When you’re a Pioneer, you’re part of a diverse and vibrant campus experience
arietta College traces its beginnings to the establishment of the Muskingum Academy, which was founded by pioneer settlers in 1797, in Marietta, Ohio. The Academy became the first institute of higher education in the Northwest Territory. In 1835, Marietta College received its charter from the State of Ohio to offer college-level degrees. As a result, 175 years later, Marietta College now includes more than 40 buildings over 90 acres located two blocks from downtown Marietta. Marietta College is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational, contemporary liberal arts college. As an institution of higher education, Marietta College seeks to prepare highly qualified graduates through its educational programs. Consistently ranked by U. S. News and World Report among the best liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, Marietta has attained national recognition for many of its programs, including studies in leadership education. The faculty at Marietta College are one of the school’s best assets. “Teaching is my calling, not my job,” says Dr. Mabry O’Donnell, professor of communication and media studies. “I enjoy seeing the changes students make over the course of their academic careers.”

A Few Notable Marietta College Alums
The fall enrollment of the College was 1,450, including students from 40 states and 10 countries. The male-to-female ratio is nearly 50:50, and the student-tofaculty ratio is 13:1. The community of Marietta, Ohio, was settled in 1788 by Revolutionary War veterans and became the first settlement of the Northwest Territory. Now a city of 14,000, Marietta saw its greatest growth during the oil boom of the late 19th century. Still, Marietta has retained a particular pioneer spirit of independence and outward New England charm. Its historical significance also makes Marietta a popular location for tourists around the country.

Pioneers feature nine lettermen in 2010-11
F
ourth-year Head Coach Jill Meiring is continuing to rebuild the foundation for the Marietta College women’s basketball program in 2010-11. The expected return of nine letterwinners and the arrival of eight newcomers have the young Pioneers optimistic that the building blocks for success are beginning to settle into place. Coach Meiring’s squad will remain bottom-heavy in terms of class makeup and feature one senior, three juniors, seven sophomores and six freshmen. The Pioneers, who have three starters back, retained 85 percent of their scoring, 76 percent of their rebounding and 62 percent of their minutes played from a year ago. Sophomore All-Ohio Athletic Conference second team standout Aleisha Guiler will once again be the focus of the offense after averaging nearly a double-double as a freshman. Guiler ranked third in scoring, first in rebounding and second in free throw

percentage among all OAC players in 2009-10. Senior Mallory Hoff, in her second year with the program, joins Guiler as a returning starter in the paint. Junior Lizz Wilson gives Marietta three post players with valuable starting experience, while sophomores Chelsea Clyde, Danielle Lang and Kyle Sheridan also return as lettermen in the frontcourt. Junior wing Rachel Jones is Marietta’s lone starter returning to the backcourt. Sophomore letterwinners Chelsea Doutt and Brittany Metcalf both saw extended time on the floor as the team’s point guard and will be asked to play larger roles in the offense this season. Marietta opens its season at the Allegheny Tip-off Tournament Nov. 19-20. The Pioneers will host the 26th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot Nov. 27-28 before beginning OAC play at home against Muskingum on Dec. 1.

Freshman Angela Sipes will also compete for minutes at the point in 2010-11. Wing: Junior Rachel Jones will lead a young group of twoguards and three-guards this season. The two-year letterman has averaged 7.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 1.1 assists and 1.2 steals in 43 career games. Meiring, a former Denison University two-sport standout and Transylvania University assistant coach, has dedicated herself to helping the Pioneers improve each day that they take the floor, which will lay the foundation for the programs success. “Building the Foundation was the motto for last season’s team and it will carry over to this year’s squad,” Meiring said. “We feel that with a solid foundation of hard work, strong fundamentals and fierce energy and enthusiasm, we can be successful in the OAC.” Meiring, the 11th coach in the program’s 34-year history, had been the assistant basketball coach at Transylvania, in Lexington, Kentucky, since 2001. I’m excited to see this year’s team in action.” Meiring lives in Marietta.
Assistant Coaches
A new face joins Meiring in 2010-11
Stacia Shrider, a 2008 graduate of Baldwin-Wallace College, enters her first season as the assistant basketball coach at Marietta College in 2010-11. “I’m very excited to welcome Stacia to our staff,” Head Coach Jill Meiring said. “She was a great player within the Ohio Athletic Conference and knows what it takes to win. I believe she will be a great asset to our program.” Shrider joins the Pioneers after spending the last two seasons as a graduate assistant on the staff at Heidelberg University, where she focused on post development, scheduling and practice planning. A four-year letter winner and two-year captain for the Yellow Jackets, Shrider helped lead Baldwin-Wallace to 90+ wins and an Elite 8 finish in the NCAA Tournament during her playing career. She currently stands eighth on the school’s all-time rebounding list. Shrider earned both All-OAC honorable mention and Academic All-OAC in 2008. “I’m very excited to have the opportunity to return to my hometown and become a part of the Marietta College family,” Shrider said. “I look forward to working with Coach Meiring and the women’s basketball program.” A Warren High School graduate and native of Marietta, Ohio, Shrider earned a Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Baldwin-Wallace in 2008. OAC Basketball
H
The Ohio Athletic Conference , the best D-III conference in the nation
istory has shown that the Ohio Athletic Conference ranks near the top when it comes to high-quality NCAA Division III basketball, as each year the OAC produces some of the top programs. Wilmington’s national championship in 2003-04 speaks volumes about the caliber of play the 10 OAC institutions face every night. The Quakers finished behind Baldwin-Wallace and Capital and were tied with Otterbein for second during the regular season, but captured the OAC Tournament championships to advance to the regional and national levels. OAC Tournament Champion Mount Union carried the league’s banner all of the way to the Round of 16 in 2009-10 NCAA Tournament. The OAC had two teams earn bids to the NCAA Tournament, as both OAC Champion Capital and Baldwin-Wallace represented the league in 2008-09. The Crusaders fell in the first round, while the Yellow Jackets posted a first round victory for the Conference before ending their season with a loss in the second round. OAC Champion Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2007-08. The Yellow Jackets opened the tournament with win bowing out in round two. The Quakers fell by one point in their first round game. Wilmington earned the OAC’s lone NCAA Tournament berth in 2006-07, making it to the second round. The 2009-10 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount Union football program completed its fourth straight undefeated regular-season, while making its 13th overall Stagg Bowl appearance. The Ohio Northern volleyball team made its 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Otterbein women’s soccer team advanced the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. Wilmington’s Callen Martin won the indoor 55-meter dash national title (6.98). Martin also became just the third NCAA Division III woman to run a sub-seven second 55-meter dash. Ohio Northern wrestler Luke Miller claimed the national title in the 157-pound weight class. The Mount Union women’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Championship. The Heidelberg baseball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III World series, while the Ohio Northern softball team advanced to the regional finals of the NCAA Tournament. Individually, the Conference was represented by over 60 AllAmericans. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and national coaching honors. The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, University of Mount Union, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein University and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school on July 1, 2000. In the OAC’s first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference champion was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The Conference currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.

Ban Johnson Arena

Ban Johnson Arena
2002 renovations have made this facility one of the best in Ohio
an Johnson Arena has been a part of Marietta College for more than seven decades and now has a new look. Ban Johnson, the man, has long been an important facet of Marietta College’s history and to sports in
America. Johnson, who attended the old Marietta Academy as well as Marietta College, was a member of the Class of 1887, but left school to pursue a career in sports writing in the Cincinnati area. At the age of 30, he became a very demanding commissioner of baseball’s Western League, a minor league baseball association in the midwest. Because of Johnson and the league’s success, the league later became today’s American League of Major League Baseball. Johnson served as its first president. Johnson was one of the most influential people in baseball. In his years as the league’s president, he transformed a small minor league into a division that outdrew the established National League in just two years. After Johnson’s retirement from the American League he stayed active in boys leagues, Mexican baseball and Marietta College. The former baseball executive contributed many thousands of dollars to Marietta that helped the College through some difficult times in the early 1920s. In 1925, Ban Johnson received an honorary degree from Marietta College. As noted in the trustee minutes of a meeting in 1925: “Byron Bancroft Johnson, is voted a degree of Bachelor of Arts, because of his special service to the college, since leaving the school.’’ In the fall of 1927, construction began on the Field House on the Marietta College campus, largely because of Ban Johnson’s generosity. The financial support came mainly from Johnson, but Frank (Duke) Hayes, a basketball coach and athletic director at Marietta College, assisted with the fund raising and saw the project through to completion.
The first athletic event held in Ban Johnson Field House took place on Dec. 19, 1929. The Pioneers’ basketball team kept the game close, but lost 22-17 to Ohio Athletic Conference nemesis Muskingum. In 1974, an addition was constructed on the south end of the field house and housed racquetball courts, locker rooms, a fitness center and storage. In August 2001, that south end was demolished as part of the plans for a new recreation center that was added on to Ban Johnson Field House. The Field House itself has undergone renovations and was opened December 28, 2002, when the men’s basketball team hosted the 32nd Annual Shrine Tournament. In addition to the renovated 54,000 square foot Ban Johnson Field House, which includes new fitness center and weight room, an 84,000 square foot recreation center, opened in January of 2003. The Dyson Baudo Recreation Center houses a 200-meter competition track circumscribing four all-purpose courts, as well as two racquetball courts, an ergometer training room, and the Sports Medicine Department on the lower level. The Dyson Baudo Recreation Center was made possible thanks to a $10 million commitment from Laura Baudo Sillerman and Robert F.X. Sillerman, through their Tomorrow Foundation and from the Dyson Foundation on behalf of Robert R. Dyson and his wife Emilie B. Dyson and the directors of the Dyson Foundation. Ms. Sillerman and Mr. Dyson were classmates in the Marietta College graduating class of 1968. In presenting the gift to President Scott, the donors reflected, “Two members of one class came together as a tribute to the way in which Marietta College joined so many of us for life.”

The Pioneers, who featured 13 newcomers on its 16-person team, earned their first win of the season in game three when sophomore wing Rachel Jones poured 23 points from the outside and junior post Mallory Hoff scored 22 points inside to lead Marietta to a 76-69 win over Oberlin in the first round of the 25th annual Jim Meagle Turkey Shoot. A day later, Tournament MVP freshman post Aleisha Guiler paced all players with 19 points and 13 rebounds to help the Pioneers defeat Mount St. Joseph 79-69 and win their 12th overall Turkey Shoot crown but first since 2003. It was eight games before Marietta celebrated its third and final victory of the season. Guiler once again carried the team on her back with a then-career high 26 points and 16 rebounds in a 70-66 win at Muskingum. Senior wing Whitney Swain and Jones both contributed 12 points in the win. The Ohio Athletic Conference coaches recognized Guiler’s effort by naming the freshman All-OAC second team. The standout averaged 18.6 points and 9.5 rebounds in 19
games before missing the final three weeks with an injury. Guiler led league in rebounding, ranked second in free throw percentage and finished third in scoring. She also ranked fourth in blocks and tenth in steals. Swain, the lone senior and team captain, earned Academic All-OAC honors in 2009-10. The starter averaged a career-best 10.5 points, which ranked second on the team. She also added 4.3 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 1.8 assists in 25 games. Jones, Hoff and freshman point guard Heather Blair rounded the Pioneers’ regular starting five and posted solid numbers throughout the season. Jones averaged 9.3 points and 1.6 steals, Hoff averaged 6.9 points and 5.9 rebounds and Blair averaged 5.4 points 2.0 assists. Sophomore post Lizz Wilson and freshmen guards Chelsea Doutt and Kodi Brenner also made valuable contributions during their time on the floor in 2009-10..

2010-11 Pioneers look to make their own history
ore than three decades ago, a group of about 20 women gathered in Ban Johnson Field House and formed the first women’s basketball team at Marietta College. Gone are the borrowed uniforms, knee-high socks and jerseys with collars and sleeves. The early days were for players like Leslye Robinson and coaches like Violet LeClair. Today, those two are part of the Marietta College Hall of Fame. Back in the early 1970s, those were just two of the women battling for respect. Victories were difficult to come by as the Pioneers competed against bigger schools like Toledo, Ohio State and Ohio. Still, it managed to be tons of fun for the competitors. Margaret Ross, who was Robinson’s presenter at the 1997 Hall of Fame inductions, admires Robinson and all the early players for what they brought to Marietta College. “She came to play athletics here in less than an ideal situation. All Pioneer women athletes who followed owe her a debt of gratitude.” When you talk about LeClair, a great winning percentage does not come to mind. What does stand out is how she remained positive during the formative years and helped the Pioneer program grow. In 1974-75, LeClair coached the Pioneers to their second-best season with a 9-4 record. Following her final season in 1978-79, Ruth Ramonis coached Marietta for one year. Then Debbie Lazorik took over in 1980-81. Lazorik is Marietta’s winningest coach with 131 victories during her 12 years as head coach. Lazorik led the Pioneers to their greatest season ever in 1989-90 as Marietta tallied a 20-7 (.741) mark. That 1989-90 team boasted arguably the greatest player to ever play at Marietta College, and possibly in the Ohio Athletic Conference. Cathy Clark (1986-90) holds nearly every record at Marietta College and was inducted into the college’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 2001. She scored 2,311 career points, the most in OAC history. Clark has the Marietta College records for points in a season (636) and a game (42). In all, Clark has 15 Marietta College records. During her four years at Marietta College, Clark helped the Pioneers amass a 62-44 record (.585). Clark was not the only standout for the Pioneers during the late 1980s. Kim Brown (1986-89), who scored 1,568 points, was a dangerous scoring threat from anywhere on the court. She was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002. As Clark was leaving, another Hall of Fame player was just beginning her Pioneer career. Lisa Wagner (1990-93) was Marietta’s first true post player. After four years at Marietta, Wagner, inducted in 2005, had 1,818 points, second-best at Marietta and fifth-best in the Conference. Lazorik left coaching after the 1990-91 season to become Marietta’s full-time athletics director. Toni Roesch, an assistant of Lazorik’s, coached Mari-
etta for one season and went 6-19. She was replaced with Suzanne Helfant, a former standout player at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa., who headed up the Pioneer squad for the next three seasons. Helfant went 34-43 (.442) during her time at Marietta. Her final season, 1994-95, was her best as the Pioneers went 13-12. With her heart still in the North Coast Athletic Conference, Helfant departed before the 1995-96 season for Kenyon. Because of Helfant’s late decision, Lazorik was thrust onto the court again. She guided the Pioneers to a 9-17 record and a victory in the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament. While Lazorik enjoyed coaching again, her duties as athletics director were too great for her to remain as the Pioneers’ coach, so Lazorik turned the program over to Annamarie Wyant. Wyant coached the Pioneers for four seasons. Her final season, 1999-2000, was her best with the Pioneers as they went 9-16. Wyant went 26-73 (.351) during her four years at Marietta. James Stutzman, the first male coach in Marietta College women’s basketball history, took over in 2000-01. Stutzman compiled a three-year mark of 24-52. He left after the 2002-03 season to coach at an Ohio high school. Stutzman’s assistant Vicki Giffin took over for three seasons from 2003-06, before veteran coach Ted Eskildsen was hired to lead the Pioneers in 2006-07. The Pioneers are now under the control of Jill Meiring, who will look to bring stability to the team and help build it into a winning program.

Marietta Administration A new era began at Marietta College on July 15, 2000 when Dr. Jean A. Scott became the 17th President of the College. She is the first female president at Marietta College. “Jean Scott brings a well-rooted appreciation of liberal arts colleges and how they can prepare students for all aspects of life and work,” former Board of Trustees Chair Timothy O. Cooper said. “That is a core value, perhaps the core of Marietta College, and Dr. Scott will help us achieve that and other aspects of our vision.” Most recently, Scott was president of Bradford College, in Haverhill, Mass. Scott graduated with a major in history from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond where she was elected Phi Beta Kappa and earned her A.B. degree in 1968. She then attended Harvard University and received her M.A. in history in 1969 and her Ph.D. in history in 1974. “I am very excited at the opportunity to lead the college with the rich traditions and bright future that Marietta enjoys,” Scott said. “It’s especially appealing to take on this challenge when the college is reaffirming its commitment to liberal arts education and what that means in the early 21st century. I am confident we can move the College to the next level of excellence in serving our students, the region and the nation.” Since Scott’s arrival at Marietta the campus has grown to include many new buildings and facilities, enriching the educational experience for all of its students.
Athletics Director, Larry Hiser
Larry Hiser joined Marietta College in March of 2008. He oversees a NCAA Division III athletics program with 18 varsity sports and the College’s recreation and intramural programs and facilities. Prior to joining Marietta, Hiser was the Director of Athletics and Head Baseball Coach at Endicott College in Beverly, Mass., from 1995-2008. Under his watch the Endicott teams won 37 conference championships and participated in 47 NCAA or ECAC tournaments. His baseball teams averaged over 20 wins per year in 13 seasons and won five league championships and one ECAC championship. Endicott also successfully launched new programs for equestrian, lacrosse and football, while improving its facilities that now rank among the finest in New England. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Ohio Northern University in 1987, where he was an all-conference shortstop on the Polar Bears baseball team. He went on to earn a Master of Science in Physical Education/Athletic Administration from Springfield College in Massachusetts, where he was a graduate assistant. He joined Endicott College in the fall of 1994 as the Gulls’ first baseball and basketball coach. The Oregon, Ohio, native is married to the former Susan Chick (of Williamstown, Mass.).
