Local crowned Cairns Show Girl Former Atherton Maize Festival Queen Taleesha Fegatilli has been crowned ‘Cairns Miss Show Girl’ for 2015. The title came as a surprise to the 22 year old, who will represent Cairns in the regional titles; and if successful the state titles in August this year. “We had to attend various functions and a rather daunting interview or judging process; but i quite enjoyed the whole experience, it was held at the De Jarlais pavilion at the Cairns Showgrounds,” she said. Taleesha will give away sashes and prizes to winners at the 2015 Cairns Show.
Mayor of Mareeba Shire Council Tom Gilmore brought down the 2015/16 budget at a special Council meeting held last Wednesday, June 3. The following is from the Mayor’s budget speech: "This budget builds on the foundations which were set firmly in place by our previous budget of 2014-15 which has established the relatively sound fiscal position that this Council has now achieved,” is how Mayor Tom Gilmore has described Mareeba Shire Council's Budget for 2015-2016, which was handed down at last Wednesdays budget meeting. The budget this year for capital expenditure is forecast to be $36.76 million; including funding for works to Councils extensive road network and items contained therein, such as: reseals, gravel road re-sheets, bridges, drainage and footpaths which will total approximately $5.978 million. In handing down the budget, Cr Gilmore noted, the recent appraisal of our finances and long-term viability by the Queensland Treasury Corporation which raised our future prospects as “moderate/neutral”, a vast improvement from the “very weak/negative” position predicted. "In achieving this, this Council has taken some very difficult decisions over the past year in a comprehensive restructure of our organisation, in reassessing our busi-
ness model and by the very careful establishment of new levels of service delivery which are compatible with the expectations of the community and reside within the community's capacity to pay," he said. "In this budget, increases for rates and charges are limited to a flat rate of 3.5 per cent. Further, this budget is balanced with the full funding of depreciation. This budget takes into account the repayment of the loan provided to the Mareeba Shire Council by the Queensland Treasury Corporation to fund the cost of de-amalgamation which will be repaid in full by 30 June, 2015 using existing Council reserves. As per our commitment last year, no de-amalgamation levy will be imposed. “This budget is very closely aligned to that predicted in our forecast of last year and to our 10 year financial plan; and has been designed to build on past decisions and to further lock in a sustainable future. “In recognition of the difficult times being faced by pensioners in our community, we have retained the pensioner discount of up to a maximum $240 on general rates.” All service charges, including water, sewerage and waste are increased by 3.5 per cent to ensure the viability of these services into the future. Emma Nicholls, Thomas Terzi, Bohdi Mathiet, Raquel France and Mandy Whybird (MSS Principal) are excited about the upcoming fete.
SMILES will be aplenty on June 19 – when the Mareeba State School P&C host their bi-annual fete – amid great excitement. Beginning at 5pm, there will be several entertainment options to keep the whole family amused; with all proceeds going towards purchasing new IT equipment for the school. MSS P&C President Marita Roberts said students were always excited to attend the event and will play a major part in the format of the evening. “There will be plenty of entertainment for the kids,
including a jumping castle, sideshow alley, and a solid array of food available,” she said. “The school band and choir will also put on a performance, with an awesome DJ also playing music on the night. “Our P&C would also like to thank Bendigo Community Bank, who will be sponsoring the fireworks at 9pm.” MSS Principal Mandy Whybird said the fete was a significant fundraiser for the school community; with students benefiting from proceeds.

“It’s also great to have so many of our families manning the stalls on the night and volunteering their time to help out,” she said. Ms Roberts added that the P&C were extremely appreciative of Mareeba Shire Council permitting access for Brady Park on the night, which will be the location for the fireworks display. In order to avoid disappointment, locals are encouraged to arrive early and park along either Atherton or Constance Street.
Atherton Supa IGA are committed to providing a quality workplace.
ATHERTON Supa IGA has been nominated for ‘Large Employer’ of the year at the upcoming Queensland Training Award regional finals, which will be held in Cairns in the coming weeks. Under the tutorage of owner Mike Shakes – the store has received countless examples of recognition – none more so than 2011, when the Atherton store was crowned “IGA Australia International Retailer of the Year”. The store is proudly local from the decor, all the way down to the juicy rib fillet steak which is sourced locally. Dynamic duo Sophie Qaudrio (Office Manager) and Marilyn Eakin (Customer Service Manager) said many had worked together to help put forward a successful application. “We put forward an application and got a call back from QTA, saying we had made the top five,” Ms Qaudrio said. “We then completed a phone interview; and then made the top three.” The phone interview covered important topics such as dealing with conflict management, along with the training provided to potential store trainees. The store has successfully trained over 100 school based trainees from Atherton State High School during recent times; with 13 currently completing their traineeships this year. Ms Eakin said that the store was proud of its diverse workforce; with staff members able to organise workable rosters which allow them to complete their school and tertiary studies.

Mareeba Shire Council 2015-16 Budget Mayor Gilmore hands down ‘balanced’ budget to maintain stability in region FROM PAGE 1 CR Gilmore announced the overall result will be, a balanced budget, with as low as possible increases in rates and charges, whilst guaranteeing a sustainable Council, with the long term forecast based on keeping future rate increases limited to
increases in the cost of operations. Depreciation is fully funded (which means we can work at keeping our existing assets at an appropriate level). Maintenance program for all assets including roads, bridges and built assets of $8.03 million. A Capital works program of $36.76 million including:
• $600,000 being reserved for a gravel re-sheet program • $165,00 intersection upgrades (High Chappparal Road/Monaro Close) • $590,000 road widening and seal, Chewko Road • $860,000 replaces Grove Bridge, Speewah • $1.1 million on urban streets in
Mareeba, Kuranda and Dimbulah • $1.54 million reseal program maintenance. In conclusion, Mr Gilmore said that this budget shows our position to be financially sustainable, with balanced budgets and future rate increases forecast to be in the general vicinity of the CPI; subject only to unpredictable outside influences.

Cnr Jenny Jensen: “A very responsible budget; and one that will see the Mareeba Shire benefit from in the long term.” Cnr Allan Holmes: “We have done what we have set out to do and that was to make MSC financially sound.” Cnr Mary Graham: “Staff has done a great job in preparing a very strong and responsible budget.” Cnr Allan Pedersen: “It’s very rewarding to me to bring down this budget and clear the DeAmalgamation debt without any cost to the rate payers.” Cnr Karen Ewin: “We worked well as a

It’s a privilege to be sitting on this council.” Cnr Nipper Brown: “A collective effort on behalf of Council and staff, this budget will hold MSC in good stead well into the future.” Mayor Tom Gilmore said: “This has not been easy, because in terms of principal we have to work towards long term physical stability and we are achieving that. “I can tell you now there are going to be unhappy people (because of the level of service) because we can’t fix everything. “The 3.5 per cent increase will allow us to continue the acceptable, reasonable and sustainable standard of service.

“This council is very deeply embedded within this community; we understand it very well, with the savings and changes we have made from here on in, it’s steady as she goes. “It’s taken us three budgets to get some money in the till for things like Christmas decorations, from basic things right through to the complex ones. “Once we get the paperwork done and the funding comes through, we’ll see work on these major infrastructure projects; namely the airport and the waste water treatment plant, before the end of the year. “There is still a lot of work to be done.” MSC CEO Peter Franks said: “The effort this Council and the staff have made to bring it

Gamboola Crossing The Gamboola Crossing (over the Mitchell River on Strathleven Road) consists of a short concrete bridge structure, followed by an extensive gravel crossing of the river at river bed level. During the dry season – the crossing is able to be accessed by vehicles – however in the wet season, the gravel crossing becomes washed out and becomes impassable. The damage to the gravel crossing is then repaired post-wet season with yearly maintenance costs. The then Tableland Regional Council made a submission for funding to the Queensland Reconstruction Authority through their ‘Betterment Program’ to upgrade the crossing given the contin-
ual costs involved in its yearly upkeep. The application was approved with a total allocation of $2.2 million set aside for the works; to which the Mareeba Shire Council was required to contribute $150,000. The upgraded crossing will consist of concrete link slabs held down by concrete piles in order to prevent overturning during a wet season. The crossing will still flood during the wet season, but the time of total closure will be reduced considerably however the ongoing problem of significant sand deposits will remain. The works are being undertaken under contract with the Tablelands Regional Council; as the Principal as the TRC were the original applicant for the funding. Any risks associated with the project are however the responsibility of Mareeba Shire Council. The works are proMaintenance gramed to be completSpecialists ed by 30 June 2015.

Recycling initiative proposed in Mareeba Shire Mareeba Shire Council has decided to seek expressions of interest from residents for the provision of a voluntary fee for a kerbside recycling service. The service would be based around the existing kerbside waste collection service routes and would attract a specific fee for the service. "This is a major step forward and one

TRC to take legal action over cash-split By Justin Fris
THE Tablelands Regional Council will launch a legal challenge against the current de-amalgamation cashsplit decision handed down by the Palaszczuk Government. Held during the confidential items of last Thursday’s TRC meeting, councillors voted unanimously in favour of the move. TRC CEO Ian Church – who has lobbied for several months on behalf of his jurisdiction – said the TRC remained unhappy with the current arrangement; and would appeal it. “The TRC is challenging the Minister’s decision under the Judicial Review Act of 1991,” he said. Mr Church added it was unclear as to how long an appeal process may take. Earlier in the meeting, an item regarding a heritage listing application from the Atherton Performing Arts was also discussed by councillors. A final vote of 5-1 (with Mayor Rosa Lee Long against) was tabled, with councillors endorsing an officer’s recommendation to officially object to the heritage list application.
www.theexpressnewspaper.com.au
Cr Geoff Stocker was diplomatic during his analysis, but said there was not ‘sufficient weight’ for the listing. Cr Peter Hodge added: “They’ve known from day one that I would not support a heritage listing site. The disadvantage of this would far outweigh the advantages.” Mr Church said: “This means that Council will not support the application made by Atherton Performing Arts to the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection to heritage list the APA igloo.” Mayor Rosa Lee Long also made an official retraction of remarks made against Cr Marjorie Pagani, during the ‘General Business’ component of the council meeting held on May 21. The remarks were regarding Cr Pagani’s official representative capacity and compliance during a recent senate enquiry meeting, regarding wind farm turbines. A motion tabling a full retraction request from Mayor Lee Long was passed through, with the support of fellow councillors. “If I upset you at the last meeting, I apologise,” Mayor Lee Long said.

Cedric Davies OAM 1936 - 2015 The Mareeba Community remembers former Mayor of Mareeba Shire Council and lifelong member of the Mareeba Rotary Club, Cedric Davies. Cedric Davies had a passion for many things during his life: his family, Rotary, playing music, stamp collecting, serving his community and living by the Rotary motto: “Service above self”. He had an ability to pull together the right people and right resources for the right price to make a project successful. Cedric Davies was born in Mareeba on the 29th January, 1936, at the maternity home in Constance Street, to parents Cedric Lewis and May Davies. Cedric commenced school at the Mareeba State Primary School during the war years, but when the army took over the school, he moved to the convent school; and finally to Page House at All Souls in Charters Towers. When he left school, he completed an apprenticeship as a mechanic with his father at the Advanx Garage, on the corner of Walsh and Atherton Streets. On April 22, 1961, Cedric married Bernice June Dick at the Methodist church in Mareeba. His father had opened the garage in 1932 and continued to operate it until his retirement, when Cedric and his wife June took it over. One of the games the garage staff would play with the kids walking past, was to plant two shillings on the footpath under a small amount of dirt with concealed wires hooked up to a battery; so that when the kids tried to pick the shillings up, they got a slight shock. Cedric and June later sold the garage and bought school bus runs, which they continued to operate until June retired in 1996 and Cedric in 1998. There are many people that remember their days on the buses. Cedric was a Councillor of the Mareeba Shire
Council for six years and Chairman for fifteen years. In his combined total of 21 years service, he passionately supported the Shire and believed until the end that it was the best Shire in Queensland. In his time on Council, he travelled to many parts of the Shire to attend functions. One of Cedric’s other interests was rugby league. He would talk about the results of the weekend games; especially his favourite Queensland teams: Broncos, Cowboys and Titans, as any team from Queensland was his favourite. He did not have much time for Phil Gould or NSW. Cedric played in the ‘Night Owls’ dance band at functions around the district. He had a great fondness for the ‘Mareeba Town’ band and started playing in it from a young age, where his instrument of choice was the soprano trumpet. When Peter and Kevin (Cedric and June’s children) were old enough to walk and get their lungs full of air to blow a good note, they started playing in the band also. Cedric was a member of the Mareeba Rotary club and held various positions and maintained 51 years at 100 per cent attendance; an attendance he was very proud of and strived to maintain even when away from Mareeba. Recently, when in Cairns Hospital, he mentioned that he would miss the Field Days, one of the many functions he would help out at. A favourite outing was the Wheelbarrow Race, which he and his wife June attended to cheer on the competitors and admire the costumes of the Mareeba Rotary team at Almaden as they crossed the finish line.
As a lifelong member of Rotary, he was instrumental in coordinating many Rotary projects. Some of those projects included the Junior Youth Speaking for primary school student’s in grades 6 & 7. He was Chairman of the New Zealand Matched Twin 3 month Youth Exchange program. The 12 month exchange students program saw Cedric and June host many students who came to Mareeba on the Rotary youth exchange program. He received a Paul Harris Fellow Sapphire; a Vocational Service Leadership Award. A Four Avenues of Service Citation that recognized his consistent demonstrated support for the object of Rotary through participation in service activities in each of the avenues of Club, Vocational, Community and International Service. Throughout his life, Cedric served the Mareeba community through many other avenues and received numerous awards including: Contributed as a board member on the Garden Settlement, Port Authority, Fire Brigade and Mareeba Hospital Boards, an auxiliary fire fighter for 25 years. Cedric coordinated the relocation of a house from Rankin Street to the Garden Settlement for Blue Nurses and also the Principal's house from primary state school to near the Garden Settlement for the Uniting minister to reside in. He organised a school room to be shifted from the primary state school to Borzi Park for the Mareeba Town Band Hall, and was very involved with the swimming club. He was President of the West Football Club and even carried the Olympic Torch in the Relay Team for the Melbourne Olympic Games in 1956.
He built the ‘Bridge of Recovery’ in the West Wing gardens of the Mareeba Hospital. Built new restrooms at the Mareeba Rotary Park, and tiled and painted the rest rooms at Mary Andrew's Park. In 1988, he received a Local Government Association of Queensland Certificate of Service (20 Years) as a member of the Mareeba Shire Council; received the Australia Day Citizens Award in 1991 and received an Order of Australia Medal in 1993. There were many people that he collaborated with, in and around Mareeba, that helped with all of these projects and contributed their time and resources to the Mareeba community. Cedric’s happiest moments were when all of his family were together. He was much loved, respected and admired for his ability to get things done, letting his actions speak louder than words, his compassion, generosity, quick wit, understanding, commitment, his determination and negotiation skills. Rest in Peace Cedric Davies OAM.

AURUKUN was the place to be in Cape York last weekend, where the much fabled ‘Wik Rock’ concert was held, with Christine Anu the star of the show. Funded through the local PCYC’s ‘Indigenous Active Today’ program – which is supported by several notable community organisations – the event provided local residents a week-long slate of activities. A documentary about the local hip hop scene was filmed throughout the week; with local artists receiving greater promotion about their songs. Apunipima Health Promotion Officer Andrew Packer said the idea of the ‘Hip Hop Project’ documentary was all about promoting healthy outcomes and bringing the local community together. “Engaging with young people in this way and getting them to develop dance skills around healthy lifestyle messages has a real impact on influencing positive change in their lives.” “It’s about us helping young people to turn ‘deadly choices’ into routine choices.”
New tool to manage biosecurity-related risks A new biosecurity-based tool will give agricultural producers greater opportunity to combat disease and unwanted pests. Developed by the Livestock Biosecurity Network (LBN) – the tool provides quality biosecurity-based checklists – which is tailored to assist producers both identify and manage potential risks. Northern Australia LBN Regional Officer, Dr Sarah-Jane Wilson is encouraging local producers to opt in to the product. “Biosecurity is such a broad and imposing topic, encompassing any activities taken to prevent the introduction and spread of livestock disease, weeds or pest species, and it can be difficult for livestock producers to know where to start,” she said.
“Our biosecurity management tool is made up of simple checklists for on-farm activities and biosecurity-related documentation, covering eight priority areas. “We also provide support documents and reference materials to make the system easier to implement.” As part of assisting with the transition of the new management-based tool, Dr Wilson said several information workshops were being held for producers interested in adopting it. “Australia has a unique position in the trade of livestock products, with an excellent reputation for safe and diseasefree product,” she said. Implementing documented farm biosecurity practices helps our livestock producers enhance and take full advantage of our trading position.” If you would like to learn more, or acquire this new technology for your property, please visit: www.lbn.org.au
NBN comes to MSC region OVER 1,500 properties within the Mareeba Shire Council region will finally have access to faster wireless internet. As part of the National Broadband Network (NBN), MSC Mayor Tom Gilmore said the area would be awash with information in readiness. “Work is underway in parts of the following communities, Biboohra, Deep Gorge, Julatten, surrounds of Mareeba and Mount Molloy,” he said. “Fast broadband enables residents to access e-health services, distance education and entertainment on demand, while businesses will now have the ability to increase productivity, reduce costs and access new markets. “NBN Co will be conducting information sessions to help the community understand more about the NBN and what it means for them.” Local residents are invited to attend the session on Wednesday, June 10, at 2.30pm, situated in the Mareeba Shire Council Library. If you can’t make it at 2.30pm, there is also another session from 5.00pm to 6.00pm. RSVP’s are not necessary to attend the session. KAP continue to make waves KATTERS Australia Party state crossbenchers Robbie Katter and Shane Knuth (Member for Dalrymple) have continued
their outstanding representation of the Far North in state politics. The latest victory – which involves the plumbing industry – is designed to improve safety standards and growth for all involved within the sector. Upon securing their winning amendment, Mr Knuth said: “I have already made it clear that the KAP has long held the view that the installation of a water meter is plumbing work that should only be performed by a fully qualified and licensed plumber,” he said. “These are qualified people who have been training for years to do this job. “Without installation by real plumbers damage was being caused to both homes and the industry.” Mr Knuth added that he was committed to rural and regional employment; which would be a massive boost to many towns. “Work like this serves as the bread and butter of our regional plumbers, many are only just hanging on since the changes by the Newman Government,” he said. “If we want to keep our tradesman in regional areas, and boost employment we need to ensure they have sustainable work. “Retaining tradesman in our regions means we are retaining their future - We are focusing on the bigger picture here.”
Yarrabah takes a stand FOOTBALLERS across the Far North have stood united in their disapproval of domestic violence; in a bid to quell this alarming trend across Australia. A new campaign has been launched in Queensland – dubbed ‘Put the passion into the game, not violence’ – and it is hoped that local footballers will prove to be good role models for others in the community. Palaszczuk Government treasurer (and Member for Mulgrave) Curtis Pitt said domestic violence-related issues were far too common for many living within our state. “Every day in Queensland there are about 180 reports of domestic and family violence incidents to the police and many more go unreported,” he said. “One in six Australian women has experienced physical abuse by a current or former partner compared with one in 19 men, and one in four Australian women has experienced emotional abuse in an intimate relationship compared with one in seven men. “Unfortunately, the figures are significantly higher for Indigenous women who are 35 times more likely to be hospitalised for spouse/domestic partner assaults than members of the general female population.” Players from both the Yarrabah Seahawks and Mossman/ Port Douglas Sharks took part in a specially-themed matchup, which was facilitated in part by the Yarrabah Aboriginal Co-op.
Avoid a fine, pay on time DOG owners with the Tablelands Regional Council jurisdiction have until Tuesday, June 30, to register their pooches. Failure to do so will result in receiving a fine of $237; with TRC Mayor Rosa Lee Long urging local residents to pay ahead of time. “Puppies under three months old, assistance dogs and working dogs are all free to register, with a de-sexed dog only $14 to register for a year,” she said. Annual registration fees are $75 per dog ($39 if you are a pensioner), with all dogs born post-2010 also requiring a microchip.

Divide over Great Barrier Reef listing THE Palaszczuk Government is firmly siding with the World Heritage Council, after a recent decision regarding the status of the Great Barrier Reef. WHC officials have deemed the reef ‘not endangered’ and Palaszczuk ministers will attend a conference in Germany next month to discuss the matter. Deputy Premier Jackie Trad said: “This was a key election promise and that is why we committed $100 million over five years towards water quality initiatives to help achieve these targets. “Let me make this very clear - our government is committed to putting the future of the reef beyond doubt. “We were elected with a mandate to save the reef for generations to come and we intend to deliver on those promises. “I will be working hard with the Minister for the Great Barrier Reef in Bonn at the end of the month, to strongly argue our case on behalf of all Queenslanders.” Colleague Dr Steven Miles, who is Minister for the Great Barrier Reef, said the WHC’s vote of confidence mirrored the mindset of the Palaszczuk Government. “This is great news and an overwhelming endorsement of our efforts and new approach to reef protection,” Dr Miles said. The new Queensland Government has been quick to take action on a range of issues affecting the reef and will introduce legislation in the next sitting of Parliament that will ban the dumping of port-related capital dredge
spoil in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. The government has also vowed to clean up water running into the reef. “We have set ambitious targets of reducing nitrogen runoff by up to 80 per cent and sediment runoff by up to 50 per cent in key catchment areas.” LNP Opposition Leader Lawrence Sprinborg said his party welcomed the news, and highlighted the LNP vision for the reef. The LNP Government did more than any other Queensland government to address the issues affecting the Reef,” Mr Springborg said. “The Reef was put on the watch list under State and Federal Labor Governments in 2011 and because of the LNP, at a state and federal level, it has come off. “It was the LNP that drafted and developed the 2050 Long-Term Sustainability Plan. This plan is now providing the framework to manage and protect the Great Barrier Reef for the next 35 years. “We also invested $35 million each year to improve water quality and $1 million to help control excessive numbers of the crown-of-thorns starfish. “It was the LNP that introduced the toughest laws ever to protect the Great Barrier Reef by formally recognising the world heritage area as an area of ‘special significance’ meaning any individual or corporation causing serious environmental harm will be charged under the most serious offences.”
RAVENSHOE teenager Melissa Kelly (pictured) is one of several rural women committed to the issues facing local farmers. Passionate about issues and the various financial uncertainty faced by many dedicated farming families, Ms Kelly brought her vision to life and has shared it on the national stage. Under the title of ‘Boots for Change’, the concept involves everyone donning their best pair of boots and heading down to their town’s local food market. In a bid to increase discussion of where local produce comes, it hoped that many across all rural communities will unite and show their appreciation. Ms Kelly was victorious in a local ‘Heywire’ competition, which is
designed to give young regional Australians a platform to pitch their innovation. She then travelled to Canberra and spent time with four other women from across Australia, who all shared a similar vision. Members of the Gulf Cattlemen’s Association noticed Ms Kelly’s entrepreneurial talent and have backed her application in the national competition. As one of eight finalists, ‘Boots for Change’ is in the running to secure funding from the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal. Applications are carefully considered and face stringent guidelines which must be adhered to. Letters of support from businesses can also aid applications, along with other documented sources of project funding.

The LAND Israeli- inspired method to help curb Panama TR4 ISRAEL could provide the solution for helping Far North banana growers quell the impacts of diseases such as Panama Tropical Race 4. The israel-based agricultural biotechnology company is looking to trial tissue cultured banana varieties in major Australian growing areas and to collaborate on developing a variety resistant to Panama disease. Several North Queensland growers, hosted by Haifa Australia and Lindsay Rural, recently visited the plant propagation, selection and breeding company, Rahan Meristem, located near Israel’s north-west border with Lebanon. While it could be some time before the company’s varieties are commercially available in Australia, the growers were excited with the opportunity to access its tissue cultured technologies for the local industry. Rahan Meristem, the world’s leading exporter of tissue cultured banana and plantain, also hopes to work with researchers and growers to develop a Panama Tropical Race 4 (TR4) resistant variety. “The company is already working with Philippines growers to identify TR4 resistant types and it has clonal material being screened for TR4 resistance in Holland,” he said. Scientific Director Dr Eli Khayat told the growers Mr Meristem was seeking to pass Australian quarantine and establish two field trials in the country’s major growing areas. “Then we will identify a laboratory for tissue culture and propagation of material,’’ Dr Khayat said. “I am certain that our material will be helpful to growers in Australia.’’ Mr Meristem takes superior clones of leading cultivated idio-types and evaluates them for increased yield and fruit quality in tropical and subtropical climates. This results in preferred selections of pest and disease-free banana cultivars and plants capable of increasing plantation profits. “Every year we take the best 20 per cent of the population and we propagate only these in the laboratory, then we select the best 2-3 pc of clones,’’ Dr Khayat said. “In the selection, we focus on quality and the appearance of plants, including uniformity, but most important is the genetic constitution of plants. We try to remove off-types.’’ This selection and then re-introduction into the tissue culture ensures seedlings supplied by Mr Meristem are always at the top level of the genetic potential of the particular variety.
He said Mr Meristem’s work with cultivar selection was some of the best in the world because it was effectively positioned in an “island area’’. “We have quarantine in Israel and we also have island quarantine or a closed environment here because we are bordered by the sea, the mountains and Lebanon,” he said. The company has two laboratories in Columbia, one in Ecuador, is looking to develop a laboratory in the Philippines; and has a major distribution centre in Costa Rica. Its major markets are in Central America, while it is also active in the Caribbean, Middle East, Africa and the Philippines. Dr Khayat said with Cavendish, generally a taller plant would produce a bigger bunch, but Mr Meristem had successfully developed a dwarf plant with a big bunch, weighing up to 70 kilograms in boxes. Another promising variety was Adi, a second generation after Grand Nain that could trigger interest from Australian growers due to its ability to withstand strong winds. It is short with strong stems and, importantly, produces big bunches. Tully grower Steve Lowe said Mr Meristem’s use of somaclonal variation in its selection and breeding was impressive. “The way they use this technique and keep selecting in the field and regenerating plants until they get what they want is very good,’’ Mr Lowe said. “They also have at least four varieties in South America that are not used here.’’ Innisfail grower Shayne Cini said the company’s plant selection, continually taking the best 20 per cent of the population for propagation, and its tissue culture in the laboratory was ahead of similar work in Australia. Lindsay Rural North Queensland Regional Manager Shane O’Flanagan agreed Mr Meristem’s continuous selection to identify the best performing varieties and its moves to develop types tolerant of TR4 were impressive. Mr O’Flanagan said like the company’s location in an “island area’’, Australia was an island nation and while its banana industry currently had a problem, latest technologies showed that, with the proper knowledge, there could be a successful solution. Banana growers will have the opportunity to meet with Haifa Australia and Lindsay Rural at the 2015 Australian Banana Industry Congress to be held in Melbourne from June 17-20. Local banana growers look certain to be healthily represented at the event.

Mossman Mill crushed 29,761 tonnes for Week 3 of the 2015 crushing season at an average CCS of 9.84. The factory has now processed 83,702 tonnes of cane for the season. The major stops in Week 3 were due to high juice levels and a planned 36-hour maintenance stop to repair a leaking tube in the JTA boiler. Pleasingly, crushing rates have returned to expected levels. The crop is cutting at 95% of estimate, however it is too early to see if this trend will hold for the remaining season. Rain at the end of the week contributed to some cane supply issues and increased mud loadings in the factory. CRUSH STATISTICS: • Mossman tonnes crushed for the week: 29,761 tonnes • CCS for week: 9.84 • Total cane crushed to date: 83,702 tonnes • CCS average to date: N/A • 2015 crop estimate: 1,030,000 tonnes

Sugar companies unite for safety campaign PROMINENT sugar companies across the Far North have united in a bid to improve awareness of rail crossing safety during the crushing season. Representatives from Mackay, Wilmar and Tully Sugar all intend to minimise the amount of accidents which can arise from cars colliding with cane trains each year. A heavily presence on social media is planned – which is designed to focus on positive driver behaviour traits – to hopefully get the message through. Mackay Sugar representative Lorelei van Dalen said: “More often than not, the near misses at our crossings involve motorists ignoring the flashing lights and racing across the crossing to beat the approaching cane train.
“This sort of behaviour could one day result in a fatality. “We’d like to urge drivers to be alert when approaching cane train crossings and, if the lights are flashing, we want drivers to STOP and not take any risks. “Our locomotives travel at a relatively low speed, but they’re heavy and are often carrying a heavy load, which means they can’t stop in a hurry. “The new advertising campaign depicts the two most common scenarios that result in near misses at our cane train crossings. “We’ve joined forces with Wilmar Sugar and Tully Sugar to deliver this campaign because cane train safety is a shared priority across the whole sugar industry.”

entertainment A ROYAL NIGHT OUT
RISING SUN MOVIE NEWS
May 8, 1945: V-E day. As the whole of London is on the streets to celebrate the official end of World War II in Europe, the two royal princesses Elizabeth (Sarah Gadon) and Margaret (Bel Powley) have a royal night out, when they slip out of Buckingham Palace to go dancing at the Ritz – incognito.
One of the most eagerly anticipated films of recent times comes to The Rising Sun Cinema in Mareeba, this week. JURASSIC WORLD is a monumental production that takes over from where JURASSIC PARK left off. This sci-fi adventure has breathtaking effects and plenty of new dinasaurs and it begins at the Rising Sun at exactly the same time as the rest of Australia. The enchanting TOMORROWLAND continues for the next week, and today Wednesday, you have one last chance to see the hilarious spy spoof SPY and the charming A ROYAL NIGHT OUT.
SPY
Susan Cooper is an unassuming, deskbound CIA analyst, and the unsung hero behind the Agency's most dangerous missions. But when her partner falls off the grid and another top agent is compromised, she volunteers to go deep undercover to infiltrate the world of a deadly arms dealer, and prevent a global crisis. Vareiety Magazine had this to say after a preview screening: SPY is smart , endearing and hilarious
TOMORROWLAND
Twenty-two years after the events of Jurassic Park (1993), Isla Nublar now features a fully functioning dinosaur theme park, Jurassic World, as originally envisioned by John Hammond. After 10 years of operation and visitor rates declining, in order to fulfill a corporate mandate, a new attraction is created to re-spark visitor's interest, which backfires horribly.
Bound by a shared destiny, a bright, optimistic teen bursting with scientific curiosity and a former boy-genius inventor jaded by disillusionment embark on a danger-filled mission to unearth the secrets of an enigmatic place somewhere in time and space that exists in their collective memory as "Tomorrowland."

entertainment E! Eureka Rodeo action
Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift calls on Far North Queensland fellas to man up and grow their support for blokes impacted by cancer.
Action from last year’s Eureka Creek Rodeo. Photo peter Roy. The Eureka Creek Rodeo, hosted by the Nugget of the North Campdraft Inc, is on this coming weekend, June 13, and it promises to be an action packed day of spills and thrills. The days kicks off at 9am and continues all day and night with the main performance from 6.30pm under lights. There will be a full bar, great food and live music until late; camping will be available for those who wish to sleep under the stars. This tremendous community event is held each year at the Eureka Creek Sporting Grounds, on Eureka Creek Station, via the Burke Development Road, 10 kilometres west of Dimbulah. So bring your cowboy boots and swag, kick up some dust and have the time of your life. For more information call Megan on 4093 6078.

Far North Queensland blokes – it’s time to man up for your fellow fella!
There comes a time in every man’s life when he must beard – and that time is now! Which is why I’m calling on all Far North Queensland bearded brothers and beard lovers to start embracing the glorious facial fuzz, in an effort to beat men’s cancers following the launch of Beard150 by CCQ. We’re looking for 150 Queensland men to join our 150-day beard-wagon in the hope of raising more than $150,000 for research into men’s cancers. And with Men’s Health Week just around the corner (June 15-21) there is no better excuse to ditch the daily chore of being clean shaven and show your support for your fellow brother. Around two men every day in Far North Queensland receive the news they have cancer, and sadly more than 270 will die from the disease this year alone. Far North Queensland blokes are invited to grow their beard any shape, style or length donate to the cause directly, sponsor a loved one to grow a beard, or pledge to shave or colour their facial fuzz to raise vital funds for cancer research, education and patient support services. One in two Queensland men will be diagnosed with cancer in their lifetime. This year alone more than 4000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer, 2000 with melanoma and 1700 with bowel cancer and sadly nearly 4800 of these men will die from the disease.
We need to do more to improve survival rates and support all men affected – and Beard150 is a unique fundraising event that allows us to do just that. While men fare well on many economic indicators, such as earnings and employment progression, in health they face poorer outcomes than women across a wide range of key indicators. Health areas of concern for men include lower life expectancy, higher levels of avoidable mortality and higher mortality from almost all common causes of death including cancer. Ultimately, Beard150 aims to help improve health outcomes for all Queensland men by lowering their risks of cancer and increasing their chances of survival. Research estimates that up to one-third of cancers and 40 per cent of deaths from cancer worldwide could be prevented through making simple lifestyle changes including quitting smoking, participating in screening programs, eating healthily, staying active and being SunSmart. Beard150 gives men more muscle to talk about cancer, to prevent it, to get checked, and to support other men who are going through the battle. To man up and grow your support by registering or sponsoring a mate, visit Beard150.com or call 1300 65 65 85 More information about Cancer Council Queensland is available at www.cancerqld.org.au or Cancer Council’s 13 11 20.

EXPRESS sPORT ‘Deadley’ outing by youngsters
Regional Champions: Atherton Schools U12 Girls team with coaches Lachlan Peden and Stef De Faveri.
Tableland girls make football history No-one can remember the last time a Tablelands team has won the Regional Girls’ Under 12 Schools Championship – if ever! Last Sunday in Cairns, seven regional district girls’ teams took part in the Championship. The ‘Atherton Schools’ team was made up of students from: Tolga, Yungaburra, Malanda, Jubillee, St Joseph’s and St Stephen’s schools. The girls played extremely well winning five of six games and only losing 1-0 to the 2nd placed, ‘Cairns Schools’. Their effort won them the Championship by one point. A strong and resilient defensive effort meant the girls conceded a miserly three goals throughout the day; whilst the energetic midfield allowed the forward line to run amok, scoring a combined tally of 15 goals. Coach, Lachlan Peden, praised the efforts of the girls. “I always knew they had the potential to do well if they applied themselves on the day,” he said.
“This is the culmination of a lot of hard work over the past few years in terms of the Tablelands Junior Soccer Association’s girls’ development strategy. “A lot of these schoolgirls have been a part of this and we’re starting to see some real success. Of course there is still plenty of room for improvement.” As a result of the girls’ on field success, six of the team were chosen to take part in the final selection trials for the Peninsula U12 Girls Team. They include: Jane Close, Vicki Owokran, Bridget Peden, Carter Stacey, Amity Williams and Kayleigh Capella were all invited to trial. Once selected, the Peninsula Girls will take part in the Queensland State Championships to be held in Brisbane later this year. “They’ll have to work even harder to make the Peninsula side; but, even if they don’t get selected, they can hold their heads high for being part of the most successful Tablelands girls team ever,” Mr Peden said.
Tableland Racing Pigeon Club commences racing for 2015 The Tableland Racing Pigeon Club held its first two races from Mt Garnet on the 16th and 23rd of May with different teams of pigeons competing in each race. Mt Garnet is a sprint race for the pigeons with most birds returning to their lofts in just over the hour. The line of flight distance for this race for most club members is 70 kilometres. All pigeon racing teams are transported to the release point (Mt Garnet) by a club member and released an hour after their arrival. As the race distance increases the pre-race rest period also increases. All birds are released together and race to their home loft at various locations on the Tableland. Members have lofts as far north as Mt

OVERRIDING enthusiasm shone through for the youthful MBA Deadleys last Thursday night, recording a stirring 41-39 win over the Red Devils. The win – which was keenly celebrated by the Deadleys – has tightened the race for the top two even further. In terms of general game play, this match was one of the stranger contests that you could ever witness. Neither side could maintain a solid continual burst of scoreboard pressure; and determining who had overall momentum at times was a serious challenge. In the opening three minutes of the opening term, only one bucket was sunk. Additionally, it took the Deadleys (who went 3/15 from the field) almost half of the quarter to sink their first points. It would then take the Deadleys a further two minutes to register their subsequent basket; yet the usual zest from the Devils was noticeably lacking, resulting in an 8-6 lead at the interval. Ash Cater was a notable on-court presence from the opening tip-off. He fought for every ball and provided excellent offensive pressure around the glass when needed. The three point shot can be a fickle temptress; it is easy to fall in love with it, but it can burn you if you are chasing the game. Both sides (Deadleys 3/19 for the night and Red
Devils 1/15) kicked the ball out beyond the key regularly for no luck, but gradually both reverted to more conservative ball in the final half. After a short and sharp pep talk, the Deadleys began to shoot better from the field in the second quarter and began to rattle the seasoned Red Devils. Seeing top teams get challenged during a game is one of sport’s greatest treats. You can witness those who can handle the pressure and heat, along with those who prefer to let others do the work. Taking the lead for the first time only minutes from half time, the lead quickly skipped out to seven points; and the Red Devils were up against it. Irritability crept into the contest during the second off, with both teams intent on wrestling the contest from each other. Red Devils players began to bunch up after each Deadleys score and lacked their usual polish moving up-court. Clinton Cameron did his usual best to help fire his charges, but on this night they were to be denied by a hungrier side. In the earlier game, the Stingrays shrugged off two consecutive draws and dispatched the Barras with a 62-30 victory. Injuries and various commitments have played their part; but wins do the world of good and the ‘Rays have been able to take advantage of the Devils’ slip up.
Roosters enter second round with confidence THE Atherton Roosters will be keen to build on their derby success over Mareeba, by defeating Suburbs this Sunday afternoon in Gordonvale. It was during their Easter Thursday clash against Suburbs where the Roosters began to turn their fortunes around; and many supporters would see this as a very winnable game. After a promising start to the season – even topping the table for several weeks – Suburbs have gradually slumped into the middle of the CDRL table. Suburbs coach Greg Annison has had to deal with a mounting injury list; which has been compounded by several tight losses against quality opposition. The side began in round five - when they were arguably robbed of an attempt of victory against Edmonton – when the lights went out, the match was abandoned and a replay of the match was denied. After defeating Brothers Innisfail a week later, frus-
trating losses against Yarrabah and Brothers Cairns ensued; before a win against Mossman/Port Douglas and last round’s narrow defeat against Ivanhoes. In comparison, the Roosters suffered two heartbreaking back to back losses against Ivanhoes and Brothers Cairns; before joining wins against Kangaroos, Yarrabah and Mareeba, with their only defeat against Mossman/ Port Douglas in round eight. Opting to train during the general bye, Jamie Blain’s men are confident of improving even further during the second half of the season. The Roosters are currently two games out of finals contention – and if they want to seriously challenge for a spot in the top five – a win against Suburbs is nonnegotiable. If the Roosters can successfully control the middle of the field and spread the load evenly, they have every opportunity to walk away with victory.
MUFC complete Rangers rout in cup tie By Justin Fris
THE Mareeba Bulls advanced to the next round of the Sportscene FNQ cup, after a comprehensive 5-1 lashing of the Marlin Coast Rangers last Wednesday evening at Endeavour Park. A result which greatly pleased Bulls coach Alex Srhoj, has served its purpose as an ideal tune up for this Saturday night’s league fixture against Edge Hill United. Both Anthony Mete and Wayne Srhoj cut the Rangers defence to ribbons, feasting on the Rangers goal like a growing teenage boy at an all-you-can- eat buffet. Mete scored a hat trick, while Srhoj scored a satisfying brace; although it could have been a wider margin,
due to the creative delivery to the forwards. MUFC will be looking to continue their 100 per cent record in 2015 this week and is currently the only side in the league not to drop points yet. Due to the nature of fixturing, the Bulls currently have dropped to 2nd place, trailing Stratford by one point. However, the Bulls have two games in hand, which can override this advantage. Ahead of the game against the Tigers, coach Srhoj said:“We are itching to play; it has been three weeks since we played in the league, but luckily enough, we had a cup game last week to keep us where we need to be.” The weekend will see football at Borzi Park across both Friday night and Saturday.

Bull riding returns to Atherton IN an exciting announcement for the Tablelands, bull riding will make an eagerly awaited return to Roosters Stadium on October 10. Hosted by Professional Bull Riders Australia, the night will see 40 of Australia’s best go head to head. PBR GM Glen Young said: “It (Roosters Stadium) is a great facility and has always attracted strong attendances in the past. “So we are looking forward to re-establishing one of our annual signature Touring Pro Series Events back in this market.” All points and prize-money won will count towards PBR World Standings rankings, which in turn is a major incentive for the sports riders all eager to use the Australian pathway to qualify into the USA major league Built Ford Tough competitions. The stand-alone bull riding event is expected to attract thousands of fans from the

North Queensland area, many of whom will be from areas outside the region, which in turn will deliver a strong economic impact for the town. Young added: “Bulls will be hand-picked from all over Queensland to ensure the bull power is equal or if not better than most competitions. “We do as it is important that each and every rider has equal opportunity to win and the fans get the opportunity to witness great match ups. “One of the key factors for us deciding to return to Atherton is identifying young up and coming bull riding talent in the north. “We have one of our marquee televised events in Cairns Convention Centre annually and the Atherton Event will play a key pathway role to this event for NQ’s young riders well into the future.” Tickets for the event will go on sale in late July.
