INTRODUCTION Our A&E studio analyzed the current urban issues in two adjacent boroughs in South-central Manchester. As the name sugests, we looked at accident and emergency, and anything and everything that connects the community to the area, to develop solutions to their needs and establish the foundations for a resilient community. Just like the majority of the people in these areas, we’re all migrants. Silk roads had caravanserais to bring merchants and migrants together, so does this project.

We are the A&E group. The current situation in the world has forced us to work remotely during the times of pandemic. Three of us based in Manchester and three of us in different parts of the world. This has been our biggest challenge: trying to put ideas together from the distance and getting to know the context of our project through the eyes and ears of those of us who were able to visit the site.

BACKGROUND In the South-central area of Manchester there are the disctricts of Hulme and Moss Side. Both have similar origins and contemporary issues, yet they are different. They have come together in the past through partnerships and we aim to bring them together again and 11 collaborate as a whole network of support and positive change.

This project was inspired by a Moss Side GP who noticed that many of his patients were visiting him because they were hungry. Throughout Hulme and Moss Side there have been identified three vacant lots that could be used as activity centres serving families in the area. This project is conceived and co-ordinated by the Workhouse Project. The main objective is to provide a space where residents can meet, share and learn skills through group-based activities. Seeking to build a more cohesive, innovative and resilient community.

S STRIP

It is expected to be developed in different stages. On first instance as a ‘meanwhile’ project, and on later stages, expand into a permanent development and replication in other areas with similar needs.

Used as a facility to lodge travellers and merchants in many different countries along the Silk Roads, the charm of these places lies in their capability to bring people from different contexts together. Many organizations and community projects fight against homelessness and unbearable living conditions. They help people in need, not just survive, but reintegrate into society and have the same opportunities to a normal everyday life experience. Offering shelter, food or work opportunities, or education into skills that will help them get a job. Their aim is to get these people’s stories known and eliminate the phenomenon of homelessness.

PROJECT DEFINITION Based on the learnings obtained from the previous stage we put together a series of proposals that take place in the three designated sites, and later expand to other areas. The strategies range from architectural, to urban, to social and conform a whole plan that would 41 be developed through different stages along a ten-year period..

There are three areas in the community kitchen, which are: the dining, the kitchen and the market. The community garden on this site provides fresh ingredients grown there. In the meantime, the extra vegetables and fruits produced by the garden will be sold at a lower price, formig a small ‘market’. They can also be donated and stored in the food bank.

These activities allow residents who live in surrounding areas to gather in the community park, which will create a vibrant natural environment. “When I am working on a problem, I never think about beauty... but when I have finished, if the solution is not beautiful, I know it is wrong” Richard Buckminster Fuller

CONCLUSION Throughout this course we were able to get to know and understand the dynamics in the area. We could identify the strong values and desire for change that these people have. That’s why we believe that the best tool for them to overcome their collective needs is: resilience.

There are also numerous community groups and charities which reflect a strong community feeling that should be spread to everyone.

PROJECT OUTCOMES

In these times of living in the middle of a pandemic, these two elements are key in recovering and working to build a better place to live.

The result of this design process is a masterplan and an action plan. We were able to learn from the needs of this community as well as their opportunities for growth. This same document aims to serve as a tool for community members, public and private initiative to be envolved and work on an vibrant and self-sufficient 67 community.

The story begins from our room, where we communicate and spend most of our time.

These are models we made and which illustrate our feelings and thoughts about this current situation, using materials we had on our homes as we were in lockdown.

Each one of us comes from a different background. Here you can see how all of our things are different although we are arriving in the same place.
