WHERE? > PUERTO EL MORRO, ECUADOR Puerto el Morro is a small fisherman village of about 2000 people in Ecuador, underserved and formally unrecognized. It is located very close to the Olmos estuary in the Manglares El Morro refuge. Looking through the Google maps it is hard to identify the village, as it does not have a formal map and can only be located via satellite imagery.
>
WHERE? > PUERTO EL MORRO, ECUADOR Sources of income in the village are fishing, shrimping.
WHO? > PUERTO EL MORRO, ECUADOR The community is very strong, with great potential and enthusiasm, but no resources available to address the free roaming piglet issue.
WHAT? > PIGS AND COMMUNITY History of pig ownership has been long present in the community. They are treated with respect and become part of the family. Almost every family has one or two pigs. This fact makes a simple solution of creating farm-like infrastructures impossible and damaging for the community, as it will disregard their way of living.

WHAT? > PIGS AND COMMUNITY FREE ROAMING PIGS
• Picking through garbage • Soling the street • Creating repellent place for residents and tourists
WHAT? > SANITARY ISSUE Numerous kinds of organic dust, microorganisms and mycotoxins cause a serious sanitary threat to the well being of kids and elderly as well as respiratory and bacteria hazard. The sanitary conditions demand a change for the better health of residents, potential tourism influx and therefore strengthening of economic stability and overall life improvement. This has been a great concern that our community partner, APROFE, has asked us to address.
WHAT? > RESEARCH: FARM VISIT IDEAS We found inspiration in the strategy of chicken tunnels, which regulate chicken grazing, to control the movement of the pigs in the town.
WHAT? > RESEARCH: FARM VISIT IDEAS Introduce a food scraps collection program to support the needs of the pigs. Provide all necessary conditions to keep pigs from attempting to escape.
HOW? > OUR PROPOSAL: PIG “WAY Our Goal is to create a unique infrastructure that will allow Pigs of Puerto el Morro to co-exist with people in a more controlled and structured way without giving up their freedom and cultural proximity while creating a healthier, positive and uniting environment for both.
