the hammock chair I chose this hammock design because I figured it will be the best alternative considering my student bank account, and it’s absolutely the most efficient one. And of course I love the design. I like it because it’s so simple, yet stylish, a real bohemian/Mexican feel to it, siesta time! It’s casual and gives the living room a whole new atmosphere. You can easily spice it up a little, give the chair your personal touch with a blanket and some throw pillows. I want to focus on a indoor hammock concept, more an interior design project. But since the chair is so flexible, you can use it outdoor too if wanted. Making the hammock chair isn’t exactly the projects toughest challenge, except for the fabric print, but I think I’m gonna have a lot of fun with it. I need big piece of fabric, and figure out how to print my design on the sheet. I’ve thought about the acetone/paint thinner method, where you print your design on a piece of paper, place it over the fabric face down, then apply the liquid, and the design will be transferred to the fabric, with a really cool effect. So either do that, paint it myself or send it in for professional printing. What do you think? Other than that, I only need some rope and bolts for the ceiling.

the magazine hammock Instead of just focusing on the hammock chairs, I want to design something more, something fun, in the same category. So I decided to make hammocks for magazines. Which fits the concept perfectly, since my hammock is more an inside product, and a comfortable spot to relax and read a book or a magazine. Making the hammock is pretty basic, as you can see on the drawings to the left. (Haven’t really decided which one to make, but I’m leaning towards the first idea). With the first one, I need to make a frame of either wood or steal, and two wooden sticks. Then I have to either sow or glue the fabric to the sticks. For the second one, (so much easier one) I only need the frame, again of either wood or steal, and then just use the same method as the hammock chair - tie the fabric with a rope. I have researched a couple of places where I can buy all the tools and materials I need, but if you have any tips please advise me. What I’ve found so far is some local hardware stores, that I assume (haven’t had time to actually check it out yet) have wood, steal, bolts, sandpaper and rope. So far I haven’t really found any local fabric stores who have my kind of fabric, so thought I might go to Brisbane and try my luck there.

bohema I figured out a name for my business/products. I was doing some research about hammocks in general, and realised it’s origin is Mexico/Latin America. But the hammock is also very popular in the bohemian interior style. So I thought Bohema was a perfect combo of both. My design and pattern will be inspired by both Mexican and bohemian design. I’ve started sketching couple different logos, I think I want to keep the logo quite clean and simple - only typography, no extra design elements or symbols. But I’m gonna try different solutions.

hema” on Google, two websites showed up. One called “bohema-studio”, which was some kind of fashion/ clothing site, and the other called “bohema clothing”, which is the same product. Unfortunately the first one has kind of the same logo idea I was thinking about doing. So I have to figure out something new. Other than that there were a lot of restaurants and hotels by the same name. Most of them in Poland, I think. When searching “bohema hammocks” nothing that would threaten my name showed up, so I probably should go for Bohema Hammocks, instead of just Bohema.

I have checked the name on the recommended website, ATMOSS. I searched for the exact words “bohema” and “hammock”, no results. I kept searching using different settings, but nothing showed up. When I searched “bo-

I checked domain names on www.crazydomains.com. au. I searched for “bohemahammocks” and all of the combos were available. Then I searched for just “bohema”, www.bohema.com.au was available, but not .com.

pattern design Inspired by the Mexican and bohemian culture and design, I came up with a design concept for my products. First I wanted to make patterns with pins and thread, kind of like string art, or sowing the patterns. But I realised that will take a lot of time and effort. So I figured I could draw the same idea instead. Haven’t really decided if I want to go for these patterns, I feel like I need to work with it a little more. Add some colour and see what works, and try different effects like paint or graphic. But it’s a start. I think the patterns will go really great with a clean logo, as I was talking about earlier. So far I’ve thought about printing the pattern design on the back of the hammock (facing out), and something clean like just the one symbol or maybe a cool sentence on the inside of the chair.

rope details To create an even better, more consistent design concept, I’ve thought about maybe adding some details to the rope of the product. Since I’m planning this very simple pattern design, a little fun details on the rope could be a creative and memorable thing to do. Here are some examples of how you can add some personality to rope. I really like copper and rose gold items, which are really popular at the moment. So I’ve been thinking it might be cool to grab some tape or actual copper and twist along with the original pattern in the rope. I think that could be an awesome look, and could become a design element that goes on throughout the brand and product design. Adding colour to the rope is also a cool way to spice things up a little, really like the orange example.
