The three-sport standout also helped lead Marian to its lone IHSA Regional Men’s Basketball Championship in school history. After a successful college career at Western Illinois University, Harrison was drafted by the San Diego Chargers, where he was selected to two Pro Bowls and earned multiple Charger Defensive Player of the Year honors. After signing as a free agent in New England in 2003, he has helped lead the Patriots to back-to-back Super Bowl championships.
More Athletic Exploits Tony Bartolomei ’76, Jim Pinkard ’77 and Tom West ’75 have qualified to represent the United States at the Drug Free Powerlifting World Championships in Finland this November. Bartolomei qualified in the 242-pound weight class, Pinkard at 220 and West at 181, and all three are state, national and world record holders in the bench press event. Theresa Coughlin ’02 continues to break records and collect honors for the Marquette University women’s volleyball team. She has been named to the Big East Honor Roll on three occasions this season and recently tied her career high for kills with 29 in a match against Syracuse.

Rodney Harrison ’91
As part of a full weekend of excitement, Marian Catholic plans to retire the number and jersey of former Spartan and current two-time Super Bowl champion with the New England Patriots, Rodney Harrison ’91. Harrison’s banner will join NFL retirees Mike Prior ’81 and John Holecek ’90 in the rafters of the West Gym as part of the March 24-25 “Legends” basketball weekend at Marian. Just prior to the Legends men’s basketball All-Star game on Saturday, Marian will retire Harrison’s jersey at approximately 1 p.m. “Marian Catholic has strongly supported my career,” said Harrison, who has founded youth football and cheerleading programs in the Chicago area. The programs, like his alma mater Marian, “give kids an opportunity to participate in a competitive arena, where discipline, sportsmanship and respect are the standards.” The weekend will include a women’s All-Star game on Friday night (Legends vs. current high school seniors) and men’s All-Star game on Saturday, as well as several exhibition contests involving area youth teams.

GENEROSITY EXTENDS TO HURRICANE VICTIMS
Student Council officers Christian Haas ’07 and Ashley Reed ’07 collect water from students and faculty for the Gulf States Hurricane Relief Fund.
The Marian Catholic community has been involved in a variety of projects to help provide relief for hurricane victims. • Marian has accepted five evacuated students from the New Orleans area, from various Catholic and public schools. Some students are also being assisted with tuition relief from the
Sr. Simeon Emergency Tuition Fund. • Students and faculty spent a day of lunch periods collecting funds and bottles of water (15,000). With cooperation from Sodexho and Pepsi, water and funds were sent to hurricane victims in the Gulf States. • The Student Council and parents reached out to area businesses to solicit help in sending Marian Gulf States students to the Homecoming Dance. • Marian sent $3,000 in donations to the National Catholic Education Association’s "Child to Child" campaign to support school rebuilding efforts, requesting a special focus on Dominican Schools that have been impacted. • Service Club students helped prepare and serve meals for evacuees currently living at the former Mental Health Center facility in Tinley Park and collected items needed for South Suburban PADS to assist victims.

“The future for Marian that I see is building on our successes. We really do have ‘Scholars with a Soul.’ What I think the world needs even more is; ‘Leaders with a Soul.’ We need more than just brains in the work place, we need people to see the big picture and then be able to lead others in the process. The Sisters and staff are working to improve all aspects of Marian. With Sr. Paul and Sr. Kathleen Anne, improving what we have is an automatic response. Marian will become the destination high school of the Chicagoland area. The future will be here before you know it.”
EMIG HELPS SORT OUT TOUGH ISSUES Church and State. Business and Ethics. Students throughout the nation continue to learn each day, but messages often send mixed signals and lead to confusion. In Marian's "Teaching Scholars with a Soul" environment, the messages lead to critical thinking and positive decision-making. Marian theology teacher Mary Emig had the opportunity to explore many of those issues when Lisa Kowynia ’87, Mary Ann Golden and Mary Emig enjoy she attended the first Acton themseves at the 2005 faculty and staff Christmas party. Symposium in June at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. “The experience was fantastic to be with teaching, business and government people from all over the world and educators from various parts of the United States,” Emig explained. “We discussed a lot of matters relating to God’s justice within the free market.” The symposium delved into many facets of faith and education, but Catholic high school teachers addressed the conflicting messages students receive about the value of the market and the dignity of the business education. Emig and Marian Catholic were invited as members of the Catholic High School Honor Roll. “The topics covered on the free market were intellectually stimulating,” Emig raved. “The knowledge gained definitely enriches my presentation on the effects of globalization and how the United States should deal with economic problems in a just way.”
MC FACULTY GARNERS ACCOLADES Many Marian faculty have been busy in recent months sharing knowledge and collecting accolades. Marian Band Director Greg Bimm, who recently directed the Marian Marching Band to its 26th consecutive state championship, served as a clinician at the Bands of America Summer Symposium in June. More than 1,500 students and directors from throughout the nation attended. Bimm was also a summer consultant for numerous programs from Nevada to Georgia throughout the summer. In this capacity, he helped in program development, wrote marching band programs and arranged music. Social Studies teacher Bob Rodey was extremely busy over the summer, beginning by traveling to San Antonio to grade AP essays for the College Board. In early July, he was part of a Gilder Lehrman Institute in
American History at New York University, where participants discussed "The Civil War in a Global Context." While in New York, Rodey was involved with "The Silk Road," a Korean Society Summer Institute. Finally, the favorite of many, Marian students visited Washington, D.C. as part of "The History of the Capitol," a NEH Landmark Summer Institute. English teacher Lisa Kowynia ’87 visited Salem State College in Massachusetts, where she attended the workshop "Becoming American: Trade, Culture and Reform in Salem, Massachusetts, 18011861." The five-day program funded by the National Endowment for the Humanities as part of its Landmarks of History programs included 39 clock hours of instruction on the history and culture of the early nineteenth century.

Base sisters: Achievement in retrospect From left to right, Michelle, Laura, Diane and Christine
Marian Matters knows that from 1982 through 1995, the Base sisters were making their mark academically at Marian Catholic. We also know that each of the talented foursome advanced to earn degrees from the University of Illinois. Diane (Class of 1986) began the brilliant family academic tradition as salutatorian. She was followed by sisters Laura (valedictorian, 1988), Michelle (salutatorian, 1993) and Christine (valedictorian, 1995). Not surprisingly, the daughters of Anthony and Barbara Base have moved onto successful adult lives with career and family. Here’s an update on one of Marian’s most talented families.

Diane (Base) Beck ’86 now lives in Orland Park with husband Jim and sons Christopher 9 and Alex 7. After earning her degree in Electrical Engineering, she worked at Panduit in Tinley Park as an electrical engineer for 11 years before devoting all of her time to her sons. “I think the secret to my success at Marian was that I just enjoyed learning,” Diane explained. “My motivation was the desire to do well and get good grades. Our parents were always encouraging and supportive of me and my sisters. My greatest accomplishment has been doing my best to raise my children well.” Laura (Base) Mertdogan ’88 earned her bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, then a master’s degree in Environmental Science before working for seven years as a water treatment engineer at Culligan International in Northbrook. When daughter Madeline was born in 2002, Laura decided to stay home in Orland Hills with husband Edvin and their new addition. “I was fortunate because I learned to study hard, but to know when my limit was reached and when further studying wouldn't help anymore. My parents were always very supportive of me in all areas. My greatest accomplishment is to be a good mom to my daughter.” Michelle (Base) Berry ’93 followed up her Biology degree with a doctorate of veterinary medicine in 2001 and currently serves as a small animal veterinarian at a practice in Homer Glen. “I learned from my parents and sisters to do the best that I could and that I could do anything if I put my mind to it,” Michelle explained. “The secret of my success is that I never stop learning new things. Every day I learn something, whether it's about animal problems, or how people handle difficult situations, or even about myself. I've realized that when something is a challenge, that's when you learn the most. “Marian taught me to work hard and to value the people in my life, especially my husband Brian, my family, and my friends.”

I think the secret to my success is that I worked hard without getting completely immersed in schoolwork. My motivation was that I liked to learn as much as I could about something.” Only John ’03 and Elizabeth ’05 Berger of Homewood who each earned valedictorian honors come even close to this “Base Achievement”. 4

Youth will be served! It certainly was this fall with the Marian Catholic women's golf team. Featuring a combination of three outstanding sophomores and brilliant upperclassman leadership highlighted by seniors Lindsey Haines and Jill Nicholas, Marian made its first trip to the state tournament a special one. Withstanding a five-hour drive and the pressure of an initial state tourney visit, the Spartans scored 657 over 36 holes to bring home the school's seventh IHSA state trophy and the third Second Place state finish in school history. Led by sophomore Samantha Sloan's 11th place overall finish (155 two-day total), Marian placed itself in second place after Friday's round at Stone Creek Golf Course in Makanda, IL, then held off all challengers to eventually tie Lyons Township for the runnerup spot in the state. Marian also saw Haines and sophomore Meg Gilley tie for 41st in the state at 165. Mixing strong efforts on different days at state, the Spartans earned the state hardware
with strong contributing efforts from sophomore Ann Vrdolyak, junior Lauren Pascarella and seniors Jill Nicholas and Shayne Cleary. “The women’s golf team’s success this fall season has been no accident,” Coach Linda Gilley said. “This group of girls set their sights high and worked very hard to achieve their goals. The girls prepared themselves well, taking lessons, playing in many summer tournaments and making the most of their fall team practices. In addition, the four invitationals added to our schedule this year were a tremendous help in getting them ready for the end of the season tournaments. “We played more difficult courses during this season, such as Medinah, Coyote Run, Flossmoor Country Club, Lincolnshire Country Club and George Dunne National. These venues were valuable in giving our team the confidence needed to compete under pressure-packed sectional and state situations. Our girls did not feel overwhelmed making their first appearance at state. They had gradually gained confidence throughout the season and believed that they not only

“This has been a mature group of girls who have been on a mission,” Gilley praised. “They have not only worked hard over the past couple of years, but have truly enjoyed playing together. Their team spirit, led by the senior co-captains, Lindsey Haines and Jill Nicholas, has flourished, culminating in a team attitude of ‘business first, but don’t forget to have fun along the way.’ The girls and I have been supported throughout the season by wonderful parents who have encouraged and helped us with each step. As coach, I have been truly blessed to be able to work with this group of young ladies and their families.” The men's golf squad brought great news this fall as well. Along with winning the East Suburban Catholic Conference tournament and the Bremen Regional, the Spartans sent Luke Marthaler and Mike Vanover on to state competition. Marthaler finished 27th in the state and Vanover 57th. In women's tennis, doubles team Kaitlin Jones and Nicole Padula made the grade as state qualifiers. Great accomplishment was also evident in the women’s swimming program, where Katie Moore (100-yard butterfly), Beth Nagel (100 freestyle) made the grade as state qualifiers. The same duo also combined with Anna Moorman and Meghan Von Schaumburg to qualify for state in the 400 freestyle. In team sports, the men's soccer team turned in a brilliant fall in the extremely tough ESCC. Against former state champions, the Spartans defeated St. Joseph and fell to power Benet Academy in overtime to finish the ESCC with an impressive 6-3 mark.

As happens with most reunions, people chat and catch up on what has been happening in their lives since they left Marian. Sometimes, people who didn’t really know each other all that well in high school connect at their reunion. Take for instance Kevin Keane ’84 and Erin Brady ’84, who recently became engaged after attending their 20th reunion in October 2004. At a reunion function held at the Fifth Quarter in Homewood, Kevin was doing the “guy thing” and checking out the women who were in attendance. Although he and Erin didn’t click immediately, a closer friendship ensued after the reunion and eventually they began dating. After nine months of dating, Kevin picked his “perfect spot” to pop the question. In front of the Blessed Virgin Mary Grotto at Notre Dame (his other alma mater). Under a full moon and lit by hundreds of candles, he dropped to one knee and proposed to Erin. She, of course, said “yes”, and the wedding is planned for March 18, 2006. Both Erin and Kevin strongly encourage singles to attend their reunions. Marian Catholic also encourages everyone to attend their reunion. You never know what may happen.

Shannon Reidy ’90
More than 17,000 students are Scholars with a Soul having benefited from learning at Marian Catholic. More than 90 percent of students each year honor that educational background by volunteering for service at Marian. Then, some go well beyond that call. Led by Alumnus of the Year Alex Panio, Jr. ’62, the Alumni Association Hall of Fame inductees for 2006 have all made significant contributions back to their communities. In most cases, the Class of 2006 has given talents and efforts back directly to private school education and Marian Catholic High School. Through teaching, coaching, medicine, directing and as benefactors, the Class of 2006 Hall of Famers have given a new definition of service to others through generosity and profession. Alumnus of the Year Alex Panio, Jr., Ph.D. ’62 recognized in his formative years as Class President at Marian Catholic, his ability to lead. Beginning his career at Northwestern University Medical School and Memorial Hospital in Psychiatry, Panio realized his professional dream in 1982. Panio founded and serves as President of the Adolescent and Family Institute of Colorado, Inc. The institute is a unique, intensive treatment hospital specializing in the care of adolescents and their family systems. More than 1,600 families have been recipients of the hospital’s care. “Marian Catholic was the start of a journey,” Panio explained. “I have not stopped my journey. I love to travel, to learn, to share and to teach, and to enjoy the arts and new experiences with my family. I founded the treatment center that is one of the finest in the country due to the loyalty and skill of my staff.” Panio has found success in his exploits by “getting a great view, getting close to the edge and most importantly, having a partner (wife Mary Kruse Panio, BSN) to live with, work with and love. I do not give up!” The Chicago Heights native has served as an advisor/consultant to former President Carter’s Mental Health Commission and has presented major formal professional lectures and publications throughout the United States, Europe, Africa, South America and Cuba. He has appeared on several national media presentations
and participated in a documentary that awarded the United Press International Best Documentary Award in 1975. Panio has received training and his education background from Tulane, Roosevelt, DePaul, Northwestern Medical School, California Western and has received post-graduate training at The Family Institute of Chicago. In 2004, he was awarded the Distinguished Alumnus Award from the Family Institute of Northwestern University. For Panio, much of his charisma was honed while at Marian Catholic. “The ‘premier class’ was full of energy, talent, spirit and we cared for each other,” Panio recalled. “Every day was exciting. Something new was there for us to master. As Class President, meeting with staff and officers set the tempo for problem solving and success.” A huge favorite of Marian students in the Fine Arts Department and well beyond, Bernie Jablonski will be honored with the Fine Arts Distinguished Achievement Award. On staff for 24 years at Marian, Jablonski has directed dozens of plays at the school, coordinated the Stage Techs and has been a key contributor for Marian musicals, concerts and special events in the Fine Arts Department. Through nearly a quarter-century, “Mister J” has instilled skill and confidence in Marian students in the public speaking and performance arenas. “I’ve had tons of people who had faith in me and supported me,” Jablonski said of his Marian experience. “I’ve always had friends here and always had an audience to play to. People at Marian made me want to explore what was beyond and always made me want to come back.” “Marian has been life-spanning and lifeopening,” said the graduate of Weber High School and St. Louis University. “I’ve always been able to rely on Marian Catholic for warmth, support, knowledge and wisdom.” Thousands of Marian students have also been able to rely on Jablonski in many ways. He continues to be integral to the learning process for current students, but also remains a great friend and resource for so many Marian graduates. “Bernie has been an important part of our Marian Fine Arts family for such a long time,” Band Director and Fine Arts Department Chair
Greg Bimm said. “During his time here, he has given freely of his time, talent, caring personality and, of course, his wonderful sense of humor. He has been a true gift to the students and staff alike. He has been a great colleague and a true friend. I am so happy to see him honored by the Hall of Fame.” Before “rambling” off this past spring to accept the position of head women’s basketball coach at Loyola University, Athlete of the Year Shannon Reidy ’90 offered her talents to Marian in two different ways. As a student-athlete, Reidy was a multiplesport athlete for the Spartans, which paved her way to a college career at Lake Forest College after becoming one of the all-time women’s basketball leading scorers at Marian. She also helped lead the Spartans to their first women’s basketball IHSA Sweet 16 in 1988. The next time Marian reached the Sweet 16? When, as head coach, Reidy guided the squad to the Elite Eight in 2002. This time, the Spartans advanced all the way to the state championship contest before earning the school’s second Second Place trophy. Marian made three straight visits to the Elite Eight, adding a Fourth Place trophy in 2004. “When Marian Catholic ‘stole’ alumna Shannon Reidy from the business world, who would know the impact this passionate professional woman would have on women’s sports here?” Marian President Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67 said. “Shannon’s imprint is deep and solid, a lasting legacy of excellence, enthusiasm and hard work.” A three-time Illinois Basketball Coaches Association District Coach of the Year, Reidy led the women’s basketball program to a 160-54 mark in seven campaigns at her alma mater. With Reidy coaching, the Spartans had five 20-win seasons, won five regional titles, three sectional titles and made three visits to the IHSA Elite Eight. "The Marian community and my players have made me a better coach every day and they will forever be in my heart, Reidy said. The Hardest part about leaving Marian is leaving the current players who have become so important in my life. But like others who have left Marian, I hope to remain close to them all."

Norman Bates
Sr. Margaret Rose Aultz, O.P.
A familiar face to anyone associated with the 7-Time Grand National Champion Marian Band, Spirit of Marian honoree Norman Bates’ generosity has stretched well beyond the walls of band hall. After sending five children and two grandchildren through Marian, working as a heavy equipment operator for the Thornton Quarry, Bates is retired and enjoying himself. He certainly deserves it after so many years of assisting others. At Marian, Bates has spent 30 years helping the Band in a variety of roles. "What an experience to be associated with thousands of students over the years with (Band Director) Greg Bimm showing them the respect and appreciation of working with and organizing the field crew," Bates said. "I just enjoy fixing instruments and anything else I was able to do for the band. I tried to show hard work and dedication to do my part of whatever was asked of me – worker, father, parent." The annual Marian Band Parent Award is also now named the "Norman Bates Award." Bates' dedication and service has stretched well beyond Marian Catholic. When he's not serving St. John Parish in Glenwood as a Eucharistic Minister, Minister of Care or aide at the nursing home, Bates is probably helping the community with the local Lions Club. He has been named "Lion of the Year" and has received the International President's Certificate of Appreciation. One of his proudest accomplishments is likely when Bates presented a wreath dedicated to the Marian Catholic High School Band at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial Wall at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Bates is a survivor of the attack of 1941. "Norman Bates is deserving based on many years observing his ability to relate to students and adults, and working with him on many projects," according to former Brookwood School District 167 Superintendent Stephen A. Racz. "I've always admired his positive attitude, winning personality and willingness to help."
The Lifetime Achievement Award honoree will tell you that Marian "energized her" and provided "a love for life that was contagious." The care, concern and love Marian students received from Sr. Margaret Rose Aultz, O.P. was certainly contagious for students. An elementary school teacher early in her career, Sr. Margaret Rose moved to high school in 1963 and Marian was blessed to have her on its faculty from 1966 to 1977 and again from 1997 to 2001. During her MCHS tenures, Sr. Margaret Rose (“Sr. Hola,” as she’s affectionately known!) worked as a religion and foreign language teacher, served as Prioress of the Marian Sisters, moderated several student clubs, tutored in several subjects and designed, developed and directed Marian's "Discovery in Service" program, one that remains very popular with students and the community today. "I was convinced that teaching at Marian would be a challenging, wholesome venture for me," Sr. Margaret Rose explained. "Strengthened by the Holy Spirit and supported by the staff, my 15 years of life at Marian were enriching, transformative and very happy. Our dedicated staff, including our knowledgeable sisterteachers, dedicated priests and lay staff, supportive parents, generous benefactors and spirited students – they are sowers of the seeds, the word of God, which has fallen on good soil since 1958.” Sr. Margaret Rose has also taught at Rosary and Sacred Heart High Schools, and currently serves as minister to retired Sisters in Springfield. "I miss the golden opportunity of teaching and sharing God's word in the midst of such a faithfilled community," said Sr. Margaret Rose, who still sneaks in an occasional Spanish tutoring session when needed. "The Marian Catholic experience is so enriching and fills me with hope for the future!" Marian Catholic also misses the golden opportunity of having Sr. Margaret Rose on staff.
