Class of 2006 valedictorian Anna Selling prepares to lead the graduation procession.

CLASS OF 2006 FILLED WITH ACCOMPLISHMENT It wasn't quite the "Fab 400," but the Marian Catholic 2006 graduating class of 398 certainly was a resounding “fabulous” when it came to accomplishment. Whether the arts, athletics, service or academic scholarship, the Marian Class of 2006 proved it possesses a recipe for success in future endeavors. As the Class of 2006 walked across the stage at the First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre on May 21, it represented a group of Scholars with a Soul who earned nearly $10 million in college scholarships. From National Merit to AP Scholars to National Honor Society members, the newest members of the Marian Catholic Alumni Association made

the most of their college prep days at Marian. Indeed, it was a day that deserved celebration – a tribute to all those who touched the graduates. "I find it most appropriate today as I look out at you, the Class of 2006, because you're surrounded by your families, friends and teachers," Principal Sr. Kathleen Anne Tait said. "You're nestled in there, if you will, by all those who brought you to this day. "You see, today's graduation marks the culmination of four years of effort and study, successes and opportunities for growth. But the culmination today had roots in your birth...the love of your parents Continued on page 3

FAGAN ’82 MENDS BROKEN HEARTS

Dr. Thomas Fagan ’82

Broken hearts can be mended. Dr. Thomas Fagan ’82 has proven it. A pediatric cardiologist at the University of Iowa College of Medicine, Fagan was the primary advisor and interventionalist in the heart surgery of a five-year old Iraqi boy born with an extremely rare heart condition. Facilitated through an Iowa family with a son serving the military in Iraq, Rebaz Shamsadeen accompanied his father, Subhi, to Iowa in early 2005 to seek advice and a solution for the condition that had led to the death of another son in the family. The eventual successful surgery should allow Rebaz to lead a normal life; however, it did not come without hours of care, study and teamwork from several people like Fagan. “The nice thing about the current state of medicine–for the most part–there’s usually a way to treat most conditions,” explained Fagan, who assumed a new position at Children’s Hospital in Denver on July 1. “Technology is advancing at such a rapid rate. I had a late relative who used to have a similar job, and they would often have to just diagnose situations like this and send patients home.” Continued on page 5

POPULARITY BOOMING FOR LACROSSE PROGRAMS

Coach Mike McCormick (left) huddles with the varsity men’s lacrosse team.

The land on the west end of campus that Marian Catholic cultivated in the last few years certainly has gone to good use. On many spring afternoons, one could camp out on the refurbished Spartan Stadium press box and view as many as eight to 10 practices or competitions. One major reason for all of the spring athletic activity is the explosion in lacrosse interest. With the women’s program completing its first full campaign, the men just finished their third season, as the roster size has swelled near 75. “It’s the fastest growing high school sport in the country,” according to Marian lacrosse founder and men’s coach Mike McCormick. “You don’t need to be big to compete. Players come in all shapes and sizes. They just need to be athletic, tough, and willing to give their all. There are plenty of young men who fit that bill at Marian.” Marian’s men didn’t just compete in 2006. The young Spartan program jumped to a 9-0 season start and eventually earned the top seed in the Lacrosse Cup playoffs. Marian (10-4) eventually dropped a playoff decision to Lake Zurich, but with three levels and so many participants, the season was clearly a success. “Although myself and the team were disappointed with the loss, coaches, parents and players alike were all pleased with what has been accomplished thus far,” McCormick assessed. “Even more exciting is that everyone associated with the program is looking forward to the future. “The players all fell in love with the game. Another reason for the sport taking off at Marian is the camaraderie of the players and support they give each other. Because it is new to them and the school, they are all committed to making lacrosse an important part of Marian Catholic’s athletic program. Because of that commitment, the sport has grown from a novelty to a viable program in a short period of time. “Lacrosse would not be possible at Marian without the parents. Since it is a club, it is self-funded. Most parents were unfamiliar with the game until recently. Purchasing equipment and paying dues isn’t cheap, but parents stepped up because their sons showed such interest. Without funds for refs, busses, uniforms and equipment, the program would have never gotten off the ground.” While younger than the men’s program, the women’s squad also continues to grow in popularity and had more than 50 participants for two teams this year. The other interesting aspect of lacrosse is that it mixes players with experience along with those who are completely new to the sport.

Melissa Gergel ’07 admires her name on the marquis before winning second place at state.

Put all of those factors together and you find Marian Catholic at the forefront of the South Suburbs’ most exciting emerging sports. In women’s track, three straight state titles for Casey Taylor ’05 was a tough act to follow. While Taylor’s talents moved on to the University of Michigan for a track scholarship, junior Melissa Gergel proved to follow in the footsteps very well. A ninth-place finisher in the Class AA pole vault as a sophomore, Gergel qualified for the 2006 state meet and her effort of 12 feet, 6 inches was good for second place in the state. Meanwhile, junior Jenn Borowczak was a state qualifier in one of Taylor’s event, the long jump. The women’s track team also captured its second straight East Suburban Catholic Conference championship. Men’s track saw a trio of state qualifiers, including another pole vault standout. Sophomore Mitchell Erickson was 19th in the state in the pole vault and junior Adam Brzeszkiewicz was 32nd in the state in the 800meter run. Senior John Walter, who qualified for state in cross country as a junior, captured 21st place this spring in the mile run. The senior, junior, sophomore act was also duplicated in men’s tennis, where state qualifiers included sophomore Tim Stanis and the doubles team of Cameron Ruiz (junior) and Luke Coughlan (senior).

FORENSICS: 16 TO NATIONALS The spring also brought great news in the fine arts arena, as the Marian Forensics team qualified 16 performers for the Catholic Forensics Grand Nationals in Chicago. Marian was the lone school from Illinois to advance students to the finals round, as Craig Dettmann ’07 and Alex Stoterau ’07 captured 13th in the nation in Duo Interpretation and Michael Whittaker ’07 was 25th in the nation in Extemporaneous Speaking. “This was an extraordinary record,” moderator Tom Sweeney said of his group, which also completed a second straight perfect season in the Chicago Catholic Forensics League. “This brings great fame to the Chicago Catholic League, as well as to Marian Catholic. It’s great news in a very competitive national field.”

~ Graduation 2006 ~ and families who brought you into being and nurtured you along the way. "Throughout your life and certainly throughout these last four years, a whole community of people helped you discover yourself...helped you find the person God wants you to be." The graduating seniors discovered more than themselves. They discovered incredible accomplishment, whether it was a record 103 AP scholars, being part of a group of 55 Illinois State Scholars or the nucleus of a current 200 National Honor Society members at Marian. This group also continued the traditions that have become expected of Scholars with a Soul–the teamwork of four more successful Calendar Drives, the generosity of four more successful Mission Drives, and the tradition of more than 90 percent voluntary participation in service. "Seniors, this is the big day: the culmination of four years of hard work and tremendous dedication to all that we have been involved in these past four years," Senior Class President Joe DiMaggio recalled. "While it feels like so long ago that we entered Marian as freshmen, I don't know where all that time went. I suppose it flew by while we were in class, at practice, at competitions, at meetings, on Kairos, and spending time with our friends. "Now that these four years are coming to a close today, I want you all to remember that the best parts of high school will continue on; not the research papers and the novels to read, but the memories and time with our friends. I hope you remember all of the good times when you look back at your high school career, and I hope you remember all of the good times when things may not be going your way.

Continued from front page

"The memories have taken four years to build, so they won't be easy to forget." There were many unforgettable moments for the fabulous class. Fine arts students will remember national band finishes and unprecedented state and national success in forensics. Athletes will remember state trophies in women's golf and women's basketball, as well as a school record for victories in men's basketball. Whether or not all goals were achieved, this group learned from all the great experiences. "While at Marian, we learned countless facts from dates in history to math equations," Valedictorian Anna Selling said. "Many of these facts will be forgotten, but amidst the tests and quizzes, we learned about ourselves. We developed talents and discovered new passions. "I know that my fellow classmates will continue on to do great things and make pivotal changes in our world. Wherever we go in life and even after achieving great success, we will always be the Class of 2006 at Marian Catholic. God has great things in store for each of us. Go boldly into the future, follow your dreams, never give up, and reach for the stars.” While May 21 represented a celebration of four outstanding years, it also represented a springboard toward becoming our nation's leaders in the future. "Being an ethical, loving, bright, generous person of service–being a Scholar with a Soul– is the work of a lifetime," according to President Sr. M. Paul McCaughey, O.P. ’67. "May God's grace flow always through you as you turn, turn, turn...and a time for every purpose under heaven (the Byrds)." For an Alumni Association that now numbers more than 15,500, we likely haven't seen or heard the last turn of the good news for the Marian Catholic Class of 2006.

ALUMNI SPEAKERS HELP MAKE CAREER DAY BIG SUCCESS

Pat Panio ’65 addresses students during Career Day 2006.

Melissa Fedora ’01 discusses Journalism during Career Day in May.

On Monday, May 8, 2006 dozens of Alumni and friends came to Marian for the annual Career Day for Freshmen and Sophomores. Doctors, lawyers, psychologists, teachers, nurses, journalists, event planners–the A to Z of the professional world and the armed forces–volunteered their time and talent to speak with our students. After an initial “meet and greet” and a light lunch, our speakers were guided to their respective classrooms for three twenty minute presentations. The students moved from profession to profession thereby enabling them to hear about three careers of interest to

them. Marian faculty members, who also served as hosts for each room, provided feedback via surveys for each session. A big “thank you” goes out to Mr. Unavitch and the Guidance team for their hard work, scheduling nearly 800 students into their career selections. You could be a presenter next year. Career Day is set for Monday, May 7, 2007. Mark your calendar now, and send an email gyoung@marianchs.com. You will be contacted this fall. Just think – you could help guide a young person into the career of a lifetime.

FAGAN ’82 MENDS BROKEN HEARTS Even with great technology advances in the 21st century, the decision for surgery on Rebaz was a very tedious one for Fagan and his team. Specifically, Rebaz had a heart condition called Truncus Arteriosis, or a hole in one of the arteries that leave the heart. To compensate, many of the arteries around the heart were hardening because of additional strain. The condition should have been treated at birth, but technology and finances in Iraq did not allow such. The surgery would come with some great risks, and Fagan’s cardiac catheterization testing and findings served as the primary criteria on which the team of doctors made a final decision. “The hospital came up with a funding system to get him here,” Fagan explained. “We were really taking a big chance that we would get him here and not be able to do anything. Despite the higher risk, we decided to perform the surgery.” Despite a language barrier, emotional ups and downs and at times unlikely percentages, the two-month stay in Iowa and eventual four-hour surgery proved very worthwhile for Rebaz and his family. “Though we’ve had very limited contact, the last word was that he was doing very well,” Fagan confirmed. In a new millennium that hasn’t provided a constant of world peace, it’s refreshing to see the altruistic work of Fagan and so many others in Iowa.

Continued from front page

Army Ranger and Medic Corey Johnston initiated the family contact, his mother Cindy Yerington hosted the Shamsadeen’s in Iowa, 63 Iowa Rotary Clubs helped fund the trip and University of Iowa doctors waived their medical fees. While the worldwide impact of Fagan and his team is monumental, the former Spartan took things right in stride. “My having to deal with the family and a difficult situation all seemed to relate back to my family background,” Fagan explained. “My Marian Catholic education has really been a big key in preparing me for so many situations that arise. Marian provided me the ability to deal with so many situations to be helpful to others.” Tom Fagan and his wife, Rose, have seven children, so sports and school occupy most of his hobby time. With the pressures and emotions involved in his career, Fagan probably doesn’t get the time for himself that he deserves. However, he appreciates every minute of what he does. “With technology today, you can count on some very good outcomes that lead to a real normal lifestyle for patients,” Fagan explained. “There are days that are very difficult, but the next day you see a situation that years ago we wouldn’t have been able to treat. “It’s easy to keep going because you’re helping so many people, and that makes it worthwhile.” 5

FRATERRIGO ’91 ANOTHER MARIAN AUTHOR

Author Melissa Fraterrigo ’91 chats with fellow Marian alum Michael Duffy ’02 at a recent book signing.

Among the talented Marian Alumni in the literary world is Melissa Fraterrigo ’91 who has recently had her first book published, “The Longest Pregnancy.” The collection of short stories is published by Livingston Press as the winner of the first annual Tartt First Fiction Award in April this year. Fraterrigo’s collection features mostly female protagonists dealing with everyday sorrows, but with a twist. For instance, in “The Strongest Woman in the World,” a woman with superhuman strength tries to have a normal life and stumbles her way through a blind date. Other characters in the fourteen stories are bold, humorous, grotesque and painfully human. While many of the stories are wildly fantastic, readers will also be riveted by the human complexities and hope that run throughout “The Longest Pregnancy.” On her Marian experience, she states, “Mr. Martin was 6

one of the few high school English teachers I had who incorporated creative writing with the requisite study of literature and grammar. I found it thrilling that his classes demonstrated the interconnectedness between all of these aspects of writing." Fraterrigo has served as assistant professor of English at Southern Utah University and writer-in-residence at Penn State-Altoona. After graduating from Marian, she received a B.A. from the University of Iowa and an MFA from Bowling Green State University. Among her awards are the Charles B. Wood Award for Distinguished Writing from The Carolina Quarterly in 2001, and the 2000 Sam Adams/Zoetrope: All-Story Short Fiction Contest, which took her to study at Francis Ford Coppola’s famed Blancaneaux Lodge in Belize. For more information about the book, visit www.melissafraterrigo.com.

FACULTY EXCELS, CONTRIBUTES BEYOND CLASSROOM

Science teacher Jen Clifford ’88 is planning a Garden Cooperative for the Dominican Greenhouse.

While more than 115 members of the Marian Catholic faculty and staff work to turn out Scholars with a Soul each school year, the faculty itself continues to devote work and hours toward service and its own professional development. Following are a handful of examples: Social Studies Department Chair Scott Bodnar serves as a reader for AP World

History for the College Board and his AP students participated in a test development project through the College Board. Bodnar also serves as moderator for the Psychology Club, which raised $800 for thank you gifts for guest speakers, a $200 donation to Muscular Dystrophy support groups and $500 returned to psychology honor students in the form of psychology books and a monetary scholarship to eight students. Science teacher Jennifer Clifford ’88 is planning a Garden Cooperative, a project that will make seasonal growth use of the Dominican Greenhouse in the Science Courtyard, as well as developing a raised–bed courtyard garden that will serve as a living and breathing classroom for subjects across the entire curriculum. In January, choir teacher Michelle Coduti served on a panel and spoke on an advisory panel at the Indiana Music Educators Association State Convention in Indianapolis. This summer, Coduti will participate in the Genesius Guild’s production of Children of Eden by performing the part of Yonah. Genesius Guild is located in Hammond, IN and the show dates are July 21-23, 28-30. A Chicago Tribune writer by trade before

moving to Marian as a guidance counselor, Karen Olson is back in print after the publishing of her first book: Frommer’s Croatia. The Frommer’s series is one of the most respected among travel guides. Olson takes readers inside the thriving cities of Zagreb, Dubrovnik and Split, with their spectacular Roman ruins, medieval old towns and nearby storybook castles. From the Turkish bazaar–like feel of Split’s Pazarin market to the lowdown on Zagreb’s see-andbe-seen café culture, Frommer’s Croatia showcases the best of a country that has long been labeled Europe’s “best kept secret.” Experiences for science teacher Linda Savick expand well beyond campus. In addition to taking 24 anatomy students to Northern Illinois University for a full day cadaver lab and lab practical, she is spending this summer taking students to Poland for International Snowball. Science Department Chair Vince Zerante ’70 recently was named a Class Nobel Educator of Distinction, an honor established by the Nobel Prize Family from the National Society of High School Scholars. Zerante was noted as a “role model and positive influence, someone who has made a difference–in short, a great teacher.”

JOHN BERGER ’03 HUGE INFLUENCE AT NOTRE DAME PRE-SCHOOL

John Berger ’03 attends Notre Dame University and is majoring in Accounting. Last year, John began volunteering at Notre Dame’s preschool on Friday afternoons. The children were then 3-4 year olds. This year, he was able to move up with them, so now they are 4-5 year olds. The children have really enjoyed having John around. A while ago, one mother came up to John and said, “I had to meet you,

John, because my daughter says so many nice things about you. The other day, she told me that a good day at preschool is when they serve chicken nuggets for lunch, but a great day is when they have chicken nuggets for lunch and ‘Mr. John’ is there too!” This year, John was inducted into two prestigious academic honor societies: Beta Alpha Psi and Beta Gamma Sigma. He just completed

7

his second year as a Teaching Assistant to Professor Change in the business school. Finally, John was hired this summer in the Chicago office of Deloitte Touche, an international accounting and consulting firm. This summer internship was listed as one of "America's Top Ten Internships" by the widely known consulting firm, Vault, Inc.

She leaves behind not only her husband, but 2 children, Jack 8, and Reily Kathleen 7, as well as her parents, sister, Lorelle "Scottie" Pride-Day ’84 and numerous family and friends.”

Marian Catholic High School was misinformed…information published in the Spring 2006 Marian Matters that Nancy Mauro ’71 was deceased was incorrect. We are very pleased to say that Nancy is alive and well and apologize to Nancy for the error!

“I always considered Leslie to be one of the greatest gifts God ever chose to bestow upon me. I first met her as a sophomore at Marian, and since then she was my best friend for 21 years. It is hard to deal with the fact that she is physically not here with us anymore, though I realize that she wakes up with me every morning, for she is in everyone's heart who loved her.”

Marian mourns the loss of Sister Marie Vianney Trutter, O.P. On April 27, 2006 she was called Home. Sister Marie Vianney was a religion teacher at Marian during the 70's. She will be remembered for her goodness, service and love in the Marian Community.
