Sea of red engulfs FNQ

Billy Gordon was all smiles on election day

Shane Knuth casts his vote on Saturday

By Justin Fris

THE ALP completed one of the greatest political resurrections since Federation last Saturday night; and is within touching distance of potentially forming government. Three years on from one of their heaviest defeats in history, voters deserted the LNP across the Far North, with the ALP claiming three of the four seats on offer. In Cook, ALP candidate Billy Gordon (9,028 votes) had a 15% swing in his favour

after the first hour of counting, with translated into a sizeable two-party preferred win over David Kempton (6,109). Dalrymple offered no such surprise in the overall result, with KAP Member Shane Knuth coasting to victory over LNP candidate Liz Schmidt. Mr Knuth, who won his third Dalrymple election in a row, was only one of three independents elected on Saturday. If either the ALP or LNP are unable to form government in their own right, Mr

Knuth and his fellow independents will effectively play the role of ‘kingmaker’ in a bid for government to be formed. By far the closest electorate in the Far North was Barron River, with the ALP candidate Craig Crawford leading Michael Trout by 1,757 votes, (two party preferred) with 78% of the vote counted. Mr Trout, who at time of printing lead the primary vote by 566 votes, conceded defeat on Monday morning (due to preference voting).

One interesting aspect of the Barron River count was the presence of the Greens and Palmer United parties. Greens candidate Noel Castley-Wright ensured his party received over 10 per cent of the primary vote, while PUP candidate Andrew Schebella achieved a positive swing in his first campaign. All electoral information and vote tallies within this article were current and correct as of 5pm, February 1. Neither ALP or LNP has claimed outright victory at State level.

Mine’s bigger than yours!

Connie Mete with the 1.728kg mango picked on her property.

By Carl Portella

The mango season has almost come to an end; but for a few dedicated farmers and back yard mango growers, the competition to find the biggest mango in the region has stirred some emotional responses from passionate mangoteers. The response to our story two weeks ago (about searching for the region’s biggest KP mango) which weighed in at a whopping 1.5kg, made growers more aware of their own crops; and went in search of their own ‘Whopper’. Vince and Connie Mete, who have a property on Gilmore Road, have indeed found what we believe is the largest KP mango in the region, thus far. Also harvested on the final day of the mango season

it weighed in at 1.728kg, 228 grams more than the Srhoj mango. The competition has officially begun in earnest! So to all budding mango growers (whether you‘re a farmer or just have a mango tree in your back yard); nurture it, water it, fertilize it, look after it. In fact, you could set up a sound system and play music to your mangoes; as in October this year, we will introduce the inaugural KP Mango Competition.

ST Thomas’s Parish School began a new chapter of school history last Tuesday, with their prep students beginning their primary school education. There were plenty of smiles, lunch boxes and tucked in uniforms, as some students met their teachers for the first time. Along with new prep students joining the school, three new teachers have been appointed for 2015: Mrs Michelle Seravelli, Miss Jenna Armour and Mrs Nikolai Ballin. School Principal Rita Petersen said she was ‘very impressed’ at how the school year has begun, having been to most classes to see how everyone is settling in. “We look to have around 410 students at our school this year,” she

said. “Upcoming, we have some information sessions in weeks two and three for our parents, who would like to meet with their child’s new teacher. “Despite these sessions, we very much have an ‘open door’ policy for all of our parents and they are welcome to speak with our staff at any time.” 2015 will be exciting for everyone within the St Thomas’s community, with several exciting events planned. Children between year four and six will commence swimming lessons this week, which are designed to improve water awareness and safety. St Thomas’s chess campaign has also begun under the guidance of Michael Harnishfeger, with the school keen to build on its impressive showing at last year’s state championships in Brisbane.

Mareeba still a hub for air cadets By Justin Fris

AFTER 59 years (and still going strong), Mareeba continues to be a hub for Australian Air Force Cadets. Success within the 106 squadron reached dizzying heights last year, with five cadets receiving flying scholarships; a record for the facility. For flight lieutenant (AAFC, Commanding Officer-106 squadron and No.1 wing) Stephen Fowler, the camaraderie between all cadets is fantastic. “All of our cadets get along very well,” he said. “We have a familylike atmosphere, a large variety of activities for our cadets, along with a strict behavioural policy. “Our cadets are able to learn their material in our classrooms and then access information online, should they need it.” FLTLT Fowler said the cadets had up to 50 subjects to choose during four levels of training. These ranged from firearm training, survival training and also advanced navigational techniques. “Our cadets range between the ages of 13 and 20 years of age,” he said. “Although in terms of recruiting, it is between the ages of 13 and 17. “Each squadron is all-inclusive (male and female) and there are 170 AAFC squads across Australia.

“This translates to 8000 cadets and instructors, which is roughly 2/3 the size of the Australian Air Force. “Lots of our cadets eventually go to defence jobs, as being a cadet is a good pathway.“Some examples of former cadets in our town include current MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore and Magistrate Tom Braes.” In terms of demographics, 50 per cent of the cadets are based in Mareeba. The other half are made up from over 20 towns. FLTLT Fowler said he was keen for both cadets and volunteers to join his squadron for the upcoming year. “We are keen for anyone on the Tablelands to join if they are interested; especially indigenous youth,” he said. Any activity within any level is documented meticulously. In order for an activity to be approved, a full checklist and risk management assessment needs to be kept. If no approval is given, the activity does not go ahead. A new online server called ‘Cadet 1’ provides an unparalleled experience for cadets. Within the portal, each cadet can access event and personal information that directly affects them. If you are keen to join the air cadets, contact FLTLT Fowler on 0437 774 536.

ATHERTON State High School student Georgia Whybird is emerging as one of the brightest young minds on the Tablelands. After a stellar academic year in 2014, Georgia was announced as the TRC’s ‘Young Citizen of the Year’ on Australia Day. Georgia begins 2015 as Atherton SHS’s School Captain. Last year, Georgia helped organise several school events designed to help those who needed it. The Atherton faithful (along with TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long and councillors) were able to acknowledge Georgia on Australia Day, but many walked away without knowing the full story. After support from KAP MP Shane Knuth, Georgia’s online nomination for Qld Youth Parliament was accepted. She duly went forth and represented Dalrymple at youth level and outlined the process during this time. “During youth parliament, we would write bills and amendments on a series of provided areas and topics,” she said. “We were also split into groups, spending time in both ‘Government’ and ‘Opposition’. I was lucky enough to be in ‘Government’ and we won all of our bills. “These bills were then passed up toward state parliament, and dealt with people like Campbell Newman.” But Georgia’s tilt at the cloud nine didn’t end there. As one of 10 from across Australia, she headed to the United Nations in New York City with her grandmother; to represent Australia (along with Russia for a few activities) at the Global Youth Leadership Forum. “I was placed in a women and children’s rights group and worked with several people from all over the world,” she said. “Speaking with people from countries a lot smaller than us, it was really interesting to hear about their point of view. “I also ended up representing Russia for a portion of the forum. It was important to emphasise while undertaking the material and prioritise, as issues at the forefront of Russia do not always share the same priority in other countries.” With both her mother and father as local school principals, education appears to have been at the forefront of

New arrivals at Mareeba State School By Justin Fris

MAREEBA State School has been abuzz with activity recently, with fresh faces lining the schoolyard last Tuesday. A few days prior, the school held a special lunchtime function for kids and parents. As a hearty BBQ wafted across the air, children and parents across all ages were introduced to their teachers for the upcoming year. This overwhelming feel of positivity was passed on to the school’s youngest students, who were beginning their first ever day of school. One constant during conversations with families was the sheer diversity of generation; grandparents, parents and children, all together supporting each other. It was then on to parade, where School Principal Mandy Whybird addressed the senior grades for the first time in 2015. Mrs Whybird praised the children on the positive start to the year, with behaviour and uniform exemplary during the assembly. The future looks bright for the school, which are getting back into the groove of another full slate of activities and events. The fabled ‘Attendance Accord’ is also in swing for another year. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said the new alliance would been residents will be able to receive free alerts, which can be set via numerous platforms. “The alerts are locationbased, so you only receive warnings if your residential address may be impacted. The alerts are sent by email, SMS to your mobile, or voice message to a landline,” Mayor Gilmore said. “If you choose both the SMS and landline options, only extreme alerts will be sent to your landline. EWN sends alerts based on potentially dangerous weather events. “The alerts cover weather events such as: hail and severe thunderstorms, destructive winds and cyclones, and floods from a number of different sources.” Mayor Gilmore added that preparation during the wet season was imperative; and encouraged residents to prepare earnestly. “The key measure in weathering a natural disaster is to prepare in advance. This is about protecting residents and their property from floods and severe weather and will give people more time to take appropriate actions to protect their assets,” he said. “Council has recently created a Disaster Management Facebook page to be activated and updated in the event of an emergency.”

Women, you can prebook cancer screening THE Queensland Cancer Council has welcomed a new initiative for women, which allows them to pre-book appoints for breast cancer checks. After a promising trial (where usability had increased threefold), Queensland women will now have greater flexibility for all concerned. QCC Spokeswoman Katie Clift said the new move would be extremely beneficial and potentially save lives of several Queenslanders. “Our research shows women screened by BreastScreen Queensland have better cancer survival prospects than those not screened,” Ms Clift said. “Detecting breast cancer early is crucial for survival and improving quality of life – any

initiative that aims to increase uptake of screening is imperative for our State. “Currently, only about 57 per cent of eligible Queensland women get free mammograms every two years through BreastScreen Queensland. “While some women are screened privately, there is concern that many others may be missing out or failing to follow up on reminder notices. Knowing that an appointment has already been made and set aside will make it much easier for many women to participate in recommended breast screening. “Allowing women to make their screening bookings online will also improve uptake rates – it’s easy, convenient and can be synced to their schedule.”

Crawford’s Barron River battle

Shane’s high five in Dalrymple SHANE Knuth etched himself into Queensland political folklore after a fifth consecutive election victory. Winning in his third term in Dalrymple, Mr Knuth also won in the old seat of Charters Towers in both 2004 and 2006. After an initial swing toward the LNP, Mr Knuth pulled away to record a comfortable win over Liz Schmidt. With preferences only aiding his position, Mr Knuth had a 4,698 vote lead (66.8 per cent of the vote), with 52 per cent of the electorate tallied. The ALP again failed to make an impression with the Dalrymple electorate, with ALP candidate Leanne Kettleton only polling 23.6 per cent of the primary

vote. Greens candidate Valerie Weier only polled 699 votes, but was definitely was a welcomed addition to the electorate; and party officials praised her hard work on Saturday.

ALP candidate Craig Crawford has won a titanic battle for Barron River against the LNP’s Michael Trout. With 78% of the vote counted, Mr Crawford was trailing the primary vote slightly, but well ahead on the two-party preferred preference vote. Mr Trout conceaded early on Monday morning and Mr Crawford wished Trout and his electorate staff well, via social media. Also in a statement to his supporters on social media, Mr Crawford thanked everyone who supported him. “I’ve had a great reception wherever I’ve gone- thanks to everyone,” he said. Under Noel Castley-Wright, the Greens increased their primary vote by 1 per cent. Spending the majority of his time in Kuranda on polling day, Mr Castley-Wright said he had noticed a change during the campaign. “It has been a pleasant morning,” he said. “We are still very much a young party, but a positive result today would definitely help the party grow.” Palmer United Party candidate Andrew Schebella recorded a positive swing for his party, in their first real tilt community in the region. A final result should be declared within days, with both major political parties desperate for victory.

QLD STATE ELECTION

Cook electorate swings back to Labor David Kempton stares forlornly as results filtered through on Saturday night in Mareeba.

Lee Marriott (KAP), Jason Booth (PUP) and Billy Gordon (ALP) on Election Day. By Justin Fris

COOK electorate voters installed ALP candidate Billy Gordon as the new Member for Cook on Saturday night. Despite an enterprising three years in our region, David Kempton was unable to win a second term in the seat. Mr Kempton polled strongly in all Mareeba booths, Cooktown and Port Douglas; but his achilles heel came in the northern outposts of the electorate. Mr Gordon polled heavily in several remote communities, along with Thursday Island and Weipa. He said he had mixed emotions during Election Day. “I was actually driving down the Kuranda Range back to Cairns, when I got a call from one of my supporters informing me of the result,” he said. “We had a centralised tally room at the function I was at (in Cairns) and we knew the swing was on. “In a few days, I will sit down with other members of the northern region and determine certain specifics. When elected three years ago Mr Kempton moved the electorate office to Mareeba, but Mr Gordon was unsure if the electorate office

would now remain in Mareeba until he meets with fellow labor MP’s. “It was a new experience for all of us, but for me, it was a tremendous sense of obligation and responsibility. ‘I’ve been given a great honour and I’m very humbled by it.” On the flip side of the coin, Mr Kempton said he is ‘very concerned’ about the future level of representation that major towns will now receive within the electorate. “I am very pleased with the response in Mareeba, Port Douglas and Cooktown; and I was able to reverse a state trend,” he said. “I could not hold my numbers in the remote communities, despite the enormous effort I put into freehold housing and economic development. “I remain very concerned about the level of representation that major towns will now receive.“I am also very concerned about the major infrastructure projects I worked so hard for, now at risk.” Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he would be keen to meet with Mr Gordon in coming weeks; and hoped to have a productive relationship with him. “Elections tend to reveal the wants, needs and expectations of the community and this

election has been no different. “Over the past year, I have had a cordial and productive relationship with David Kempton; and I wish him well in the future. “I trust that I will have an equally cordial and productive relationship with the new member for Cook, Mr Billy Gordon. “I will be in contact with Mr Gordon in the near future to offer him a briefing on the issues important to the Mareeba Shire Council; including my expectation that the funding recently announced from the ‘Royalties for the Regions’ fund for the Mareeba sewerage plant and the Mareeba Aerodrome redevelopment will be honoured.” KAP candidate Lee Marriott had a productive result during his first electoral campaign, chalking up 12.5 per cent of the primary vote. PUP candidate Jason Booth had a steady introduction to state politics, slighting nudging the magical six percent of the primary vote. In a plus for democracy, there were only 470 informal votes recorded within the entire electorate. Greens candidate Darryl Desjardin stabilised the party’s footing within Cook, while independent Michael Angelo Newie’s vision barely scratched the surface with voters.

Campaign afterthoughts by Noeline Ikin... The LNP campaign in Cook made an early decision to stay clean and stay on positive local messages. Over the last three years David Kempton achieved a lot for the seat of Cook in projects, legislative changes to reduce obstruction to sensible business, and changing the stereotype and attitudes southern decision makers hold about north Queensland and Cape York. He did the hard work to ‘prepare the ground’, had sown the seeds and had a great strike of approvals for major infrastructure for the region, only to be slashed down on Saturday night. Denying him the opportunity to fully bear fruit for our community and the local economy. Many people say they dislike the negativity in politics and disengage from the discussion as a result – so rather than explore the argument to seek fact, people perhaps threw their hands in the air and walked away in this election with a sour taste for politics full stop. The LNP local campaign was overrun by the negative ‘State’ campaigns run by Unions and minor parties. The danger to a political party in running these negative campaigns is that people judge the party as being ‘dirty’ and the support will ‘boomerang’ or go against them. Thus, the effectiveness of Unions in carrying out the most harmful negative attacks. The evidence of this tactic being very clear even in our own area where the PUP and KAP direct negative attacks to the LNP have resulted in a poor result for the party, and the Unions running an in-direct negative attack (on behalf of Labor) have resulted in a major landslide for Labor. The thing that surprises me the most, is that Mareeba especially, had Union representatives in from Melbourne and Hobart holding placards and handing out at booths and locals seemed to accept this southern push on their mind set. So, does the average person realise they are constantly being manipulated by these negative attacks? Anyone who feels like their brain has been through a sieve with this election has probably had their mind set manipulated by the ‘sub-conscious’ negative campaigns. [Research shows that our brains process information both consciously and sub-consciously. When we get sick of the negativity and throw our hands in the air we still non-consciously register the ‘message’. People ‘feel’ negative but can’t really explain in detail why, or have throw away lines rather than fact for the way they feel. Negative feelings also seem to register to the sub-conscious mind more than positive messages.] I wish I could say that the negative messages in politics will end, especially as so many of us suggest that we are disgusted by its usage. But so long as the average person allows themselves to be manipulated by the psychology behind them, these negative political messages will remain. Additionally people seem to be less and less aware of what is in their own backyard and more and more approaching elections focussing on State or National leaders, that can only provide debate on a few broad issues, rather than the rich diversity of issues and projects that can be debated at the local campaign level. A return to basics and a better understanding of how policy decision really affects us personally is really needed. To do that, the average person needs to be open to local debate and local discussion.

Australia Day award winners – Tablelands Regional Council By Justin Fris

THE Tablelands Regional Council recognised several hard working individuals and organisations on Australia Day at the Atherton International Club. Welcoming the audience as they filtered through to their seats, the Tablelands Regional Brass Band belted through three Aussie classics, which began to stir the passion in the room. Demographics of the audience were definitely older, although several younger children eagerly waved tiny flags prior to the of-

ficial opening. Anchored by MC Peter Axford and TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long, tales of Australia’s past and future flowed freely. Mayor Lee Long said she was pleased to be in attendance and said Australia Day was a day of reflection for many of us. “Australia Day is a day to reflect, ponder, remember and appreciate the various freedoms and opportunities provided to us. “I firmly believe there is no higher honour than being awarded on Australia Day.” Robert Watkins was rewarded for his commitment to the commerce industry. Mr Watkins, who has been on the radar since 2009 with his ‘Banana Blankey’ creation. This dedication culminated in his creation of the world’s first banana harvester. Ravenshoe Community Garden

was rewarded for their dedication to the community, providing an initiative experience for those who enjoy gardening and eating healthy. Sport was also recognised, with Kristen Wadley and Darren Ball collecting awards for the junior and senior categories respectively. Tastes of the Tablelands, which was such a hit last year, was acknowledged for their outstanding community event. With over 6500 people attending the 2014 festival, the event impressed judges with its ability to attract people from other regions. Mayor Lee Long then presided over a citizenship ceremony, where 13 invdiduals were officially announced as new Australian citizens. A feel good story of the day was Georgia Whybird, who was recognised by Mayor Lee Long as ‘Young Citizen’ of the year.

Georgia, a keen musician and swimmer, represented Dalrymple in Qld’s youth parliament last year, amidst a busy schedule. The jewel in the ceremony’s crown was the announcement of ‘Citizen of the Year’, which was specially awarded to Jim and Daphne Zipperer. Both were emotional during their acceptance speeches, clearly humbled by their nomination. Mrs Zipperer encouraged everyone in the audience to volunteer, as she believes the satisfaction in helping people is unsurpassable. It should also be noted the ceremony was littered with no shows; along with a satirical segment which wouldn’t have gone down well with advocates against drunk driving. Those minor blips failed to dampen the spirit of the audience, who warmly celebrated all those who had achieved so much.S

JOHN DOYLE’S DRAY WHEEL

Back in 1884 when Herberton was 4 years old, it was full of vitality because of the tin discoveries. Businesses in Herberton were anxious that their town should be linked with other mining fields further in the interior. One of the North’s finest bushmen was engaged to find such a route. This was John Doyle, and he marked the dray route from Herberton to Georgetown. John Doyle also blazed a track from Cairns to the gold rush site at North Johnstone, later used for the telegraph line, and he led the party that found the track up the range from Trinity Bay to Thornborough. Nominees for ‘Event of the Year’, which was won by ‘Tastes of the Tablelands’

Jim Zipperer reflects, after both he and his wife are awarded ‘Citizen of the Year’

John Doyle married in Herberton and had three children. In his later life he retired to Mareeba where we have named a street after him. The badly deteriorated metal rimmed wooden wheel from his dray was found some years ago in the backyard of where he had been living. A conservation process was applied to the wheel and it now rests in the Explorers’ Display at The Mareeba Heritage Museum. Come along to visit and brush up on our fascinating past history.

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS

New on the Rising Sun screen this week is the excellent drama UNBROKEN. Shot in Australia and based on a true story. UNBROKEN, has had excellent reviews since its recent world premiere here in Australia and is both a work of art and love from director Angelina Jolie. It will appeal to discerning film goers and anyone who appreciates a powerful human drama, set during WWII. One of the most talked about films of

UNBROKEN

A larrikin New York kid of Italian descent, Louis Zamperini (Jack O'Connell), becomes an Olympic runner but when World War II breaks out he ends up in the US Air Force. On a search mission for a lost US aircraft over the Pacific, his damaged, barely airworthy plane, The Green Hornet, goes down into the ocean and after enduring 47 days in a small dinghy, Zamperini and the only other survivor, Russell Allen 'Phil' Phillips (Domnhall Gleeson) are captured by the Japanese. He endures further hardships and torture as a POW, but he never gives up hope. (Based on a true story.) Review by Louise Keller: Courage, determination and the sheer will to survive are the key elements that propel Louis Zamperini to a life of glory, reinforcing the words his brother tells him about the worthwhile nature of a moment of pain. While his achievements as an Olympic athlete are a clear indicator of glory, his survival on a life-raft for 47 long days on a merciless ocean and as an abused POW at the hands of a brutal Japanese commander during WW2 herald an even greater achievement. Resilience and a willingness to forgive are the moral threads of this true-life personal story that Angelina Jolie has brought to the screen in a riveting, involving and powerful film. Adapting Laura Hillenbrand's novel, four big gun screenwriters (Joel and Ethan Coen, Richard Gravenese and William Nicholson) collaborate to deliver a potent screenplay, telling the story simply and effectively. The film begins high in the clouds in a sky crowded with warplanes and gunfire during WWII. Louis (Jack O'Connell) is in one of these planes as bombs drop and flak whizzes around him. Relief comes

the year continues on the Mareeba big screen this weekend. Russell's Crowe's epic historical drama, THE WATER DIVINER, is an apt movie for the 100th anniversary year of Gallpoli. Also continuing is the excellent true story of THE IMITATION GAME – a gripping drama again set during the war. On Sunday, February 8, there's a special family fun day at the Rising Sun Cinema. Top family movies of the summer will

by way of a flashback to his childhood, describing his Italian heritage, his relationships with his parents and adored older brother Pete (Alex Russell) who always encourages him. 'If you can take it; you can make it.' Winning a place on the track team follows - and the Olympics. The sequence in the rubber lifeboat tossed relentlessly on the waves of the ocean after a crash landing, is harrowing. At the mercy of enemy planes, circling sharks, extreme weather conditions and little water, Louis, Phil (Domhnall Gleeson) and another survivor cling to life - clutching at passing seagulls and stray fish, while trying to keep their minds sharp. The good news of being rescued is dampened by the fact that their rescuers are the enemy. There is worse to come. The cruelty of the treatment at the POW camp is hard to watch as Louis and the other prisoners assume skeletal proportions. Most disturbing is the erratic behaviour, unconscionable beatings and psychological torture by the sadistic Japanese commanding officer Watanabe (composer Miyavi in a haunting screen debut), who targets Louis for deep-seated reasons that we can only vaguely imagine. The scene in which Watanabe forces the entire battalion to punch Louis in the face one by one is horrific. O'Connell is superb as Louis; we are constantly able to empathise with him. Also excellent is Domhnall Gleeson and the other cast members. Worthy of note is Alexandre Desplat's mesmerising dramatic score and Roger Deakin's assured cinematography that captures the stark conditions with such clarity. Shot entirely in Australia, it is fitting that the film's World Premiere was held here. It is rare that the celebrity and profile of the director outshines that of the film's stars, but there is little doubt that it is Jolie's name that is the drawcard. Clearly a project of love, she directs her second film with the unbeatable combination of passion and a clear vision.

Turkish Major Hasan (Yilmaz Erdogan), both of whom are surprisingly helpful. Not so helpful is British Captain Charles Brindley (Dan Wyllie). (Inspired by a true story.)

THE IMITATION GAME

Against considerable odds and obstacles, English mathematician, Alan Turing (Benedict Cumberbatch), leads a top secret team in the English countryside that cracks the German's fearsome Enigma code during World War II. His success is estimated to have shortened the war by two years and saved 14 million lives, yet Turing's sexuality overshadows his achievements in the conservative era of his time. (Based on a true story.)

THE WATER DIVINER

When four years after the battle of Gallipoli his wife Eliza (Jacqueline Mackenzie) begs him to bring back their sons, Aussie father of three, Connor (Russell Crowe) travels to Turkey to search for them - or their remains. En route, he encounters Turkish war widow Ayshe (Olga Kurylenko) and

1. Preheat oven to 120C. Lightly grease a baking tray and line with baking paper. Whisk egg whites and a pinch of salt in an electric mixer until soft peaks form, then gradually add sugar and whisk until stiff and glossy. Fold in cornflour, vinegar and rind, then coconut and spoon onto baking tray. Bake until crisp on the outside, but not coloured, turn off oven and cool completely in oven. 2. Process passionfruit in a food processor to crack seeds, strain into a saucepan and return a third of the seeds to the juice. Add sugar and vanilla seeds, stirring over medium-high heat to dissolve sugar, bring to the boil and cook until jammy. Remove from heat, stir in lime juice, then refrigerate until cooled and set. 3. Whisk crème fraîche and icing sugar in a bowl to soft peaks, fold in a third of the passionfruit jam, then pile onto pavlova shell. Top with lychees and shaved coconut, and serve immediately with remaining passionfruit jam.

Golf club thankful for Dad’s Army weekly support THE Mareeba Golf Club is privileged, proud and thankful to have "Dads Army", as a regular group of volunteers, young at heart and younger, who turn up week in and week out to help out Kev Moore and Tony Lovatt, keep the Mareeba Golf Club Course in top condition. This week was no different to

their usual volunteers weeks, but with the exception of celebrating John Debel and Lou Schelack's birthday's. In keeping with the normal practice of a nice smoko and cuppa, the other usual suspects also turned up to share and enjoy the birthday cake put on for them.

EXPRESS sPORT MUFC coaches learn from the best during training workshop

Chris Collins addresses the coaching group.

By Justin Fris

ASPIRING youth level football coaches attended a coaching course last weekend at Mareeba United Football Club. Held over two days at Borzi Park, the coaches were guided through both practical and theory concepts by experienced FFA accredited official, Chris Collins. All coaches who signed up with the course were allocated a coaching workbook, in a bid to achieve their game training certificate.

Collins had a fantastic rapport with the group from the outset and spoke about the importance of young footballers developing technical ability between the ages of nine and 13. “Certain techniques (like first touch) need to be practiced during this time; as by the time the player reaches the age of 15, they can fall a little bit off the pace if they haven’t mastered this skill,” he said. As the presentation developed, Collins was able to delve further into the minds of the group. He compared the bare essentials of youth foot-

ball coaching as ‘the building blocks’, which referred to building strong foundations for the long-term. Before a house is built, it needs to be built on foundations,” he said. “It’s also important not to build those foundations on quick sand.” The importance of making training enjoyable and game-related was also covered, along with the ideal way to perfect a half-time team talk in the dressing room. But it was the discussion about the various phases of a match which engaged the coaches

RHEE Tae Kwon Do is the most powerful art of self-defence. It involves dynamic techniques and unarmed combat for self-defence purposes, combining the skilled application of powerful kicks and blocks. Whee Tae Kwon Do has been established in Mareeba and the Tablelands for over 30 years, seeing many families and friends train together; disciplining the body and mind, while learning the art of self-defence. Other benefits gained include improved coordination, concentration and fitness. All fitness levels are encouraged to come along. Rhee Tae Kwon Do is an activity the whole family can do together and it offers

special packages for families. Classes are held on Monday and Thursday nights from 6.30-7.30pm at the old Mareeba Shire Hall (PCYC Hall) behind Mitre 10 in Walsh Street, Mareeba. All classes are taught by fully qualified male and female black belt instructors and before joining, anyone interested is invited to come along and give it a go with no charge. Classes recommenced on January 20 and an enrolment day is being held at the Mareeba Shire Hall, this Saturday, February 7, from 2 to 4pm. Everyone is invited to attend. For morning information please call Frank on 4092 3894 or 0418 774 824; Come along and be a part of it.

the most. Collins highlighted three phases: BP (ball possession), BPO (ball possession opposition) and T (transition). Coaches were informed about possible things to include a training session; and the importance of sticking to a philosophy in a match. Typically (regardless of sport), training will begin with a solid warm up and the coach will have a chat about their desired outcomes for the session. From there, players will conduct a series of positioning exercises.

TALENTED youth basketball player Daniel Ruggeri has recently returned from playing against some of the finest players in Queensland. Held in Ipswich, Ruggeri and his Far North teammates played a series of matches against regional representative teams. The first match of tournament pitted the northerners against the tournament hosts, which proved a unique challenge for the team. “Ipswich had a big team and they were really dominate around the glass,” he said. “They definitely were strong with offensive rebounds, whereas we were more about quick passing.” Matches came thick and fast, with the team playing a match nearly every day. Ruggeri and his teammates would watch other matches and have a shoot around during breaks. “Our following game against Toowoomba was definitely a match we should have won,” he said. “It was just one of those days where shots weren’t going in; but we dominated general play.” The Northerners then came face to face with the powerful Gold Coast Seahawks, who dished out a basketball lesson to them. “The Seahawks were a really powerful team and beat us by about 30 points,” he said. “They had one

guy who was lights out all game, even with coach putting our best defender on to guard him.” Despite mix fortunes at the tournament, Ruggeri said he took a great deal out of his time away and enjoyed meeting new people. “It was a really good feeling to represent the region,” he said. “Everyone was together and we got to meet new people- including new referees.” Prior to any game, Ruggeri likes to get to a game about two hours before tip-off. Headphones in, he will have a pre-game shoot around with his teammates and go over set plays. “Coach was really good at settling us, especially during time-outs,” he said. “He gave everyone equal playing time and if we had a good look (offensively), he would encourage us to go for a three-point shot.” Starting his final high school year at St Stephens, Ruggeri is keen to represent Peninsula later in the year, along with maintaining his academic commitments. Several NCAA (American college) officials were at the tournament observing the games; which is something that excited Ruggeri. “(Going to) College would be definitely something I would like to do one day,” he said. “I’m really keen for the upcoming season to begin.” Ruggeri’s journey, which began in Mareeba, may just one day lead to the NCAA’s ‘final four’ of the ‘March Madness’ tournament.

Bandits fire blanks in Port Douglas By Justin Fris

THE Mareeba Bandits failed to cash in on their recent heroics, after falling runs short on Sunday in Port Douglas. After winning the toss, the hosts toiled their way through oppressive conditions, despite close checking from the experienced bowling attack. Port Douglas finished on 8/131, but in truth it flattered the home side. The Bandits’ bowlers would have been filthy with their line and length, conceding a staggering 31 runs in sundries. Despite the indifferent performance across the board, ‘Bomber’ Adams (4/18, off 6 overs), Adam Roy (1/15, off 5) and Brett Brewer (1/11 off 6) kept the visitors with a sniff of victory. Chasing 132 for victory off 180 balls, the Bandits never got into rhythm, with opening pair Taylor and Payne unable to dispatch the bowling on a regular basis. This saw the introduction of Brendan Falvo, who began his first match as the club’s number three batsman. In a fantastic leap of faith, Falvo continues to grasp

every opportunity given to him. As the match wore on, the conditions worsened for both sides. Spectators sought refuge under any shade possible, while the players had to wear sweat strapped to their backs. Adam Roy was also a shining light with the bat, as he tried in vain to lift his side to the required run-rate, as wickets crumbled around him. The Bandits’ rearguard could only cope with so much pressure, before they eventually collapsed for 86 all-out. Mareeba will return to Kerribee Park this Sunday, where they will entertain Mulgrave from 1pm. Over the next month, the Bandits will face several key tests in the run toward the finals series. A tricky test away to United looms for the Bandits, who will be eager to improve their away form. Innisfail will also make the lengthy trip to Kerribee Park, before the Bandits will head the following way a week later; going toe to toe with Tully. It will be a true test of character for the players.

Atherton supreme in T/20 competition By Justin Fris

ATHERTON is the toast of T20 cricket on the Tablelands, after a stirring seven wicket win over Norths recently in the Cairns-based competition. A hybrid form of cricket which originated in England is now well and truly entrenched within the Far North’s sporting landscape. Norths made 9/103 during their dig, after batting first. Ever the optimists, Atherton appeared capable of chasing

down the target. On the back of a superb innings by Gerard Fox (who also plays for Qld Country), Atherton were able to chase down the 104 target with relative ease. It made for a heartbreaking day for Norths, who were also pipped by Mareeba in their 3rd grade match up against Mareeba on the road. Atherton’s success will hopefully inspire other clubs on the Tablelands for greater success and become a true hotbed for the game.
