Decreased the opacity so my caricature stands out

SELF CARICATURE For this exercise we were asked to produce a personal vector artwork which represented aspects of our personality. I began by jotting down keywords that I felt most related to me and my interests- such as my love for doughnuts, ice-cream, Disney and vibrant colours. I then drew a few rough sketches before creating my final image in Illustrator. I started off by creating the vector images of the doughnut and the ice cream which I then incorporated into my final caricature. With some additional research, I created an accurately shaped drop shadow for my doughnut, in order to achieve a more threedimensional looking vector. I used the pen and paint brush tools to create my character, as well as the ellipse tool for the doughnut, ice-cream top, eyes, rosy cheeks and Minnie Mouse ears. I created a dot pattern and added it into my swatches panel, which I then used to fill in the bow.

I found that the paint brush tool works well to create quick, curvy lines

LEGO LOGO For this exercise we were required to recreate the Lego logo as a vector artwork within Illustrator. Firstly, I downloaded the Lego template from the Assets folder and brought it into Illustrator (File>Place or Command+D). I locked the Lego image down as a template at an opacity of 50% for tracing. I then created a new layer for the tracing of the logo. This exercise was great practice for creating smooth lines with the pen tool. After I completed the tracing of all letters, I used the Pathfinder to subtract (Minus Front) the oval shape inside the letter O, then selected all of the letters and united them. The black and yellow outlines were created by duplicating the Lego word and increasing the stroke with the correct colour for each layer. The thickening of the stroke was a very useful tip for creating the outlines most accurately and efficiently; as opposed to retracing the logo again.

EVE LOGO For this exercise we were asked to refresh the existing Eve Organics logo.

The final logo

I started off by sketching my logo using pencil and paper. In order to retain a visual link to the original logo, I decided to keep the original font; so that the recognition of the brand was not affected. I brought the sketch into Illustrator and traced it using the pen tool. After creating the digital version of my sketch I wanted the logo to look simpler and so I deleted some leaves and stems. I also realised that the detail in the leaves was lost when I reduced my logo down in size; and so then I created more solid and simpler looking leaves. Whilst experimenting with the Eve Organics advert, it occurred to me that my logo still seemed to be missing something. I therefore added a border and used the Eyedropper tool to select a brown colour from my model- which I then later incorporated into my advert.

MODEL RETOUCH

Wrinkles and blemishes removed using Spot Healing, Filter and Mask tools

We were required to use our Photoshop skills in this exercise in order to improve the look of the model. First I used the spot healing tool to remove the cracks in the model’s lips, clear spots and blemishes and smoothen out any wrinkles. I used the burn tool to make the eyes brighter. After the small retouches, I flattened the image and turned the background layer into a Smart object and applied Camera Raw as a filter, and then adjusted the clarity to -43. As a result, the entire image was softened. In order to only soften certain parts of the image, I then clicked on the smart filter mask and filled it in black. While ensuring that the foreground colour was set to white, I then painted over parts of the image where I wanted to bring the clarity out from underneath- her forehead, nose, chin, upper lip and cheeks.

For this exercise we were required to use the knowledge of InDesign that we gained to recreate an 8 page print ready booklet.

Parodies, such as “I Seals”, have also appeared. Facetious expressions beginning “I Heart...” are based on a literal reading of the logo (e.g., the film I Heart Huckabees).

It has also been referenced in the work of other artists, such as the work of British designer Danny Flynn who embodied the idiom of English reserve and understatement in his 2005 “I don’t mind NY” design.

pressions beginning “I Heart...” are based on a literal re the logo (e.g., the film I Heart Huckabees). This exercise was useful as I learned a range of useful techniques such as text wrapping. After bringing in the supplied text and images into InDesign, I created a text wrap around the T-shirt by using the Text Wrap panel and selecting ‘Detect Edges’ from the ‘Contour Options’ Type drop down menu. The heart and club symbols were supplied as Illustrator files, which I then copied and pasted into InDesign. The symbols were pasted within the text, which caused the heart symbol to appear misaligned between the brackets ( ). To align the symbol I went into the character panel and changed the baseline shift to -2pt which centred the heart in between the brackets.

INDESIGN PROMO Sub-headings As a beginner, this InDesign exercise taught me a lot of useful tips for creating an InDesign layout. I brought in the supplied text and images into the program and then adjusted them accordingly. The image corner effects were achieved by clicking on Corner options under the Objects tab and then adjusting the corner sizes and shape. The text was brought in by clicking and dragging a text frame across the first column. Missing text was threaded by clicking on the little red box, before dragging a new text frame into the following column. Threading text frames ensures that text flows from one frame to the next efficiently and without any loss of text. I added Paragraph styles for the subheadings and body text. I found this to be one of the most helpful and useful tips. Paragraph styles made the process much quicker and smoother and allowed me to work more efficiently, since I did not have to edit the text manually each time. In order to get rid of hyphenated text, I unticked the ‘Hyphenate’ box in the character panel.

One design. Unlimited layouts. Adobe® InDesign® CS6 software completely revolutionizes the way you work with new Adaptive Design Tools that allow you to easily repurpose layouts. You can now efficiently leverage and adapt layouts for the myriad of page sizes, devices, and orientations without sacrificing pixel-perfect control over design and typography. Make way for your four new favourite design tools.

Liquid Layout

Paragraph Styles

Apply epic liquid page rules to automatically adapt content when you create an alternate layout with a different size or orientation in InDesign. Liquid Layout eliminates the need to design separate layouts, such as for Android™ and Apple tablets, which makes life a lot easier.

Content Collector tools Quickly reuse text and objects in the same document or across InDesign documents using the Content Collector tools: Content Collector, Content Conveyor, and Content Placer. Use the Content Collector to select the frame you want to grab, place it in the Content Conveyor, and then go to the location in the document (or in another document) where you want to use the item again. The Content Placer then allows you to easily place the item on the page. You can also choose to link the content when you place it. That way, if you decide to make changes to the parent content, you will be prompted to update each linked version to promote consistency.

Linked content

Language support

Help ensure that repeated content - text, images, or interactivity - remains consistent in the same document or across multiple documents. You can now link anything a frame contains, including transition times and other interactive settings. When you’ve linked content, editing the original (parent) content allows you to easily apply those changes to all the linked instances, whether in the same InDesign document or in different InDesign documents.

Use the World-Ready Composer, an alternate composition engine, to work with Hindi, Punjabi, and other Indian languages, as well as complex script languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.

Alternate Layout Easily adapt your primary InDesign layout for other orientations, page sizes, or devices. The new Create Alternate Layout command duplicates your existing pages within the same document - including text styles and relationships between objects — using a different page size or orientation that you define. If you choose to define liquid page rules when you create an alternate layout, InDesign arranges content according to those rules; otherwise, it places the content in the exact same position as in the original pages. After the new pages are created, you can manually adjust the content on the alternate layout to achieve your design goals.
