to monitor weather patterns during the coming months, to ensure their livestock remains safe. An Easter Message Jake and John were outback miners. They were also good mates. They were sinking a mineshaft just west of Tennant Creek, where gold had been discovered in abundance. Jake worked above ground; while John preferred the underground. They were about 40 feet down and all was going on time and to plan. John would dig and fill the heavy iron bucket below, while Jake would work the primitive pulley, bringing the load to the surface for emptying and sorting. One day the fully laden bucket was winched to the surface. Jake flicked over the safety latch on the pulley to secure the load. Out of nowhere, Jake heard a sharp crack and heard the chain on the pulley sliding backwards to fast to stop; and impossible for one man to hold. He turned to see the shear bolt on the pulley had snapped and the chain disappearing into the darkness below, with the heavy loaded bucket already out of site. There was not even time to think as the missile headed towards the unsuspecting miner below. Jake instinctively knew there was only one way he might be able to save his mate below. Without any hesitation or thought to his own personal safety, he threw his body into the winch mechanism as hard as he could, using his body as a human brake. He had just enough strength to wrap his arms fiercely around the top of the main cog of the winch. Jake immediately felt his arms and chest being turned to mincemeat by the vicious teeth on the cog, made a hundred times worse by the huge weight moving at speed below him. In a split second he made the decision to hang on knowing that if his bid failed, John would be crushed to death in an instant. The laden iron bucket stopped inches from John’s head, as he looked up in absolute shock. Even if he had wanted to, there was no time to even sidestep the plummeting bucket. The quick thinking and selfless heroic actions of a true mate saved a man’s life who had no way of saving himself. Jakes body was severely scarred for the rest of his life; but when asked if it really was worth it he replied: “My own personal sacrifice was worth it to see my mate saved”. John 15:13 says; for greater love has no man than this; than to lay down one’s life for his friends. This is exactly what Easter and Christ’s crucifixion is all about. His pain – our gain!

THE OLD PULPIT

“The addition to the Church (St George’s Anglican Church Mareeba) is giving much pleasure to us all, and now we wonder how we managed to put up with the building in its previous state. The pulpit, made by Mr. (Andy) Smith, is a great improvement, the altar looks more dignified, and the chancel arch has a pleasing effect”. The above paragraph is an excerpt from the “Mareeba Notes” which appeared in The Northern Churchman, 1915. Mr Andy Smith was a local cabinetmaker, and he and his family were congregation members. Mr Smith had bought the business from the Brims family. Two of the sons of Mr. J. Brims, Francis and Marcus, aged 17 and 16 years, had built the Church in 1905. In time, a larger Church was built and was consecrated by Bishop John Lewis in 1981. The old pulpit was decommissioned, and we are proud to have added it to our very valuable artefacts at Mareeba Heritage Museum.

Mareeba Community Housing Company

AffordAble ACCoMModAtion Mareeba Community Housing

Mareeba Community Housing Company Ltd, is a not-for-profit housing company operating in Mareeba for more than 18 years. They are funded by the Qld Department of Housing, to deliver transitional housing for clients with very high need for housing by leasing properties off the private rental market in Mareeba. Patricia Goldfinch (pictured), Manager of Mareeba Community Housing Company said: “This program has been operating for over 18 years and we receive great support from our local property owners.” Other housing programs managed are the long term housing programs that include two specially designed two bedroom disability units owned by MCHC. The company has designed and

delivers a tenancy training program targeted to clients who have never rented in the private or community housing sector before or who need assistance to sustain existing tenancies. “Mareeba Community Housing Company is elated with the opportunity to manage, on behalf of Neil Setford, four one bedroom units of affordable accommodation in Mareeba,” Ms Goldfich said. “Mareeba has a very high need for affordable accommodation for a large number of our clients and the addition of the one bedroom units will ease the burden for four of them with the rental vacancy rate in Mareeba operating at around per cent.” Housing analysis taken by MCHC in February 2015 identified of the 117 persons registered for one bedroom housing in Mareeba with the Department of Housing, 58 of them were listed with a high to very high need for housing. Of all the properties 5 per cent listed were affordable for a couple on the aged pension and none of the properties were affordable for single persons on Newstart, youth allowance, age pension, apprentice or junior minimum wages. Experienced staff are on hand to assist in the areas of housing information and community referrals and assistance with completing DOH housing applications. Further details can be obtained by contacting the office on 4092 7042.

A vision to help those who need it By Justin Fris

NEIL Setford (pictured) has been reflecting on several things since he initially moved to the Far North 10 years ago. A major point to ponder was: If I was just starting out as a young person now, how would I be able to afford a house? So after discussions with family and stakeholders, Mr Setford decided to make his dream to help others come true. “The current housing prices in our region are ridiculous,” he said. “My family and I are relatively well set up, but I wanted to see whether I could build cheap, but adequate housing for those who really need it. “I took the plans to local draftsmen and builders, who were all really supportive of the plans and overall concept. “After purchasing the land, I was able to build four units; but I wanted to

make sure the units were rented out to people who needed affordable accommodation the most. “So after consultation with Mareeba Community Housing, they agreed to get on board and will rent out the properties at $150 per week.” Mr Setford added the current demographics of housing in Australia has changed, with 50 per cent of all residential housing nationwide containing either one or two people. This has been taken into account, with all of the new units designed to cater especially for the tenants occupying them. Originally from Melbourne, Mr Setford now lives in Tolga with his family. He loves the community spirit of the region. He said he would be taking a small break from developing, but would eventually look at building more affordable housing for the general public. The development is located at Strattman Street, Mareeba.

EXPRESS sPORT Bulls run rampant against FNQ Heat in Cairns

Gladiators blindsided by bursts of excellence By Justin Fris

BROTHERS Cairns easily defeated the Mareeba Gladiators 56-20 last Saturday afternoon at a sundrenched Davies Park. The visitors had three purple patches during the game, where they scored heavily and had defenders chasing shadows. Signs were ominous early for the home side, with the opening kick-off sailing aimlessly out on the full. After quickly restoring possession, the Gladiators made use of some good ball near the Brothers line, with Dwayne Williams crossing over in the 5th minute of the match. But with an early lead and opportunities to distance themselves from the visitors, the Gladiators were let down by poor field kicking on the last tackle. Instead of bisecting the backs and forcing the backs to scramble from out of their own in-goal area, too often it was an easy catch and sprint up field. Brothers trimmed the lead back at the 14th minute mark, with Maipele Morseau confidently breaking through a wall of defenders for a try. It was only 11 minutes later, that the visitors had their first purple patch of the game, which

turned the match on its head. Tries by Broksi Emery-Hunia and Adam Kelly within a lethal three minute spell seemed to stun the home side, who had rode their luck in the opening portion of the half. Kelly’s try was simply remarkable, due to his awareness off the ruck; and sheer strength while under pressure. All was not lost for the home faithful though, with livewire Apenisa Cokanasiga breathing life into the contest on the stroke of half-time, after the home side had peppered the Brothers line like members of a lonely hearts club band. Belief was maintained for Gladiators supporters early in the second half, when Ian King took advantage of a 2x1 overlap down the grandstand side of Davies Park. Brothers lost some of their zest during the opening 18 minutes of the half, with handling errors near the Gladiators line frustrating them no end. No one at Davies Park could have foreseen what would occur in next 11 minutes, with Brothers going berserk and putting the home side to the sword with four unanswered converted tries. Shana Aue was able to score a late consolation try for the home side, where he simply

swatted the ball out of a defender’s hand and lunged over the chalk. Alas for the majority of the crowd, the visitors had one lethal burst left in them, with Damian Cockburn and Robbie Swain adding their names to the scoresheet in as many minutes. Brothers Cairns Coach Chey Bird said the performance was pleasing overall, considering the lengthy road trip for his men. “It’s definitely a pleasing result,” he said. “It’s always a difficult road trip to Mareeba, but I thought we were able to weather the storm.” Bird added that his side still had some things to work on in coming weeks; but was also pleased with how George Morseau and Adam Kelly applied themselves during the game. It was a disappointing end for the Gladiators, but Apenisa Cokanasiga, Jack Petersen and Frank Koroi could hold their heads high after the match. In other grade matches, the Gladiators under 18’s went down 26-16 and reserves lost 48-6, both against strong opposition. The Malanda/Mareeba Eels were 50-10 victors over Brothers Cairns in their second division contest, extending their winning streak.

THE Mareeba Bulls strolled to an impressive 5-1 victory against the FNQ Heat Young Guns last Saturday night at Barlow Park, Cairns. Marking the initiation of the Frank Farina Cup, travelling supporters had plenty to cheer about from the outset. The visitors had some relatively minor selection concerns prior to the game, with Julian Madrid and Anthony Mete (injured) and David Ruiz (work commitments) all unavailable. Otherwise, seven men from last season’s Premier Men’s grand final side made the trip and dominated their youthful opponents. MUFC made a breathless start to the match and led 3-0 by the half time break. Leo Cisterni, Larry Maggio and Robert Pendenza all found the net for the Bulls, which delighted Alex Srhoj in the dugout. Further delight came to the Bulls in the second half, with Pendenza adding a second, along with Paul Ruiz converting from the penalty spot. Ruiz was felled by a wayward defender in the 80th minute, but was cooly able to put an exclamation mark on the massive victory. MUFC Premier Men’s Coach Alex Srhoj was naturally elated with the result and grateful his players could get some much needed match fitness. “The result aside, the actions of the players was the most important thing,” he said. “The message was clear, was to make sure we got a much as could from the game. “And with most of the boys playing 90 minutes and playing some good football, it was exactly what we needed” After their first round match against Leichhardt was postponed, the Bulls will potentially face a fixture logjam in coming months. After the Easter break, the Bulls will travel to Tiger Park and face Edge Hill United, before returning to Borzi Park and facing Innisfail. A date for their FFA Cup fixture is still yet to be announced.

Springmount Raceway preview day By Justin Fris

MOTORSPORT enthusiasts converged on Springmount Raceway last Sunday, with many having their first look at the track. Springmount Raceway Director Evan Yelavich said he was really impressed with the crowd and said meetings should commence in late July. “It’s been a great turnout today,” she said. “We would have had around 1000 people attend.” Mr Yelavich said various elements of the strip were modelled similarly to Kwinana Motorplex, 40km south of Perth. “In total, the drag strip itself is 400 meters,” he said. “But, if you include start and breaking areas, it is officially 1km.

“We will initially begin with day meetings, which will be held once a month. Once lights are installed, we would look to hold night meetings.” Mr Yelavich added that the Springmount Raceway would be keen to structure meetings around Mackay, in order for both tracks to maximise attendance and participation. Preliminary talks have also been held with the Australian National Drag Racing Association (ANDRA), which could be the track included within the national circuit. The economical and social benefits that Springmount Raceway will bring to Atherton, Mareeba and Walkamin are huge, with many businesses destined to reap the benefits of extra patronage and income.

Springmount Directors Evan Yelavich and Richie Robb were pleased with the turn out.

SCHOOL aged riders from across the Far North eagerly participated at the interschool horse sports carnival last Saturday at the Mareeba and District Pony Club. 93 participants from Prep to Year 12 participated in the event, which came from 19 primary schools and 12 secondary schools. Held between 9am and 2pm, riders completed an eight event circuit, which included: Bounce Pony, Keyhole, Bending, Scudda Ho, The Box, Mug Race and Diamond Flag. Chief Instructor Janet Jennings said ‘The Keyhole’ event was challenging, as riders had to factor in several variables. “The Keyhole is all about precision,” she said. “Riders need to maintain their horse in a straight line and then turn in the shape of a keyhole.” Ms Jennings said the importance of horsemanship for riders was paramount; and all events took hours of dedication and practise.

VITAL wins were recorded by the Red Devils and Warriors last Thursday night, during round six of the local basketball league in Mareeba. Having possession of the ball is one thing, but being able to convert when you have opportunities to score is completely different. The Warriors trailed by six points at half time during their contest against the Celtics. Shots weren’t falling, with the result of the game teetering. Yet in the second half, it was a completely different story, with the Warriors utilising their possession and running away with a 36-24 victory. As the match began, you could sense the twists and turns that were to befall both spectators and players. Celtics players were routinely sent to the line to shoot from the stripe, which gave them an early lead. Having not had a single shot for the opening three minutes, the Warriors then drained two solid threes within 30 seconds, taking the lead from their momentarily stunned opponents. Over enthusiasm then took over for the Warriors, who had one player too many on the court and the Celtics duly regained the lead. Tyson Tatti was extremely influential for the Celtics, especially in mid court. Like a diligent traffic officer, his presence guided others where they needed to be. Shooting 3/12 from the field and 0/5 from the beyond the key, the Celtics failed to show on the scoreboard how dominant they were. The Warriors went 2/11 from the field, but Jonah

Hastie-Dooley’s timely layup just before half-time gave them hope. Whatever was said to the visiting Warriors during the break clearly worked, as they produced their best shooting performance of any quarter this season. Brandon Osborne came to life during the third term, as the Warriors made sensible, smart baskets and gained ascendancy of the contest. It was a disappointing second half for the Celtics, who shot a total 2/18 from the field and 0/3 from downtown. Both sides played the match in good spirits, with all coaches and parents facilitating the game in the best way possible. Title contenders typically start their run around now, with the Red Devils clinical during their 46-22 win over the Comets. Truth be told, the Devils barely raised a sweat at certain times during the game, although no one could fault the attitude or application of the Comets. Clinton Cameron brought his own ball to the game, with his irrepressible agility being too much for the Comets. One major positive for the Comets was the sheer amount of youth in their team. Regular rotations were applied, so all players got equal game time. Sure, they may have lost on the scoreboard, but in the long run the younger players will be better for the experience of playing against seasoned opponents. Fabio Nocilla was best afield for the Comets, with his effort and passion for the game a real highlight for those who attended.
