Marian presents Burn, a literary arts magazine that strives to showcase the original art, photography and creative writing of our student body. Burn is published twice a year, once per semester, and we accept submissions from all grade levels. Our submissions are judged anonymously, and those that are selected are subject to minor grammatical corrections. Burn is a forum for creative student expression. Our goal is to give students a place to publish their work and a place to have their peers appreciate their work. Burn is published by Regal Printing Company in Omaha. For the 2020-2021 school year, there will be 800 copies printed per semester. All titles of pieces and page numbers are set in The Bambank Script font. The writing is set in Avenir Light. The softwares used were Adobe InDesign CS6 and Adobe Photoshop CS6. Our adviser was journalism teacher Mrs. Marsha Kalkowski. For inquiries, contact us at burn@omahamarian.org or write us 7400 Military Ave, Omaha, NE 68134.

“diversity brewed in an asian pot” [ writing by lauren ali ]

A blended pot with colors galore Simmer and stew with delight Washed from the sea to our nation’s door Crashing like waves coming ashore Views and differences abound in the night Each person celebrates life, dancing with happiness Oh, what a beautiful sight The pot simmers with kindness Lovely, don’t we all agree? The nation’s melting pot creates diversity People from near and far can be united in who they are In this land of liberty

“toys for boys” [writing by kaileigh schorg]

Woke up Same routine Pouring coffee while the scent of cigarettes linger onto my clothes It’s not the ideal situation It’s exhausting Relentless The sound of the clock teases me as I take orders for rich men who are too busy on their high horse I try to make small talk to pass by Usually goes something along the lines of “I’m working so my kids can have a better life than me” followed up with a fake laugh. He says, “Really you have kids? Your body says that you haven’t paid attention to any of them” as his business partner tugs on my skirt The place was full yet no one said a thing It’s as if they judged my actions more than his But what do we know? It’s what we were all told to be Toys for boys who don’t take care of them properly

“window” [ writing by kate hoppe ]

One pane of glass, that’s all that it is, That keeps me from them, keeps me from it. From the winds that howl, From the dogs that growl, From the wild’s adventurous call. For birds of a feather, May be together, Yet I must be alone this fall. For I am alone at this window tonight, Though forced isolation could be cause of fright, I have some friends, there’s the man in the moon, The one friend I can see anytime soon. And the roaming cats that just give me a look, How proudly they shun what for granted we took. I wish I were out of the glass,

And down on the grass, When we don’t have to be six feet away. When we are no longer apart, And can laugh from the heart, How we long for that day! Yet here I am, not outside looking in, But inside looking out, the ironic spin. For I am alone at this window tonight, Though forced isolation could be cause of fright, I have one friend, he’s the man in the moon, The one friend I can see anytime soon.

You brought me so low To make yourself feel better You brought me down with you And used me to climb the ladder, Waved at me from the top, Let go, and watched me shatter

“knowing”

in a world full of unknowns and no guaranteed tomorrow i thrive off the knowns. so here’s what i’m sure of: the love my people have so graciously given me. the perfectness of the imperfect the thousands of pictures residing in my iphone of everything my eyes have enjoyed. my voice and the ability i have to use it for good. the signs and images of the passage of times. the ground underneath my shaking legs. but most importantly mysellf and the purpose i will come across.

i’ve been alone before that’s not what this is alone is a needed break alone brings quiet and calm alone is a choice

“ this is more than alone” [ writing by elizabeth foreman ]

this is lonely lonely is forced upon you lonely is a cage with a key accessible to everyone but you to be alone is up to you but lonely happens to a person, the result of the actions of others if alone is stepping in the shade for a second to hide from the heat of the sun, lonely is watching the sun go down and never knowing if you’ll experience warmth again i’ve been alone before but alone was always temporary and that is definitely not what this is

“ time divided ” [ writing by kate hoppe ]

As a whole the world may seem quite scary and quite large Just take one horizon at a time ‘til you become in charge So a year divides to seasons, Seasons melt to months Months to weeks that end as days, And days that set to hours that minutely tick away And so the new year starts off auld And leaves colors become more bold And time’s as ephemeral as gold Yet long enough for life to unfold

“fire”

[ writing by murphy mertz ]

The world’s been swept up in the blaze That sent the states into a craze. People are shouting, word after word, Hoping their voices will be heard.

But it wasn’t enough; their voices tire. So now they’re setting the world on fire. One thing we always seem to discern, Is that when we fight fire with fire we all get burned.

“home”

[ writing by melina piperis ] skies of blue and hills of green sparkling oceans and peaceful streams dew upon grass, towering trees are things we take for granted, it seems the simple pleasure of a vivid sunset the power of nature, we often forget to our natural world we’re forever in debt so who are we to act as a threat? for just like us, the world is alive and because of us, she can’t survive but thanks to her we’re able to thrive so it’s our responsibility to revive

14

the home she has allowed us to take the place she has shared for our sake and the terror that we have made a tragic and forgotten commonplace so forget the straw, for it is not worth the years we’ve neglected to put her first soon all this damage can not be reversed so respect your mother, your home, your earth.

“your words”

[ writing by maddie adam ]

If I could repeat those words that you said to me I’d scream them from the top of my lungs in hopes that the world would see All of the unthinkable things you did to try to ruin me Yet no matter what, I would never repeat your words to anybody

Stevie- Melina Piperis

“i’m addicted” [writing by lauren ali]

Being alone is a drug. It plays with your emotions. It makes you feel unloved and not worth it. It leaves your head spinning, your heart hurt and shattered. It sets alight this unknown flame in your soul And there’s no amount of water that can put it out. Loneliness...there’s no cure. It’s always going to be there, but so am I. When you’re lonely, just come find me where the stardust falls. And I’ll give you a piece of my heart to fill your empty one, a shoulder to cry on Because I’m your sister and there’s no amount of loneliness that can replace my love for you.

“all of us”

[ writing by sofia torres-salvador ] Flowers are beautiful things, One of God’s greatest creations. But why do we walk over them like kings, Acting as if this is only our nation? Flowers get old and wrinkle, Time is impossible to stop. But they’ve still got that twinkle, Like a star that’s about to drop. Flowers are all unique, But should all be equal. Then why do we speak, Bad about those who come to start a new sequel? Flowers sway in the breeze, Like the waves in the ocean. So why do we look away with ease, From those with different notions? Flowers rest with the moon, Greeting us from way up there. So why do we take too soon, Their lives, it’s just not fair. All flowers are perfect in my heart, And things to be respected. Flowers are pieces of art, Not things to be neglected.

“forget”

[ writing by murphy mertz ]

The sting of rejection, horrific news, Little mistakes, society’s views. A fear of the dark, a lifetime of regret; These are all things we try to forget.

“ the bigger picture [ writing by mattighan zielie ]

the earth prospered in the womb of its mother, the universe. he flourished with age fabricating breathtaking sights and intricate beings. all was harmonious until one day the earth fell ill from damage caused by those he so graciously raised. through this he stayed faithful greatly trusting that the life inside of him would return the ultimate favor but time passed and his hope grew dim and the universe was set aflame in a bought of anger for she couldn’t begin to understand how something so small failed to see the bigger picture

“laces lost

[ writing by naomi delkamiller ] It was not until I was told to stay home that I realized how much I love to roam. Out and about walking in my shoes, never did I think I had something to lose. But when there was nowhere to go, my laces stood still. Lost without thrill my sneakers became speakers of a distant life.

oh sweet girl, dry your eyes use the hands that hold you up and the fingers which have wiped the tears of your past now remember, the faster you learn that you cannot control the uncontrollable the faster you’ll become in control of things that have the power to change your life. as times grow dim changes on the inside will set aglow the outside and eventually even the deepest darkest corners will have to follow its lead for light is as contagious as the smile that will be on your face

it’s her

Run to the forest, to the mountain, to the field It’s in the steps you take, so never yield Run because you want to, because you can Or run for those who don’t get the chance to stand

24

Run or climb or swim or dive Or swing. let go, and learn to fly Run with the deer and under the birds Go run and find the wild herds For they are the ones that truly understand That freedom means running across the land

“run”

Go, go and run Off into the setting sun Past the horizon and past the fears To where you want to go after all these years Then jump to the sky at the peak of the hill And run down fast ‘til your heart you fulfull
