MARIA MAKRI
ARCHITECTURE & BIM PORTFOLIO
Dear reader,
My name is Maria Makri, I am an architect holding both a master’s degree in Architecture and a postgraduate degree in BIM Management.
During my student years, I found the carefully studied connection between landscape and space, in Norwegian architecture, particularly interesting. The desire to pursue this interest motivated me to move to Norway in 2016. Two rounds of Erasmus in Norway have given me a valuable introduction to Norwegian architecture and have given me insight into a different approach to architecture.
In the years I have spent in Norway, I gained both academic and professional project experience working with different climates, cultures and urban settings. In my professional career, I have been able to take on the great responsibility of the implementation of our BIM strategies and protocols, and this has also allowed me to improve my teamworking and communication skills.
On a personal note, I am self-motivated, proactive, and easily adaptable to new working environments. I am artistically curious about the combination of art in all its forms combined with the digital world and curious to learn new software platforms that will help productivity in my work.
I am currently looking for new opportunities where i can keep learning while at the same time provide the office with all the knowledge and passion I have for this profession and grow through the process in a warm and exciting atmosphere.
Kind regards,
Maria Makri

Ministry of labour and social insurance, Cyprus
Project description | Office | 6000 m2 | in progress | 1st prize in competition
The project deals with the design and construction of a new building, adjacent to a neoclassical building , to hold the function of the ministry of labour in Paphos, Cyprus. The building is distributed in 4 levels and 1 underground floor.
Software used | Revit, BIM360, Autocad, In-design, Navisworks
Role | BIM Coordinator + Architect
The project started after an initative I had to bring this project to the office. My first role was to manage the team and the tasks we followed for the completion of the competition phase. It involved continuous collaboration with the local team through BIM360, presentation and delivery of documentation.
At a later stage, my role encompassed tasks as BIM Coordinator. I was the main person in charge for completing the design and modelling up the project, collaborating closely with the project leader for the completion of the project.
In the whole process I was reading and informing the team for the regulations and made sure we complied with the project standards and regulations in Cyprus.
Some of the BIM tasks included:
A. PROJECT SET UP
- Coordinates, project browser, templates, sheets, views, levels, phases
B. ARCH
- Architecture modeling
- Schemes, schedules, area calculations
- Develop elements on rhino and connect with RhinoInside.
C. COORDINATION
- Create publishing file
- Coordinate and detect clashes between Arch. + Str. Ministry of labour and social insurance

The project was divided in two sub-projects. Our partners worked on Autocad while we developed the project on Revit. The autocad files where linked in for presenta tion purposes.

The inner courtyard is the heart of the complex, this starts the indoor/outdoor sequence. The composite idea brings the two buildings together and extends towards the North to keep them in relation to each other.
The well-known Cypriot Wall is raised around the perimeter, reflecting the tradition of continuous construction in the area.

Hotel Nuuk, Greenland
Project description | Rooms | lobby | spa | restaurant | greenhouse | 8 000 m2
The project is located at an exclusive location at Nuuk, Greenland and it desires to develop a luxury hotel with 122 rooms. It holds a program of lobby area, restaurants, expedition hall and kitchen on the ground floor, a spa and greenhouse on the underground floor.
Software used | Revit, Rhino, RhinoInside, In-design, Navisworks, Visio
Role | BIM Coordinator + Architect
This project is used as a “Pilot Project” in the office. As a BIM Coordinator in the office, I use this project as a showcase to build the standards, protocols and procedures for modelling and drafting BIM documentation, BEP and other manuals,
I initiated the project in the detail phase using Revit, after the concept development on Rhino. Together with the team we build up an information “hotel” with families to use and built up the model for further discussion with the collaborators.
Some of the BIM tasks included:
A. PROJECT SET UP
- Coordinates, project browser, templates, sheets, views, levels, phases
B. ARCHITECTURE
- Architecture modeling
- Explore different design options
- Develop elements on rhino and connect with RhinoInside.
- Create walls, floors, ceiling schemes, schedules, area calculation
C. DOCUMENTATION
- BEP (Pre-Bep)
D. STANDARDS
- Naming structure, check-lists, manual of use
Hotel Nuuk | SPACEGROUP
After the project was passed from Rhino to Revit, we found a lot of inaccuracies that had to be dealt with. For that we created a series of design options that helpd us illustrate the different solutions.
For the modelling of the facade, we came up with a reproducable modular system, to avoid errors and build a more efficient model.

Havneparken is an urban plan that has been developed by Spacegroup at Sandnes. The office is responsible for carrying out several projects in the area, one of them is the housing project of BFK2 that is now under construction.
I joined this project in detail phase. The project is distributed in 8 levels, 2 parking floors and 1 mezzanine level with a total of 88 aparments.

A. ARCHITECTURE
- Architecture modeling
- Develop specific families for the windows. We had a total of 27 different types of windows that had to be created as individual families.
- Create schemes, schedules and area calculations
B. ANALYSIS
- Produce analysis and reports of the amount of sun (per m2) that each appartment receives (Solar Analysis)

Renovation of neoclassical building in Cyprus
Project description |
The project was the rehabilitation and retrofit of an existing neoclassical building in the Mediterranean. For the BIM certifications, both Hard and Soft Skills were developed. From the Master’s degree in BIM Manager, I gained the necessary knowledge that enables me to become part of any work team that uses the BIM methodology. It gave me the opportunity to model architectural projects in all phases of the project, from a preliminary or basic project phase, to an execution or as-built project of the building. It also enabled me to manage and organize the work structure of a BIM team and coordinate all members in a collaborative environment.

(Co)herent existance | Industrial reconversion
Project description | Rooms | lobby | spa | restaurant | greenhouse | 8 000 m2
My project dealt with exemplifying the reconstruction of industrial areas and their readaption to modern needs.
I developed this project at Kabelgata, Økern to hold multiple uses that promote a sustainable framework, such as, housing + locally grown food + circular economy + working and living in the same area. For that the exisitng building was used with an addition of a greenhouse on the top and a timber building to hold more technologically demanding uses.
Software used | Revit, Rhino
Role | Architect (Student)
Conceptual development | The project was thoroughly developed conceptually to manifest different aspects of the modern way of life, that have been left out of residential and urban developments nowadays.
Further development | To complete the project according to Spanish standards, I developed construction details, structural analysis, sun and shadow analysis, plan for the mechanical, electrical and plumping installations and planing for water management.

URBAN RENEWAL
This project will form an example that could be extrapolated in a series of interventions to restore urban life to a system formed by an industrial network.
At the same time, it is intended on the one hand to respect the current urban development paradigm, proposing buildings for residential and recreational purposes, and on the other to question whether production can once again become an integral and natural part of the urban functions that surround us on a daily basis.
