REUSE OF FACTORY BUILDINGS FOR DENSIFICATION
The thesis investigates the catalyst role of architectural interventions in the urban transformation. Three interrelated directions were the main theme of the graduation studio: Densification-Railway station-Reuse. The studio focused on the areas around the Zaanlijn, the railway line that crosses the municipality of Zaanstad, connects the villages of the area with one another and continues southwards to Amsterdam and northwards to Alkmaar. The train has always played an important role for the development of the villages and industry of Zaanstad through its role as a means of transport. Nowadays this role tends to be underrated. The second theme is the densification around the railway station areas of Zaanlijn, within (800 m radius) walking distance around them. Densification serves as an answer to the low amount of people who live close to the railway station. The last theme was the reuse of the industrial plots that nowadays co-exist with the residential areas breaking the continuity of the urban tissue.

CONCEPTUAL SKETCH OF THE PEDESTRIAN AXIS
The location chosen by the author was the railway area of Koog Zaandijk that includes the adjacent chocolate factory complex of ADM, which is currently in operation. The highlight of the area is the open air park of Zaanse Schans that attracts almost a million tourists per year. The goal was to connect the railway station through an industrial route to the Zaanse Schans and make both the locals and the visitors familiar with another aspect of the history of Zaanstad; the industrial past. ‘How can densification achieve the transformation of the industrial site of ADM into a vital, connecting and integrated element that enhances the identity of the area?’ Through the above mentioned problematic, densification will take place in the industrial estate of ADM, that is transformed into an industrial park with cultural, retail and sports functions in the heart of a new residential area. Therefore the research question in an urban level deals with the connection of densification to reuse of existing building stock.
7
ARCHITECTURAL LEVEL It becomes obvious that the Koog Zaandijk station becomes a central element in the proposed masterplan, as it connects the two sides of the urban plan. Therefore, the proposal focusses on the railway station as an element with potential to contribute actively to the life of Zaandijk and unify the two areas that up to now separates. The existing station is a two-track island platform on the ground level. Nevertheless, the current infrastructure situation demands that the station and the crossings are in different levels, so the result is that the rail tracks cannot remain on the same level with Guisweg, an important crossing from west to the east. -The second problem of the station refers to the relationship with the surroundings. There has always been a front side and a back side, due to the fact that the station itself was the border that separated a densely populated area close to the river Zaan, from an area with natural characteristics and poor road infrastructure. Therefore, the station separates the west and east side of the area, and does not contribute in the more balanced expansion to the west. -Another problem is that the parking facilities are too dominant. That means that the ground level of the station area is occupied by vehicles and does not leave any open space for other activities. This lowers the quality of the station area and the district. -There is no space for pedestrians in the front side of the station as the station is positioned exactly against the Provincialeweg. Therefore, only an underground passage provides the necessary connection with the opposite side of Provincialeweg. The two main aspects in which the station can contribute to the solution of these problems is the elimination of the barrier effect that now causes and the functions which can be accommodated. The design led to the creation of an elevated railway station with two side platforms. On the ground level the station accommodates a market and an exhibition space and offers direct connection to public space, while at the same time it becomes a visible element to the district and an accessible transport node.

prominent architectural element that crowns the station structure. The connection with the east and west side of the area is achieved through the main pedestrian and cyclists’ path that crosses the ground level of the station and extends towards both directions. The choice of flexible uses shows the potential of this project to respond to rapid changes of function. The distinction between the function of the railway and the functions of the ground level is made visible with the choice of different materials that express each function.
11
The concrete expresses the railway bridge and the wood the ground level functions. The railway bridge is an independent structure that shelters the public functions underneath, and shows the intention to distinguish the ground and the roof in a conceptual and literal way. Therefore, three horizontal levels are created: the market and exhibition space, the train platform and the roof as the last cover of the station. Finally, the station works as a literal extension of public space, a world that fuses transport with a mix of functions under one roof. At the same time it defines an identity for the area.

ROUTES ALONG THE BORDER OF THE CITY AN URBAN INTERVENTION AND A FLOATING THEATRE IN SOUTH ATTICA, GREECE
REFERENCES The idea was initially approached through references to the element of water. The water became an inspiration because it encompasses the feature of motion, and because the human contact with it offers a special quality of life. Another reference was motion that is embodied in human structures. For example the vehicles, which through their activities give life to a place but don’t leave any built traces. Their dynamic character is underlined through their movement and the change they suggest, while activating the surroundings. THE CITY TOWARDS THE SEA Athens could be an ideal city to enjoy the sea; nevertheless it has turned its back to the sea. This is visible at the waterfront where the environment is densely built and privatized. Therefore, the need for open, accessible spaces which establish direct relationship with the sea is more urgent than just another building. In an attempt to clarify the characteristics that compose the relationship between the citizens, the city and the seaside landscape, diagrammatic sections of the coastal front of Attica were made. OBSERVATIONS - the alteration of the coastline, which hardly maintains any natural characteristics - the lack of a continuous public pedestrian route, - the main road axes which connect Athens with other coastal areas interrupt any physical and visual relationship with the sea - the continuous, solid ‘wall’ of buildings that overlook the sea. INTENTIONS These issues turn the coastal front into a barrier almost impenetrable. The main intention is to provide motivation for the re-establishment of the contact between city and waterscape relationship and for a reconsideration of the notion of “leisure” and “recreation” within the urban environment. Finally, the aim is that the city regains its identity through the connection between the urban and seaside landscape. STUDY AREA The place of intervention is the waterfront of Athens, at the suburb of Vouliagmeni. The main reason for this choice is that tthe place functions as a natural bay. Also, the orientation and the structure of the bay offer protection from the wind and keep the water warm throughout the year, a fact that explains the variety of activities such as sailing, winterswimming and other activities related to the sea. Finally, Vouliagmeni is the border between the urban and the natural landscape, as it is clearly shown on the map. Nevertheless, the gulf of Vouliagmeni still has all of the typical urban problems that were described above.

PROPOSAL The proposal refers to two parallel routes that follow the border of the sea with the city; first, a pedestrian route along a continuous public space, that brings back the uninhibited access of the citizens to the water. The discontinuities of the route are bridged through lightweight structures. Moreover, the proposal includes the design of a floating theater for open-air events. The floating structure traces the second route along the shore and anchors at several open spaces. The construction of the theater consists of a rectangular platform 24mX8m. The 2/3rd of the platform’s length is set on a metal continuous pontoon that permits the towage. The platform along with the pontoon comprises the base for the stage, the backstage and the dressing rooms. A strong load bearing structure (12 meters high) that consists of four frames suspends the rest of the platform, where there are rows of seats/tiers for the spectators. The design objective was the stage to function as exhibition space, theater stage, and concert space according to the events taking place. This is why the rows of seats for the spectators are flexible and rotate until they become flat, as part of the floor. The starting point of these routes is spotted opposite the Vouliagmeni Lake and shapes a naturally protected mooring. Only necessary infrastructure is installed, such as changing rooms and toilets for the winter swimmers and the visitors of the area. A wooden canteen is also designed to provide for drinks and snacks. In order to make the area visible an observatory is designed at the edge of the mooring, where people have the possibility to overlook the bay.

URBAN INTERVENTION A CULTURAL SPACE AND RESIDENTIAL AREA IN IMITTOS, ATHENS, GREECE
BACHELOR PROJECT 2008 National Technical University of Athens TUTORS: Pogkan S. , Raftopoulos S.
IDENTIFICATION OF THE AREA The study area has as its epicenter the cartridge factory of the company Greek Defensive Systems that is under the protection of the current Ministry of National Defence. It was founded in 1908 and gave the whole area the name “PYRKAL” from the initiatives of the company. The area lies in the foot of mountain Imittos that represents a significant natural element for the city. Additionally, the mountain affects the climate of the area and “invades” through the terrain and the sequence of green spaces that have survived from the intense building. An example is the park to the east that forms an important open space for the district. The main circulation roads adjacent to the area are Vouliagmenis avenue and National Resistance Avenue that both link the area with the south suburbs and the center of Athens. Until now, this part of the city remains closed behind the high walls of the factory, which is still in operation. Therefore it functions as an urban void in the heart of the city.

CONTEXT-CONCEPT The proposal intends to “stitch” together the different parts of the city. On the one hand there is a residential area, where low scale and a character of neighborhood is retained. On the other side there high speed axes and offices or shopping centers in taller buildings, near the metro station. In the middle of these two opposites, there is an area surrounded by a high wall; it is the cartridge factory. DESIGN STRATEGY The first decision to make was to keep certain buildings that belong to the factory complex, as a significant part of the area’s recent history. Therefore, these buildings should contribute to the contemporary life of the citizens. The main objective is that these buildings accommodate cultural facilities because of their strategic position inside the complex. The four of them form an entity and in the new design are inscribed on a rectangular, concrete platform. Along the east-west axis an esplanade unfolds and links visually the two edges, reestablishing the continuity of the green stripe that derives from the mountain Imittos and the adjacent park. Moreover the esplanade
unifies the cultural and recreational areas; a ‘sunken’ square with an open-air theatre and cafes, a small library surrounded by a pool and the cultural platform of the historical buildings. The topography of the park and the mountain create the ideal background for this linear route. In the north-south axis the roads are extended so as to penetrate the boundary thus creating a ‘comb’, a pedestrian movement grid that seeks to establish continuity of the urban tissue. Another important gesture was to place the housing complex opposite the main residential area, so that the continuity of the neighbourhood is assured. Moreover, the new houses are away from the road congestion and communicate better with each other. The old passageway that ‘cuts’ the site in the middle is also retained as a pedestrian road, in order to connect the two sides of the area. In addition, the area has been designed
25
to accommodate an open-air cinema and auditorium, to enable the growth of vegetation and the creation of various recreational areas. The different areas of the park have been landscaped with a variety of elements. THE HOUSING COMPLEX The residences are organized in five neighborhoods of 70 dwellings, each one enclosing an open space in the heart of it. The inhabitants can access the underground parking space from the streets that separate the neighborhoods. All the dwellings have got individual entrances and private gardens that face southeast. All terraces are planted to improve the microclimate of the area. The walls support the timber corridors –the main circulation areas. Two dwelling types were designed. The units of 120 m2 -6.5X10 meters- were designed as two-storied family houses. The rest were designed for a single parent and child and cover 65m2.

PIRAEUS STREET RAILWAY ERMOU PEDESTRIAN STREET
The project involves the design of a building complex to accommodate the Greek Film Archive. The site is located in the area of Gazi, very close to the city’s centre. CONTEXT The area is characterized by the intense presence of an old gas factory. This industrial area operated from 1854 to 1984. Small, folk houses of factory workers composed neighborhoods and constituted the area around the plant, which was called “Gazochori”(gas village). In 2004, the location was reused as a cultural center named Technopolis after the renovation of the buildings’ shells. Since then, the whole area stands as a meeting place for young people and artists. In particular, the main facade of the plot is on Piraeus Street while the backside is in contact with small-scale buildings belonging to “Gazochori”. In addition, the plot is adjacent to the “Cultural Center of Technopolis”.
CONCEPT The central concept in the design is based on a strong border along the Piraeus Street, whereas the scale of the other buildings is in dialogue with the low rise houses on Orpheus Street and the cylindrical metal structures of Technopolis. Therefore, an introvert solution is made, the core of which is the open-air square. DESIGN DESCRIPTION The main entrance is on Piraeus Street, where the strong boundary is interrupted and one upward ramp leads to the reception that is located at an intermediate level. From the reception one can go to the balcony of the main auditorium and one of the secondary auditoriums, as well as the first floor of the exhibition area.

A stairwell leads to the ground floor of the complex where you can meet the main hall and the other secondary auditorium. Moreover, at the same level extends the rest exhibition area. A steel corridor leads to the circular library. At this point arises one amphitheatric open-air space, which can be used for outdoor activities. At the third floor there is the administration office and the cafeteria, while at the basement the parking area and auxiliary spaces are organized. The building mass is mostly concentrated in the front part of the plot, leaving free space to function as an urban square and a passage. Therefore, all citizens are able to access the square.

THE SPIRAL STRUCTURE
BACHELOR PROJECT 2005 National Technical University of Athens SUPERVISOR: Prof.Demiri K.
MUSICAL SECONDARY SCHOOL IN NEA IONIA, ATTICA, GREECE The music school sits three storeys above ground, offering 2.400m2 for students and staff and houses a library, a concert room, special classrooms for music lessons, general teaching spaces, administration offices and parking services. CONTEXT The first inhabitants of Nea Ionia were Greek refugees that came in 1923 from Asia Minor. They built neighbourhoods and small enterprises that later became important industries for the area. To them, music was the shelter that kept them together. Elaborate musicians became popular and left a great musical heritage to the next generations. ASSIGNMENT Music schools apply to children who are interested in music as a creative means of expression. The common interest for music, the long-stay at school and more personal relationships between teachers and students that evoke under tutorial lessons or team classes, demand a re-examination of the typical function of the school area and the time schedule.
CONCEPT A structure that imposes the entrance to the space through a movement that continues from side to side was the first gesture. The proposal seeks to exploit the architectural elements of the site, such as the chimney and the high stonewall of an old factory to the east. The introvert gesture of the spire came from the necessity for the security of the children and for a clear arrangement of the functions. The main courtyard becomes the stage for the activities of the children. In addition, the gradation of the levels gives the possibility of the terraces that create a theatrical atmosphere related to the main courtyard. The orientation was significant so that all classrooms receive natural light throughout the day. Therefore, the volumes of the spire are
arrayed facing south so that they don’t shade one another or cast shadow to the inner courtyard. Moreover, the classrooms have natural light and good ventilation. On the contrary, the perimetric corridors prevent from direct sun exposure. The old chimney belongs to the textile factory and stands as a sign of the past, so we decided to keep low heights near it, so that it doesn’t compete with the school height. GREEK GREEN GREET by Droog RETROSPECTIVE EXHIBITION IN BENAKI MUSEUM ATHENS, GREECE
PROFESSIONAL PROJECT 2007 Workshop Dionisis Sotovikis COLLABORATORS D.Sotovikis, K. Mariolopoulou
Droog design is a Dutch company that was founded in 1993. In English it is translated as ‘dry’ and in Dutch it stands for someone or something which is straightforward, without any additions. The creativity and global assets of the company in the world of design and how this can enhance our everyday life has led to the international appreciation of the Dutch design once more. The collaboration of the company with several designers who have an alternative and sometimes humoristic attitude to design has given pieces that are unique in character and concept. These pieces were re-considered through the perspective of the exhibition in Athens and the scenario of the house which has different rooms was chosen. The visitorsguests had the opportunity to wander around the objects of Droog and look around, touch them, sit on them and play a unique role in the interaction process of their visit. The author’s role was to organise and define the museum spaces with Droog items and the use of additional constructions that enable the visitor to grasp the concept of the exhibition. The retrospective exhibition with the title ‘Greek Green Greet’ was organised by the workshop Dionisis Sotovikis in Benaki Museum in Athens on June 4th 2010 and was the largest Droog exhibition since 2007.
