PRACTICAL
Stop us if you’ve heard this before: “there’s no value in a liberal arts education”
PI NEERING THE L BERAL RTS We beg to differ. It’s the 21st century.
IT’S JUST COMMON SENSE
Employers want their staff to know the ins and outs of their unique industry. But they also value well-rounded individuals who think independently and solve problems, especially in management and top-level positions. At Marietta, you’ll get both.
Marietta ranked seventh in the nation (and ahead of every Ivy League school) on the Brookings “Common Sense” list, which rates colleges on the increase in their graduates’ earning potential.
Marietta’s unique approach to the liberal arts truly equips you with the tools you need to turn your passions into paychecks. Start by studying across disciplines, broadening your knowledge and gaining essential skills like communicating, thinking analytically and problem solving. As you progress in your academic program, you’ll learn the technical skills to advance in your chosen field, from leaders in the industry—Marietta faculty. Top employers all over the country consider such skill sets indispensable—and it shows in the organizations that employ Marietta graduates, such as NASA, IBM, Ernst & Young, NBC, the CIA and Los Alamos National Laboratory. At Marietta, you’ll have the leverage to choose your employer, the technical skills to advance quickly, the insight to succeed in upperlevel positions and the well-rounded academic foundation to thrive in multiple careers—for far less than you’d expect.

Marietta ranks in the top 25 percent in the nation in College Factual’s “Best Colleges for the Money” category.
ENTREPRENEUR: FANCY WORD FOR PIONEER. Win the PioBiz competition and you’ll earn $10,000 toward your new business’ startup expenses—while you’re still in school. Or join our PioPitch program, which brings together Marietta students and local entrepreneurs to present their ideas and form potential business partnerships. Even our library buzzes with activity. And these students aren’t just finalizing their Friday night plans. They’re investigating thesis topics, practicing presentations, tossing around ideas for new business ventures. This entrepreneurial spirit drives us forward, motivating students to turn what they care about into a career. Take Ashley Klopfenstein, who earned money during her freshman year in the PioBiz competition with a business plan that matches talented high schoolers with local businesses in need of social media and website services through paid, contracted work. MARIETTA STUDENTS ASK THE QUESTION: “HOW CAN I TAKE WHAT I’M LEARNING AND MAKE THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE?” AND THEN THEY DO.
HARDWORKING. DRIVEN. INDEPENDENT. BOLD. ADVENTUROUS. CONNECTED. CREATIVE. INSPIRING. SOUND LIKE YOU? GOOD, YOU’LL FEEL RIGHT AT HOME.
MARIE TA’S A RETTY QUIET TO N. Unless it’s game day. During basketball games, Marietta students rock Ban Johnson Arena, better known as the BanJo, which consistently ranks in the Top 10 nationally for home attendance. You’ll get used to the noise. You might not get used to the silence that consumes the place when a Pioneer toes the free-throw line. Our 22 varsity athletic teams compete in the Ohio Athletic Conference, facing some of the top programs in NCAA Division III. More than a third of our students are studentathletes. And the rest are still athletes. That’s why they fill up all 84,000 square feet of Dyson Baudo Recreation Center: four multipurpose courts, two racquetball courts, a two-story fitness center and a climbing wall where you can hang 35 feet off the ground.

OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES PLAY ON SOME OF THE PREMIER ATHLETIC FACILITIES IN THE COUNTRY. Our most recent update? In 2016, the Lindamood-VanVoorhis Boathouse underwent $1 million in renovations, which include new locker rooms and a second-floor space with 40 ergometers overlooking the river. It’s no surprise we attract some of the top rowers in the country. Each spring break, the men’s and women’s rowing teams train on Lake Lanier in Georgia, the site of the 1996 Summer Olympics rowing competition.
MARIETTA’S BASEBALL TEAM, THE ETTA EXPRESS, HAS WON MORE GAMES (OVER 2,000) THAN ANY OTHER PROGRAM IN THE HISTORY OF THE SPORT—NOT TO MENTION THEIR SIX NATIONAL TITLES, 22 REGIONAL TITLES AND 41 NCAA TOURNAMENT APPEARANCES—ALL NCAA DIVISION III RECORDS. OH, AND SIX ETTA EXPRESS ALUMNI HAVE PLAYED IN THE MAJOR LEAGUES.

DO. TEACH.
MARIETTA FACULTY WORK. AS IN, THEY CONDUCT ONGOING RESEARCH, RUN LOCAL BUSINESSES AND NATIONWIDE ORGANIZATIONS, AND EVOKE DEEP CURIOSITY IN THEIR STUDENTS. They’re accomplished artists, renowned engineers, published authors, certified public accountants, award-winning teachers. By sharing real-world experience and behind-the-scenes insight into their industries, faculty give students unique perspectives, newfound inspiration and a big advantage in the job market. Thanks to our small class sizes, professors get to know you as an individual, allowing you to develop relationships and participate in customized lessons that encourage you to achieve your specific goals.
STUDENTS AND FACULTY COLLABORATE ON GROUNDBREAKING RESEARCH—SOMETIMES WELL INTO THE NIGHT. BECAUSE LET’S FACE IT, THE BEST DISCOVERIES AND MOST INNOVATIVE IDEAS CAN COME AT ANY TIME.
Eighty-two percent of faculty hold the highest degree in their field.

OFFICE HOURS.
HAPPY HOURS IT’S OK TO BE FRIENDS WITH YOUR PROFESSORS. THEY DO SOME PRETTY COOL STUFF. Who says mentoring is limited to office hours? Sure, you’ll meet with faculty to review exam results, but also to discuss current events, last week’s football game and favorite musicians. Grab a bite to eat at River Town Grill or sip coffee at Jeremiah’s. We promise no one will call you “teacher’s pet.” Professors become mentors who care about your life outside of the classroom. You’ll find them among the Pioneer fans cheering on the Navy Blue and White. And at commencement, they’re the proudest people in the building (aside from your parents). These life-changing relationships lead to Marietta students completing some of the most competitive internships in the country with organizations like the Dallas Cowboys, Chevron and Disney.
PETROLEUM ENGINEERING Our petro graduates earn some of the highest starting salaries in the country. We provide access to a drilling and completion fluids lab, a core fluids and analysis lab, and a natural gas lab for research. Students also conduct field studies at oil and gas wells located throughout the region. As a senior, you will work on a team in an industry-style setting, move through every technical aspect of the petroleum business, from the discovery well to waterflood installation, and address related social, economic and environmental issues.
EDUCATION Over the past several years, our education students have achieved a 100-percent job placement rate. Schools turn to Marietta when looking for new teachers, because our students consistently outperform the national averages on state license exams. Teacher candidates work in real classrooms as early as their freshman year and have the option to enhance their skills and opportunities by adding our Teacher Leadership Certificate. All of our nationally recognized programs are accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
ATHLETIC TRAINING Marietta’s athletic training program was one of the first in the nation to be accredited as a full major, and successful graduates are qualified to sit for the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education’s (CAATE) Board of Certification exam. Almost every one of our graduates passes the first time, becoming certified athletic trainers. Marietta students have interned for Disney’s Wide World of Sports, International Gymnastics Camp, University of Notre Dame and semipro football teams.
ENGINEERING DUAL DEGREE Get the best of both worlds. Start with three years at Marietta, where you’ll focus your studies on applied physics, mathematics, chemistry or biology, in addition to a core liberal arts curriculum and general engineering and science courses. Then, complete your engineering requirements over the next two years at one of our four partner schools: Case Western Reserve University, Columbia University, Washington University in St. Louis or West Virginia University. Once you complete both programs, you earn a Bachelor of Science from Marietta College in Applied Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry or Biology, and an engineering degree from our partner school.
A SAMPLIN OF W AT W DO BEST. No wonder they call us an “Ivy of the Midwest.” PHI BETA KAPPA Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest academic honor society and is widely considered the most prestigious honor society in the nation. Phi Beta Kappa delivers one-of-a-kind networking opportunities for our students. When Marietta started the 16th chapter in the country in 1860, it joined members William & Mary, Harvard, Yale and others. Over the society’s history, 17 U.S. Presidents, 39 Supreme Court Justices and 136 Nobel laureates have been named to Phi Beta Kappa. To this day, Marietta remains a member of the society along with the best U.S. colleges and universities. MCDONOUGH LEADERSHIP PROGRAM Our nationally recognized McDonough Leadership Program instills a “service above self” mentality in talented Marietta students. Open to all freshmen and sophomores, the program offers five tracks, including three leadership certificates, our International Leadership Studies major and our Leadership Studies minor. Pioneers always lead the way.
“Before college, acting was fun. During my time at Marietta College, I learned to respect the craft and chose to make a career out of it.” –NICK GEHLFUSS ’07, ACTOR ON NBC’S “CHICAGO MED”
