THE NETWORK’S DECLASSIFIED FRESHMAN YEAR SURVIVAL GUIDE

editorial by isabelleswanson

reshmen. Welcome to the first day of the rest of your lives. High school. The final frontier. You’ve seen movies about it. The Breakfast Club. High School Musical. Jaws. You’ve set your uniform out on your dresser. You’ve color-coded your notebooks and folders. You’ve made Frosted Flakes part of your balanced breakfast. Now,

polo every day of the week, except on Wednesdays when you can wear your favorite Marian spirit shirt!

Feeling a bit chilly? Throw on your grey cardigan, black pullover sweater or new blue quarter-zip! Don’t forget to wear your polo under the cardigan and sweatshirt.

Blast back to the 80’s and rock a plaid skirt or skort! Black shorts look groovy underneath your 3’’ above the knee skirt!

it’s your time to discover what high school is all about. Whether you already know half of your class or don’t know anyone, you’ve become part of the Marian community. That means friendly classmates, incredible teachers, awesome t-shirts, inside jokes pretty much no one from any other school will understand and lots and

lots of taco salad. Lots of taco salad. The Network staff has come up with a few tips we think will be helpful, but regardless of what tips, if any, you take to heart (please, please, please listen to tip #1), you’re in for a great four years! Marian will teach you so much, and above all, it will help you become a confident, independent, thinking leader.

“The worst part was definitely getting sick the day we had to travel back to Omaha and fainting on Mo.” Meredith Faust ’16 House of gold A prayer house near the Royal Palace in Phnom Penwh, Cambodia, shows impressive landscaping. The landscaping is truly fit for a King.

Oh rainy days Lauren Merfeld ’17 flashes a thumbs up while trying to escape from a sudden downpour. Students and teachers alike struggled to stay dry before entering the Royal Palace grounds in Bangkok.

Doing the crab walk Nikki Rhoades ’17, Sophie Dineen ’17, Mia LaHood ’17 and Claire Kilborn ’17 carefully watch their step after noticing several tiny crabs in the sand. The girls were walking to a boat before hiking to Phraya Nakhon cave in Prachuap Khiri Khan, Thailand.

Buddha-ful views The Golden Mount of Wat Phra That Doi Suthep in Chiang Mai, Thailand, shoots high into the sky from its place on the Doi Suthep mountain. Awe-inspiring views of the city can be seen from the temple.

All that glitters is gold The Royal Rest house, near the Throne Hall, was used as a waiting area before the Cambodian King mounts an elephant for the royal procession. It now houses gifts from foreign leaders.

Q & A with DR missionary Kate Kellen alliemorrissey

Q

Kate Kellen ’18

How long were you in the DR (Dominican Republic) and what service did you do there?

A: We went from June 4 through June 15, and our main service work was helping the people of our village paint their newly built church.

Q

A

What was your favorite part of being in the DR?

The best part of the DR was the connection that I formed. The connections with my 10 Marian sisters are so strong, and I know that I can lean on any of them. I also got to meet such amazing Dominicans who welcomed us with open arms. Did you make any special connections with other girls on the trip or with the natives? I really connected with a young girl named Brenda. We played together and danced together. On our last day, we gave each other friendship bracelets and even shed some tears as we parted.

Q

A

Q

What was the most rewarding part of your trip?

Through the trip I have formed a stronger relationship with God, and I am able to see Him shining through people more than I could before.

Horror restroom memory recalled column by anahingorani

Restroom changes

graphic by carmenmiller

• new floors • new stalls • new hand-soap dispensers • new paint • new ceilings • new exhaust fan in the freshman restroom • new doors in the old building • new mirrors • *senior restroom received an ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) approved stall *all floors now have at least one ADA approved stall

I walked in, picked a stall, no big deal, was just sitting down to my afternoon break when all of a sudden my stall door banged open and slammed against the wall! I was positively petrified, and found myself face- to-face with a senior. Pure shock and mortification was surely evident on my face. The senior shrugged, muttered a “sorry” and shut the stall door. However, to a freshman, this seemed like the end of the world. In record time, I was engulfed in a sea of sweat. It dripped off my nose, down my back and soaked my armpits. My hands shot for the toilet paper. GONE. Looking back, I realize how dumb it is that I didn’t just ask a neighboring stall occupant for a couple squares of toilet paper. But hey, live and learn. In my mind, this was crunch time. I didn’t have time to wipe! I bolted out of the stall and made a mad dash for the sink. I ran my hands under the weak stream of water and furiously pumped the soap dispenser only to find, surprise, no soap. The line of people for the hand dryer seemed several miles long, leaving me with no choice but to dash out of the bathroom with my hands dripping lukewarm sink water. I haven’t recovered. So when I heard they were redoing the restrooms this summer, I was on cloud nine. All of the student restrooms besides the Quad restroom received new flooring, bigger mirrors and the sinks that didn’t work are fixed. The doors on all stalls have also been replaced, along with new toilet paper dispensers installed. I, along with the whole student body, give a big thank you to everyone who is helping to make our restroom experiences a little more pleasant.
