MARIETTA READS! In the Spotlight On January 9, teams from each elementary school competed in MCS’s local round of the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl. All teams showed dedication by reading 16 books in preparation for the quiz bowl and initiative in stepping up to show their knowledge in a public setting.

On February 1, Dr. Emily Lembeck, Superintendent of Marietta City Schools, will be featured on Cobb TV discuss Marietta Reads! and One Book Marietta. This is one more example of this literacy initiative’s determination to reach a broad audience and unite the community in a lifelong love of literature.

Teams from A.L. Burruss and Marietta Center for Academic Achievement placed 1st and 2nd respectively. They will advance to the regional bowl at the University of West Georgia on Feb. 2.

Be sure to tune in to Channel 23 on Sunday, February 1 for The Library Show segments airing throughout the day.

MARIETTA READS! All Around Town

FLAT MARI-ETTA Each school receives a visit by Flat Mari-etta, the adorably tiny version of everyone’s favorite reading mascot. Check the website for photos of how students shared their time with her at your child’s school: February: Lockheed Hickory Hills

MARIETTA READS! and Supports Dine-out nights are a major fundraising venture for raising the funds that Marietta Reads! uses to support the various initiatives we fund in the school and the community. The most recent Zaxby’s night featuring performances from Park Street, MSGA and MHS was one of the best attended ever!

In addition to Zaxby’s, Stevi B’s has begun hosting dine-out nights to benefit Marietta Reads! at two locations: Near Town Center and on Dallas Hwy They will offer 10% to MR! for buffet, game tokens and carry out orders.

MARIETTA READS! One Book “The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind” by William Kamkwamba is an amazing, first-hand description of how one young man observed a problem in his community and worked hard to develop a creative solution. In addition to classroom explorations centered around

literature and STEM, Cobb County Public Library has also launched One Book activities. On Saturday

February 7, join friends at Charles D. Switzer Public Library at 1:00 for story telling and craft using the One Book. As you enjoy Mr. Kamkwamba’s story, ask a librarian to help with books featuring related topics: engineering, wind power, irrigation, social activism, Malawi.

March: A. L. Burruss Dunleith One Book Challenge The One Book Challenge is in full swing, with Dr. Lembeck challenging Mayor Tumlin and several teachers calling other teachers both in MCS and across the state. Schools are encouraged to create selfie walls with students challenging each other and targeting whole groups to get involved. #onebookmarietta #mariettareadsonebook #mronebookchallenge
