Kilig Cafe is located outside of the Student Union in San Jose State University. The simplicity of the form creates shade perfect for an outdoor setting. Based on prior speculations, students spend most of their time indoors and this form encourages them to dine outside.

Kilig Cafe is inspired by the Nipa houses in the Philippines. Nipa houses provide an airy atmosphere due to minimal roofing. Many of the locals enjoy eating cultural delicacies outdoors. Our goal is to introduce a new taste to the students of SJSU.

The bamboo wood is layerd in between the straw material to ensure a strong structure The dome is hollow thus providing shade and shelter
A local food truck of Filipino cusine provides the fresh food. Students then eat outside and utilize the space to their enjoyment.

STRUCTURE + MATERIALS The inspired Nipa Huts are structured with only two materials, bamboo and straw. The same choice in materials was applied to Kilig, the bamboo represents the strong and solid form of the structure and the straw is kept light for an airy roof.

Kilig Cafe will provide students and faculty with experience with eating as a whole and as a community. The act of sharing a table will enable communal dining.
