DIGITAL INFORMATION CENTER / READING HALL Maria Papadopoulou / Manos Vagionakis Diploma project / NTUA / July 2012 Professors: Gyftopoulos Stavros / Kourkoulas Adreas published on greekarchitects.gr
This thesis concerns a digital media library, or else, the library in the internet era. Nowadays, technology enables us to have immediate and unrestricted access to digital information through the internet. Despite the positive aspects of this trend, however, we are pushed towards the introvert reception of information from home, which is some kind of social isolationism . But the innate tendency of humans to socialize and meet with other people makes the existence of a public space, where people of all ages and backgrounds, will be able to read, learn and work together, imperative. Therefore, the research goal of this work was to approach a new type of building which, in contrast to existing libraries (mostly introvert buildings, with an elite of researchers being their target group), would promote collegiality and social activation, while it would simultaneously take advantage of the contemporary digital media. This is achieved through transparency and the use of light as a main synthetic tool.
The building is located in Klathmonos Square, which is a point easily accessible from major road axes and public transportation of Athens. At the same time, the building distances itself from the noisy city centre, in order to provide its users with a quiet indoor environment. We focused on the objective of ensuring contact between the building and the city fabric, as well as among its users. Both the “external” and the “internal” communication (the latter being associated with an overall operational flexibility), were expressed by the desire for transparency of the building shell. The space syntax was morphologically realized through a transparent glass cube where events and constant flows take place: flows of people movement, flows of information, flows of gaze and communication. The main question, however, throughout the whole investigation, remained the existence of the information in its conventional form, the form of the typed book and how this fact would affect the activity of the building. So a second group of dinstict places was created, made mainly from concrete where precious books are kept, This area of the building represents the storage of information in the conventional sense and its also forms a group with the rest of the building’s conventional areas.

CENTER OF TRADE AND DESIGNERS IN GAZI Maria Papadopoulou/ Irini Sfakiotaki/ Vasiliki Chatzikoutouli Architectural studio 7-8 / NTUA Public service - multiple function building
The building functions as an open space market, museum and production laboratory. It icludes also a conference room, a cafeteria and a restaurant. The functions are distributed in a way that a social platform is created. The main idea represented by the building is the folding. The folding is used to capture the continuity of the flows of the uban space into the space of this small scale commercial center. As a result three main folding points are formed and a circular trail that cross through and connects them. The project’s development is between the small and the large scale, from the design concept to the materiality and the stuctural details.

HANDCRAFT LABORATORY CENTER Maria Papadopoulou / Alexios Tsitouras Architectural studio design 6 / NTUA
The project concerns a small scale public use building. The function of this building is mainly a handcraft laboratory for artistic works such as photography, sculpture, painting and jewlery fabrication. In the whole complex there is also a cafeteria and a multi - function hall. The inicial design concept is the 3D dimensional application of the grid element. Towards this direction a steel grid lookalike structure is developed in which the laboratory’s spaces are being evolved. The siting creates an internal patio which is accesible through the two entrances and constitutes the main meeting point of the handcraft laboratory center.

PRIMARY SCHOOL BUILDING Maria Papadopoulou / Alexios Tsitouras Architectural studio design 5 / NTUA Educational and cultural use building
The project concerns to the design concept development on a primary building school in the real center of the Athens city. The school is located in a very crowded region, full of blocks of flats. The main target is to create a space that functions not only as a school but also as a common or reference space for the whole neibourhood. This fact is being translated morphologically by the junction of the two different scale building parts. The open spaces of the school compex, -apart from the intern patio- as well as the ground level where there is a multifuction hall, can be used independently during a day.

* STARS OBSERVATORY Maria Papadopoulou Erato Choli X|Atelier WORKSHOP NTUAthens 2013 Introduction to Maya: Incongruency
The project consists a pure geometrical-formal exploration. The final captured geometry serves as a shelter, where someone isolated from his external environment can have some views of the sky. The structural system of this cabin or tent lookalike geometry starts from a minimum structural unit and evolves based on the mutation and aggragation organazational models. The experimentation took place in the maya environment while the inspiration for the derived abstract forms comes both from the growth - structure - geometry and the layering of crystals.

The whole system becomes adaptive to the local site features, to the flows of people and information and to the emotions involved. Its main feature is a respiration effect as an imitation of the human feeling of the anxiety while the contemporary lifestyle.

* Main aim of the workshop is the familiarization with complex associative modeling techniques and data structure concerning the grasshopper programming. The pedestrian bridge was developed through an algorithmic procedure. Due to this approach the morphology and structure definition of the bridge can be transformed and adapt to every site case.

The project is an introduction to parametric design and digital fabrication techniques. The script definition of the cave is developed in the grasshopper algorithmic desing interface. The stucture is adaptable to both its dimensions and morphology. The waffle layout is choosed due to the effect of transparency that creates while a space. The final model was produced in a laser cut machine.

HOUSING COMPLEX / CITY PARK IN CHALKIDA Maria Papadopoulou / Naya Chountala Architectural studio design 9 Urban design / NTUA
The project is actually an urban design project in the city of Chalkida. It is divided in two main design sectors. The first concerns to a housing complex region and the second concerns to a city park. The fact that the water element is really close to the region of intervention affected all the design concept. The main idea is to create a park that functions as an open trail of the city towards the sea. In this direction the housing area is located in the one side of the funnel of the park, compliting the existing urban planning system.

The main approach to the intervention in this area aims to create a pedestrian way in the place of leoforos Olgas in order to unify the archeological sites of the center of Athens. As well, the strategic focuses on the tree planting of the area and the development of a pleasant park, preserving the existing sport’s installations. The proposal includes also small scale installations along the area which function as information or exposition points, rest areas, tram way stations, sitting areas. Another important element into the scenario is the creation of a nature lookalike water pool as a reference to the riverbed of Ilisos that used to be in the location.

ARONIADIKA The project concerns the systematic analysis of the village Aroniadika, located on Kithera island which is characterised as a traditional complex of remarkable greek traditional settlements. Main aim is the identification of Aroniadika village’s distinct architectural character. The whole survey and design procedure/ represeantation was elaborated by hand drawings. The project had been evolved throughout three different phases: fieldwork and systematic mapping of the region, evaluation and classification of the collected elements, presantation of the situation from small scale drawings to large scale structure details drawings.

SEARCHING BETWEEN DANCE AND SPACE Maria Papadopoulou / Maria Aggelidou Theoritical project / lecture at NTUA / March 2012 Professors: D. Papalexopoulos / A. Stavridou published on greekarchitects.gr
Netherlands dans theater
* A narrative about space and parametric logic through contemporary dance. Russel Maliphant
Searching between dance and space… And so it is an attempt to study the notion of space, central to the practice of architecture, through the field of dance, as the dance is an event with high mobility and a practice with dominant reference to the space. The focus is on the choreography as an organizational form of the kinetic state of the human body and a process of production of space. Each dance performance observed has a unique structure function, however and various other characteristics. The investigation and segmentation of this structure leads to assumptions and conclusions about the relationships between the elements that constitute the event of the dance. In addition, there is a reference to the mental drawing tools of the choreography, through which the dance is ultimately perceived and the space is being produced. Moreover, any attempt tempts to establish everything observed from the field of dance in this of architecture.
Aggeliki Stelatou
Carol Brown
The narrative seeks, through the above, a visa for the concept of space based on the axis: fact- recording- process- structure- changing- event, that is located in the dance. The dance is treated as a force field and the choreographic work as a mixing pot of these forces, just as it happens while an architectural project. Besides, architecture is not only space and form, but is also action and event and what happens in space.
