AREEBA will receive $14 million from the Palaszczuk Government, which will be used to further develop the airport and various waterbased facilities. All projects were tabled prior to this year’s election by the previous Member for Cook, David Kempton, with the funds secured through the LNP’s ‘Royalties for Regions’ program. The Mareeba Airport will receive $13 million, which will include a new international flight school and overall development of the facility, while the remaining $1 million will be set aside for upgrades to the town’s wastewater treatment plant, along with purchasing a one mega litre reservoir for Kuranda. Despite the change in government, Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore has worked feverously with various stakeholders to ensure that all three projects were honoured. Federal Member for Kennedy Bob Katter released a statement last Sunday praising Member for Dalrymple Shane Knuth for ‘having secured the money for the upgrading of the Mareeba Airport’. While there can be no question of Mr Knuth’s commitment to the Tablelands or support toward local projects, it should be noted the Mareeba Airport is located in the Cook electorate, not Dalrymple. State Development Minister and Natural Resources and Mines Minister Dr Anthony Lynham said the ALP was committed to honouring both ‘Royalties for Regions’ based projects. The airport development will be comprised of two stages, with an initial brief and preliminary drainage works, with the overall development to follow. Mayor Gilmore said the funding could prove to be a real turning point for the town and his Shire as a whole. “This development has been sought after for many years and on behalf of the community, I offer my deepest gratitude to the Minister and the Government for offering this once in a lifetime opportunity,” he said. Contact was made with the Member for Cook’s (Billy Gordon) staff in regard to the matter, although no response was received by our print deadline. Mr Gordon’s role in the negotiation process of these outcomes is publically unclear, as Mr Lynham did not mention Mr Gordon’s input during the announcement.
