N CK GE LFUSS ’07 You may recognize Nick Gehlfuss ’07 as Dr. Will Halstead from NBC’s hit show Chicago Med. At Marietta College, we remember him performing in the 24-Hour Play Festival and The Master’s Boy.

“Before college, acting was fun,” Nick said. “During my time at Marietta College, I learned how to respect the craft and chose to make a career out of it.” Nick, who was awarded the 2016 Outstanding Young Alumnus honor, has also appeared on It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Longmire, The Newsroom, The Good Wife and Royal Pains. Of course, he’s also appeared in cross-over roles on Chicago Fire and Chicago P.D.

After school, Nick moved to New York City, performing in plays and paying his dues. He has regularly told the story of taking his guitar out onto the streets to make extra money — and being able to buy a plate of spaghetti, meatballs and sausage for $1.50. Big break came on TV series Army Wives in 2010
“I’ve come a long way since then; but those days, the struggle of the beginning of everything, is where you find out what you’re made of and certainly the most interesting days,” he said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter. Nick says landing a leading role in a successful TV series is a dream come true, but it also gives him some flexibility. “I can now choose to do small plays, or take a role in a theater, and I don’t have to worry about how much money I’m getting paid,” Nick said. “I can do it because I love the part or it’s something I want to do.”

You will start on your career path by meeting one-on-one with your advisor. Our students have a career advisor who helps guide them and keep them on the right path to professional success. If you are considering law school, medical school or veterinary school, we have an advisor for each of those areas ... and our success rate in placing students is nearly 100 percent. Another important career preparation tool is experience. With hundreds of local, regional and national company contacts, the College’s Career Center will assist you in finding an internship, or even a job shadowing opportunity. The office also provides training sessions on résumé writing, interviewing skills and proper business attire and etiquette.

SUCCESS IN PETROLEUM ENGINEERING Anthony Williams ’11 Production Engineer, Conoco Phillips Houston, Texas Anthony competed in track & field for the Pioneers and earned a BS in Petroleum Engineering. Anthony completed multiple internships and secured employment with Conoco Phillips before he graduated. “Marietta was the best home away from home. I was taught to think outside of the box and was challenged on a daily basis to better myself in the classroom and on the track.”

When I was in Africa, I was working with people from 14 different countries, and they spoke different languages. Morgan Liedtke ’16 Early Childhood Education Within weeks of graduation, Morgan secured her first job as a teacher at Salem-Liberty Elementary School in Lower Salem, Ohio. JA DILS ’90 At a time when many businesses viewed marketing efforts as the exclusive domain of big corporations, Jan Dils ’90 was already thinking outside of the box. By reaching beyond the ordinary, the founder of Jan Dils, Attorneys at Law, succeeded in creating something extraordinary — something that established many of the marketing standards that are now commonplace in her field. Jan understood that building a brand was crucial to growth, and that marketing was an effective means to deliver the message of that brand to the right people at the right time. “We used TV and radio combined with our jingle. Eventually the Internet became a more important focus for us as well. Today, marketing is more targeted than ever, thanks to faster access to accurate analytics, and Internet marketing gives us the ability to measure impact in real time. In addition, we added a Social Media Specialist position this year. I would have never dreamed that 10 years ago!” Jan opened her office in Parkersburg, West Virginia, in 1994, the same year she earned her law degree from West Virginia University and passed the state’s bar exam. Her firm handles personal injury, Social Security disability and veterans’ disability claims, and has offices in Parkersburg, Charleston, Huntington, Beckley and Logan, West Virginia, and Charlotte, North Carolina. Her advice to students planning to enter law school with the eventual goal of starting their own firm begins with figuring out what they love to do, then finding a way to earn a living from it. “The best thing about being in business for myself is creating something from scratch and watching it grow. The most challenging is balancing the demands of work and home. When you are a business owner, you can’t clock out, especially with today’s technology.”

Jason Gromelski ’98 had worked at a company for nine years, trying to save enough money to open his own clinic. He had earned a degree in Sports Medicine from Marietta and completed his master’s degree at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia. He spent his last clinical rotation in Houston, being mentored by a clinician who worked with professional athletes. When his rotation was completed, he had already set a goal to open a clinic. “One of the first things I did was ask a marketing professional how to approach a new project. She told me that for a place like a medical clinic, she looked for location, so I took a map of Manhattan, opened it up and pinned out all 399 physical therapy clinics in 2008 that were in Manhattan.” In early 2008, Jason signed a lease for his first clinic, Nola Physical Therapy, P.C., which is near Rockefeller Center on West 45th Street in Midtown Manhattan. His persistence in working on his business paid off. Because of the excellent care and service Jason provides, his patients were spreading the word about his office. His knowledge of demand, and the contacts he made, led Jason to open his second location within a fitness club on Park Avenue in Manhattan. “I have a lot of patients in all sectors, and New York is a big networking town. It’s all about networking. I’m in an area with creatives, marketing execs, bankers, commercial real estate brokers, lawyers, high-net-worth individuals.” His third location is a 9,000-square-foot performance center near his Connecticut home.
