MARIA DA PIEDADE MONTEIRO A COMPENDIUM OF WORK FROM 2013 -2015 Bachelor of Architecture Studies Beira Interior University, Covilh達 Graduation- October 2015 The Architecture appears as something unconscious, from dreams, of an object, from a plain concept word, or from the mental world, were the ideas are created. The architecture becames emotional, understood, and reflective. It manipulates and transforms the human life. When Im designing a project, I put myself in the role of inhabitants, reflecting on how they will live and understood the space, where the natural light, becames a component element, raising it to a structural understanding. I hear music, I feel heat, cold, joy, sadness, on every project that I design, as well the spaces that I atend. I try to provoke an experience from the physical world to the unconscious, assuming this, the real side of making architecture.

[RE] HABITAR Houses for students On the corner of the Engineering and Architecture college, on the city of Covilh達, it was given a challeg to design and solve a major problem that exists in the city: the accommodation of students and also, try to design something that increases the sense of community and ensure commercial spaces. It intends to evaluate the concept of residence, designing a space, more than a room with kitchen, bathroom and living room. The key objective is the versatility and flexibility of spaces, where the space could be understood as a T0, but also, transformed into a T1 or T2.
Shape based on the surrounding buildings of the Implementation Plan.
Design of the pathways: a sense of neighborhood on the projected element.
Converging lines, from the proposals pathways.
Resulting shape from the proposals pathways.
08
Adaptation of the shapes to the sorrounding site
Connection between the buildings and the pathways
Connection between the public spaces and access to the proposal รกreas
Transformation of the shape, creating a connection to the proposals intent.
Final result, correct adaptation to the site and intecncion of the programme.
The concept of flexibility is possible through the application of sliding panels, and also with the right amount of windows, ensuring the lightening, when the space is open or divided. According to the programme, the project intends to raise the sense of community and create commercial areas, non-existent at the moment on implantation site. On the level 0 and level 1, is located the access to the apartments, as well the trade shops, offices and commercial spaces. All spaces are designed on the principle of flexibility and versatility, following the conceptual intention of the houses. On the center of the visual axes and existing lines of the surrounding environement, is located the main square, where all the public spaces converge, bringing a sense of community. The granite, abundant on the surrounding region, emerges as the main material of the entire proposal, being intensely applied on the exterior facade and also on the floor of the square. The building is characterized by the set of geometric shapes, designed according to a visual intet justifying the variety of the apartments orientations, bringing out the best of the surrounding landscape. The balconies emerge as if it were carved from the solid facade, giving the right level of privacy , due to the fact that the entire building of the proposal is exposed to an area of the high public nature.

Single Family Housing + House for the Ederly On the urban void near to the train station, is located the presente project, that seeks to respond to current needs for the housing of the elderly, based on a concept planning of a set of single-family independent houses. For the inspiration it was taken into acount the question: “ where do I want to live when I grow old? The program is based on the projection of 11 houses, shopping areas and spaces for socializing, in an attempt to revitalize this urban areas where the is a lack of sense of community, bringing together the different generations in a single urban space.
The project concept is based on designing for the future older generation, based on personal experience, and how I would like to grow old. Inspired for the double meaning of words, where I try to transform the typical architecture of elderly housing, designing the future.
28
The two types of aging, are the most important factors for the proposal. Proposal nÂş 1: Project a house for an elderly that needs help and is family dependent, sharing the same space; proposal nÂş2: project a house for an elderly that is family independent, designing a independent space, connected with the rest of the house. Another important feature of the concept, is an attempt to redesign the typical housing, considered common and typical urban landscapes by withdrawing the basic characteristics and transform it. Arranged according to a set of forms, organized according to the lines and movements of the site plan, providing a connection with all the surrounding space. For the proposal, it is intended to design 3 main levels, according to the different elevation of the site, 11 houses, 3 main squares corresponding to different levels and commercial areas, providing a sense of comunity. The need to ensure privacy, important factor, is possible with the annulment of the openings, windows. To ensure the lighting of the whole room, it was designed an opening, strategically placed, starting from the walls to the roof, that breaks the entire facade, creating a conection with the landscape. The transparency of the glass, the interior and exterior together in spacial harmony responds to the house needs, where theres a place to rest, to enjoy, to live, to be gratefull, full of life and light, honoring CovilhĂŁ landscape.
Area near to the train station, located in a trendy area, represented by recent buildings with heights variants between 5+ 8 floors, urban areas lacking infrastructure support, lack of identity with the city.

The social side of architecture 2015
Social architecture is the conscious design of an environment that encourages a desired range of social behaviors leading towards some goal or set of goals, this is the main objective of the master thesis, where the architecture tries to seek solutions and improve the conditions of the under countries development. Vietnam is a country in constant development. Present day Vietnam rebuilds itself from a historic past marked by poverty and war. In what respects urbanism in coastal cities, such development is somehow unregulated. Two reasons concur for this: a lack of financial resources in the population and a changing a costline derived from rising waters due to monsoons . Which justifies the need for an architectural intervention
As a consequence, the residential neighborhoods, located on the bank and bifurcation of the river, where the Bassac River meets the Mekong River (geographic focus of this thesis), are subject to structural stress, in the form of houses lacking normal living conditions (as a proper cuisine and a decent bathroom), constant degradation (due to meteorological conditions, use of poor materials and lack of design), and finally ruin. This thesis approaches the problem of improving the life conditions of Vietnamese people living in the outskirts of Chau Doc, Vietnam. Important vectors influencing the study are respect for traditions, habits and culture of locals; use of largely available, cheap and unprocessed materials (e.g., bamboo); and a clear improvement of life conditions at both the family and community levels. The contribution of this thesis takes the form of a design of a house (including Dot It Yourself construction details) and a plan for a small community to share public ressources. As a concept, the project was inspired by tradition and religion of the founding peoples of the Vietnamese civilization, where the symbol in common, power and longevity, is the inspiration form, redesigned into the drawing plan of the module house, creating a connection between the physical and spiritual world.

LOCATION PLAN N Environment surrounding the city of Chau Doc
Chau Doc is located on the intersection of the Bassac River, on the border with Cambodia. Traditional city with 157,298 inhabitants, covering an area of 105, 29 km2, characterized by the cultural diversity. The city is the result of an historical past, recognized by civil and religious architecture, dressed in contrasting colors. On the river bank, are located the residential neighborhoods with poor conditions, for families with less economic potential, exposed to the rising river water levels, reaching 8 meters in the monsoon period. The city developed inland, distant from the risk flooding areas, characterized by the recent constrution and better conditions. Is divided into different areas, with equipment and educational establishments, Schools and Colleges. Despite being in under development, Chau Doc is assumed as a future promise city, the gateway to Vietnam who crosses the Bassac river, resulting in a constant struggle between the fervor of evolution and seeking to maintain the culture and tradition of the people . The thesis proposal inteds to increase the sense of community, tradition, religion, respetind the characteristics of the place of intervention and the needs of the inahbitants, and also create a solution for the water problems.

N SQUARES AND PUBLIC AREAS
The traditional architecture of South of Vietnam, is the mirror of simplicity and way of life of the inhabitants. It is divided into two floors, differentiated by the right foot hierarchy, where the first floor are located areas of great public nature, divided by bedrooms, living area, kitchen and bathroom( in the case of some families). On the 1st floor, is located the leisure areas and rooms. The main feature is supported on stakes, disorganized placed with a weak and degraded structural level form, exposed to flooding and water action for destruction.
34
The proposal intends to increase the sense of community typical of the Vietnamese culture, through projection of urban environments. The project designs houses and squares, for the residents, that promote de sense of comunitty and guarantee a place for cook food, respecting the culture and rituals of Vietnam. The Housing should respond to climate antagonism of the country, ie a warm, dry climate and a hot and humid climate, so the space is designed to ensure the possbility to be widely ventilated, but also completely sealed in if warm weather.
