SOCIAL STATION

Co-Working Office & Retail | Fall 2016

Social Station is a co-working space in Dallas, TX, for start up tech companies, website designers, and app developers. Taking influence from I.M. Pei‘s iconic work in Dallas, the design utilizes a composition of geometric forms to create organized and functional spaces. The simplicity of geometric forms inform the feel of the space. Minimalistic detailing and clean lines create an environment that provides a comforting and calming backdrop for creative professionals to work. Spaces are determined by a geometric form - either a triangle or quadrilateral. They are arranged according to function, with work spaces on the west side of the building and entertainment & social spaces focused on the east side. Some geometric forms overlap to create relationships between spaces and to unify the building as a whole. Workers in the space draw inspiration from their environment as they work to create their own functional, minimalistic, and aesthetically pleasing spaces on the web.

COMPOSITION OF GEOMETRIC FORMS In order to create seperation between the spaces of my decidely open office plan, I turned to ceiling elements that helped represent and define various areas throughout the office and retail space. The first ceiling, a composition of grey felt geometries, signifies a heads down work area. In more social and collaborative areas of the office such as the kitchen and lounge, there is a wooden beam ceiling feature that pulls you through the space, influencing movement and socialization. In the social retail spaces, such as the presentation gallery and the product testing areas, a fun composition of acoustic ceiling panels are suspended a various heights to accommodate many conversations without having the space become so loud that no one can hear one another.

LUXURY SKYBOX

Hospitality & Sports| Fall 2016

Urban Vinyl Productions is a Brooklyn based R&B record label. R&B is often characterized by its smooth flow and themes of emotion - it can be joy or sadness. Artisits often reflect on personal experiences in their lyrics to tell a story about a time in their life, or illustrate a viewpoint or opinion that they have. Where the artist spends their youth often shapes them as a person and a musician and is refered to in their songs. Music and environment fuse together to create one unique moment. In this case, R&B and Brooklyn blend to create Urban Vinyl Productions‘ luxury skybox. The space reflects the architecture of the famous Brownstone homes in Brooklyn, acknowledges the grid street plan of NYC. The furnishings and atmosphere of the space simulates the rhythmic sounds and smooth style of R&B.

THE CITY AND THE MUSIC Brownstone homes are very common in Brooklyn and I used many elements of their construction in my design to represent the community. The floor plans of these homes are stacked according to purpose, so in this plan, working areas (kitchen, conference room) and relaxing areas (entertainment space, bedroom suite)are stacked on top of each other. Sleek and smooth finishes are used to represent the quality of R&B music.

GLOBAL BALADI

Hospitality | Spring 2015

A client is opening an upscale restaurant to be located in the heart of Brooklyn, NY. Using global design approaches as inspiration I have created a unique guest experience that supports basic human needs (i.e. social interaction, privacy, territoriality, aesthetic enrichment, etc.) and attracts customers of the culturally diverse community. The client has contemporary taste, and the design reflects a fresh interpretation of global design approaches rather than mimic a particular style. My concept draws inspiration from the flow and movement of the popular Middle Eastern dance, Raqs Baladi, to create a tangible environment for people to inhabit. This traditional Middle Eastern dance is vibrant, rhythmic, and grounded. The restaurant will allow guests to experience the fluid movement of Baladi from every direction, as if the dance is taking place all around them. “Architecture and dance share the same language of shape and form - both drawing on texture, color, and rhythm, both manipulating solid and space to define themselves.“ -dancingstrong.com 10

MOVEMENT OF DANCE The wall and ceiling panels are constructed from GFRG (glass fiber reinforced gypsum), which is a product that can be cast into any shape. It is extremely lightweight, durable, and it is easy to install. It is typically used for organic forms and is a good choice for LEED projects, as it is made from post consumer recycled materials.

HIGHLINE HOTEL Hospitality | Spring 2014

By repurposing an existing warehouse building adjacent to The Highline in New York City, I created the public portion of a boutique hotel that celebrates the public park in Manhattan. Several program areas, such as a lobby/reception area, restaurant, restrooms, a gym, lounge, conference room, and business center were required to be located within the first two floors of the hotel. My concept for this project was to interwind natural elements with man made developments. Throughout time, humans have covered nature up with their man made environments. However, in some cases nature has been found re-emerging from industrial developments. The Highline is a great example of nature peeking through the industrialization and development of New York City.

INTERTWINED ELEMENTS I represented an intertwining of elements through many forms in The Highline Hotel. By disregarding the use of walls and instead using a theme of wooden slats held together with metal rods throughout the project, I left the space very transparent and promoted unity between program areas. Using contrasting natural and industrial finishes in the space helped create a visual intertwining of nature and city. Materials and finishes such as metal, glass, and lightbulbs contrasted plants, wood, and soft fabrics but came together to represent the relationship between The Highline and New York City. 16
