1.0 THREE tectonics

Point/ Line/ Plane

The three tectonics; point/line/plane, mass, and frame and infill were the concepts that we had to understand through the model making. These concepts were then analysed and broke down to make the base foundation for the design about secret

Mass

Frame and Infill

7

Brion Cemetery ( San Vito, Italy)/ Carlo Scarpa, 1968

In this cemetery we can see that at some point the angles (the points where the lines intersect) are actually on the same lines. Also, the idea of layering helped in giving volume and ornamental effect.

8

1.1 POINT / LINE / PLANE

9

Design concept: I defined this tectonic from my understanding of point/line plane as a point which is the base of everything and by combining lines, planes are formed. My idea for the model was built on this definition. I started from a point where the planes are derived from this central point but also they all end at the same point. Using the triangular shape planes as they supported the theme of my design, I layered them differently to create different dimensional spaces for habitation and interaction.

“A room is not a room without a natural light “ . LOuis Khan This art piece explains how a block of mass can be crafted and shaped to function in a different way. I like the idea of making a big opening to let the light in as one strong beam.

12

My design was like a tree structure. The tree has braches all ending at one point and they all connected to the roots. It like in life we all end at the place at the end despite what we do and which way in life we take.

1.2 MASS Design concept: I defined mass differently compare to the common understanding of it as I looked at mass as light and people. For me, when people gather at a place, they made the mass and usually people want to get the light where everything is bright but to get to the light, they have to go through the darkness. They also take different paths to achieve one goal but each path is different from the others.

1.3 FRAME AND INFILL

15

Angular by Andres Gallardo Albajar This precedent shows how the repetition of a shape in a certain way can create an interesting view that might be confusing while it is simply designed.

16

Design concept: For frame and infill, my concept was about confusion. It is about revealing but not to the extent that everything is exposed People are usually attracted to thing that they are uncertain about or unclear. I used the paper folds to create these zig zag lines that expose some of the interior but not clear so that it teases the outsiders and invite them in to discover the hidden spaces behind the infill. Once they are in, there would be all these other folds that points in which make the space feel packed and confusing.

2.0 HERRING ISLAND: SECRET: A POINT WHERE EVERYTHING STARTS AND ENDS Secrets usually draw you in through the trip. The deeper you go in, the more difficult it becomes to find your way. A secret does not stand alone. To have a secret, there have to be steps/ pathways which lead to the revealing. These steps all expand from one point where the secret is usually hidden and revealed at the same time. It resembles a light spectrum where at a point white light expands or refract into colorful rays. At times, a secret can be the shortest distance between two. Despite the fact that we habitually think a secret is the longest distance. Sometime, it can be in front of us but we cannot see it even though a we all know that secret doesn’t want to be found. In order to hide itself, it will mislead just like it would in a maze when in reality, a secret can be in front of your face. The point is at the tip of the island. The view of the city is hidden at the end and by getting there, the view will be revealed and people will be interacting with the environment. Also, they have the choice of revealing their secrets as well.

Vegetation

Pathways

People’s Intensity

In the site analysis, I looked at different aspects that contribute in shaping the characteristics of Herring Island such as vegetation, pathways, shadow and sun, topography, noise disturbance and people’s intensity through the island. All this helps me pick a selected site based on the analytical information I gathered through the site analysis

Shadow 24

Topography

Noise Distrubance

The site I selected is at the tip of the island where the beautiful view of the city and the bridge is revealed. The site suited my design the best in different aspects. For example, it close to the river which bring fresh air and makes people feel relaxed. Looking at the topography of the site which is middle level which suited my design and the shape of the island at the site suited my concept ( at a point where everything expands) which is similar to the shape of the island as it is narrow at the tip and it spread out as you walk opposite to the tip. The trees block the view on the ground level which would make people use my design to explore.

25

Design concept: For the conceptacle, I studied the three tectonics and I decided to take the idea of point/line/plane and develop it as it has a strong characteristics. It emphasises a point which everything start. The pin represents the point the string are like light rays that spread from there.

26

2.2 CONCEPTACLE

27

The Oasis pavilion by OBBA

This pavilion shows beauty and elegance through a simple form. I like the use of free end strings which would allow movement and emphasis freedom. Also, the shadow caused by the opening and the gaps between the strings is interesting. 28

I liked the look and effects of strings while I used them in my conceptacle so I decided to incorporate within the final design. I looked up architectural projects that used string and the effects of the strings were spectacular. The aspect that I was more interested in was the relationship between the intensity of strings and the shadow/lighting. Also, the way the strings are used can vary and create different atmospheres similar to the photos below. The strings are hanged straight which create a mysterious feel while the next precedents shows such an elegant look by intersecting the string neatly.

2.3 FINAL DRAWINGS

32

Design concept: People would make their choice to which path they want to take to get the point where the secret is exposed and revealed. Depending on their choice, they would experience different feeling and see several light effects/ shadows and when they get to the point where the secret is exposed, they will have to make another decision whether to continue and go over the stairs to reveal the gorgeous view which they might not be aware of or not. It is similar to our real life situation when we are all running towards a goal, some people will have easy and smooth paths while other will struggle through the narrow path and when we get to it, some people become content with their achievement and others go further and reach higher levels.

4.0 REFLECTION Looking back at the entire semester and the studio work that I have done, I have come to gain valuable experience and knowledge. I gained skills through the semester while applying what we learnt in lectures in the exercises through my designs. The three tectonics were very useful and helpful to me through my design journey. They were like the foundation of my final design as I integrate them. They facilitated the final project as it broke it down in small clear concepts. This made me develop a better understanding about the relationships between forms and compositions, and the different zones such as ground, underground, and above ground. Moving on, the site analysis and the blogs were very helpful in the design process and inspiration. While exploring many precedents research in an analytical way, I got to gain knowledge about the architectural field and the design field in general and how they produce such successful designs. Also, going to the site and analysis aspects that I use to look at and think it is not critical made me develop investigative thinking techniques as I thought about the elements in a coherent way stating both the positives and negatives. The final project made me apply all the skills I have learnt through the semester as it was a harder challenge in terms of meeting the brief. I am pleased but my design concept even though I feel like I could have pushed it further in terms of making it more abstract but I still gained very beneficial knowledge and I learnt how to deal with struggles to overcome them and progress. I enjoyed the challenging project as it made me imaginative and creative. Overall, I really enjoyed the studio as we got to discuss and compare ideas with others which helped me in commuting and getting feedback to improve and develop more skills in terms of design, thinking, or oral skills. I learnt a lot through the semester which I believe will help me for the future projects.
