30.24 percent rise by 2017/18 By Justin Fris
THE Tablelands Regional Council’s financial projections indicate net rates and utility charges will rise by 30.24% over the next three years. TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long handed down the budget on June 18, with the ‘one-off’ de-amalgamation levy of $100 dominating ratepayer discussions around the water cooler. Delving a little deeper however, there are several figures which make for interesting reading; and have a direct co-relation with increased household charges. TRC officers project the following total net rates and charge increases within the next three years: (12.17 per cent in 2015/16, 7.54 per cent in 2016/17 and 10.91 per cent in 2017/18). Once various discounts and remissions are taken into account,
these amended official net rates and charges figures for ratepayers are: (12.64 per cent in 2015/16, 7.01 per cent in 2016/17 and 10.59 per cent in 2017/18) which results in the 30.24 per cent rise over the next three years. Although there was only a ‘general’ rate rise of six percent this year, increases to waste and water charges and the de-amalgamation levy ensure the total rate rise was actually 12.64 per cent overall. If those percentages are then converted into dollars, it roughly equates to each TRC ratepayer paying over $1000 in increases by 2017/18. Both business stakeholders and ratepayers within the TRC jurisdiction have had an opportunity to run their eyes under the budget and offer their opinions. TRC CEO Ian Church said the quotable projections were ‘conservative’; and provides some context on the decisions as follows:

“The percentage increases quoted, particularly for the general rate, are included in the 10 year forecast and are extremely conservative,” he said. “It is my intention as CEO to drive further efficiency and cost savings through our ‘Sustainability Project’ so that these increases do not have to be levied. “It is expected that there will need to be further increases in utility charges, (water, waste and sewerage) as these are required to be charged on the basis of full cost recovery; and we are not quite there yet. “Council has adopted a ‘Sustainability Strategy’ which will see us continue to review operations with a view to reducing costs as well as finding alternative sources of revenue where possible. ATHERTON State High School has successfully secured over $500,000 in funding through the state- based Collaboration and Innovation Fund (CIF). The announcement – with ASHS only one of 21 schools across the state successful – means the school can suc-
cessfully advance their e-school and virtual campus portfolios. Dubbed: ‘The School of Astronomy and Astrophysics’, the initiative has been spearheaded by Mr David Platz. Upon being notified of the success, Mr Platz said: “This is a vision I have been working towards for over 12 years now.
“Students not only from our region, but nationwide, will benefit from having online access to high-quality Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics (STEM) related subjects that make up part of their school curriculum choices.” ASHS principal Tony Whybird said he was really excited about the news,
which would greatly benefit students at the school. “The funding will see the further development of extension activities for our highest achieving academic students,” he said. “We excitedly look forward to the future and the opportunities that will be provided to students across many year levels.”

Cornett’s IGA in Cooktown is about to undergo a major refit to its premises at Helen Street. As a sign of goodwill, management have decided to offer all the shelving and display cabinets to the local community. Cornett’s have appointed Lewis Collins and the Cooktown Creative Artists Association to sell off the assets, with all the proceeds from the sale being donated to local clubs and charities CCAA is an incorporated not-forprofit organisation, which was formed in 1991, as part of a regional project to promote tourism and support local artists living in Cooktown and surrounds. Mr Collins said: “We need help from anyone in the community who can spare some time to help us; it’s a big task be-
cause there are so many shelves and fittings.” “We are going to have multiple rounds of selling the Shelving units, as there is an extensive range and number of shelving, stands and display units to be sold, this process will continue until all the refit is complete at IGA and all items are sold.” Cornett’s IGA store Manager Paul Scott said it was the company’s way of giving back to the community and hope that all local clubs and charities benefit from it. All the items will be sold and can be viewed online by following this link: http://www.lewiscollins.com.au/?p=14 or you can email an offer with your contact details to lewis@lewiscollins.com. au new items will be up online until each week until all are sold.

TRC ratepayers react FROM PAGE 1
“For example we are: • Optimising our purchasing to ensure reduced expenditure on materials and services • Reducing our plant and fleet holdings and improving management of maintenance expenditure • Implementing robust asset management systems • Evaluating returns on assets • Reviewing capital expenditure and focusing on renewals • Reviewing operational expenditure (ongoing) • Evaluating when borrowing for asset purchases is appropriate • Reviewing core business and service levels in some areas of operations “In the time since de-amalgamation, we have cut in excess of $4.5m from expenditure and saved the bottom line. “This has been achieved by reducing staff costs and reducing expenditure in a number of areas of operations including GIS, Revegetation, water and waste and other operational areas. This has contributed to the 2014/15 turnaround.” Several local ratepayers have had time to digest the budget, with the overwhelming majority unhappy with the projections. Kairi-based grazier Louise Pensini said increasing costs and rates played a major role in how her family budgets certain elements of the business. “We have to budget anything that we grow,” she said. “I’ve never known it to be as tough as it is now. “Sometimes it appears that some on the council don’t realise how much farming means to the Tablelands.” Mrs Pensini also felt the ‘one-off’ de-amalgamation levy of $100 could have been halved; and spread around a little more. She said her family will receive at least 12 rates notices – due to the size of their farming business. Topaz-based ratepayer Ian Bean disagreed with the implementation of the one-off de-amalgamation levy. Additionally, he added that the rate rises would be especially hard on residents with limited incomes, which included pensioners. Malanda-based ratepayer Lyn O’Connor – who is a fixture at every TRC meeting – firmly believes leadership is the answer to the increases. “Here we go again with the de-amalgamation violins,” she said.
“The Mayor said in her public address in August 2012 that Mareeba would have to pay for all of the de-amalgamation costs. “Well, congratulations to Mareeba for de-amalgamation and getting a whole swag of new councillors who work together; MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore is a leader with an attitude of being the first among equals. “(The) TRC is still suffering under the leadership style of Mayor Rosa Lee Long and nothing will improve while she wields the casting vote; always in a 'gang', relying on Stocker and Hodge to support her every whim.” Trevor Sorenson – who is an active member of the TRC region across a multitude of community organisations – also offered his view on the overall rate rise situation. “The rate hikes are very concerning as a ratepayer, given the Southern Tablelands is taking a bigger hit through de-amalgamation,” he said. “But even more concerning, is the fact the TRC are pushing the general rate rise of 6 percent publically; but with the levy and additional add ons, the real figure is 12.64 per cent. “Why aren’t the cards being put on the table in public, in terms of the total (rate rise) ? “The question I pose, and is on the lips of many across the Southern Tablelands is: Why is it, when we had no democratic vote on de-amalgamation, that we are being hit with a levy and forced to suffer the consequences?

“It’s also not good enough for the TRC to lay off staff and services; and still slug ratepayers with additional hikes and the levy. “It is only adding more hurt, as 58 people have been removed from their jobs.” Mr Sorenson added that the TRC should take a greater look at how funds can be used more efficiently; citing two examples of where money has or is being wasted. The first, being the purchase of the Atherton Centrelink building for $1.3 million, which proved to be a less than fruitful purchase upon de-amalgamation. Secondly, the TRC is currently headed to the courts, to contest the de-amalgamation cash-spilt ruling. This process could take up to 18 months to be resolved; and even then, there is no certainty that the Council will be better off. Mr Sorenson solution to the TRC’s plight is for the Palaszczuk Government to install an administrator in a dual-based role. “The administrator should be brought in to address the current financial issues facing the TRC until at least the next election,” he said. “They could also assist with sorting out the mess left by deamalgamation.” The above graph shows a complete breakdown of the TRC’s rates projections within the next three years. Date change for ‘City Slider’ in Kuranda
“People who do consume unpasteurised milk are at increased risk of infection due to pathogens in the milk, that are capable of causing severe illness and potentially death. “For this reason, I would also not recommend people bathe in the milk.”

Kuranda to host ukulele festival
THOSE who were interested in taking a splash on the Kuranda ‘City Slider’ will need to wait a little longer than anticipated. The 350m slide – which was set to entertain the masses this Saturday – has been rescheduled for September 26. ‘City Slider’ co-founder Stuart Harris said organisers had been flooded with calls to shift the date later in the year; accompanying the warmer weather. Mr Harris added: “Thank you to all the people of Kuranda and nearby Cairns and beyond who got in touch. “We have read all the messages and taken them on board to confirm a new, warmer date with the local council. “We’ve been blown away by the huge enthusiasm for the slide’s impending visit and we are really excited to get to Kuranda in September. “Obviously we’re aware the change may inconvenience some sliders and apologise for that in advance; but we’re excited to get there at a warmer time and make it a more enjoyable experience for all.”
Funding boost for regional Qld THE Palaszczuk Government has pledged their commitment to improve mobile network coverage in regional Qld. As a result of this pledge – 68 mobile towers throughout the state (including the Torres Strait) will either be installed or upgraded. Science and Innovation Minister Leeanne Enoch said: “Today’s announcement is a great outcome for Queensland, particularly those living in regional and remote areas,” she said. “Having adequate mobile coverage is critical for people living outside major cities. By helping expand coverage we can see clear benefits for public safety, business, education, tourism, and much more.” Ms Enoch added that the Palaszczuk Government had invested $10 million in the Mobile Black Spot Program.
Unpasteurised milk warning QUEENSLANDERS are being advised not to drink any unpasteurised (raw) milk under any circumstances. Raw milk – which is unfit for human consumption – is currently sold in Australia as cosmetic-type product. Qld Health’s chief health officer Dr Jeannette Young said: ““As bath milk is not for human consumption, it is not a food and therefore not bound by the labelling requirements of the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code,” she said. “All unpasteurised milk products in Australia are required to be labelled with a statement to the effect that the product has not been pasteurised and is not for human consumption.

CLEALL’S
Version A
Version B
By Justin Fris
PROPOSED changes to divisional boundaries within the Tablelands Regional Council were discussed during the June 18 meeting. Unsurprisingly – there was a great divide in opinion amongst councillors – and again, TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long’s casting vote was used to break the deadlock. Two divisional maps (pictured) were offered up for discussion, with the Version B preference (supported by Mayor Lee Long, Cr Geoff Stocker and Cr Peter Hodge) victorious. Version A was supported by Cr Marjorie Pagani, Cr Rod Marti and naturally Cr Shaaron Linwood; who ultimately loses out the most from the new divisional map. The maps were presented as part of continual dialogue with the Qld Change Commissioner and Electoral Commission Qld; as the TRC is keen to add an additional councillor from 2016 onwards. The motion effectively means the TRC will indicate to both parties that they wish for six divisions; and for the preferential map (with TRC preference considered) to be used as part of rolling public consultation. Members of the general public are still able to lobby the ECQ for Version A during the
public consultation process, should they feel strongly in favour of it. Once these factors have been accounted for, the Change Commissioner will make a decision; which is unable to be overturned. ECQ has certain guidelines which need to be adhered to by the TRC, which are based around the number of enrolled voters within the jurisdiction. These guidelines include: An average population distribution of 2,769 per division, with a maximum of 3,046 and minimum of 2,492. Under the Version B preference, divisions four (Cr Marti), five (Cr Hodge) and six (Cr Pagani) will remain the same. Division one sees the eastern side of Wondecla added to it from division three (Cr Stocker), with Kalunga re-distributed to division two (Cr Linwood); and Evelyn will be relocated from division two to division three. During discussions - Cr Peter Hodge said that he supported Version B – as all divisions appeared to be in range, population-wise. Cr Linwood said there was ‘absolutely no way’ she could support Version B; and would be promoting the Version A map amongst her constituents within her division.

Cr Pagani said that she supported Cr Linwood’s opinion; and was concerned that the casting vote could be used to settle such an important issue. “The Change Commissioner should continue to be lobbied to accept the alternatives and to go to public consultation to give the people the chance; not just three or four councillors to determining their boundaries.” Cr Marti said: “I think Version A is the preferred one. The reason I say that; it’s really about the practicalities for whoever becomes the councillor of division two. “If you look at Version B, that division two councillor basically has to go right up to the edge of Wondecla and Herberton.” Cr Stocker said the most important thing was that the lobbying element of the exercise was still up for debate. “I think the Change Commissioner is trying to simplify the situation a little bit,” he said.

In the garden … in July! What a great time of year to be out in the garden! For a start, it’s cool. What a blessing here in the tropics – it’s amazing how much more physical you can get when you don’t overheat within the first five seconds of sinking the spade into the ground. It’s just wonderful to be able to get down, dirty and physical out in the fresh air and sunshine without running the risk of heat exhaustion and sunstroke. Make the most of it. In just a few short weeks it could very well be hot again. Lately the weather has been overcast and drizzly. Depressing and horrible from a person-perspective, but great if you’re a newly planted plant - lower evaporation rate, less water-stress, less transplant shock and greater chance of successful establishment. This is a great time of year to get plants into the ground. Mind you, if you plant now, don’t expect to see much growth above ground during the cooler months. In fact, it may look like nothing’s happening at all and you may wonder why you bothered, but actually there’s a huge advantage in planting now rather than waiting until the wet season. The plant may not put out any shoot growth above ground, but it will be working furiously below ground putting out root growth. And roots are the plant’s foundations and engine room. So, when the weather warms up and the wet season rains start, the plants will literally leap out of the ground. If you want to get maximum growth of your plants in the next wet season, the trick is to plant now. The growth you will get during the wet season will simply astound you. A few hints for successful planting at this time of year…. Firstly, don’t forget the mulch. It may be drizzly and damp at the moment, but we are heading into the dry season. A thick layer of organic mulch will be critical to ensuring the survival of your new plants as the dry kicks in and the weather warms up again. Secondly, don’t forget to water your plants in thoroughly when you plant. Even though it may be cool and overcast, your new plants must have a good soaking at planting. Give each plant the equivalent of at least a bucket-full as soon as you have finished planting. Failing to do this is one of the main reasons that new plants die. Thirdly, give your new plants the best possible start in life by digging the soil really thoroughly so that it’s nice and loose to allow the development of big strong root systems. And don’t accidentally poison them by putting fertiliser in the bottom the hole. Believe me, it is all too easy to kill plants by overdoing the fertiliser, so don’t run the risk. When you think about it, July has a lot going for it in the garden.
So … happy gardening this month, and see you at Yuruga!

Melbourne Cup trophy to visit Tablelands Horse racing enthusiasts on the Tablelands will have an opportunity to view the Melbourne Cup trophy in coming months.
THREE towns across the Tablelands have been included in the upcoming ‘Emirates Melbourne Cup’ tour. Atherton, Tolga (both August 9) and Ravenshoe (August 11) have all been included in the tour, which will visit 33 different cities prior to the first Tuesday in November. Ravenshoe R.A.I.S.E. (Rural Activities Incorporating Sustainable Energy) president Doreen Mortimore said the actual cup’s visit to the town would bring a lot of excitement.
"Every year the community shows great interest in the Melbourne Cup and hosting it in our town solidifies the reality of this magnificent Australian iconic event," said Doreen Mortimore, President of Ravenshoe R.A.I.S.E. Inc.. "We can't wait to bring the excitement and engagement of the Emirates Melbourne Cup to our town." VRC Chairman Michael Burn said the tour brings communities together in celebration of
the coveted trophy and the rich 154-year history of the Melbourne Cup. “The tour began in 2003 out of a desire to share the history and magic of the Melbourne Cup with communities around Australia as well as share some of the personal stories behind our great race,” Mr Burn said. “We’re thrilled to take that experience to many new locations and introduce the Cup to people who may never have the chance to visit Flemington.”

MAREEBA’S FIRST FIRE CART
We have this cart in our Museum and it is believed to be the first vehicle owned by the Mareeba Volunteer Fire Brigade. The service was established in 1923 and was housed in a shed opposite the Mareeba Police Station. In the event of a fire, someone rang the Police Station and the policeman ran across the road and rang the bell at the front of the shed. The volunteers came running to pull the cart, complete with the water tank, to the fire site. In the beginning there was no horse to pull the cart, so the men pulled it themselves!
Greater support for the Tablelands THE Gulf Savannah Development group has reaffirmed its desire to work closely with the Tablelands Regional Council. Newly appointed GSD CEO Lara Wilde briefed TRC councillors recently about several new initiatives which could benefit the region as a whole. The first imitative involved the successful acquisition of funding through the Australian Small Business Advisory Services Fund. Under the funding, GSD will receive $350,000 over three years – which will be used to help facilitate a dedicated role for assisting small businesses across the entire Gulf region, including the Tablelands. “The advisor will do a complete tour of the region once a quarter; and will hold free workshops for small business owners,” Ms Wilde said. Councillor Shaaron Linwood subsequently asked Ms Wilde when the advisor would be primarily based - along with what particular route the
tour would go. Ms Wilde replied: “(In terms of the Tablelands) the tour will visit Mt Garnet, Ravenshoe, Atherton and eventually work its way up to Mareeba. “The tour loop will end with a swing out to Chillagoe and Dimbulah. Ideally, we will be looking for an east-west tour loop.” Ms Wilde also announced that GSD has been successful in securing funding from the Department of State Development, which has been earmarked for a designated economic development project. Tableland Futures Chairman Michael Lawrence said the TFC has formed a solid working relationship with GSD. “We welcome this news and are really keen to support them,” he said. “(TFC) we also have some office space in Atherton which they can use when they pass through; should they need it.”

Mareeba RSL, Saturday June 27
There is a story of a Greek Café owner who had a strong accent. He rang the Police Station one day to get some help because two blokes were fighting in his café. “Fight, fight” he shouted into the phone, but the policeman thought he was shouting “Fire, fire”. The policeman followed protocol, ran across the road and rang the fire bell. In due course, the men and fire cart came racing down the road looking for the fire. The exercise was quite effective as the two combatants stopped fighting to see where the fire was!

Third year UQ veterinary students Sanjana Maruvada, Eloise Rimon and Najin Kim, with Dr Wilson.
Veterinary students widen scope FOR the first time, the University of Queensland has included a component of biosecurity planning within its veterinary course curriculum. In an increasing area of agricultural spotlight, biosecurity-based principles (from a variety of angles) are being offered via practical and theory-based concepts. UQ School of Veterinary Science course coordinator Dr David McNeill said a new partnership with the Livestock Biosecurity Network would be of great benefit; especially to his third year students. “Biosecurity planning helps students realise the importance of taking the entire farming system into account when trying to manage disease and animal product safety risks,” he said. “They must consider the system from
the ground up and right along the food and fibre supply chain to the consumer that could be anywhere in the world.” Northern Australia LBN regional officer Dr Sarah-Jane Wilson assists with the facilitation of the material and added: “For many small and hobby farmers, the local vet may be the only person with biosecurity knowledge they ever come into contact with. “For instance, many lifestyle farmers are not aware they need to register for a property identification code, even if they have just one head of livestock. “We are assisting the students in understanding the mandatory elements of keeping livestock and exposing them to theoretical case studies that include real world biosecurity issues, to help prepare them for almost every eventuality.”

Live export plays a significant role in Australia’s economy. A live export forum will be held on July 22 at the Mercure Hotel in Townsville, which is open to all sectors of the livestock industry. The forum – which is designed to provide education and information regarding all aspects of the live export trade – has been in the pipeline for several months. Townsville was selected as the location for the forum, due to the role it plays in providing quality export produce to major Asian markets. Live export plays a massive role in driving Australia’s rural economy. It also provides over 10,000 agricultural jobs across the country. Some of the themes that will be included within

Land Clearing on Cape York
Reponse to clearing article
Just days before the January election, Campbell Newman’s LNP Government approved the clearing of nearly 32,000 hectares of land on Olive Vale station in Cape York, in a decision that was not publicly announced. Conservationists agree the land in and around Olive Vale is worthy of World Heritage listing. It is home to 17 listed threatened species and includes important rivers flowing into the Great Barrier Reef. Tim Seelig from The Wilderness Society has said: “Right now, the bulldozers are already clear felling, destroying habitat and vegetation, similar to old-school Queensland land clearing in the Bjelke-Petersen era, its devastating and frightening. “Our belief is that they’re clearing as quickly as they possibly can.” The company that owns Olive Vale wants to move into dry land farming, predominately sorghum, to supplement their grazing operations; however investigations have revealed the application for clearing “failed to meet the required criteria for High Value Agriculture”. As Parliament cannot intervene because approval had already been granted, the Queensland Government has referred the clearing to the Federal Environment Minister, seeking a Federal Court injunction to halt the bulldozers. This is just one more damning assessment of the failed policies and practices of the Newman Government, in respect to the environment of our state, which will take years to reverse. Valerie Weier, Malanda
I respond to W. Bensted’s article – Traditional owners support clearing at Olive Vale. Nothing is more lamentable than to see Indigenous people take part in the destruction of their own country. Paul Ryan and Peter Spies no doubt feel very satisfied and triumphant to have found such willing allies in the carnage they celebrate with such glee. Sadly, all their plans will be as ephemeral as the many creeks that criss-cross the arid interior. Then the next thing they will want is for the taxpayer to build another mega dam for them. None of their projects will prove to be sustainable and will only end in yet more desertification of our country, and yet more salinity and the destruction of our rivers. The Cape will never be the food bowl of Asia and all these promises of employment will never come to pass. Saeed De Ridder, Silver Valley
Solution to ease range pain One class of goods predominates amongst Kuranda Range: road freight traffic; Cairns’ garbage heading to landfill sites near Mareeba. Drive between Smithfield and Mareeba and it is quickly obvious that there are more of the distinctive green garbage trucks, than any other single type of heavy freight. This means the Cairns Regional Council is more heavily-invested in the range crossing debate than it cares to admit. Without a functional range crossing that garbage has nowhere to go. It would pile up and ripen very quickly in the coastal heat and humidity.
All those truck movements are tough on that section of the Kennedy Highway and create hazards for other road users. The trucks have also been accused of dripping liquefied garbage onto the road surface and leaving it slippery. While the Kuranda Rail line can no longer serve the modern general freight sector, it could take the Cairns garbage trucks off the range road. The rail line to the Arriga sugar mill passes within a kilometre of one landfill site and stops two kilometres short of the other. All it would need is a relatively small investment in rail spurs and wagons and all that rubbish could be taken off the heavilycongested Kuranda Range road. Peter Campion, Tolga
Rates, revenue and reality Some clarification is needed on the council rates rise and so called ‘de-amalgamation levy’. This levy has nothing to do with Mareeba Shire’s de-amalgamation and its naming is a mayoral ploy to make us think that Tablelands ratepayers have to pay for separating from Mareeba – we don’t. The levy plus the 6% rates rise are supposed to help decrease the estimated deficit over the next few years between the annual expenses of delivering Council services and the revenue from rates. Strategically thinking, community interests savvy Cnr Rod Marti, with the support of Ms Linwood and Ms Pagani, proposed a budget based on controlled rate rises only (decreasing annually) to balance future revenue with expenditure without resorting to misleadingly named levies.
The rate rise and levy budget and sixth division boundary plan option decided by the Mayor and councillors Stocker and Hodge, who often vote as she directs them, are yet more examples of opposing and defeating whatever options or sound reasoning the Marti, Linwood and Pagani trio present on any issue. Those who now pay smaller rates will be slugged with greater increases than ratepayers paying larger rates because of the levy. Even larger rates increases in future years may be necessary to ensure revenue matches spending on TRC services or more core services will have to be cut back. Should Mr Hodge be elected as mayor next year he may have to endorse such unpopular changes and will no longer have this Mayor advising him what to say and do. Michael Cole-King, Yungaburra

RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS
The school holidays are in full swing and that means it's time for plenty of fun and there is a real fun line up of movies at Mareeba's Rising Sun Cinema this week. New on screen is the colourful and delightful Disney family animation INSIDE OUT, as well as the acclaimed drama ALOHA, set in Hawaii and with a military theme, and with an all star cast that includes Bradley Cooper, Bill Murray, Emma Stone, Alec Baldwin and Rachel Mc Adams. The excellent holiday animation blockbuster MINIONS, continues throughout the holidays
MINIONS
The purpose of the single-cell organisms the Minions, is to serve despicable masters which is what they have through the ages. Now they are without a master and a purpose and are depressed. Until a Minion called Kevin concocts a plan to find a new despicable master. Together with ukulele-playing Stuart and lovable Bob, they set out on their mission. On their travels, they discover that the world's first female supervillain, Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock) is appearing at VillainCon in Orlando, Florida. Review by Louise Keller: Wonderfully absurd, brilliantly inventive and totally adorable, the Minions is literally a laugh a minute. It's a sparkling combo of clever scripting and execution brought to life with a great voice cast and an innate sense of the ridiculous. The Minions speak only Gobbledygook (apart from a few words), so much of the humour is visual. Consequently, it's quite a feat for these banana-loving critters to portray so much personality. Nothing is overdone: the sketches are brief and I love the way music jokes are integrated. Having a purpose is the theme and the film zips along with great energy and pizzazz, pulling in ideas from all directions.
spective to our emotions. It's a whole new way of thinking and Pete Docter (Toy Story, Monsters Inc) has imagined a wonderfully inventive reality in which our internal feelings are controlled by a group of characters inside our heads. It's colourful and fun but there's also bite, the film playing with great conviction as the roller-coaster of life dishes out its ups and downs in a thrilling heart-felt adventure, liberally dosed with humour. Highlights include a visit to Imagination Island, where Riley's imaginary friend Bing Bong (a gigantic cross between pink fairy floss, an elephant, a cat and a dolphin) cries candy tears and there is a brilliant sequence in which the Joy, Sadness and Bing Bong de construct into two-dimensional abstract characters. I love the scenes in which we glimpse the Emotions belonging to other characters, such as Riley's Mom (Diane Lane) and Dad (Kyle MacLachlan). The idea that we all have mini-me clone-versions of our Emotions in our own heads is delightful. This very clever concept is further developed towards the film's end to great effect and hilarity. Unique, fresh and exhilarating, this is Pixar at its best.

When Riley's (Rashida Jones) moves from Minnesota to San Francisco with her Mom (Diane Lane) and Dad (Kyle MacLachlan), the Emotions in her head are working overtime, as they guide her through the ups and downs of her new life. Review by Louise Keller: Just like Toy Story changed the way we look at toys, this delightful animated charmer from Pixar brings a new per-
hard-charging Air Force watchdog assigned to him. Review by Louise Keller: It's the scenes without dialogue that are the most memorable in this warm, likeable film in which issues big and small grapple for attention. Cameron Crowe has the knack of putting heart into his films and while this one may not be in the same class as Jerry Maguire or Almost Famous, it is nonetheless highly enjoyable. Aloha thrives on the relationships and the interactions between its characters, even if the overall plot that forms the foundation of the film (money, myths and space) is somewhat confusing. I got rather lost by some of the elements regarding the space program, the Hawaiian 'mana', the military and the role of the billionaire contractor: this is where the storyline falls down. It does all comes together in the end, but I would have liked to understand the elements better. When the film begins, Brian Gilcrest (Bradley Cooper) is heading for Hawaii to 'supervise a gate blessing' and return to the fold of Bill Murray's Carson Welch, the eccentric billionaire businessman with dreams that soar beyond the sky. The mission involves a satellite launch and while the history between the two men is unclear, this opportunity clearly offers Gilcrest a new chance - in more ways than one. Bill Murray is always fun to watch and Alec Baldwin makes his presence felt as the grumpy General. But the performance gold comes from the three leads. Beyond his charm, Cooper brings a deep complexity, while McAdams is lovely as the girl with unfinished business. Stone has an intoxicating screen presence charming everyone - from the Hawaiian King, Tracey's kids, the General, the difficult Carson Welch, and of course Gilcrest. The heart of the film concerns Gilcrest's relationships - with two women and the sky. The sky has long been his fascination and the return to Hawaii brings him face to face with his ex girlfriend,Tracy Woodside (Rachel McAdams) and military babysitter Allison Ng (Emma Stone). The dynamic between Gilcrest and Tracy is delightful as they revisit the past as they explore why they split up. Watch for the scenes in which Tracy's husband Woody (John Krasinski, brilliant) meets and greets Gilcrest. Not a word is spoken but plenty is said. It's very funny. Another highlight scene comes towards the end and involves Tracy's daughter Grace (Danielle Rose Russell) and Gilcrest. Once again nothing is said but a rush of emotions result. It's a case of less is more and these are Aloha's defining moments.

YOUR CLUB ON THE TABLELANDS!
One of the unsung heroes of the rock and roll era, Gene Pitney crossed paths with a wide array of rock royalty – from Phil Spector, The Rolling Stones to Ricky Nelson and Carole King – while amassing a sizable string of hits. Pitney arrived on the scene in the late Fifties as a gifted songwriter, capable musician and incredible singer. His dramatic tenor voice, given to piercing climaxes, was among the more remarkable voices of the age. Like Del Shannon and Roy Orbison, Gene Pitney was most expressive with songs of suffering. Gene Pitney’s unique sound and amazing harmonies have stood the test of time. Now at last! “The Best of Gene Pitney” is a sensational reproduction of his greatest hits. The unmistakable voice of Pitney will be heard again through the talents of Eddie Daniels – vocally perfect and
musically excellent. Eddie has a vocal ability that most entertainer’s envy and an amazing ability to mimic legendary superstars. It’s no wonder that he is regarded in the industry as Australia’s foremost vocal impressionist. It’s not just his three octave range and inherent vocal ability that makes Eddie special but also his quick sense of humor, his instant likeable personality, endless enthusiasm and tireless professionalism that ensure his audience enjoys every minute he is on stage. He was crowned the “King of Cabaret” and labeled as a “Master Performer” by the Sydney entertainment critics, a well earned accolade from hard critics in a very competitive market. RED HILL
Here is a very unique opportunity for you to take over a great set up. A lot of fencing has been done in the last three years so your horses should be sound and safe. There is a double stable in one of the five paddocks and a bunker in another. The water comes from a bore and there is plenty of it. There also is another bore that can be used. The best thing is that this property comes with the riparian wrights and there is a pipe in place from the river to get the water up to the block so all you need to do is hook up the pump and have it all! Sixties style three bedroom home with two living areas and a lovely front porch. Timber floors, rain water hooked up to the kitchen, two garages attached to the house, ornamental fish pond and a dog fence as well. Only minutes drive to Mareeba and on the way to Cairns making it the perfect location. Located on the top of a hill with the most spectacular views. Owners are moving and keen to sell fast that's why the price is so very attractive. Inspect by appointment today with Elizabeth Bors. Shooters take aim
Kristie Eyers basks in the glory of victory.
Eyers has bright future Dimbulah Sports and Pistol Club held its annual Open competition on the June long weekend, where 15 enthusiastic ISSF, Service and Black Powder shooters from beginner to expert, joined together for a long weekend of competition. The club hosted this annual event and competitors travelled from: Cairns, Cooktown, Mount Molloy and Burdekin; as well as local members from Dimbulah, Malanda, Cairns, Speewah and Tolga, for a fun camping weekend on the range. As well as the variety of matches shot including: Standard Pistol, Centrefire, Sports Pistol, Rapid Fire, 50m Pistol, Air Pistol, 25 Yd Service and 25m Black Powder, time was taken out for a social BBQ and a tasty
campfire hot roast dinner. The event was officially opened by MSC councillor Nipper Brown, who fired a replica artillery cannon. The Dimbulah Sports and Pistol Club has been active in the community for more than 20 years and offers members the opportunity to learn and develop their skills in the sport of pistol shooting. Members are keen to share their experience with new shooters and we welcome any enquiries from interested people to visit the club. If you would like more information, please call President, Tex O’Brien on 40955514 or email e1tex@bigpond.com.
MAREEBA State High School student Kristie Eyers pulls none of her punches; whether it be in a sparring session or in the ring. Eyers – who participates in the Sun State Amateur Boxing League – participated in the ‘Golden Gloves’ tournament last weekend in Cairns. Adopting a ‘seek and destroy’ approach, Eyers said she loves the fitness and discipline of the sport –along with receiving unwavering support from family, her trainer and teammates.
Finding fights for her can be a bit of a challenge, with many opponents located several hours away; or interstate. Consequently, this can eat into family savings; and with cost of living pressures, it sometimes can be a real challenge for Eyers to progress in her sport of choice. If you are a local business who may be looking to sponsor a promising local athlete, please contact Amanda via: al-eyers@hotmail.com

EXPRESS sPORT Bulls down Comets in drab contest By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba United Football Club extended their lead at the top of the FNQ Premier League table to five points, after a 1-0 victory over the Southside Comets on Saturday night at Borzi Park. Points ‘all weigh the same’ in victory, but the overall standard at times during the match was severely lacking. The Bulls – who narrowly defeated the Comets in their midweek Sportscene Cup tie – were held to account from the off. Keen to win possession and control the middle of the park, the visitors were led superbly early on by Andrei Rachita. Rachita pulled the strings superbly, regularly setting passes free along the flanks; but far too often, the forwards looked clumsy up front. After allowing the Comets to maintain possession for lengthy periods, the hosts scored against the run of play in the 8th minute through Wayne Srhoj. A carefully weighted cross was floated in to the 18-yard box at the clubhouse end, with the visitors somewhat flatfooted by the sudden break. Once landing at Srhoj’s feet, it was rifled clinically into the roof of the net, with Comets keeper Joshua
Wilson powerless to stop it. The visitors’ first real chance of the evening came on 22 minutes, when Bulls keeper Julian Madrid parried a volley hit from close-range. Other speculative half-chances followed in coming minutes, but Madrid would not be seriously called on until the 78th minute. Srhoj provided the main focal attacking threat for the home side, through his set pieces and poaching ability within the box. But, like us, seasoned professionals are human, and Srhoj missed a relatively simple chance to double his tally. Presented with the ball and goal at his mercy from eight yards out in the 28th minute, Srhoj skyed his shot horribly. Wilson then saved smartly a minute later on from point blank range, which set a tone of frustration from the home side thereafter. Chances dried up from both sides for the remainder of the half, with both sides content to poke the ball around the middle of the park under minimal pressure. Even the zest from the crowd – which were staying on the NPL fixture between the FNQ Heat and Brisbane City – was missing. Some home supporters described the second half as one of the worst seen in recent years, as both teams
showed an overall lack of urgency and appetite for goal. With the Comets, this was especially confusing, as they were only trailing by a goal; and if good enough, could have nicked a point. MUFC coach Alex Srhoj did his best to try and freshen things up late in the match, bringing on Anthony Mete and Nicholas Tallarico. The only real chance of note from either side in the half came on 78 minutes, when a rare break down the middle from the Comets briefly stunned a flatfooted Bulls defence. Madrid was delicately chipped from 25 yards, but was able to breathe a sigh of relief as it cleared the bar and nestled on top of the goal. Coach Srhoj was far from impressed with his side’s second half, but was satisfied with the banking of another three points. “We’ve got to stop allowing teams into games,” he said. “We scored one early - we had three or four really good opportunities – (we) should have killed them. “And then we took our foot off the peddle and (the) second half was not good enough. Not good enough, plain and simple. “It’s probably the second or third time we’ve played well enough just to win.” The Bulls will travel to Stratford on Saturday night.

Myrteza to represent Queensland North at nationals
Baving just played in a winning local grand final, Sarrah now heads to the nationals. By Justin Fris
TALANTED local basketball player Sarrah Myrteza will be heading to Tasmania this week, where she will represent Queensland North at the U/16 Australian Junior Championships. The tournament – which will be held between July 4 and 11 – will be a true melting pot of talent from across Australia and New Zealand. Myrteza studies at Mareeba State High School and has a gruelling weekly schedule to fulfil her talent. She plays club basketball in both Cairns and Mareeba and often travels
great distances (as far as Townsville and Mackay) for state training. A seasoned campaigner, Myrteza has a great appetite for basketball and doesn’t cut corners in pursuit of improving her game. Myrteza’s Cairns-based coach Peter Therstons said she is an ‘extremely determined’ athlete; who understood the nature of her big commitment. “Sarrah regularly will attend training here in Cairns at 6.15am in the morning,” he said. “After she finishes, she goes back to Mareeba and does a full day at school.”
Spirited away display from Gladiators By Justin Fris
BROTHERS Cairns eventually accounted for the Mareeba Gladiators 38-24 in Sunday afternoon’s CDRL fixture at Stan Williams Park. It was a much improved display from the younger brigade of Gladiators, who tested the experience and will of the home side. The win is very significant for Brothers, as it means they maintain their quest for a top two berth in the CDRL finals. All is not lost for the Gladiators, who have put together consecutive quality performances against sides seemingly des-
tined to play finals. In a monumental upset in reserve grade, Tonga Kose’s Gladiators knocked Brothers off top spot, with a thumping 4410 win. Abby Hobbler’s U/18’s had a difficult day at the office, going down 66-10; while the Malanda/Mareeba Eels chalked up a 50-8 win in second division. In other matches, Tully held off Kangaroos 18-14 in a surprisingly close result in top versus bottom, Innisfail accounted for Yarrabah 36-26 in a tight and tense affair; while Ivanhoes bounced back from last week’s loss, by crushing Mossman/ Port Douglas 40-14.
Banjo breaks 40 year old school record By Justin Fris
TREZMAN Banjo may only have started his first year at Mareeba State School, but has already written his name in school history. As one of many standout performers across MSHS’s two day athletics carnival, Banjo ran the U/13’s 200m in a scintillating 25.46 seconds – breaking F.Fregona’s 1974 record of 26.50 seconds. Zane Singleton also had a memorable carnival, especially in the triple jump. He finished with an imposing mark of 11.89m, which surpassed L.Agostino’s 11.67m mark in 1990. Singleton was impossible to miss
Come & R
after the carnival – sporting an excellent hat and a satisfied smile to go with it. He also had the distinction of being awarded ‘fastest boy at MSHS’ after winning the novelty-based race after the relay component of day two. Claudette East – who is also a promising rugby league player on the Tablelands – took home the ‘fastest girl at MSHS’ race. With the luxury of having several quality athletes at their disposal during 2015, it was no surprise when the McKinlay Dragons were awarded ‘Overall House Champion’ of the carnival. Some things never change in grand finals By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Basketball League held their winter league grand finals last Thursday evening at the Mareeba PCYC Shire Hall. Regardless of level or ability, some things never change in grand finals; and yet again, we witnessed this theory in all its glory. Teams need to settle early and realise the fact that the match is like any other. It is essential they take opportunities presented to them. Momentum also plays an imperative role in the quest of victory. Should your team be unable to master this intangible, it makes the challenge almost insurmountable. The evening began in earnest, with the Killers claiming the Bgrade title, with a comfortable 45-27 win over the Tequila Slammers. One of the most eagerly anticipated matchups of the night followed, with the female A-grade Baiada Steggles facing off against the Gummaz, who were desperate to break through for a maiden grand final win. All indicators pointed toward a tough, physical contest from the off – the Steggles especially, gave away a significant height difference, which impacted their game close to the bucket. Despite this trend - the Gummaz did themselves no favours
– committing five team fouls in the first seven minutes. A d d i t i o n a l l y, they went 1/8 from the field and 0/5 from three-point land. The Steggles took fewer shots, but made them count. Enterprising Steggles youngster Sarrah Myrteza completed her final tune up before the upcoming national championships, although she often had to battle her way through a crowded key. The Gummaz would fire their only basket of the second quarter with 4.30 left on the clock. They would not register another basket (in between, going 0/11 from the field and 0/10 from downtown) until 6.31 left in the final quarter. By this time, Cyrena Myrteza’s speed was causing all sorts of hassles and the Steggles’ premiership was all but assured. In the male A-grade final, the formidable Stingrays were fancied to win another premiership, but expected to be challenged by a rising MBA Deadleys team. Much like their previous contest only a few weeks ago - the ‘Rays had an extra tin of polish in the clutch - on the road to their 44-

40 premiership victory. Both the ‘Rays and the Deadleys have their own unique ways of playing to their strengths; and this match was no different. The ‘Rays are an extremely slick passing unit, who also know how to defend when it is their turn. Deadleys players can score fast on the break and are quite handy at three-point shooting. After honours were mostly even in the opening exchanges, the Deadleys appeared a little overawed; but the Stingrays didn’t completely put them away. Brendan Ebner and David Hawke took charge of the ‘Rays huddle at quarter time and implored for a sense of calm and structure on offence.
Trailing 35-23 at three quarter time, the Deadleys finally began their tilt at the title, trimming the margin to within three points with seven minutes left. The Deadleys regularly instigated their signature play, which involved a heavy up-court pass to Ash Cater, who would wait under the bucket to pounce. Three points would be the closest the Deadleys would get to the ‘Rays during the game, as experience would ultimately prove to be youth’s master once again. All teams and players mingled during the formal presentations and are excited about the upcoming season, which will kick off on July 21.
Brave Roosters comeback falls agonisingly short By Justin Fris
THE Edmonton Storm further enhanced their finals aspirations, with a 26-12 victory over the Atherton Roosters last Sunday afternoon. The scoreline failed to display the true nature of the contest – with the Roosters overcoming an early 12-0 deficit.
With the scores locked at 12-all on 70 minutes - the Roosters had Renetti Davis sent to the sin bin – with the home side taking advantage. Roosters senior official Darryl Day said the Roosters were missing several key players for the game and eventually ran out of legs in the final ten minutes.
