MARIETTA College

M

When you’re a Pioneer, you’re part of a diverse and vibrant campus experience.

arietta College traces its beginnings to the establishment of the Muskingum Academy, which was founded by pioneer settlers in 1797, in Marietta, Ohio. The Academy became the first institute of higher education in the Northwest

Territory. In 1835, Marietta College received its charter from the State of Ohio to offer college-level degrees. As a result, 175 years later, Marietta College now includes more than 40 buildings over 90 acres located two blocks from downtown Marietta. Marietta College is a private, nonsectarian, coeducational, contemporary liberal arts college. As an institution of higher education, Marietta College seeks to prepare highly qualified graduates through its educational programs. Consistently ranked by U. S. News and World Report among the best liberal arts colleges in the Midwest, Marietta has attained national recognition for many of its programs, including studies in leadership education. The fall enrollment of the College was 1,450, including students from 40 states and 10 countries. The male-to-female ratio is nearly 50:50, and the student-to-faculty ratio is 13:1. The community of Marietta, Ohio, was settled in 1788 by Revolutionary War veterans and became the first settlement of the Northwest Territory. Now a city of 14,000, Marietta saw its greatest growth during the oil boom of the late 19th century. Still, Marietta has retained a particular pioneer spirit of independence and outward New England charm. Its historical significance also makes Marietta a popular location for tourists around the country. Marietta is a riverboat town situated at the confluence of the Ohio and Muskingum rivers, and many of the community’s most important celebrations and activities are associated with the rivers. Marietta is part of the Marietta-Parkersburg metropolitan area, which has a population of more than 130,000.

2010 Outlook

U

nder the leadership of first-year Head Coach Jen Simonetti, the Marietta College women’s soccer team will look to continue its progress as a program and make a return to the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament in 2010. “I’m extremely excited for the upcoming season,” Simonetti said. “We have a great roster of returning players, incoming freshmen able to make an impact, and a new coaching staff all looking for success this season. Our players and staff have high expectations for the fall, and after witnessing the hard work that our returners put in, and seeing our incoming freshmen play throughout the spring, I have no doubt that we will be fit and ready to compete.” Marietta anticipates the return to 12 lettermen, including seven starters, to aid Simonetti’s transition from assistant coach to head coach. Senior defender Marsha Hupp, a three-year starter, will provide leadership for the young squad on and off the field. Four juniors—midfielder Tessa Harlow, midfielder Cara Nuss, forward Christina Tirpak and defender Jennifer Wilder—and two sophomores—midfielder Erin Panczyk and defender Holly Simms—join Hupp back on the field after being regular starters in 2009. They will combine with the other young returners and the talented newcomers in an attempt to put a solid showing on the field each game. Five of the eight players to record a point are back on the pitch in 2010. Nuss led the team with 11 points and scored a team-best four goals. Tirpak dished out a team-high five assists while adding a pair of goals. Harlow added two goals and three assists. Wilder contributed a goal and assisted two others. Sims also had one assist. The Pioneers open the season against Rivier (N.H.) as part of the annual Marietta Soccer Tournament Sept. 4. They will then play either Adrian (Mich.) or Mount St. Joseph on day two Sept. 5. Marietta’s OAC opener is against visiting Baldwin-Wallace Oct. 2.

Simonetti begins first season leading the Pioneers

en Simonetti has been appointed interim head women’s soccer coach for the 2010 season. Simonetti becomes the fifth head coach in the 23-year history of the program. Simonetti was originally hired as an assistant coach for both the men’s and women’s programs in August of 2009. In addition to helping to coordinate the planning and execution of practices and games, she developed and oversaw the strength and conditioning programs for both squads and served as the primary recruiter for the women’s team. “I want to thank Mr. Hiser for the opportunity to lead the women’s program here at Marietta College, Simonetti said. “We are very fortunate to have a strong nucleus of hard working young women on the team. We will continue to dedicate ourselves to representing the College in a positive manner both on and off the field.” Simonetti brought an experienced coaching background to Marietta. Prior to joining the Pioneer program, she spent three years as an assistant with the Waynesville High School boy’s soccer team. While with the Spartans, Simonetti was named the Miami Valley Assistant Coach of the Year in 2007. Simonetti also served as the girl’s Varsity Track and Field Coach at Waynesville from 2006-09. Before Waynesville, she was the assistant for the girl’s soccer team at Bellbrook High School. In addition to her time at Waynesville and Bellbrook, Simonetti coached the Metro FC in Kettering, Ohio. She also worked as a camp clinician with various teams in the area around Dayton, Ohio, and now does the same in the Mid-Ohio Valley. Simonetti, who earned her United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “D” license in 2010, is the Girls Director of Coaching for the River Valley Soccer Club and assists with the ‘97 women’s team for West Virginia’s Olympic Development Program. Simonetti, who earned a Bachelor of Science in Pre-Physical Therapy and Exercise Science from the University Dayton in 2005, carries a solid playing resume. She was a four-year starter for Dayton from 2001-04. The defender/center midfielder helped the Flyers win four Atlantic 10 Regular Season titles and three A-10 Tournament Championships during her time on the field. As a freshman, Simonetti earned All-Atlantic10 and All-Great Lakes Region honors as Dayton made the NCAA Sweet 16. She repeated All-Atlantic 10 honors as a sophomore and earned both awards again as a senior when she was also named the A-10 Defensive Player of the Year. In addition, the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and SoccerBuzz both voted Simonetti an All-America selection in 2004. Simonetti started as an outside defender for the Cincinnati LadyHawks of the United States Women’s Soccer League in 2003. In 2008, she also participated in the USASA Elite Player Program in San Bernardino, Calif. Simonetti live in Marietta.

Scott Reed

cott Reed begins his first year with the Marietta College women’s soccer staff in 2010-11. “Scott is a great addition to our women’s soccer program,” Head Coach Jen Simonetti said. “He comes to Marietta with years of experience from the University of Toledo and various clubs. He has a wealth of knowledge to offer and the mentality and personality to work with our players and staff to improve our program as a whole. I’m very excited to have him join not only the soccer staff but Marietta’s athletics staff.” Reed joins the Pioneers after spending four of the last six seasons with the women’s soccer team at the University of Toledo. He served as a volunteer assistant coach with the program from 2004-06 and then returned as an assistant coach in 2009. During his time with Toledo, Reed gained experience in all aspects of a collegiate program and was a key part in the success of the Rockets both on the pitch and in the classroom. Between his two stints at Toledo, Reed spent a season the varsity assistant coach at St. Ursula Academy, a high school in Toledo. He was named the Northwest Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association Division I Girls Assistant Coach of the Year for his efforts in 2008. “I am very excited about the chance to work here at Marietta with Jen and the team,” Reed said. “I am looking forward to the continued success of the program and moving forward in developing a winning competitive mind set.” Reed also brings club-level experience to Marietta. He was a coach for the Toledo Futbol Academy and assisted one of its teams to victory at the State Cup Final in 2008. Reed, who holds his United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “D” License, also spent time as a coach for the Bedford Soccer Club and the Greater Toledo Futbol Club. Reed earned his Bachelor of Science in Recreation and Leisure Studies with a focus on community recreation from Toledo in 2005. He continued his education at the Toledo and received his Master’s of Arts in Recreation and Leisure Studies with a concentration in recreation administration in 2006. Ohio Athletic Conference

T

D-III’s Best Conference

he 2009-10 year proved, once again, why the OAC is one of the most prestigious Division III conferences in the country. The Mount Union football program completed its fourth straight undefeated regular-season, while making its 13th overall Stagg Bowl appearance. The Ohio Northern volleyball team recorded its 33rd straight winning season and made its 10th straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Otterbein women’s soccer team advanced the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Tournament. Wilmington’s Callen Martin won the indoor 55-meter dash national title. Ohio Northern wrestler Luke Miller claimed the national title in the 157-pound weight class. The Mount Union women’s basketball team advanced to the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Championship. The Heidelberg baseball team made its first appearance in the NCAA Division III World series, while the Ohio Northern softball team advanced deep into another NCAA Tournament. Individually, the Conference was represented by over 60 All-Americans. Academically, the OAC boasted numerous CoSIDA ESPN the Magazine Academic All-Americans, along with regional and national coaching honors. The Ohio Athletic Conference, the third oldest conference in college athletics, is predated only by the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1888) and the Big Ten (1895). The Conference is older than the World Series and even the NCAA itself and has survived two world wars, the Great Depression, the Korean War and the Vietnam Conflict. From a modest beginning of six charter members in 1902, the OAC grew to as many as 24 members in the mid-1920s. Through the years, a total of 31 colleges and universities at one time or another have been members of the OAC. Currently the Conference consists of 10 members, including Baldwin-Wallace College, Capital University, Heidelberg University, John Carroll University, Marietta College, Mount Union College, Muskingum University, Ohio Northern University, Otterbein College and Wilmington College. Wilmington became the 31st OAC member school on July 1, 2000. In the OAC’s first year of existence, 1902, the first Conference champion was crowned Case Tech won the football title with a 5-0-0 record. Outdoor track was added a year later and a third sport, cross country, became a Conference sport in 1914. More sports were steadily added to the OAC’s repertoire throughout the years, culminating in the addition of women’s sports in 1984. The Conference currently sponsors championships in 21 sports, 11 men’s and 10 women’s. The enrollments at the 10 OAC institutions range from 1,200 to 4,500. All of the schools were founded in the 19th century and have long and outstanding academic reputations. While maintaining these high academic standards, Ohio Athletic Conference athletic teams and athletes have consistently enjoyed a great deal of success on a regional and national level. The athletic competition is viewed not as an end in itself, but as an extension of the educational programs.

Marietta field

Marietta Field

M

arietta Field has long served as the home of the Marietta College men’s and women’s soccer teams. Located on the south end of campus, it was recently transformed into one of the finest, natural grass soccer complexes in the

region. The Parents Campaign for the Field Project, led by Bob and Nancy Gessner, was formed in 2004 to secure funding for the initial improvements to the soccer portion of Marietta Field, which is also home of the Pioneers’ softball complex. The facility underwent a complete renovation before the 2005 season. The College installed a new natural-grass, laser-leveled playing surface with a state-of-the-art draining and sprinkler system, as well as bleachers and a walkway connecting it to the rest of campus. It also features an adjacent field, which is used as a warm-up area and for training sessions. Remaining money from that project, as well as additional funds raised by the Pioneer Club, allowed for the addition of a press box and storage facility in the summer of 2008. These installations helped make Marietta Field on of the College’s top athletics facilities. The first competition on the new field came during the 2005 Marietta College Classic, annually held during the first weekend of September.

President, Dr. Jean A. Scott

A new era began at Marietta College on July 15, 2000, when Dr. Jean A. Scott became the 17th President of the College. She is the first female president at Marietta College. Most recently, Scott was president of Bradford College, in Haverhill, Mass. Scott graduated with a major in history from Westhampton College at the University of Richmond where she was elected Phi Beta Kappa and earned her A.B. degree in 1968. She then attended Harvard University and received her M.A. in history in 1969 and her Ph.D. in history in 1974. “I am very excited at the opportunity to lead the college with the rich traditions and bright future that Marietta enjoys,” Scott said. Since Scott’s arrival at Marietta the campus has grown to include many new buildings and facilities, enriching the educational experience for all of its students.
