“Time-Honored Marietta” Time-honored Marietta, Thy walls to us are dear. Oh! How can we forget thee, Or the times that we’ve spent here? Thy name we’ll ever cherish, And for thy banner fight, Nor ever let it perish— The Navy Blue and White!
Turner (MC 1901)/Tannenbaum Gladly do we sing thy praises And of thy heroes tell— How many brave hearts struggled Because they loved thee well. ’Twill be our firm endeavor To stand up for the right, Protect, and keep thee ever, O Navy Blue and White!

Dr. Joseph W. Bruno
Dr. Joseph W. Bruno, a native of Chicago, became Marietta College’s eighteenth president on July 1, 2012, after 28 years in faculty and administrative roles at Wesleyan University in Middletown, Conn. Since joining the faculty of Wesleyan in 1984, Dr. Bruno has served in different leadership roles, including the Chair of the Chemistry Department, Dean of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, President of the university’s Gamma of Connecticut chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. He has also served as Faculty Chair of the Tenure and Promotion Committee, led ongoing strategic planning for the university and, with the Chief Financial Officer, was an advisor to Wesleyan’s President on all budgetary matters. He has taught introductory chemistry, organic chemistry, advanced electives in inorganic and organometallic chemistry, and several levels of laboratory courses. While at Wesleyan, he developed an organometallic chemistry research program and authored more than 60 publications and patents, most of which were coauthored with students he mentored in his lab. Dr. Bruno received his undergraduate education from Augustana College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. He continued his education at Northwestern University, where he earned the Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1983 while also holding a thesis parts appointment at Argonne National Laboratory in 1982. He also served as a postdoctoral researcher at Indiana University prior to joining the faculty at Wesleyan University. Dr. Bruno is married to Diane, a human resources professional. They have one daughter, Lisa, a 2009 graduate of Mount Holyoke College who is a development associate at Read Alliance, a non-profit foundation that focuses on improving the academic skills of children in New York City neighborhoods.
Marietta College
As true pioneers of the Northwest Territory began surveying the land at the convergence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, they envisioned it to be the perfect setting for a picturesque city as well as for a quality college. The roots of Marietta College reach back to 1797, when it was known as the Muskingum Academy. Since receiving its charter from the state of Ohio in 1835, Marietta has continued to mature into one of the finest small, contemporary liberal arts colleges in the Midwest. U.S. News & World Report, The Princeton Review and Forbes.com consistently rank Marietta among the best small, liberal arts colleges in the nation. The College offers its more than 1,400 undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue 44 majors, 52 minors and five pre-professional programs, which prepare students for careers in dentistry, law, medicine and veterinary medicine. Marietta also has a 3-2 binary engineering program and graduate programs in Psychology and Physician Assistant Studies. Marietta College’s mission is to provide students with an integrated, multidisciplinary approach to critical analysis, problem solving and leadership skills so they are capable of utilizing that knowledge to affect positive change. The education provided by the College is based on seven core values, which include providing a liberal arts foundation to students, providing in-depth programs of study, strengthening its global perspective and diversity, preparing students for the world of work, fostering a dynamic community on campus and beyond, creating opportunities for students to become leaders and being service-minded.

Academic Regalia
On this solemn and festive occasion, many of the participants appear in the full-dress uniform of the academic world — gowns, caps and hoods similar to the garb of the students and teachers of the earliest universities of Europe in the Middle Ages, particularly Oxford. That university was founded in the 12th century; its early chancellors were representatives of the bishop. Because of the close connection between the university and the church, students and faculty wore clerical garb. From these medieval cassock-like garments, American academic dress is derived, and in 1895 representatives of American schools codified standards of academic dress. Today, the academic Costume Code of the American Council on Education prescribes color, shape and texture of the academic costume. The “mortarboard” cap came into use during the 16th century, though there are differing opinions on its origin. Some say it came into use because its square, flat, rigid surface protected the skulls of riotous young scholars from objects dropped from the windows of irate townspeople. Others say it is square like a scholar’s books; that it was derived from the master workman’s mortarboard; or that it was patterned after the quadrangular shape of the Oxford campus. The color of the tassel is the distinguishing feature of the cap. It is black for the holders of the bachelor’s and master’s degrees, and may be gold for doctorate degrees and the governing officers of educational institutions. Typically, a participant in an academic procession wears the costume appropriate to the highest degree he or she holds. There are differences in cut and fabric of the gown that offer clues to the degree. The bachelor’s gown is always black and has pointed sleeves. The wearer of the master’s gown is literally out at the elbows; the sleeve is cut so that its lower part hangs behind the forearm. The doctorate gown is sometimes in institutional color and is trimmed with velvet panels down the front and on the sleeves. The graduate and doctorate hood is a non-functioning vestige of the cowl of monks. A doctorate hood is longer and has a wider border than a master’s. The lining of hoods is in the color or colors of the institution conferring the degree. The color of the velvet border indicates the subject to which the degree pertains, indicated in the key below. The official Marietta College colors are navy blue and white.
