Competition «O2B» : Bridging Gaps

Project Brief:

«O2B» or «out of the box» competition was held by Zizinia, a real estate company based in Cairo, along with jury from the government aiming to find creative solutions for challenges faced by our country and how to implement them.

Problem Definition:

Cairo happens to face an increase in human numbers, increase in the need of public activity, and deficiency in public space. This statistic has developed an ill use of outdoor amenities and creating several dead spaces.

A major misused amenity that runs across the heart of the city is the 6th of October Bridge. As it crosses the Nile and major city nodes, people tend to create informal gatherings at its strategic points such as the Nile crossing terrace and the dead space on the city grounds beneath the bridge, causing informal parking spaces and kiosk settlements.

Final Boards

Role:

Participated as a Team Leader with a team of four Architects to deliver and study the project from initiation to delivery.

Problem Solving:

Through this running strip in the city, we propose two treatments of the informal and dead space created by the bridge:

First, the parts where the bridge crosses the Nile, a suspended space will be attached to the sides of the bridge accommodating the Nile’s scenery and setting for an enjoyable public outdoors.

Second, the parts where the bridge runs above the city’s roads and nodes, a decent setting, sheltered by greenery and making use of provided shade will enhance the street experience for pedestrians and elevate the city’s image.

This proposal will provide the Egyptian community with an initiation of introducing the concept of public places, sustaining the city’s amenities, along with the pedestrian presence in the city and accommodating their needs.
