Off and racing in 2015!
As thousands of locals flocked to the Mareeba Turf Club on Boxing Day for the traditional race meeting, local politicians were unaware a race of their own would begin in under a fortnight. The battle for the seats of Barron River, Cook and Dalrymple are beginning to heat up. (Photo by Peter Roy)
Snap election By Justin Fris
QUEENSLANDERS will be going to the polls on Saturday January 31 after LNP Premier Campbell Newman called a snap state election last Tuesday. In 2012, Mr Newman rode into power with a 78-7 majority, which translated in a gain of 34 seats from 2009. Conversely, the Labor (Bligh) Government were dished a hiding, falling from 51 seats to 7. Katter’s Australia Party also gained electoral ground, as voters sought a new alternative.
The landscape has changed dramatically across Queensland since that night, with both major political parties not taking a backward step. Labor, battered and bruised from two heavy defeats at Federal and State level, have slowly put humpty dumpty back together again over the last couple of years. Electricity prices and unemployment have been thorns in Mr Newman’s tenure, with voters regularly voicing their anger in the streets and on social media. Whether the addition of the Abbott Government at Federal level will help or hinder

Mr Newman; time will only tell. Locally, three electorates will be intently fought out on the Tablelands. None are considered a sure thing, with all candidates required to push themselves up until Election Day. Cook appears to be the closest electorate, with local MP David Kempton keen to continue his tenure. Mr Kempton was victorious by 1358 votes in 2012 (after preferences), which may give enough electoral wriggle room for Billy Gordon (ALP) or Lee Marriott (KAP) to mount a victorious cam-
paign. In Dalrymple, local member Shane Knuth (KAP) won handsomely in 2012, but will face new rivals in the upcoming campaign. Barron River MP Michael Trout was victorious by 4912 (after preferences) votes at the last election, but ALP rival Craig Crawford is well and truly within the constraints of victory. If the election is close, the Far North could play a major part in deciding the new tenure of government. Both major parties will be confident of victory, for vastly different reasons.

Tablelands Relay for Life date confirmed THE 2015 Tablelands ‘Relay for Life’ event has been confirmed for November 7 and 8 at the Atherton Showgrounds. Teams will toil over 18 hours, where they are required to keep a baton moving continuously, through either running or a relay style walk. A cause designed to assist those diagnosed with cancer, it is expected over 300 people will participate. Cancer Council Queensland Relay For Life Coordinator Courtney Sullivan said she was keen for residents all over the Tablelands to unite and help those who need it. “Each year the community bands together to fight back against cancer and we are calling on locals to come together again in 2015, to show their support and strength for Queenslanders impacted by the disease,” Ms Sullivan said. “Community action truly makes a difference – 2014 Queensland Relay For Life events raised more than $4.2 million for vital cancer research, prevention programs and patient support services.”

PROMISING local singer Jade Holland is becoming a household name, as she continues her impressive country music career. After visiting the Mareeba RSL at the age of 11 and witnessing a performance, it was all Ms Holland needed to begin a passion for music, of which she has never lost. “I used to get home after school and listen to music between four and six hours a day on Youtube,” she said. “My favourite artist during this time (and still is) was Kasey Chambers and I also enjoyed the style of the Dixie Chicks.” Not many people may realise the importance of vocal exercise that TV broadcasters, musicians and radio presenters undertake prior to beginning their performance. Ms Holland highlighted a radio interview that she had completed earlier in the morning, as a prime example of her dedication. “I actually have been up since 5-5.30am this morning,” she said. “I knew that I had a radio interview at 7am; and I always like to warm up two hours prior to singing, so I don’t injure my vocal cords.” After spending time in both Biboohra and Mareeba during primary school, Ms Holland relocated to Kuranda High for
her secondary schooling. The sheer workload performing in festivals during her secondary schooling is nothing short of staggering, with Jade performing in 36 during year 11 and 40 in her final year of high school. Support of her family isn’t lost on Ms Holland, who said her parents and support team have made her dreams come true. “I’ve got to truly experience different parts of Australia,” she said. “We’ve never been ones for staying in luxury hotels; we’d rather camp together and spend time with genuine people.” Jade’s second single ‘Woh oh’, was written by Anthony Snape, who passed on his song to her, the moment he heard her voice. “The song is very inspirational, as it centres around a new flame in someone’s life,” she said. “My voice starts off low and builds up, which adds a dramatic touch to the song.” In her limited spare time, Ms Holland likes to spend as much time with her family and partner as possible. Ahead of the upcoming Hope Estate Campfire Festival’s People’s Choice Competition, Jade is calling on country music lovers to vote her into the top 10, which would see her play alongside the likes of Kasey Chambers, Lee Kernaghan and John Butler Trio. http://www.campfirefestival.com.au/ vote/

Hospital advances inspired by staff FORMER MSC Mayor Mick Borzi believes Mareeba Hospital’s new facilities have made it one of the ‘shining lights’ of the Cairns/Tablelands region. Mr Borzi, who oversaw several meetings on improving the hospital between 1996 and 2004, said the success was richly deserved for the staff, who presided over an integral service in the community. Currently attending to over 3000 patients a month, Mareeba Hospital has become the largest patient hospital in the FNQ region (outside of Cairns). The hospital now offers maternity services,
full theatre cover, along with a fully staffed emergency department on a 24/7 basis. Mr Borzi said the work of several key stakeholders over the past two decades had laid the frame for the Tablelands to receive quality health care. “Full credit is down to Dr Patrick O’Neill (former Medical Superintendant) and Dr Janet Webster, who returned early from maternity leave, as there was a GP shortage in 2005,” he said. “Special mention should also go to the community GP’s who supported the hospital at the time; current Medical Superintendant Dr Tjaart Grobbelaar, Dr Lyn Wardlaw (Director
of Nursing) and all hospital staff.” Former Director of Nursing Dr Lyn Wardlaw said the local community has always had a strong regard for the hospital. “The new changes have seen more doctors available, more services open longer and greater treatment for those battling chronic diseases,” she said. Dr Wardlaw, who is currently the Exectutive of Nursing/Midwifery for the Torres Strait/ Cape, said local GP’s regularly went beyond the call of duty. “Dr Patrick O’Neill was also instrumental in helping the whole process,” she said.
Redundancies as Skytrans grounded AFTER 25 years of servicing Far North Queensland, Skytrans carried its final fleet of passengers on Friday, January 2. Further sadness was felt in the community, with all of the 188 strong workforce made redundant over the festive season. Skytrans was required to pay $4 million in a bid to effectively cover all redundancy packages. In a statement to shareholders, employees and the general public, Managing Director Simon Wild sighted several issues for the airline’s demise. A lost government contract and a falling US dollar were major reasons; however Mr Wild stressed that Skytrans would have found a looming price war difficult to compete in. “In addition to the currency challenge, it now appears likely that we will have competition on our Cape
routes, with an inevitable price war,” he said. “ A war where the only winner would be the airline with the deepest pockets. “It would be a war I would not be prepared to enter, as it would have jeopardised staff entitlements.” Mr Wild conceded that despite a healthy bank balance, he believed an uncertain future meant the airline was forced to cease trading immediately. “Skytrans has survived longer than most other regional airlines in Australia,” he said. “In the past 10 years alone, it has pumped more than $127 million in wages into the paypackets of mainly North Queenslanders. “It has paid over $6 million in payroll tax to the Queensland Government; it has supported spin-off jobs and support worth many mil-

Tablelands focus on health, with free clinics coming up
The Melanoma march will raise much needed funds in the fight against cancer.
By Justin Fris
HEALTH is single handily one of the most important issues that any of us face during our lifetime. Now more so than ever, we need to remain updated with concerns or information which can assist. Women on the Tablelands are being encouraged to take advantage of the next round of free health clinics. Recipients of a medicare card will be able to access a wide range of services, ranging from sexual health checks and pap smears; which will accessible in several locations across the Tablelands. Every consultation will be undertaken by qualified female nurses, so every patient will receive the upmost care during their session.
Locations during round two include: Atherton Primary Health Care Centre (February 5 and 26), Atherton- Midin (February 17), Malanda (February 18), Mareeba Hospital (February 5 and 26) and Mareeba’s Mulungu facility (February 16). With the wet season, comes the added annoyance of mosquitoes. As dengue fever can often arise during this time of year, it is important people reduce their risk of contracting it. There have been four additional recorded cases since January 5, with the season total now standing at six. Cairns will also host the 2015 Melanoma March (March 22) in a bid to raise money against the largest killing cancer in Australia. Locals are encouraged to attend

Report traffic accidents on your mobile phone From January 1, 2015, motorists who are involved in a minor crash will have the opportunity to report the incident via the Policelink smart phone app or online, instead of waiting for police to attend. Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said the new reporting via PoliceLink, would allow motorists to continue their journey without waiting for police. “In 2010, a Queensland Police Service report estimated about 73,000 officer hours were dedicated each year, to responding to non-injury crashes,” Acting Assistant Commissioner Keating said. “By making amendments to our policy we will be

After the information has been collected, motorists will be issued a report number that can be used for insurance purposes. Despite the new advance, the application has come under fire from the RACQ, who believe there will never be an effective substitute for having police presence on the ground. Members of the community have always voiced concern about the elderly, as they may not all have accessibility to a smartphone device, which could compromise some situations.

Vow to work closer with local farmers By Justin Fris AHEAD of the looming election, the Newman Government has outlined a desire to work closer with Tablelands farmers. LNP officials are confident that the installation of the Agricultural Energy Council will ensure all needs are being met. Newman Government ministers John McVeigh (Agriculture) and Mark McCardle (Energy) have joined forces in a bid to bring down the overall cost of electricity in the bush. “A Memorandum of Understanding between the government, Queensland Farmers’ Federation and AgForce will give the Agricultural Energy Council direct input into electricity policy while overseeing reforms aimed directly at benefiting farmers,” Mr McVeigh said. “Reducing production costs is vital to achieving the LNP Government’s goal of doubling agricultural production by 2040.” Representatives on the council will include representatives from the following entities: Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry; the Department of Energy and Water Supply; AgForce; the Queensland Farmers’ Federation and other key industry groups; It will report to the Agriculture Cabinet Committee. leader Bob Katter returned aim at the Newman Government, believing that prices would only increase if the LNP is returned to power on January 31. “Churchill had it dead right when he described a discussion paper as “an indefinite postponement of any decision… or a decisive decision for indefinite postponement,” he said. “On the eve of an election, we can most certainly describe the announcement of the Agricultural Energy Council (AEC) in this way. “This is nothing more than a blatant lie by the LNP Government. “We were given a clear cut promise before the election that there would be no increase in irrigation charges. “These have been clothed in the savage increases in electricity prices through free market charges. “If the LNP wins the next election in their own right, if we fail to get the balance of power, then the corporatisation of assets will continue to drive prices through the roof. “And remember, the ALP are also no bloody innocents in the garden when it comes to asset sales. “This announcement by the LNP of yet another committee is a futile waste of taxpayers’ money and an insult to their intelligence. “If the Government thinks the people are so dumb to be conned by yet another committee, they’re going to be surprised come election time.”

MSC Christmas Appeal raises hope
150 years of history will be celebrated in Mareeba on February 16.
By Justin Fris
MAREEBA Shire Council’s ‘Christmas Appeal’ raised over $4,000 in a bid to help families in need enjoy their festive season. MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was extremely thankful for the generosity of people within the shire jurisdiction, who united in a bid to help their community. “At Christmas time, it is important to take a step back and realise that individually, not everyone has it easy,” he said. “Christmas is especially important for children; a time where they deserve joy and to not go without.” With council not due back until Wednesday January 21, Mayor Gilmore said it was an ideal opportunity to reflect on the year ahead and commended the attitude of all council staff. “I believe our (MSC) council is maturing very well,” he said. “Everyone across the board has got a grim determination to make things work within our council.” Mayor Gilmore said he would be looking to consolidate current activities in 2015 and believed a conservative planning approach would pave the way for greater achievement. “At the end of the day, it is always better to be conservative and carefully plan things, rather than being haphazard and hurried,” he said. The Express will recommence its coverage of MSC meetings from January 21.
Train glory rekindled By Justin Fris
MEMORIES of history’s past will be shared on February 16 in Mareeba, with a pristine steam train returning to celebrate 150 years of rail in Queensland. This remarkable achievement will be commemorated by the train leaving Brisbane tomorrow (15 January) and slowly winding its way up the state. Once in the Far North from February 13, the train will travel from Cairns to Kuranda, ahead of the visit to Mareeba. Locals will be able to board the train and
stir the nostalgic feeling generated by the magnificent locomotive. Mareeba Shire Council Mayor Tom Gilmore said he was pleased that Mareeba could share a special part of Qld rail’s anniversary. “The train will arrive in Mareeba on Monday, February 16, providing locals the chance to hop on board and celebrate the contribution rail has made to connect regions through the state since 1865,” Mayor Gilmore said. “This special steam train service will be a chance for people to step back in time and experience the roots on which Queensland’s rail industry was built.”
For those keen to travel on the train, there are several fare options for all ages. If you wish to travel between Kuranda and Mareeba, fares start at $10 for Adults and $5 for Children/Pensioners. It will arrive into Mareeba around 1.50pm, amid band festivities and a civic reception. Patrons will then be able to travel to Kuranda at 3.20pm, with an arrival time of 4.05pm. After a brief spell in Kuranda, the train will then depart at 4.40pm and will be back in Mareeba around 5.25pm. If you would like to book, please contact Queensland Travel on 1800 753 150.

AUSTRALIAN Labor Party candidate for Cook Billy Gordon said he wants to bring hope to the Cook electorate. In a chat with The Express last Friday, Mr Gordon said his key policies were heavily focussed around health and education. “The Cook electorate is sparsely populated in some areas,” he said. “For example, the state of the Thursday Island hospital is a major concern for me. “Access to certain facilities are sometimes limited to plane or boat; which means we can’t afford any more cuts to health.” After being informed of the January 31 poll, Mr Gordon began a series of calls to his supporters and team, along with preparing campaign resources. Mr Gordon ran as the ALP candidate for the federal seat of Leichhardt in 2013. Despite being defeated, he did poll well in several towns located within the Cook electorate. “I had a good time on the Leichardt campaign trail,” he said. “I’m taking nothing for granted during the campaign as there are simply no shortcuts.” Discussion was then shifted to Mr Gordon’s background, where he has a wealth of experience across several industries. “I believe people want a politician who can make critical decisions, but they can still relate to them,” Mr Gordon said.
MEMBER for Cook David Kempton has reaffirmed his electorate that ‘What you see is what you get’ ahead of the January 31 election. After being notified via tele-conference of the snap election date, Mr Kempton’s team (along with all parties and candidates across Qld) began preparing for the arduous three weeks ahead. “The overall feeling was excitement once the date was released,” he said. “By getting back to business we can continue to see the economy repaired and certainty for employees and employers. “It is better that the campaign can be done quickly and if reelected I can continue on delivering a brighter future for Cook.” Victorious with 53.43% of the overall vote (after preferences) in 2012, Mr Kempton said the 2015 election result would be decided on government’s performance over the last three years, with the Cook electorate also judging him on his performance. “I have a strong working relationship with the Cape York Mayors, local State and Federal MP’s and the regional mayors Peter Scott, Tom Gilmore and Julia Leu,” he said. “Despite budget constraints, I feel we have been able to make significant advances in reducing crime rates and providing improved health, sport and education facilities.”

COOK candidate Lee Marriott would love nothing better than to represent the Far North in state parliament. Mr Marriott, 27, is saddling up for his first election campaign, but the former diesel fitter is keen to further his consultation with members of the community. After being informed of the Jan 31 poll, the Katter’s Australia Party candidate has began canvassing the vast plains of the electorate, speaking with people and stakeholders alike. Basing himself in Mareeba over the next few weeks, he will be a fixture in the town, along with Port Douglas and the Mossman regions on Election Day. Mr Marriott said the core component of his campaign was his imperative desire to consult with all members of the electorate and listen to what they want. “I am approachable on any issue and am always prepared to consult with the people,” he said. “I want people within the electorate to know I am one of them.” In a final pitch for voters, Mr Marriott (who originally hails from Lakelands) said: “Victory would mean I could help my people and make their voice be heard in Brisbane,” he said.

Copies of the publication are available around Mareeba and from the chamber office. The Chamber is committed to promoting the interests of the members, establishment and development of trade, commerce and industry for all forms of economic and business activity to achieve sustainable, economic prosperity for Mareeba and surrounding district. GOAT WARFARE
Goats once played an important part in Mareeba’s history. They were unrivalled in providing cheap milk, meat, transport, fun and friction. Everyone’s goats ran wild and terrorised the town. Government officials were harassed with official letters; Police demanded a fence - goats were eating uniforms off clothes lines; another fence demanded for the school - goats eating kids lunches; Magistrate harassed - goats invading the Court while in session; sawmill workers demanded payment for the extra half an hour of work they did every morning getting rid of goats before work could begin.
Put Your Business Online with CATsites
In approximately 1949 the Council rounded up all the goats into temporary pens around the water towers and each night someone let them out again. However, they finally got them loaded onto trucks and transported out of town. The Museum now has three goats harnessed to carts, one running a-muck, one playing ‘King of the Castle’ on the roof of the Blacksmith Shop and one still to come eating the children’s lunches in the School Room. With the school holidays now here, bring your family to the Heritage Museum. Free entry and something of interest for everyone.

THE new 2015 school year is just about to start, so now is the time to make sure you and the kids are ready. With more than 100 years of combined experience in office products, stationary and printing, what the team at O’Donnells Office Power doesn’t know about back-to-school products and students requirements, just isn’t worth knowing. The experienced staff, headed by Sandra, are here to help with all your back-to-school needs for the coming school year. There are lots of no name, cheap generic brands flooding the market from some of the larger national retailers. Markers with greatly reduced ink capacity, display books with inferior plastic sleeves that can progressively lift the text of a page etc, etc, etc. At O’Donnells Office Power we only stock and supply proven branded products, generally specified by the schools, which we know from experience will last the distance and do the job required. Competitive prices, large range, brand name products, experienced staff, local knowledge, a chance to win a student desk worth $395.00 and a rebate back to your schools P&C – Seven great reasons to get your 2015 back-to-school needs from O’Donnells Office Power. Drop in, fax or email your list to us, or help yourself to our large range and experienced advice. Open Monday to Friday and also open Saturday mornings. O’Donnells Office Power. 224 Byrnes

SHADES OF GREEN You won't know how absolutely delightful this property is until you visit it personally. Great opportunity here for an extended family to purchase together as there is a large house and a granny flat joined together. Spacious open plan leading on to the great outdoors. Master bedroom with an en-suite and a walk in robe. Build-ins in most of the other rooms and there also is an office. The acreage at the front was once used for growing turf so it is the best shade of green. The back yard leads you to the Barron River and there are steps to go down to it or you can drive down a road to where the pump is in case it has to be moved. Couple of green houses accommodate a large amount of plants, some will relocate with the sellers but some could be left behind for you to keep. The shed that was a stable once is now a garage, a workshop and a storage. If you are looking to accommodate some stock or just have a great lifestyle then this might be the place for you. Bandits win in rain reduced result By Justin Fris
2015 began in fine style for the Mareeba Bandits, who defeated Mission Beach in a rain affected 30 over match at Kerribee Park last Sunday. The visitors were 2/67 after 16.5 overs, when driving rain called a halt to proceedings. As Mareeba’s run- rate was superior, the hosts were awarded victory once the match was officially called off at 4.52pm. It was a satisfying result for Bandits Club President Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams, who created history by playing in the same team as his two sons, Zac and Chris, for the first time. Thick cloud cover greeted both sides earlier in the day, with the visitors sending the Bandits in to bat. Adams Snr made a breathless start to the innings, before Brendan Payne came in at number three and treated the bowling attack with utter contempt. Payne had two sixes by the 8th over and the hosts were rocketing along at seven runs per over. His fun came to an end two overs later however, after he was caught in the deep. Mission Beach clamped down on the hosts’ freewheeling attitude midway through the innings, only allowing 10 runs between the 14th and 17th over. Both sides wrestled for ascendancy after this economical spell, before a young tailender batsman stood up to be counted. 14- year old Lachlan Ford brought a previously unseen level of enthusiasm to the crease, assisting his senior colleague Brett Brewer with aplomb.
At 5/135 in the 25th over and needing a boost, Brewer and Ford torched the visitors with a blistering 41 off five overs, before Ford’s resistance was broken by Craig Sichter. Finishing on 7/181 after their allocated innings, the task was simple. The visitors would need to chase down 182 runs off 180 balls, for a precious away victory. The visitors began slowly, as the disciplined Bandits duo of Robert Taylor and Brett Brewer refused to give an inch. Menacing clouds lurked around every corner of Kerribee Park, while the visitors toiled manfully in their quest for victory. At 0/10 after five overs and treading water in the run-rate department, Mission Beach opener Anthony Palmer had clearly seen enough. Palmer opened up his shot selection, with even quality bowling being dispatched to the boundary rope. Sensing the game may have been slipping out of reach, the visitors hit their straps in the 10th over, and began to slowly peg the sizeable run differentiation back. Palmer continued to frustrate the home side, being dropped three times in the outfield. He ended the day on 45 not out and Robert ‘Bomber’ Adams with sons Chris and Zac played together on Sunday. Sayers primed for Supercar series debut By Justin Fris
Sayers is one of FNQ’s shining lights in motorsports.
PAGE 22 The Express, Wednesday, January 14, 2015
TALANTED motorsport driver Callan Sayers is primed for his first season in the V8 touring car series, after dominating at both state and national titles. A journey which began at the Mareeba MakoTrac at the age of nine, Sayers will now be part of the entire V8 Supercars community, racing on Australia’s best tracks each week. Sayers will be at the MakoTrac today (January 14), between 10am and 3pm. Locals are encouraged to stop by and have a look at his car; along with enjoying a hearty BBQ. Getting behind the wheel behind any major car in competitive motorsports is not as easy as it looks. Temperatures on track and in the car can sometimes be up to 20 degrees hotter than surrounding areas. Sayers said growing up in FNQ has given him a definitive advantage on race day; which adds toward his mental toughness in the car. “I cope with the heat pretty well,” he said. “Mental toughness plays a major role in how a driver can perform behind the wheel. “At QUT I currently study mechanical engineering, with long hours of study being another avenue to improve long periods of concentration.” Along with mental toughness, drivers need to exude a level of self confidence; not necessary arrogance, but an unwavering self-belief that they can achieve results. Maintaining physical fitness and diet are also imperative for Sayers, who en-
sures both are meticulously followed ahead of each event. “I work with my personal trainer up here in Cairns,” he said. “More work is done on the upper body, due to the nature of my sitting position during the race. “The night before a race, I will load up on carbohydrates and eat pasta. On race day, I like to have plenty of fruit and water.” On the day at the track, Sayers will have breakfast with his team (his father and Michael Peake) and watch footage on his personal laptop, while eating. He then chats with Peake about his goals ahead of the relevant session and clean his car ahead of his first practice. This dedication is matched by the work that Sayers does off the track. With possession of a quality race simulator, he will spend up to 12 hours a week perfecting his technique on domestic and international tracks. “In terms of physics, the simulator I work on is probably about 80-90% accurate, which gives me a good feel for certain aspects of each track,” he said. Sayers also spoke with The Express about personal high regard for his team, who also are his pit crew for each race he is involved in. “I have a good relationship with my team and Michael Peake (along with Newell Street Smash Repairs in Gordonvale) have always supported me,” he said. Sayers’ debut will be in Adelaide on March 27 and The Express will keep readers updated throughout the year with his progress. Today’s MakoTrac appearance will be covered next week.

MUFC ‘united’ ahead of 2015
MUFC 2015 Committee: (L-R) Rob Battistin, Michael Cipolla, Eddie Falcomer, Brenda Savaglio, Alex Srhoj, Sherri Soncin, Raymond Cater, Sandro Soncin, Stephen Srhoj, Rosetta Spena, Giulie Alderton, Tamara Srhoj and Mark Simonato. ABSENT: Mario Terranova, Michael Haendel, Alf Moriconi, Ann-Maree Simonato, Snow Heathfield and Nora Stewart. By Justin Fris
CHAMPIONS never rest and the Mareeba United Football Club have already commenced new planning for the 2015 season. Although change is a necessity to remain at the cutting edge, the Bulls have reshuffled their front office with proven talent. Raymond Cater will take over from Alex Srhoj as Club President, and will oversee a new
committee with several new additions. Mr. Cater, a man who is engrained within the local community, has fostered good ties with local and football personnel over several years. Despite ending his tenure as President, Srhoj will not be lost to Mareeba football community, after accepting a Coaching/Development position encompassing the entire club. Sherri Soncin will be MUFC’s new secretary, after duly accepting her nomination. Sponsor-
ship has also been strengthened, with both Rosetta Spena and Tamara Srhoj working in tandem. Giulie Alderton will be the club’s treasurer, with Mario Terranova and Michael Haendel being appointed in Vice President roles (Senior and Junior respectively). Along with the front office, there are other key roles that deserve to be recognised. Ann-Maree Simonato will be the club registrar, Nora Stewart will oversee functions and Eddie Falcomer will
be the head groundsman. The extended committee for 2015 is as follows: Stephen Srhoj, Snow Heathfield, Robert Battistin, Sandro Soncin, Mark Simonato, Brenda Savaglio, Michael Cipolla and Alf Moriconi. Pre-season training is set to commence in late January, ahead of the MAZDA Cup tournament in early March. The Express would like to congratulate all officials on their appointments and wishes them well for the upcoming season.

Greater commitment will be required by rugby league players across the Tablelands in 2015 By Justin Fris
SWEEPING changes by the Cairns District Rugby League (CDRL) will mean all clubs will be required to show faultless commitment in 2015. New rules mean that each club must field three teams across all senior grades each week; if one grade forfeits, the other two grades will also lose points. Allocated bye points will be deducted, in the event of a forfeit and the remaining grades lose. Another major talking point during 2014 was the restructuring of the unlimited interchange, with the league voting to cap the number of rotations per match. Rotations will now be capped at 10 per match, which will mirror the number used by Northern Pride players in the InTrust Super Cup (ISC). Greater scrutiny will also be placed on finals eligibility, in a bid to achieve fairness. In order to be eligible for finals, a player (including Northern Pride players) will be required to play over 11 matches in the regular season to qualify for finals selection.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Players over 40 will have to attain a medical certificate; ensuring they have a medical clearance to play a contact sport. Mareeba Gladiators first grade coach David Grainer said his squad was well and truly aware of the new rule changes and it would provide extra incentive for younger players to step up. “If we are going to be competitive this season, we’ll need as many as possible on the training track,” he said. “The CDRL are trying to the make the competition more advanced like the ISC and by doing this will pick up the speed of the game. “It is up to the younger fellas now to step up if they wanted to further their opportunities in rugby league.” Atherton Roosters official Darryl Day said his club were not fazed by the new changes and were excited by several new signings ahead of their preseason trial schedule.
