Principal Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P.
As the faith and academic leader of Marian Catholic High School, Sister Kathleen Anne Tait, O.P., has fully embraced a tradition of education that is authentically Catholic and uniquely Dominican. Sister’s commitment to Marian Catholic began in the classroom where she taught math from 1984 through 1987. She would return to the halls of Marian Catholic after serving as principal at Sacred Heart Griffin in Springfield from 1987 to 1994, and later as the high school consultant for the Archdiocese of Chicago from 1994 through 2003. Each of these leadership roles provided valuable experiences for Sister that would serve her well as principal of Marian Catholic High School from 2003 to the present.
Athletic Director Coach Dave Mattio ’66 describes the tenure of Sister Kathleen Anne as “leadership through transition and innovation.” Whatever the challenge or change that surfaced within the school setting, Sister consistently took the school community to the next level through innovative initiatives. Mattio noted that, “Mandatory drug testing, advocacy for anti-racism, the implementation of Understanding by Design, and the transfer of learning from the traditional book format to education through the use of iPads were all steps introduced to Marian Catholic through the efforts of Sister Kathleen Anne.” Innovation in education depends upon quality resources and programs in support of learning initiatives. Making information literacy a priority for the students, Sister Kathleen Anne has supported advances in all areas of school improvement. She has consistently provided professional development opportunities that form a solid foundation upon which teachers create new delivery systems for learning. “The series of workshops provided for our staff in preparation for incorporating iPad technology into the curriculum has been exciting,” commented President Sister Judine Hilbing, O.P., “Most recently, the small-group learning platform, led by our own staff members, truly formed us into a community of learners.” Sister Kathleen Anne understands the importance of weaving art into the fabric of daily living. As one who loves theatre, music, and aesthetics in her own life, Sister has tremendous appreciation for the talents of students as exhibited on stage, in the band room, and through visual representation. Reflecting on her faithful attendance at performances and her support of the fine arts programs, Director of Bands Greg Bimm notes “Sister Kathleen Anne has been a true blessing to the fine arts program at Marian. Her understanding of the importance of the arts in education and her support of all the arts has been unwavering.” Sister Kathleen Anne is passionate about the priority of confronting institutional racism. In 2008, Sister initiated the Marian Catholic anti-racism team which is now identified as BREAD (Believing in Racial Equality and Diversity). Susan Przybylo, a member of the team, is proud to note, “The team is committed to working together to create a school community that fully embraces the richness of the diversity of our student body.” In 2010,

MARIAN CATHOLIC RETIRES DENNIS KELLY’S JERSEY #67 After three retired jerseys on the defensive side of the ball, it was time to represent the offense. Joining a prestigious group of former Marian Catholic standouts, the Philadelphia Eagles’ Dennis Kelly ’08 became the fourth former Spartan to have his jersey retired on Friday, January 31, prior to the Marian ESCC basketball contest against Marist. The 2008 Marian graduate, who played at Purdue University prior to being drafted by the Eagles in the fifth round of the 2012 NFL draft, will be a permanent honoree in Marian’s West Gym Complex. Along with a banner in the gym, Kelly now has a jersey and photo display in the gym lobby. As is tradition, his NFL #67 was retired, the number he currently

ENDOWMENT GOLF CLASSIC ENDURES FOR SCHOLARS
Twenty-five years ago, three men took it upon themselves to organize a golf outing to help raise funds for Marian Catholic High School. Greg Underwood, Joe Coatar, and Tom Lydon proposed the event with one purpose – to create an endowment for the school that would provide scholarships for students down the road. “We were hoping to be able to put a vehicle in place to help a few students,” said Greg Underwood, who has remained with the event for its entire 25 years. “If it was successful, which we were not even sure of, maybe it could continue to grow and help a few more students. It hasn’t done too bad,” he laughed. That success has shown through the more than 400 students who have received a scholarship from the Endowment Classic Scholarship fund who have proven their deep commitment to do their best in the classrooms, on the fields and courts, on stage, and in the studios, as Marian Catholic Scholars with a Soul! Last year, the endowment posted nearly $2.9 million, the largest scholarship in the school’s portfolio of individual and group endowments. Over the years, event participation has grown. Initially, the EGC was held at one golf course but with an increased attendance the event was hosted at two local golf courses simultaneously. Beginning last year it was hosted at Olympia Fields Country Club and will be again this year for its 25th anniversary event on Monday, September 8, 2014. “I never would have imagined this in the beginning. I remain involved because I have chosen to make Marian my charity of choice. Education is a top priority of mine and my wife’s. Marian has given my two kids a superior education and I can’t say enough about the faculty at Marian,” Underwood said. “I am most proud of what we have grown the Endowment Fund to become. I hope we can continue to help as many students as possible,” he added. Greg remains the co-chair with Mark Peifer ’81, who joined the team in 1999 and has been co-chair for the past 10 years. “The help that is being distributed through the fund is far beyond the original goal,” Peifer said. “If you would have told the original chairs that we would have helped more than 400 kids 25 years down the road, even they wouldn’t have believed it.”
For this year’s event, reservations will be taken on a first come, first served basis. The EGC Committee has worked to keep the event cost at Olympia Fields an exceptional value at $295 per golfer, the same rate as past years, and will include 18-holes of championship golf on the course of choice, lunch, course refreshments, dinner, open bar, and golfer participation gifts. Because of generous offers from two committee members who want to be sure the outing stays affordable for our young alumni, they will gift the cost difference for the first 30 Young Alums who reserve at the special rate of $195. This is the same rate as offered in past years to alumni 10 years or less out of Marian. Golfer and guests are welcome and encouraged to make early reservations. For more information, contact Pat Trebe, Director of Annual Programs, at (708) 756-9405 or ptrebe@marianchs.com.

Profile of PHILANTHROPY Joe D’Amico ’67
By Marcia Borucki Neville
In fact, D’Amico says the reason he became an accountant and got his CPA was because of the bookkeeping class he took in high school. “I loved it. I would spend hours making sure everything balanced and my worksheets were neat and proper. If not for that class, I’m not sure what subject I would have majored in while in college, and who knows where I would have ended up and what I would be doing today,” he said. D’Amico also credits MCHS with helping him develop his core values, “Honesty, integrity, caring for others, a strong work ethic, and high moral values were all a part of the Marian educational experience.” MCHS also shaped his philanthropic bent, which he would go on to exercise as a board member for various organizations in Arizona, including the Phoenix Art Museum. A resident of Homer Glen, IL and Scottsdale, AZ, D’Amico is a supporter of St. Mary’s Food Bank Alliance, the world’s first food bank.
Even if you “grew up giving,” as Joe D’Amico ’67 did, the gift of a $100,000 endowed scholarship is no small present. But when the scholarship is a surprise to honor your mother on the occasion of her 90th birthday, the magnitude of the gift grows. Joe’s mother didn’t want or need anything for her June 29, 2013, milestone birthday, D’Amico says, and when she told his sons one of her greatest regrets was not finishing high school, they came up with the idea of the scholarship in her name. “They thought this was a way to give my mom the opportunity to give back,” says D’Amico of his two sons, Peter and Joe. “It gave us the chance to sort of pay it forward and to make a difference in other peoples’ lives, and for my mom to know while she’s here that she is making a difference for kids and for others.” The scholarship, officially established by D’Amico, his wife Kathy, his sons and daughter Gina, and his brother, Marian alumnus Mike D’Amico ’75, also serves as a memorial to his late father. A Mass and brunch in recognition of the gift were held at Marian on September 19, which D’Amico attended with his family. At the celebration, his mother got to meet the first recipient of the Guido J. and Tina M. D’Amico Scholarship, freshman Raven Brzeskiewicz. “My mother was thrilled to be able to give this scholarship. It was something she never contemplated,” D’Amico says. “We had breakfast with this delightful young lady and her father, and really enjoyed it. It came home to my mother when she saw and understood their appreciation and what it meant to Raven to go to Marian. Being able to help her family was a real gift to my mother.” D’Amico, who is a senior consultant and recently retired president of the Apollo Education Group, Inc., the company that owns the University of Phoenix, among other schools, grew up in Chicago Heights and attended St. Agnes School. “We were not a well-to-do family,” D’Amico notes. His father worked at a factory, Wyman-Gordon in Harvey, making crankshafts. His mother made spaghetti that was sold in packages. “We didn’t have any extra money at all, but my mother always did for others: cooking and giving. She is a very caring person.” Although his family was not well-off, his parents insisted on a Marian Catholic High School education for their two sons. “Like a lot of people, I was the first one in my family to go to college,” says D’Amico, who received a bachelor’s degree in accountancy from the University of Illinois and a MBA from the University of Chicago. “A key for us in attending Marian was that it seemed that everyone who graduated went on to college.” The importance of continuing his education was driven home to him from a young age: “I went to see my dad at work and I didn’t recognize him because he was so dirty. He said, this is why you have to go to college. You don’t want to work like me. So it was important to go to college, and Marian really prepared me for that. The school provided me with encouragement, discipline, and confidence, and ensured I had the training to be a success in college and in my life. I feel blessed to have the educational experience that I did.”
“HAVING THIS SCHOLARSHIP MEANS EVERYTHING TO ME. IT HAS OPENED SO MANY DOORS FOR ME AND HAS ALLOWED ME TO DO SO MUCH AT MARIAN. I’M VERY THANKFUL FOR THIS OPPORTUNITY.” - FRESHMAN RAVEN BRZESZKIEWICZ In addition to his family life, D’Amico counts his faith and his Marian education with reinforcing his philosophy of giving. “Growing up as a practicing Catholic,” he says, “you grow up with certain influences, and you are around people who are very giving kinds of folks. And I have been very blessed in my life. I have done more things than I ever imagined I would or could. And I believe it is very important to give back and share, to try to make a difference in other people’s lives.” For that reason, he says, he is extremely proud of his sons for thinking of creating the endowment, and overwhelmed that the family can help others to attend Marian. “The culture and faculty at Marian Catholic are so important to the success of our kids,“ he says. “The school gives you so much more of a chance to be successful. There are a lot of distractions in the world, especially today with social media and other pressures. Marian creates a discipline that is important, and an environment that keeps you on the straight and narrow that makes you think and makes you question the direction that you are heading.”

Marian Fund ANNUAL PHONATHON 2014 The 2014 Marian Catholic Phonathon raised more than $46,000 in pledges for the Marian Fund, with more “decisions” being received each day and confidence in reaching our goal of $60,000. The hallmark Phonathon is like no other fundraiser. Over six sessions, volunteers reached out to 12,000 members of the Marian Catholic community throughout the United States. With each pledge, bells rang and fun filled the library. Chaired by current parents Paul ’75 and Mary Henry, Walter and Connie Lolli, and Chuck and Cherie Taylor, who cheered on both the student and parent volunteers, the parent Phonathon reached current and alumni parents. Students called our alumni. Those individuals we were unable to reach, and those not available when our phonathoners called, still have an opportunity to participate. Your gift is fully tax deductible, can be paid over twelve months, or charged to your credit card. Online pledges/ gifts are also an option: www.marianchs.com. Thank you for your continued generosity and commitment to excellence, helping to enable Marian Catholic High School to continue to teach Scholars with a Soul. PLEASE NOTE The intentions of those who asked for prayers during the Phonathon will be remembered at Mass on Wednesday, April 9, in the Student Chapel at 2:30 p.m. All Phonathon committee and callers are invited and encouraged to participate at this Phonathon Mass celebrated by our Chaplain, Father Bill O’Mara.

TYLER ULIS
NAMED MCDONALD’S ALL-AMERICAN
The list of staggering accomplishments and honors for senior men’s basketball player senior Tyler Ulis is a long one. Shy of a team IHSA state championship, earning status as a McDonald’s All-American player ranks at the top of the list. The University of Kentucky-bound point guard learned in late January that he will be the first Marian Catholic player in history to compete in the McDonald’s AllAmerican game on Wednesday, April 2, at Chicago’s United Center. Ulis is one of only 63 from Illinois to earn the honor since the recognition began in 1978. “It’s the biggest honor I’ve received because this is something I’ve always wanted to be,” Ulis said of the McDonald’s recognition. “Last year, I didn’t think this was something I’d get, so to hear my name called was very special.” On the radar for many top Division I programs from the day he made his first varsity start at Thanksgiving of his freshman year, Ulis announced his commitment to Kentucky at a Marian football game last fall. Once Ulis reached his junior campaign at Marian, prior records began to fall. Unselfish in his style of play, the reigning
East Suburban Catholic Conference MVP has blown away school records for points scored and assists. In a recent victory over Marist, Ulis eclipsed the 2,000-point barrier. His nearest competition is Cedrick Middleton ’03 with 1,444 points. Marian Catholic hadn’t won a Rich South Big Dipper in the tournament’s first 39 years. However, Ulis has led the Spartans to back-to-back crowns with title-game decisions over rival Bloom Township and Thornton High School. During his tenure, Ulis has made two all-tournament teams and earned two MVPs, the first player in 41 years to be honored in all four seasons. Much of Marian’s recent and historical success in men’s basketball has mirrored the career of Ulis, as one of his greatest contributions is making each player around him better. “It’s great to be the first in Marian history to earn this honor and always be known as the first,” Ulis said. “This is also great for all of my teammates and I hope there will be a couple more to come through Marian.” Along with two McDipper titles, Marian won its first Chicago Heights Classic 5

Tournament this year behind the leadership of Ulis. In his junior campaign, Marian set all-time marks for most wins (29) and best season start (20-2). The Spartans also reached their first IHSA Elite Eight in school history by toppling rival Bloom for the first men’s Sectional crown. Chicago Heights McDonald’s recently hosted Ulis and his teammates for a team dinner in honor of the McDonald’s AllAmerican recognition. The Big Macs and McNuggets were a treat, but nothing like the entertainment Marian Catholic fans have been treated to on the hardcourt during the Tyler Ulis era.

Alexis midair in performance.
Marian Catholic, junior Alexis Diaz-Albertini, was always extremely active and talented in several different sports as a child. Alexis had a knack for all sports, whether it was basketball, softball, or volleyball, it all came easy to her and she loved participating. But it was at a young age that Alexis found her true pleasure. It was the ballet classes at the Frankfort Park District at the age of three that really caught the interest of Alexis. Ballet has been a part of her daily life for the past fourteen years as she continues to strive for success through her performances. Having taken classes at the Joffrey Academy of Dance in Chicago, Alexis looks to further her talents as she hopes to one day make a career from her abilities. At the age of thirteen, she was first introduced to the Joffrey Ballet by Jon Sloven, Alexis’ coach at American Dance Center in Orland Park. “I always thought it would be really interesting to be a part of the Joffrey Ballet,” stated Alexis. Her numerous hours of practice and hard work certainly paid off. Alexis’ talents have allowed her to perform on some big stages over the past few years and included the 2012 Discover Orange Bowl in Miami, FL, along with a performance for Dance Excellence at Disneyland in California. Like any other sport or activity, Alexis’ days entail a large amount of hard work and dedication. Along with keeping her grades at a high level, Alexis manages to juggle both her homework and her practice schedule on a daily basis. Traveling into the city after a long day at Marian Catholic can be a daunting task, but she manages to get it all in her day. Alexis also attends American Dance Center in Orland Park to make sure proper practice is maintained. Alexis teaches twice a week at the local park districts. Alexis has not decided where she will attend college as of yet, but she has made it clear what her plans are. “Yeah, I’d love to perform big someday. My goal is to make a profession of this. It’s what I love to do,” states DiazAlbertini. The Joffrey Ballet and Alexis have a number of upcoming shows to view.

MCHS FINE ARTS FOUR BAND MEMBERS RECEIVE ALL-STATE
Honors
Marian Catholic Marching Band at New York City Macy’s Day Parade.
Chris Trlak ’14, Ellen Chmura ’14, Nicole Szewczyk ’15, & Geronimo Melendez ’14.
Congratulations to four students from Marian Catholic High School who have been named to the Illinois Music Educators Association All-State Honors Band and Honors Orchestra. Seniors Ellen Chmura, Geronimo Melendez, and Chris Trlak, along with junior Nicole Szewczyk joined the top players from the state of Illinois to perform with collegiate and professional conductors from around the country. Each student auditioned and was placed in the highest ensemble of eligibility. This process began in October when students from the area auditioned for a spot in the Illinois District 1 Band and Orchestra. The Marian Catholic representatives competed with hundreds of other students from schools over the entire state of Illinois. Local schools included, Lincoln-Way, Sandburg, Marist, and Lockport. After performing a concert at Lincoln-Way East, the students patiently waited for a committee from all nine Illinois districts to gather and evaluate the highest scores and quotas for each district. Marian Catholic belongs to District 1, which has one of the largest numbers of schools in attendance. Because of the large number of schools, in District 1 only the absolute highest scores are considered. The concerts were held at the Peoria Civic Center at the end of January as the closing events of the 2014 Illinois Music Educators Conference.
SPEECH TEAM
Represents Marian Catholic at State Competition The Marian Catholic Speech team competed on February 22, 2014, at the Peoria Civic Center with a list of nearly 40 different schools across the state of Illinois to try and claim the crown of State Champion. After triumphing as champions at both their Regional and Sectional sites, the Spartans had their eyes set on the State Championship. Marian was well represented, advancing students from nine of the 15 different categories. Many team members performed very well in every one of the events. “I’m very proud of the entire team and the accomplishments they achieved throughout the year,” said Marian Speech Director, Mark Donaway. “Regional and Sectional Championships are great honors, they [Marian Speech members] have a lot to be proud of.” Of the nine MCHS representatives, senior Cooper Packard claimed a state title in Special Occasion Speaking. “After finishing second last year, I had my sights set on only one thing and that was being a state champion,” said Packard. “The amount of attention and greetings I received was greatly appreciated, I didn’t really expect that.” Cooper received multiple first place votes in the preliminary rounds before saving his best act for the finals and receiving the honor of State Champion. Other notable accomplishments included junior Emerson Pavur and senior Regina Hoyles as they placed sixth in Dramatic Duet Acting. 7
Band Performs
in NYC for Macy’s Parade
The Marian Catholic High School Marching Band performed at the 2013 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, in New York City this past November. The band was selected out of more than 150 applicants nationwide for one of 11 marching band slots in the annual parade. With the parade seen by more than 50 million television viewers and more than 3.5 million spectators annually, the students rose to the occasion by demonstrating flexibility and vigilance, performing at an incredibly high level in uncertain circumstances. This was one of the highest accomplishments for this prolific band. The Marian Catholic Marching Band, which consists of 225 students, participated in a number of activities while in New York City. When they weren’t performing, band members had the opportunity to do some sightseeing. Within their six day adventure, Marian students toured the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, The Lincoln Center, and attended a Broadway show. “This is an exciting time. There is a different kind of energy when you are getting ready for a performance at this level,” said Greg Bimm, Band Director at Marian Catholic. “It’s one more very special experience for our students. The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is one of the two greatest parades in the United States, making this an experience that cannot be replicated anywhere else.” Patrick Smith ’15

MEN’S BASKETBALL
A Season to Remember
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM Captures Fifth State Trophy (3 Place) rd
The Lady Spartans knew they were entering the season with a target on the back of their jerseys. Defending a State Championship is no easy task and the Lady Spartans flirted with the possibility of doing just that in the 2013 – 2014 season. That dream didn’t come true. However, Marian finished with an IHSA third place trophy along with an East Suburban Catholic Conference title was certainly a magnificent team accomplishment. The third place trophy now gives Marian five pieces of IHSA hardware since 2002. The Spartans finished with an astonishing record of 28 – 5 after defeating Geneva 45 – 34 in the third place game in Normal. The girls were led by senior Ashton Millender, who capped off an amazing four-year career at Marian Catholic. Ashton was named to multiple tournament teams, East Suburban Player of the Year, and Player of the Year for both the Northwest Indiana Times and Southtown Star. “As a senior I was out there enjoying my last moments of playing basketball in high school,” Millender said. Junior guard Teniya Paige also was awarded All Area selections for both the Northwest Indiana Times and the Southtown Star. “It feels really good; the girls deserve a lot of credit and they worked extremely hard all season long to get themselves down here this year. They should be awfully proud of their accomplishments,” said Coach Dan Murray. A team consisting of seven seniors, the Lady Spartans will have their work cut out for them as they look to bounce back next season and continue their recent success.

In 54 years of men’s basketball at Marian Catholic, the record of this senior class is unparalleled. It may take another half-century to find another group this special. When a downstate dream was spoiled on March 18, with a 65-60 overtime loss to Edwardsville at the Illinois State University IHSA 4A Supersectional, it ended an era of Marian men’s basketball that will be long remembered. Featuring a senior starting five that will surely all make their marks in college, the group was a special one on and off the court. While winning 57 games in the last two seasons, Marian’s 10 seniors were also mentors and idols to many fellow students, faculty, and staff. “What this group accomplished on the basketball court was staggering, but I also don’t think it’s one anybody will forget soon in so many respects,” Coach Mike Taylor explained. “The friendship bonds were some of the best I’ve ever seen and it made what we tried to accomplish on the basketball court a very easy task. “We got compliments about our demeanor and class wherever we traveled (to games in five different states this year) and so many people in school and community adopted this group as one it wanted to follow and see succeed. Leadership was an easy request with these seniors, and I can only see several more bright moments in their future endeavors,” Taylor added. The accomplishments on the court speak for themselves. The 57-7 record the last two seasons represents 19 more victories than any other two-year span in history. The trophy case for the last two seasons will show two Big Dipper championships, two IHSA Regional and Sectional crowns, and a Chicago Heights Classic title. The two IHSA Elite Eight appearances are the only two in Marian history. The group is highlighted by Kentuckybound Tyler Ulis, whose 2,335 career points are most in history by a margin of 891 points. The first McDonald’s All-American at Marian also holds the career mark for assists with 578 and his 83 percent free-throw percentage ranks among the best ever. In more than 40 years, Ulis was the first player to make four Big Dipper all-tourney teams with Tyler Ulis ’14 dribbles two MVPs. around defenders. Guard Ki-Jana Crawford will take his talents to play football at St. Xavier University, while Terrone Parham, a transfer in his junior season, will move on to play
JOEY CIFELLI WINS STATE DIVING TITLE The hard work and dedication has certainly paid off for Joey Cifelli ’15. After placing 2nd at last year’s IHSA Diving Championships, he was determined to top his performance from a year ago. Joey did just that at the 2014 Diving Championship held at Evanston high School. Cifelli finished with 474.05 points beating his opponents by more than 30 points! “I took a lot of time this year working on the small stuff, I had a lot more confidence in myself,” said Cifelli. What makes this honor so special is that Joey is the only Marian representative, when it comes to men’s swimming and diving at Marian Catholic. Training at numerous locations, as far as the UIC campus, really prepared Joey for fantastic season. Joey hopes he can continue his success at the next level. Many colleges and universities have begun noticing his abilities, as his college opportunities begin to broaden. But all will have to wait another year as he continues to work hard and tries to defend his state title next year.

MARIAN CATHOLIC RETIRES DENNIS KELLY’S JERSEY #67 Continued from Cover wears for the Eagles. Kelly joins previously retired jersey honorees Michael Prior ’81 (Tampa Bay, Indianapolis, Green Bay), John Holecek ’90 (Buffalo, Atlanta, San Diego), and Rodney Harrison ’91 (San Diego, New England). The 6’8”, 321-pounder is a regular returnee to Marian Catholic, and in particular the Bob Bergstrom Weight Room. A two-year tackle in Philadelphia, Kelly earned his first start on October 28, 2012, against the Atlanta Falcons and made 10 total starts in his rookie campaign. “It was a perfect night to honor Dennis Kelly with the retirement of his #67 Philadelphia Eagles jersey,” according to Athletic Director and former Football Coach Dave Mattio ’66. “Dennis Kelly represents everything that is good about high school athletics and the path to success at each of the next levels.

basketball at Army. An academic standout, Josh Cohn may continue his basketball career pending his college decision for a strong academic institution. The heart of the Spartans who was born with no left hand, John Oliver, will continue his basketball career as a student-athlete at St. John’s University in Minnesota. The senior class is rounded out by Hayes Bynum, Brandon Clark, Nick Damiani, Xavier Parker, and Ezra Pointer-Jones. The Class of 2014 will evoke great memories for years to come. “For two years we were undersized, but accomplished great things through camaraderie, desire, leadership, and defensive intensity,” said Taylor, who improved his career mark at Marian to 178-143. “Tyler Ulis was certainly a one-of-a-kind special and very unselfish as well, but this group as a whole accomplished incredible things in a basketball-rich region and against an extremely competitive schedule.” After a junior campaign produced a 29-4 season and the first-ever sectional title, Marian beefed up its schedule to national caliber and followed up with a 28-3 year with losses only to California power Etiwanda and two qualifiers for the IHSA Class 4A Final Four. The Spartans also went 8-0 (behind two-year ESCC MVP Ulis) in conference play for their first ESCC crown since 2000-01 and the first unbeaten conference record in school history. The net results in 2013-14 were the highest scoring Marian team in history and the best single-season winning percentage in 54 years. On two occasions, Edwardsville shattered the dreams of these Spartans at ISU’s Redbird Arena. Yet, they will remain in the hearts of so many Spartan faithful for years to come.

WRESTLING SENDS 3 TO STATE Marian Catholic wrestling program was well represented at the IHSA tournament in late February. The Spartans had three wrestlers compete individually in their respective weight class. Senior Jake Domke (138), freshman Josh Jones (113), and sophomore Jose Champagne (152) represented Marian Catholic with great dignity. Champagne, compiling a 27-0 record in the regular season had the honor of placing 4th in the 152 pound class. Jake Domke ’14, Josh Jones ’17, and Jose Champagne ’16.

“He was never willing to shortcut the process. He always had a ‘great motor’ and learned to be very direct in his work level to success. He established goals and worked hard to achieve them,” Mattio said. As a three-year starter at Purdue University where the offensive line helped produce a school-record five consecutive 200 plus rushing games in 2010, Kelly was a senior co-captain and twice named most valuable player on offense. He also garnered Academic All-Big Ten honors on two occasions and was twice an All-Big Ten honorable mention choice. The son of Chicago Heights residents Mike and Geri Kelly, Dennis was a three-year starter at tight end at Marian Catholic. The team captain as a senior earned All-Area and All-East Suburban Catholic Conference honors. He was also a three-year member of the varsity basketball squad. “The evening was highlighted by the large family gathering that took part in the activity,” Mattio said. “Dennis was supported by great parents, siblings, and extended family members who were available during his process. All are to be commended.” Dennis’ brother, Tim, played football at Eastern Illinois University and recently moved with Bill O’Brien from the Penn State football coaching staff to an assistant coach position with the NFL’s Houston Texans.

If one had to describe 2005 Marian Catholic graduate Lauren Catinella ’05 in a few words, determined and successful would be appropriate. Lauren, this year’s recipient of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade Queen, has had her mind set on this accomplishment since her childhood. For the past ten years, Lauren has registered in the St. Patrick’s Day contest, but unfortunately, did not reach her goal of becoming queen. Well, things transformed on January 19th, 2014, as Lauren was crowned queen of this prestigious event. Though she wasn’t chosen as queen in previous years, her success and rich Irish tradition was not forgotten by the judges. Lauren was one of four other girls nominated to be a part of the St. Patrick’s Day court in the previous two years before being crowned queen at this year’s event. Catinella states, “Being in the court the last two years was spectacular, there’s nothing like the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the City of Chicago. It was wonderful.” Having her grandfather always encourage her to take part in this tradition; Lauren, along with her sister, Nicole (Catinella) Mulcrone ’96, gave it a shot. This year’s contestants ranged from a group of over 100 woman. After meeting judges and partaking in a few interviews, Lauren earned herself a spot as one of the final five contestants. Sure enough, through her determination, Lauren was crowned queen in 2014. After graduating from Marian Catholic in 2005, Lauren went on to receive her degree from Illinois State University in three years. She is currently a certified paramedic and taking classes to receive her nursing degree from St. Xavier University. Lauren also assisted in coaching cheerleading at Marian Catholic after graduating from Illinois State University. Success and determination sure seem to be a fitting description for this wonderful achievement. Lauren will be busy in the next few months. With her significant honor, Lauren will contribute her time to numerous St. Patrick’s Day events such as Corned Beef and Cabbage Dinners, Dyeing of the Chicago River, numerous fundraisers, and much more. Weekly proceedings will take place until March 15, which is the date of this year’s parade. The St. Patrick’s Day Parade will begin on the corner of Columbus and Balbo at noon.

Keelan Wright ’13 is currently enrolled at Northern Illinois University, where he was awarded Freshman of the Year honors. Keelan recently received the Martin Luther King award given by the Center for Black Studies. To go along with these wonderful awards, Keelan is also a Huskie Scholar, in which he has serviced over 250 hours of his time.

SAILING
AROUND THE WORLD
While growing up in the Chicago Heights neighborhood, traveling the world was never really a thought for Marian Catholic graduate Maria (Leo) Siguaw ’67. After graduating from Marian Catholic, Maria went on to college where she met her husband Steve and earned her nursing degree. After retirement from her career as a nurse, Maria and her husband decided to take their 38’ sailboat for a quick sail around the world. The Siguaws’ took up sailing early in their marriage and after years of owning a smaller boat they finally acquired what would be their home for months at a time, “Aspen”. Maria and Steve began their voyage in November of 2009 when they set sail from St. Thomas and headed towards the Panama Canal. The couple made stops all over the world as they traveled for nearly four years. Some top destinations included: The Society Islands, Niue (Near Tonga), Australia, India, and Thailand. Being so important to Maria and Steve, their family conveyed them back to the states on several different occasions as they docked “Aspen” in numerous spots across the world. “I have a love for geography and thought this was an amazing opportunity. The South Pacific was absolutely gorgeous,” said Maria. After traveling past the Galapagos Islands, Maria and Steve sailed into the beautiful blue waters of the Pacific Ocean. “We didn’t see land for over 23 days,” Maria said. Their travels took them to Australia and the South Pacific islands of Tahiti and Bora Bora. They soon set sail once again and headed north through Southeast Asia making stops in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, and India. Here they joined other sailors on a Blue Water Rally, which was prepared through a company for locals sailing. The Indian Ocean is often known for the threat of pirates and the Siguaws didn’t not want to take any chances. Maria says, “It was without a doubt a hard, scary 11 days while on the Indian Ocean.” “Often times it was very rough at sea, but an overall wonderful experience,” states Maria. “But at the same time, I’m glad to be home.” The Siguaws’ now spend most of their time on the Aspen near the Caribbean. When not on their boat, Maria and Steve spend most of their days in their home outside of Denver. Being so accustomed to traveling, it is often they visit family and friends in the Chicagoland area as well.

Sue Silander
Elected as School Rep for RAILS
Mrs. Sue Silander has been a part of the Marian Catholic community for the past 35 years, serving as the school’s Head Librarian. As Department Chairperson of the library department, Sue has shared her knowledge of numerous resources with not only the students at Marian Catholic, but the faculty and staff as well. Sue often invites students, and even entire classes at a time, into the library to present new ways of academic research and library studies. As part of Sue’s relentless effort to assist students, she has recently been elected as Marian Catholic’s representative for RAILS (Reaching Across Illinois Library System) Member Advisory Group in Illinois. This library system that Sue now joins is one of two multi type regional library systems in the state. RAILS services a vast majority of both Northern and Western Illinois representing 3,700 library facilities. “I really wanted the library system to stay relevant,” states Silander. Representing over 500 schools, Sue knows she will have her hands full in her duties. After serving on the advisory group early in her career, Sue felt the urge to get involved again. Sue says, “It was about time to give back to the profession I love.” She will serve a two year term as Marian Catholic’s representative with R AILS Member Advisory Group.

NEW ONLINE eDIRECTORY The Marian Catholic Alumni Association is launching a free, private e-directory for our alumni and friends. The directory will list and categorize services and products offered by alumni to help connect individuals who have a need with those who have the ability to help. It is simply a way to encourage our alumni to use and support each other.
Our new eDirectory has three sections: listing – Browse for job openings and create a profile with your work history. If your company is looking to hire, create a listing to inform other alumni. • Non-professional listing – Alumni can offer their services and products. There is a category for members to volunteer their skills and abilities as well as to list immediate needs. There is also a place to list items you have to donate, lend, or sell. • Professional listing – Instead of turning to another referral source, find a trusted professional from our group. Create a business profile which includes your name, contact information, headshot or logo, web address, and a brief bio.

Marian Catholic High School is a Catholic, coeducational, college preparatory high school within the Dominican tradition of study, prayer, community, and preaching.
