This studio project participated at the IX Bienal José Miguel Aroztegui; Concurso Estudiantil Íbero-Americano de Arquitectura Bioclimática in Brazil and received an Honorable Mention. In Panama there is a huge availability of shipping containers just waiting to be reused. The proposed site is located on the shores of Lake Gatun, it is accessible by land or sea and has an adjacent railroad track; making it perfect to receive incoming containers. This temporary shelter has the capacity to accommodate up to 277 families in case of a disaster. Containers of 20’ and 40’ have been organized by overlapping and shifting them, generating an interwoven housing with public and private spaces around a central courtyard where communal spaces receive its residents. From this central courtyard, circulations are generated along the housing modules marked by channels carrying collected rainwater for its reuse. Collaborator: Anagabriel Quiroga.

This studio project was inspired by the topography of the site, its natural slopes became the organizational axis for the implantation of the buildings. Along with this, the collection of rainwater becomes the most important concept and for this Bioswales are introduced; these are channels with water and vegetation that collect and re-direct rainwater into a tank or drainage. Bioswales where designed in such a way that they would become natural barriers controlling the access to areas with different privacy levels whilst also connecting the whole project. Public space is generated through several squares with different uses related to the building closer to it. The squares follow a similar path to the Bioswales becoming the ideal way to tour the entire Institute from one square to the next. Collaborator: Elias Elkaslassy.
LAMP & CHESS SET 2012
RICE PAPER AND WIRE LAMP: This lamp was inspired by the malleability and bendable properties of wire, as well as the permeability it allows. Rice paper is introduced to manipulate the shadows projected by the lamp and to strenghten its presence. POP ART CHESS SET: Roy Lichtenstein vs. Andy Warhol, this pop art chess set is inspired by their playfulness and use of bright colors. Characteristics each artist presents on their paintings are reimagined as 3D pieces.
