MARIETTA COLLEGE

MARIETTA COLLEGE

M

When you’re a Pioneer, you’re part of a diverse and vibrant campus experience.

arietta College traces its beginnings to the establishment of the Muskingum Academy, which was founded by pioneer settlers in 1797, in Marietta, Ohio. The Academy became the first institute of higher education in the Northwest

Territory. In 1835, Marietta College received its charter from the State of Ohio to offer college-level degrees. As a result, 175 years later, Marietta College now includes more than 40 buildings over 90 acres located two blocks from downtown Marietta. Marietta College is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational, contemporary liberal arts college. As an institution of higher education, Marietta College seeks to prepare highly qualified graduates through its educational programs. Consistently ranked by U. S. News and World Report among the best liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, Marietta has attained national recognition for many of its programs, including studies in leadership education. The fall enrollment of the College was 1,450, including students from 40 states and 10 countries. The male-to-female ratio is nearly 50:50, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1. The community of Marietta, Ohio, was settled in 1788 by Revolutionary War veterans and became the first settlement of the Northwest Territory. Now a city of 14,000, Marietta saw its greatest growth during the oil boom of the late 19th century. Still, Marietta has retained a particular pioneer spirit of independence and outward New England charm. Its historical significance also makes Marietta a popular location for tourists around the country. Marietta is a riverboat town situated at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, and many of the community’s most important celebrations and activities are associated with the rivers. Marietta is part of the Marietta-Parkersburg metropolitan area, which has a population of more than 130,000.

2010 OUTLOOK

K

OAC success is a point of emphasis again in ’10

eyed by the return of six letterwinners and four starters, the young Marietta College volleyball team looks to continue its improvement as a program and move further up the Ohio Athletic Conference standings in 2010. “Having made a great deal of progress on the court last year, it is exciting to be returning so many talented players,” fourth-year Head Coach Ray Costa said. “I think we have a nice group of incoming student-athletes that will complement our returners and allow us to once again show significant development as a program during the OAC schedule.” The junior duo of right side hitter Meredith Storey and outside hitter Alex Weissling are looking to build off two productive seasons and provide leadership on the court. Storey and Weissling combined for 478 kills and 86 total blocks, while Weissling also collected a team-best 45 service aces in 2009. Four sophomores—defensive specialist Jen Braun, middle blocker Sarah Campbell, setter Ally Jenkins and right side hitter Alex VanGundy— received valuable experience last year and are primed to make big contributions again this fall. Jenkins ran the offense and finished with 966 assists, Campbell paced the team’s net defense with 93 total blocks, while Braun ranked second on the back line with 259 digs. The team has once again set high expectations on the court, in the classroom and out in the community, all key aspects of the Marietta volleyball experience. Marietta will begin the season against visiting Carnegie Mellon (Pa.) on Sept. 1. Its annual River City Tournament will follow Sept. 3-4. The Pioneers will also compete in tournaments at Frostburg State Sept. 10-11 and DePauw Sept. 17-18. The team’s OAC opener is slated for Sept. 24 against John Carroll as part of the Pioneer Classic.

RAY COSTA

Costa begins fourth season

ay Costa, a native of Long Island, New York, begins his fourth season as Marietta College’s head volleyball coach in 2010. Costa, the 10th volleyball coach in the program’s history, has accumulated a 46-44 record during his time with the Pioneers. Under his guidance, Marietta has shown steady improvement on the court. Costa led the squad to a 12-15 record and a trip to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in his first season with the Pioneers in 2008. In his second year, the Pioneers went 16-17. In 2009, Marietta finished 1812 and once again made an appearance in the OAC Tournament. Before coming to Marietta, Costa spent three seasons as the full-time assistant coach with Washington & Lee, located in Lexington, Virginia. “This is an exciting time to be a part of the Marietta College Volleyball Program,” Costa said. “We have a great group of talented student-athletes who believe in the hard work necessary to achieve our goals. I’m looking forward to seeing our program continue to improve as that hard work pays off on and off the court.” While with Washington & Lee, the Generals posted an 89-21 record. In 2006, the squad went 28-9, was undefeated in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference and advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Tournament. Costa graduated Cum Laude with a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education—specializing in Mathematics—from York College of Pennsylvania in 2004. He served as the head coach for the Rockbridge County Juniors from 2005-07 and worked at a variety of volleyball camps over the past few summers. During his time at York, Costa played four years of club volleyball and was the manager of the women’s varsity team as a junior and senior. He acted as the club team president for three years, managing financial matters, organizing travel arrangements, scheduling practices and matches and serving as the team’s representative. Costa was a player-coach as a sophomore and senior and the head coach during his junior year. In 2004, the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) ranked the club team No. 25 in Division II. Costa, who is also the department’s compliance director, lives in Marietta.

KEVEN JOHN

K

even John begins his first season as Marietta’s assistant volleyball coach in 2010-11. “Keven brings a great deal of enthusiasm to this position,” Head Coach Ray Costa said. “His experience in running his own successful high school program and one of the larger clubs in Colorado have demonstrated his ability to teach the game to girls of all ages. Keven’s knowledge will also be a tremendous asset as we work to continue moving toward our program goals and will help each student-athlete in our program to reach her potential.” John comes to Marietta with an impressive resume of coaching experience. He most recently spent time interning with USA Volleyball. John was the varsity coach at Elbert High School in Colorado from 2006-09. During his four years, Elbert won three consecutive league championships and one district championship while also making three straight regional appearances. Prior to his stint at Elbert, John spent three years as the junior varsity coach at Ponderosa High School in Parker, Colo., and three more seasons as the varsity coach at Kiowa High School. In 1993, John began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Colorado Northwestern Community College in Rangley, Colo. He spent two years with the Spartans before making the transition to the club volleyball scene. John coached a 16-year old team for the South Area Volleyball Club in Denver, Colo., for one season. In 1997, John founded the Black Forest Volleyball Club in Englewood, Colo. He served as the Director and a club coach for eight years. John oversaw the 12-team organization, which featured 130 athletes, had 15 of his squads qualify for the Junior Olympics. John left Black Forest in 2006 to further his education at Mesa State College. He then entered the United States Sports Academy and received his Bachelor of Sports Science with an emphasis in coaching in 2010. “I am happy to join Coach Costa and the rising volleyball program at Marietta,” John Said. “I hope my coaching will add to the foundation of success created by Coach Costa and his hard-working athletes. I look forward to contributing to the program, school, and community.”

The Ohio Northern volleyball team recorded its 33rd straight winning season and made its 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Otterbein women’s soccer team advanced the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. Wilmington’s Callen Martin won the indoor 55-meter dash national title. Ohio Northern wrestler Luke Miller claimed the national title in the 157-pound weight class. The Mount Union women’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Championship. The Heidelberg baseball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III World series, while the Ohio Northern softball team advanced deep into another NCAA Tournament. Individually, the Conference was represented by over 60 All-Americans. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and national coaching honors. The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years, a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school on July 1, 2000. In the OAC’s first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference champion was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The Conference currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.

2009 REVIEW

09 REVIEW

CULTIVATING TALENTED YOUTH

M

arietta, under the leadership of third-year Head Coach Ray Costa, finished 18-12. The Pioneers went 4-5 in the OAC, which tied for sixth in the standings. They made their 14th OAC Tournament appearance and qualified for the third time in the

last four years. Marietta began the season on the road for the first time since 2002 and defeated host Carnegie Mellon 3-1. The Pioneers stretched their win streak to five by sweeping four matches at the La Roche Tournament. The squad then bounced back from three straight losses at the Hiram Tournament to win its next seven matches, including six straight at home. Four of those wins game at the River City Tournament, which Marietta won for the first time since 2006. The Pioneers began their final tune up for OAC play by splitting four matches at the Mount St. Joseph Classic. Marietta, who went a combined 16-8 in three-set and four-set matches, posted OAC victories over Otterbein, Muskingum, Baldwin-Wallace and Wilmington. As a result, the Pioneers earned the fifth seed in the OAC Tournament and ended the year with a loss to fourth-seeded Mount Union in the OAC Tournament Quarterfinals. Four single-match individual and two single-match team records fell in 2009. The Pioneers also set a new single-season team record with 327 block assists. Senior libero Becca Holzworth and freshman outside hitter Amanda Sawicki both earned All-OAC honorable mention for their efforts on the court. Holzworth and senior defensive specialist Katy Williams also received Academic AllOAC honors, while sophomore outside hitter Alex Weissling earned Academic All-OAC honorable mention. Holzworth ranked in the top 10 of the OAC in both service aces and digs in 2009. Already the school’s single-season record holder, she collected 534 digs as a senior, which ranked fourth on the Pioneers’ single-season list. The captain became the school’s all-time leader in digs and finished with 1,810 for her career, which ranked just outside the OAC’s top 10 all-time. Holzworth also finished with 167 career service aces, which placed her fourth on Marietta’s all-time list. Sawicki led Marietta’s offense with 304 kills and ranked in the top 10 among all OAC players with her 2.90 kill average. Weissling added a 2.79 kill average and paced the squad with 45 service aces, which both ranked 10th in the OAC. In addition, sophomore right side hitter Meredith Storey hit a teambest .260, which ranked ninth in the Conference, and freshman setter Ally Jenkins dished out 966 assists, which ranked third in the OAC.

BAN JOHNSON ARENA

BAN JOHNSON ARENA

B

an Johnson Arena has been a part of Marietta College for more than seven decades and got a new look recently. Ban Johnson, the man, has long been an important facet of Marietta College’s history and to sports in America. Johnson, who attended the old Marietta Academy as well as Marietta College, was a member of the Class of 1887, but left school to pursue a career in sports writing in the Cincinnati area. He later served as the first president Major League Baseball’s American League. In the fall of 1927, construction began on the Field House on the Marietta College campus, largely because of Ban Johnson’s generosity. The financial support came mainly from Johnson, but Frank (Duke) Hayes, a basketball coach and athletic director at Marietta, assisted with the fund raising and saw the project through to completion. The first athletic event held in Ban Johnson Field House took place on Dec. 19, 1929. The Pioneers’ basketball team kept the game close, but lost 22-17 to OAC nemesis Muskingum. In 1974, an addition was constructed on the south end of the field house and housed racquetball courts, locker rooms, a fitness center and storage. In August 2001, that south end was demolished as part of the plans for a new recreation center that was added on to the Field House. The Field House itself has undergone renovations and was opened Dec. 28, 2002, when the men’s basketball team hosted the Shrine Tournament. In addition to the renovated 54,000 square foot Ban Johnson Arena, which includes new fitness center and weight room, a 84,000 square foot recreation center, opened in January of 2003. The Dyson Baudo Recreation Center houses a 200-meter competition track circumscribing four allpurpose courts, as well as two racquetball courts, an ergometer training room, and the Sports Medicine Department on the lower level. The DBRC was made possible thanks to a $10 million commitment from Laura Baudo Sillerman and Robert F.X. Sillerman, through their Tomorrow Foundation and from the Dyson Foundation on behalf of Robert R. Dyson and his wife Emilie B. Dyson and the directors of the Dyson Foundation.

President, Dr. Jean A. Scott

A new era began at Marietta College on July 15, 2000, when Dr. Jean A. Scott became the 17th President of the College. She is the first female president at Marietta College. Most recently, Scott was president of Bradford College, in Haverhill, Mass. Scott graduated with a major in history from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond where she was elected Phi Beta Kappa and earned her A.B. degree in 1968. She then attended Harvard University and received her M.A. in history in 1969 and her Ph.D. in history in 1974. “I am very excited at the opportunity to lead the college with the rich traditions and bright future that Marietta enjoys,” Scott said. Since Scott’s arrival at Marietta the campus has grown to include many new buildings and facilities, enriching the educational experience for all of its students.
