The Greenhouse is a 5 storey height space (section page 5), thirty by 6 meters in plan and fifteen meters tall. The structural bays are six meters squared. The enclosure is a cable truss system with spider fittings suspended from the round section, concrete filled steel columns (section - page 5). The outer row of columns is tied back to the first where the slab is suspended, offset from the structural grid. This system acts as a buffer zone to the remainder of the building. The space has a separate mechanical system and is used to allow for natural ventilation into the remainder of the building.

The proposed is a greenhouse on the south façade of a 5 storey building. The building is part of a complex of buildings which act as an academic retreat for Ryerson University which houses seminar and presentation space, a gallery and food services as well as apartment style and guest accommodations. It is located directly south of CALC and south west of the intersection of Broadview and Danforth. The Bloor Viaduct Bridge located to the north passes over the Don Valley to the West alongside Riverdale Park to the south (site plan - page 3). Views to both proximate surrounding nature and distant Toronto skyline are highlighted. The buildings throughout the complex are rectilinear steal construction with heavy timber truss bridges connecting the buildings at differing angles. 4th Year Option Studio - Local Food Landscapes - 2013 Urban agriculture initiative with Rye Home Grown - Site Ryerson Campus
How do we house agriculture in an accelerating urban environment? Urban agriculture is growing in popularity, most effective when implemented into a community scenario. Rye home grown continues to develope systems on the Ryerson Campus and would benefit from increased growing space and community involvement. The development of the growing space is accelerated through the use of the UUA’s (Units for Urban Agriculture). The Sears parking lot site is an example of a development site that has been purchased and will sit unused for a certain number of years, in this case ten. These sites have great potential for urban agriculture. UUA’s are designed as greenhouses which fit into individual parking spaces. They can easily be deployed in stages and in any amount. After their time on the site comes to an end they can be moved to any other parking lot or street parking space. These units can phase out the density of parking in the city center as we evolve to use more sustainable means of transportation.

The UUA can stand alone amongst vehicles or be placed in a series of patterns on a lot to create dynamic spaces. Between two units tensile canopies provide shade and shelter. These modular, versatile structures do not have the sole purpose of growing. They can be used as information booths, office spaces, study spaces or galleries. In the above diagrams UUA’s are combined with the use of modular planters and outdoor seating which can be stored within the frame structures during off seasons. At this time the canopy can also be tied up. The initial phasing of the Sears parking lot site occurs along Dundas street where there is the highest visibility. Information and social units as well as educational growing units can be used in this location to provoke interest in the project and encourage new participants from the school and the community. As the project is further developed and increased through Rye Home Grown, individual UUA’s can be invested into by students and community members. A participant can be given the essential unit structure which can then be developed in terms of the interior components in accordance to the interest of the participant or their availability of means.

The growing units themselves can house a range of food production from hydroponic leafy greens to intensive aquaponic systems. Not only can the units function as producers of fresh local produce but they can be used for weekly farmers markets where Participants can make a profit from their produce on an individual basis or through Rye Home Grown. The Structure is a simple quintessential frame made of aluminium L brackets. The envelope and interior components fit into this frame. There is flexibility in the enveloping materials as well. The interior components can be anything from hanging pop bottle planters to sub irrigated planters made in rubber storage containers or even purchased systems.

Pictured is a primarily polycarbonate clad unit with thermally modified wood paneling on the base for durability and shading purposes as well as corrugated plastic roofing. The roof plane collects water into a basin inside which water is also directed to from the canopy. The front of the unit has sliding doors and a fold out ramp for accessibility. One side has sliding doors for ventilation and farmers market scenarios. The form and size of the units are designed in a way that they do not shade their neighbors. Inside the units planters can be replaced by seating or tables. The next step for the UUA is its adaptability to street parking and other places around the city which can create a dynamic secondary sidewalk frontage and differentiate from the regularity of street parking.

A dense city office tower which functions like businesses on city streets; reuniting the people with the streets and opening up to the ground plane; connecting the people with businesses, amenities, landscapes, and each other; respecting the city, the landscape, and the individual. 2nd Year Design Studio 3 - 2011 Body in Motion Cabbage Town/Regent Park Co-operative housing
As a facility which focuses on water it is important that rain water is collected and reused. The surrounding neighborhoods of Cabbage Town and Regent Park gives this project i diverse and unique from what all ready exists in Toronto for recreational swim. The common factory amongst the surrounding inhabitants is a lack of large backyards and private pools. The project aims to bring the two neighborhoods together and focus on small, personal interactions between the inhabitants passing through on a regular basis. Focusing on the community and livability, the enclosed site situated on an existing parking lot surrounded by a housing cooperative. The site is essentially the communal backyard for these residences and the businesses on Parliament. The Public Backyard Pools allows for increases site movement. The program is divided into three buildings, and administrative building, a public pool and a pool which can be reserved for special events.
