Which way will the KAP pendulum swing?

KAP’s Kingmakers A

t an impromptu media conference at Brisbane Airport last week, both re-elected KAP MPs Robbie Katter (Mount Isa) and Shane Knuth (Dalrymple) said they would work in the interests of Queensland (in particular rural and regional areas), rather than the interests of either major parties. “This is an opportunity for rural and regional Queensland. For too long we’ve been neglected, now democracy has spoken and this is an oppor-

tunity for the bush,” Mr Katter said. “The bush has been forgotten since the National Party ceased to exist; and for Shane and I, this is an opportunity to present our case for rural and regional Queensland to both sides. “We’ll be handing a list to both parties and we’ll see how they respond to this; and ultimately that will be the arbiter of our decision.” Mr Katter said it was an opportunity for the new government to invest in infrastructure in rural and regional Queensland.

Shane Knuth was decisive about where KAP priorities lie. “We don’t care about what’s in the interests of the great Liberal Party or the great Labor Party; what we care about is what’s in the interests of the people of Queensland. “The people of Queensland have spoken – they don’t like the style of leadership over the past three years.” In a one on one interview with The Express, Mr Knuth said he was ‘greatly humbled and hon-

oured’ to serve Dalrymple for a third term. Despite an early swing to the LNP 30 minutes into the count, Mr Knuth immediately reversed the trend, polling strongly on the primary vote in Atherton, Charters Towers, Malanda and Tolga. Mr Knuth said he had been in ‘full-on’ negotiations with KAP officials and both major political parties since the election. He added the negotiations and sourcing common ground would continue in coming weeks, with the eventual result being ‘very tight’.

MAREEBA State High School has inducted its latest influx of talented students into senior leadership positions. Newly elected school captains Sam Harris and Helena Kath began the lengthy journey to success before the start of their school holidays. The pair went through a rigorous process; where they were required to submit a written application, address their peers and community members, and complete interviews with MSHS Principal Jo Soothill and school staff.

Once notified that they had been voted in, both appeared excited at the news. Helena said she was ‘elated’, while Sam said he felt more ‘relieved’, when informed. Sam’s path to the position was distinctively unique, as he was away during the first week of school due to attending the National Science Championships. Penning the speech while he was away, Sam had a friend read the speech on his behalf to the entire cohort;

and the rest they say, is history. Sam said he had a few science commitments to juggle during his school year and has applied to attend the London Youth Science forum later in 2015. “I guess my passion for science is also about exploring unknowns and doing what I can to help people,” he said. “I really would like to thank my parents, teachers and especially my friends for all the support they have given to

me.” Helena is committed to helping young girls in Mareeba realise their potential in netball. In a part-time position each week, she loves working with younger kids and helping them fulfil their potential. Ms Soothill said she was excited about a series of upcoming events for the school; which will include an induction day for seniors, along with a swimming carnival.

FOR anyone who has battled the murkiness of mental illness (or anxietyrelated stress) in their lifetime, words do little justice to describe how it feels. Due to the success of last year’s events, Mareeba Rotary will again host a Mental Health First Aid Workshop; designed to improve education on mental health issues. Held at the Mareeba Hospital on March 24 and 25 (Tuesday and Wednesday), the course could prove to be a beacon of hope for many. Dr Margaret Purcell, who has played an integral part in the delivery of the sessions, said attendance has never been an issue. “Last year, all of the events were really well attended,” she said. “Mareeba Rotary also does a wonderful job in raising awareness of the event. “The sessions are designed to provide awareness for those battling a mental illness and how best to improve the situation.”

Currently, it is estimated that three million Australians are currently battling anxiety or depression, which can be caused by a multitude of factors. There are several things that both individuals and concerned loved ones can do in a bid to quell these illnesses. A simple conversation with the person in question is sometimes all it takes to determine if someone is struggling. Courses such these are designed to help people gain further understanding into the thought patterns of those with a mental illness and how best to react and effectively handle certain situations. If you or anyone you know is battling a mental illness and would like support (or someone to speak with), please talk to someone about it. Spaces within the course are strictly limited to 12 people; and will run between 8.30am to 4.30pm both days. To book for the course ($50 per person) please phone Tanya on 4092 9146.

Building approvals up by 35 per cent

Bridges along Kirrama Range road (like the one pictured) need funding.

Councillors need to build a bridge By Justin Fris

EMOTION and personal differences again filled another council meeting for the Tablelands Regional Council last Thursday. It was a case of New Year, same old problems for councillors at the table; with personal dissatisfaction impacting on the ability to generate succinct, productive outcomes as a group. Councillor Shaaron Linwood used her opportunity during general business to put forward a suggestion that the balance of $150,000 from the proposed Timoulin Truck Pad be reallocated toward the improving a major bridge (one of four) on Kirrama Range road. Almost instantaneously, this notion was flagged by both Cnr Peter Hodge and Mayor Rosa Lee Long. Cnr Hodge was puzzled as to why the matter was left until general business, while Mayor Lee Long said she was keen to wait for a report, before council voted collec-

tively on the matter. Cnr Rod Marti weighed in on the matter and told the room he was concerned about local farmers’ ability to go about their business, given the current state of bridges along the road. “It’s an urgent priority,” he said. Cnr Geoff Stocker, after observing the tennis-like interaction, said he was not happy to make an ‘ad-hoc’ decision with no report in front of him. Cnr Linwood then returned serve, saying the state of the major bridge along the road was ‘critical’ and that some funding on the ground was imperative. Her voice dipped low during the address and you really could feel the emotion in the room. It was clear the issue meant a great deal to her. Input from Cnr Marjorie Pagani was then added to the discussion, which lead to a miniinterlude of disapproval between herself and

At its meeting on Wednesday, February 4, the Mareeba Shire Council recorded a 35 per cent increase in building approval with the shire. The local construction industry saw a rise in activity (2013-2014) with a total of 402 building approvals issued; which included 304 Council approvals and 98 Private Certification approvals. The total value of all building approvals for the year 2014 was $49,753,939.35, compared to $36,530,213.92 in 2013. This total increase in value of building work is due to a greater than average number of dwelling constructions in 2014 of 161; which is an increase of 51 units over 2013. The last quarter for 2014 saw a total of 119 building approvals issued, which included 93 Council approvals and 26 Private Certification approvals. The total value of building approvals for the October-December quarter shows an increase of approximately $3.2m compared to the previous year (total of $13,882,271.10 for the quarter). Local Builder Karl Srhoj said, “We have a steady flow of work for the next six to eight months; and the recent interest rate drop by the RBA should see an increase in families wanting to build new homes”. Also in a confident mood builder Robert Battistin said, “There was a little uncertainty early last year; but since then things have picked up. Confidence is still not where it should be, but we live in a growing area; land is still within the reach of most people and I think we have quite a bright future ahead.” The building statistics reflect greater than average dwelling construction in the Mareeba township.

Mayor Lee Long. Cnr Linwood defiantly tapped the table twice, while telling the room she was just trying to make a sensible outcome a reality. Mayor Lee Long said although Cnr Linwood’s intentions were ‘very noble’, not all councillors had looked at all the facts; therefore no snap decision could be uniformly approved. Another spot-fire broke out, with different councillors accusing each other of not being invited to certain meetings. The dialogue overall would have made a prep student blush, until Cnr Hodge said it was time all councillors sat in a room and decided together on how to fix the situation. There is little doubt that improved bridge conditions along the Kirrama Range road would help local graziers, but perhaps councillors should build a bridge of their own in the boardroom first.

Wet weather drenches Cairns and the Tablelands DRIVING rain lashed its way across Cairns and the Tablelands over the weekend, leaving many roads unaccessible to motorists for substantial periods of time. The Kuranda Range became a temporary skating rink, with large oil slicks creating havoc for traffic. In excess of 280mm of rain fell in some areas, resulting in several event cancellations across the area.

Showcase event for entrepreneurs By Justin Fris

TABLELANDS Regional Councillors agreed in unison last Thursday to endorse a $2,000 sponsorship from their Economic Development Fund toward an enterprising weekend in Atherton. In conjunction with both the Atherton and Malanda Chamber of Commerce, the ‘Atherton Tablelands Startup Weekend’ will be putting entrepreneurial innovation at the forefront. The event, which will be held between May 1 and 3, will give local entrepreneurs 54 hours to showcase the full range of their talents. Modelling of the event has centred on leaders and aspiring members of the community coming together and empowering each other through innovative design and sharing of ideas. In a report compiled by Nicole van Beuningen for council, councillors and onlookers were given great insight into how the event will run. Entrepreneurs will begin the event pitching a series of ideas and will slowly build toward preparing a product for appraisal. All weekend, these hard working individuals will receive mentorship, critical feedback and a true ‘hands on’ experience. An initial budget has also been tabled, which would (if estimations are correct) see the event making a profit of $650. Along with the TRC’s sponsorship of $2,000 and ticket prices (also $2,000), the Tablelands Futures Corporation has signalled interest in sponsoring the event. TFC Chair Michael Lawrence said that members of the organisation were aware of the event’s potential, along with the benefits it could bring to the Tablelands. “The TFC supports the concept of the event and is aware of its potential,” he said. “There are several ways that small businesses within our region can engage; and this is just another opportunity.

TFC Chair Michael Lawrence is keen to support the Atherton Tablelands Startup Weekend, as it will bring a lot to the Tablelands. “A lot of innovative small businesses exist within our region and the weekend is an opportunity for them to demonstrate their abilities in several different ways.”

The establishment of a botanical garden (such as the one pictured), would be a wonderful addition to Atherton’s tourism economy. (Supplied Photo) By Justin Fris

SEVERAL Atherton locals have completed the first step in a bid to bring a new botanical garden to the town. In a special presentation to members of the Tablelands Regional Council last Thursday, Paddy Forsayeth and Terry Clark spoke of the their harbouring vision for the future. The proposed site would be located along the railway easement (lot 20) between Rotary Park and Grove Street (approximately 2.06 hectares). Mr Clark told councillors that the group (many involved with the Atherton Lions) was not coming to the TRC for funding, as they were prepared to raise funds across a multitude of levels. “The proposal has been the works for

around six months,” he said. “Sam came to us about the idea and we (Atherton Lions) decided to form a feasibility committee. “We decided to present our proposal to council to let them know what we are up to and inform them we are prepared to raise the funding for it.” Lot 20 is already owned; with the occupant currently residing in Cheshire, England. Mr Clark said the committee had written to the owner about the possibility of purchasing the land; however they had not received a response. Ideas for the botanical garden were also highlighted to councillors, which included a main water fountain and potentially a chapel for couples to get married in a picturesque setting. Mr Clark also said he was keen to involve

local community groups and schools in the makeup of the garden; even offering each of them a personalised section. Once the presentation was completed, councillors began to convey their initial reactions of the proposed project. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long thanked Mr Clark and the entire committee for their presentation, ahead of her feedback. She informed them that the idea was a positive one and that they had effectively given TRC officers a ‘starting point’. Mayor Lee Long added that several things were in play; but a motion to table a report on the proposal and refer to officers was carried unanimously at the table. Mr Clark told the room that the committee would look at other potential locations, should they be unable to purchase lot 20 in due course.

Review by Louise Keller: Cars pirouette, spin, flip and are crushed in a dramatic freeway car chase, while a nail-biting sequence involving a small plane and a black Porsche makes hearts stop. Incredible plot aside, the charismatic presence of Liam Neeson and his impenetrable sense of decency carry the film way beyond its thrilling action sequences.

dictably, but it's a winning formula: non stop action, a plot with some surprises and an enigmatic central hero imbued with courage and decency. After an attention grabbing opening, leaving us with no doubt that the Russian mobsters mean business, the film concentrates on re-establishing the central characters and their close relationships. The giant stuffed panda birthday gift for grown up daughter Kim (Maggie Grace) may not be the brightest idea for father daughter establishment, but Neeson's likeability allows us to forgive little script absurdities. And of course, we are quick to be reminded of his close relationship with ex-wife Lenore (Fake Janssen), who admits to fantasizing about Mills while still being married to Stuart (Dougray Scott). Mills clearly reciprocates her lust but is too decent to do anything about it. It's all about Neeson and he excels as the former government operative with special skills, who knows how to disappear at will. Grace is excellent as his screen daughter Kim with her own personal issues and it's easy to dislike Scott as Lenore's wealthy second husband. As for the bad ass Russian mobsters, they are reliably nasty with bigwig Sam Spruell wearing his Y-fronts in the tense, bullet-riddled shoot out scene at the plush Malibu penthouse. The cleaning up bill must have been huge! It's a good way to close the franchise - assuming this is the final chapter. It's a bit of a guilty pleasure bang bang movie with Neeson up front and centre. The opening credits put me right in the mood: great use of aerial night shots of LA skyscrapers, nicely edited to the syncopated jazz score. The result is edgy and intriguing.

FIFTY SHADES OF GREY is a story of control and success When Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey, as a favour to her room-mate Kate Kavanagh, she encounters a beautiful, brilliant and intimidating man. The innocent and naive Ana starts to realise she wants him, despite his enigmatic reserve and advice - she finds herself desperate to get close to him. Not able to resist Ana's beauty and independent spirit, Christian Grey admits he wants her too, but in his own terms. Ana hesitates as she discovers the singular tastes of Christian Grey - despite the embellishments of success, his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family - Grey is consumed by the need to control everything.

Protecting his family at all costs is the first priority of Neeson's Bryan Mills and in a clever twist on the plot of the two previous films of the franchise, screenwriters Luc Besson and Robert Mark Kamen have devised a premise in which Mills is set up for a crime he didn't commit, before spending the rest of the film proving he didn't do it. EXPRESSyourself LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

Uncertain times ahead for Cook I wish to thank all those people in my electorate who placed their trust and faith in me for nearly three years; and I am honoured to have represented you. Over the past two days, I have received outpourings of grief and bewilderment at the outcome of Saturday’s election. I write this not as sour grapes, as I will move on; but by way of explanation to all those right thinking people in Cook, who deserve something better than what they got. Despite a huge union presence at the booths, the Campbell Newman factor and the asset leasing, I defied the odds and held onto the primary vote in the Shires of Mareeba, Douglas and Cook. I accept full responsibility for my Government’s failure to bring the State with it, in the process of change. At Mareeba on Saturday, there were virtually no Labor supporters handing out. The booths were manned by people who were not locals, but union organisers from Cairns, Melbourne and beyond. Running a scare campaign about the LNP selling schools and hospitals and intimidating people to the point some had to be reported to the returning officer. The second factor was Katter. He runs young inexperienced candidates, who are decent people; but have no chance of getting elected. Voters need to understand that a vote for Katter is a vote for Labor,as that is how the preferences flow. I would have held the seat and the LNP may have held government, despite these factors except for a decimation of the indigenous vote. At the last election, I gained about 30% of the indigenous vote across the board, which was one of the strongest conservative outcomes for generations. Warren Entsch held his own against Billy Gordon in the Federal election, so Gordon being an indigenous man was not the reason. Last Saturday I did well if I got 10 per cent of the vote, which was astounding in view of all the economic opportunity I had brought in over the past three years for indigenous people. It has emerged and was confirmed by the Labor

Open letter to the newly elected

candidates' comments to a reporter that he did not campaign at all in the communities as “his team was onto it". His “team" consisted of union people such as nurses, teachers and Ergon workers (all paid government employees), who for weeks have had a concerted campaign of despicable lies to scare indigenous voters. Things like "The LNP will take your welfare benefit off you, cut your power, close the hospital, sell the school, take your job and cut your pay.” The irony of this is these people are the very "fly in fly outs”, who are taking up jobs in communities where indigenous people could be working; all very scary to people who are dependent on welfare. All intentional lies and against the electoral laws. This loss was across the board except in Aurukun and Kowanyama, where I was able to talk to the people just before the election. So what happens now? All the major projects I have worked so hard for are now unlikely to happen. Mareeba Airport, Mareeba Sewerage Treatment Plant, Kuranda Range upgrade, sports precinct, bike track, lap stacker for hospital, Lockhart Airstrip , power north of Daintree, Port Douglas water supply and waterfront to name a few. Tree clearing permits will be revoked and market choice will be denied to cane growers and so the list goes on. Mareeba, Port Douglas and Mossman will have a local member who will be a puppet to the Labor Government; which will in turn be driven by faceless unions. I see all the lights we lit over the past three years, fading already. I can't help but feel responsible; but do not know how I might have stemmed this tide of lies and intimidation. I am truly grateful to my team and all the people of Cape York who saw through the lies and smear spread by the Labor candidate and his union mates last Saturday. I thank you all and will do everything I can to support you all in the future. David Kempton, Former Member for Cook

Let us hope that Curtis is the new Treasurer of Queensland. He is a great bloke, a good local member and we remember how much money flowed our way when Cairns last had a State Treasurer as a local member. The difference we are all acutely aware of this time around is, there is no money. To be honest, I am sick of the technical arguments of net debt and gross debt, what we all know is there is a s#!t load of debt. If our new Treasurer is to once again bring the rivers of gold to our city, the money must come from somewhere other than the state coffers. Whether the money is from the city state of Singapore or the People's Republic of China, quite frankly I don't care either, we need investment because we need jobs. We have trusted Labor to create these jobs and we all know what will happen if they break our trust.

Far North Queenslanders have spoken, and as they say, the electorate is never wrong. Oppositions never win elections; governments lose them, so how did the government lose the Far North? We rejected the Newman Government for the same reason we rejected the Bligh Government less than three years ago; a lack of trust. Despite promising over $250 million in local infrastructure spending, Cairns no longer trusted the LNP. This is a powerful lesson for our newly minted local members: you can promise bike paths and botanical gardens, but if you lose our trust, you will lose your job. Our newly elected Labor members promised us "a better way" - no asset sales, more front line services and more jobs, but this is state-wide rhetoric. What I am interested in, is the promised 30 new Trent Twomey, Chairman nurses and 65 new graduate nurses for our hospital, Advance Cairns the promised funding of more flights into China and the promise to deliver hHh hhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Aquis. Curtis Pitt promised us that "there was no difference between the Government's and the Opposition's position on Aquis. We are committed to delivering the Aquis development". So if the environmental impact study is completed, the ACT Government has completed their probity - we still have to finish ours, but this should be a formality now that CanUkuleles, banjos, Mandolins, berra has settled - then the last missing piece of Keyboards, Complete Range of the jigsaw is the IRD (InFull sized Guitars from $95 tegrated Resort Development) licence. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift is enlisting Far North Queenslanders to push themselves one third further, faster, harder this March to help obliterate cancer once and for all!

Far North Queensland - get ready, set to run down cancer this March!

This March, Cancer Council is launching a brand new campaign, The March Charge, which will motivate people to enlist in the movement to obliterate cancer through one simple act – to run! And Far North Queensland, we’re enlisting you! Set yourself a challenge this March – to tackle cancer head on! We know that around one third of cancers can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle, including being active, eating a healthy diet and maintaining a healthy weight. As such, we’re calling on Far North Queenslanders to unite in the same spirit and push themselves one third further, faster, harder during The March Charge. With around 1280 Far North Queenslanders diagnosed with cancer each year, and around 450 deaths related to the disease, it’s a fight we have to take on. As one of the ambassadors for The March Charge, Jacob Walker is passionate about sharing his story to help inspire others. Last year, at the age of 28 Jacob was diagnosed with a brain tumour. After undergoing hours of surgery and months of recovery he continues to defy the odds, despite the fact there is chance the tumour may grow back.

Jacob set his mind on getting fit and running The New York Marathon, 42 kilometres in length, to support brain cancer research - which he successfully achieved at the end of last year. Like the many thousands of Aussies touched by cancer each year, Jacob’s story is a poignant reminder for all of us to not only cherish, but to take control of our health and fitness. The March Charge isn’t just an event, it’s a movement. It appeals to anyone and everyone at all levels of fitness – inspiring us to not only look after our body, both physically and mentally, but also raise funds for our vital work in cancer research, prevention programs and support services. Let’s all get behind the movement – set ourselves the challenge, and destroy cancer. We can make our kilometres count and register today – every step will take us one step closer to a cancer free future. Registration is easy (and free!) at www.themarchcharge.com.au – from there you’ll get a fundraising page all to yourself to share with friends and family on social media, and raise funds for your Charge! More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org.au or Cancer Council’s 13 11 20.

Then this is the block for you! 45.47 hectares, or around 112 acres of the pristine Oaky Valley awaits a new owner. Accessed from Springmount Rd, 22 km SW of Mareeba, the valley is 30 minutes from Mareeba or Atherton. The valley receives 900-1000 mm of rain per year and has a cooler and drier microclimate from the surrounding farmland reducing the effect of pests and disease on crops. The property is partially fenced into two paddocks, which are made up of mostly flat and gently sloping terrain. The front block is fenced exclusive of the creek and can be utilised all year round without any trouble at all. The rear block incorporates the creek and is perfect to rotate livestock through, as there is almost always water available. There is an excellent bore toward the front of the property which is currently unequipped, but is said to have one of the better flow rates of all bores in the valley. Atherton Tableland Hockey Association is raring to get started again for 2015. The association has planned for some great hockey this year and welcomes both new and experienced players. In 2015 our competition will cater for little players aged from four and a half years, right through to veteran divisions. This year we are offering a couple of different approaches to cater for all players, including a special division for the boys aged 14 to 18 years. The competition for these young men will be inclusive of some of the more experienced men players; acting as team mates and mentors for the younger players. Our aim is a highly competitive four team competition for the boys, with the men responsible for training and guiding the teams throughout the season. It is a unique approach, which will be used for the season and will complement the sometimes struggling men’s competition with the boys gaining experience and confidence to move into the senior divisions. The men’s competition will also by running in 2015; hopefully with three or four teams competing. Our club is also supporting a couple of junior teams playing in the Cairns competition on a Friday night. This will allow the players to have more hockey and experience playing on the Astroturf surface in Cairns. This is not a new concept but this year we are attempting to play under the Atherton name rather than joining a Cairns

team for the season. Our wonderful committee is ensuring the development of all members through... • A successful player development squad operating for eight weeks during the summer months • Coach training days conducted at the club, with our own Coach Development Officer and supported by Qld Hockey experts • The umpires receiving assistance and training by specialists and this year we will see a certification recognised by Qld Hockey given to our dedicated officials. Our club sign on days are on February 14 and 21, at Loder Park, with first games scheduled for March 7, 2015. We encourage all players past and present to sign up for a great season of Hockey. Come along on our working party days on February 7 and 8, to meet and socialise with some great people and start the season having fun. Our club is trying very hard to gain some major local sponsors to assist with the running of the club. We have a range of ideas to encourage sponsors and assist to promote their businesses and would welcome the opportunity to discuss our club potential to any interested sponsors. For more information on the sponsorship opportunities or playing this season join our Facebook page, or give myself a call on 0455 077 054.

It is with great pleasure that the Atherton Tableland Hockey Association recognised the significant contributions of Ms Sharon Voyce to hockey on the Tablelands; through the awarding of Life Membership. Sharon (pictured) commenced her playing career with the Association in 2001 after migrating to Australia from South Africa in 1999. An experienced player, Sharon has not only helped shaped all levels of competition but worked to improve the coaching, umpiring and administration of the Association. Sharon has also played representational hockey with the Veteran Ladies teams for well over 10 years. Not content to rest on her playing laurels, Sharon became actively involved in the Committee in a number of roles inclusive of President from 20062009. In that time Sharon helped the Club achieve a

number of remarkable outcomes inclusive of hosting the U13 Boys State Championships in 2006, securing a number of grants for the purchase of essential equipment and hosting a U18 Belgium Representative team in 2007 and 2008. In 2008,Sharon was also instrumental in introducing the Hookin2Hockey Program, a Coaches Handbook and supporting the introduction of the Women’s Veterans Competition. Throughout this time Sharon also tirelessly worked with the Committee and a dedicated band of volunteers in the planning of the new clubhouse which was

officially opened in 2013. Her ongoing commitment to the game of hockey and her willingness to work behind the scenes wherever and whenever needed has made Sharon a truly worthy recipient of Life Time Membership. The Association, players, volunteers and community pass on their congratulations.

After pioneering the concept last season, the Roosters are returning to the town as part of their pre-season preparations. Kicking off at 4pm this Saturday (at Harry Dalziel Oval), the club’s U/18 side (Spar Atherton/Malanda) will play against Ivanhoes. Game entry will be via a gold coin donation, with all proceeds going toward the Irvinebank State School. If you would like to attend the game by bus with other Roosters fans, you can purchase a ticket for $10 at Arabella Jewellers (Main Street, Atherton). The club has also secured a pre-season trial against arch rival Mareeba in a few weeks.

Tableland Athletics Centre – Profile of an Athlete

“Practice makes Perfect” In 2013 and continued on in 2014, seventeen year old Jennifer Moss gained an A-Squad National ranking for the Hammer throw. The A-Squad recognises ‘Australia’s Top 8’, that is Jennifer has thrown a distance at a recognised carnival which places her as one of the best eight competitors in the whole of Australia for the U18 Women’s Hammer throw. However, nobody could have predicted this honour when Jennifer first joined Tableland Athletics. Entering the club as an 11 year old, Jennifer was a good sprinter yet imperious at high jump, at the time her preferred event. As time progressed Jennifer began showing promise as a Shot putter and Discus thrower through natural strength. From these humble beginnings Jennifer was excited at the prospect of trying Hammer, which is only available to athletes turning 14. Immediately she started to shine with this new event, and with expert coaching from Warren Galligan, a superior throws coach from Cairns the distances and performances started to eventuate. Jennifer holds many local Hammer carnival records, has medalled at Queensland Championships and unsurprisingly has made the final at National Championships.

These achievements came through dedication to improving her technique, achieving the best, to fervent training, inclusive of travelling to Cairns three days a week to train and a determined and motivated attitude. She has continued her strict regime to achieve these high accolades. By Andrew Ford and Penny Goulter, Tableland Athletics Centre.

The Dimbulah Football Club has announced their sign-on date and is looking forward to a bigger and better season this year as part of the Tablelands competition. A fabled sporting club on the Tablelands, the ‘Barras’ will be keen for another committed season together. Across the board, the club had several teams in the finals last season; with goals and wins aplenty for the local supporters. In the U/14’s, the Barras defeated the top-of-thetable Atherton Eagles 3-1 in the final round of the TJSA season; alas, they were denied top spot on goal difference. Success was also found in several other competitions throughout the year, along with tightly fought contests against teams from the Johnston River competition. Long serving Dimbulah club stalwart, Raimond Bin, has been working hard with the Tablelands Junior Soccer Committee (TJSA) to bring kids a range of fun and challenging competitions. In addition to the regular Tablelands’ competition, Mr Bin said the kids would again also be competing against up to five clubs from the Johnstone River (JR) competition throughout year. “Last year was the first time we had games against JR and we received very positive feedback about the competition. JR is keen to continue playing our teams this year and we hope this will be our year to win back the trophies.” He also said that the TJSA has worked hard in the off season to provide greater representative opportunities for all age groups. “We’ll be participating in the Quad Series with Cairns and JR rep teams as usual this year; but we’ve got some exciting opportunities coming up for our older competitive sides. “The schedule is almost finalised and we’ll be

starting early in our season with pre-season Titans rep games against the FNQ Heat on March 15 for our Under 13 and 14 boys teams, as well as our Under 12/13 and 14/15 girls. “We’ve also partnered with Bendigo Bank this year and they’ve helped us purchase new rep jerseys for these older age groups. “As a result, we’ve redesigned our Titans jerseys to be bolder and incorporate both club colours and Bendigo as sponsors. We’re really excited, as is Bendigo Bank; about this season and the kids should be too.” Mr Bin claims that the focus this season will continue to be about providing a fun and enjoyable environment for all kids to play football regardless of age or ability. “Last year we welcomed a former Mareeba side to Dimbulah; as they didn’t want to travel to Cairns to play each weekend. “The kids from that team really enjoyed the competition and ended up winning the local grand final. They’re keen to return this year and take part in the bigger and better 2015 season. “My club will always keep our door open and welcome any teams or players who want to be a part of Tablelands football. “Girls especially should be excited, as there will be opportunities for them; from under 10 and up, to play in an all girls’ side against other all female teams from Cairns and JR. “The Tablelands competition is all about enabling kids to play our great game and, after the success of the Socceroos in the Asian Cup, we hope to see more kids register with us.” The Dimbulah Football Club sign-on will take place on Saturday February 14th at the Dimbulah Football grounds between 9am and 12 noon. The club is looking forward to welcoming new and existing players to the 2015 season, starting February 28.

ATHERTON continued their New Year renaissance with a solid return to first grade, easily defeating United by eight wickets at Griffiths Park. After winning the toss and batting, the hosts were derailed by the Atherton bowling attack and finished on 5/142; without some mid-innings cameos, it would have been a whole lot less. The visitors, riding high after success in the T/20 com-

petition, cantered to victory. With Fox again tormenting bowlers, there was only ever likely to be one result. None of the United bowlers ever look likely of causing a capitulation, with overall economy across the board lacking polish. Atherton will be keen to pencil in a few more convincing victories ahead of the finals, which they would fancy their chances in.

Bulls hit Borzi Park for pre-season By Justin Fris

MUFC conducted their first week of pre-season training at Borzi Park, in the first step of their 2015 title defence. Most of the group had competed in a six-a-side competition over the break in a bid to maintain fitness; however last Tuesday marked the first official commitment. MUFC Coaching and Player Development Coordinator Alex Srhoj said he was pleased with the attitude from all players during the week. “The first week of training was very positive,” he said. “The attitude across all the divisions has been really good. “We had about 25 of our senior players at Tuesday’s session and a really good turn out with our ladies squad.” Srhoj, a firm believer of match simulation in his sessions, said the next five weeks would see all senior players conditioned for how he would like them to play. “All of the sessions have seen the players with a ball

at their feet,” he said. “Our sessions are all based around football and the next five weeks our players will be learning and conditioning themselves. “We’ve had the players doing a lot of short sharp match simulation drills (1v1, 4v4 etc), where they work very hard for a short burst, then get a break. “We’ve actually had to pull up some of the players, as they wish to train longer than the 90 minute session; such is their enthusiasm.” Srhoj said he was delighted that David Ruiz would be returning to the senior squad, as he would work well with emerging dynamo Ben Fresta. Preliminary details have also been announced for the pre-season MAZDA Cup competition, which will be held on March 7, at Borzi Park. Mareeba will host a day-long feast of football; which will not only benefit the club, but is likely to inject money into the town through accommodation and hospitality. The competition is traditionally held over two-days. Alex Srhoj (left) chats with members of the senior squad.

To all FNQ and Tablelands horse lovers A final plea is being sounded out for all horse lovers to come together and help preserve the ‘All Breeds Horse Show Spectacular’; which is currently under serious doubt. In an open letter to the all members of the horse community, Jenny Lott has called for people to come together and lighten the load across the board. “It is with sadness that I write this letter; it is in effect, a last ditch effort to communicate with previous members or supporters of the All Breeds Horse Show Spectacular, held at Kerribee Park; third weekend in June, 20 and 21,” she said. “I write on behalf of the All Breed's Committee responsible for organising this year's show, which will not happen, if we cannot get some commitment to help spread the work load, before our next meeting at the end of Feb. “Six members turned up to our advertised AGM; five seriously older ladies and a young new mum; with the best will in the world. “We cannot produce this show on our own, complying with the many regulations, a nightmare amount of paperwork, insurance costs, animal and

people medical facilities, publicity and printing. I could go on and on, plus the physical building of rings and courses. “We are on track, with most judges sorted and airfare and accommodation for some. “We desperately need co-ordinators for fundraising, [entry to the show for spectators is free] sponsorship, publicity, volunteers on the days etc for this massive four ring show. “The show itself is unique in that it caters for every type of horse. Ridden, in hand or driven in harness, from the gentle giant clydesdales, magnificent andelusians, graceful arabians, proud thoroughbreds; to the tough welsh ponies, shetlands and little miniatures, the size of a sheepdog,” Members and supporters are invited to attend the Anthill Hotel (Mareeba) on February 28, from 1pm in the dining hall. If you would like to volunteer your services to keep the event alive, please contact Ms Lott via email:jennylott@skymesh.com.au. So if you are keen to tradition alive, please attend the event.
