Central Research Institute of Structural Materials “Prometey” (CRISM “Prometey”) is one of the largest scientific enterprises in Russia specializing in materials science and a recognized leader in the development of structural materials and technologies. One of the state research centers, it is a federal state unitary enterprise which activities are based on scientific research, technical and technological potential. The main direction of development is connected with creation of new highly efficient multipurpose functional materials of all classes. Highly promising work carried out in the field of structural materials is development and application of titanium alloys in marine structures intended mainly for shelf oil and metal ores production. For example, underwater vehicles used for different engineering and repair works at the bottom of the ocean; its hulls are made of a and pseudo-a-titanium alloys developed by CRISM “Prometey”.

At present CRISM “Prometey” carries out complex research for development of highstrength materials based on a +b-titanium alloys. Also CRISM “Prometey” working together with JSC Corporation “VSMPO-AVISMA” develops new innovative projects aimed at the improvement of metallurgical technologies. Weight of titanium ingots has reached the maximum equal to 17 t. Thanks to that we can make now semi-finished products huge in size and building structures with better technical and economic indices. CRISM “Prometey” prides itself that it has developed manufacturing technology and mastered the production of semi-finished products of wide range and assortment, from fine foil up to large-sized sheets, plates, forgings and seamless rolled rings.

New welding procedures (such as electronbeam welding and others) for shipbuilding structures made of titanium alloys are being developed and improved. The institute carries out a large amount of work, both research and technical, connected with supervision over building and modernization of shipyards structures: JSC “Sevmash”, JSC “Zvezdochka”, JSC “Admiralteyskie Verfi” (Shipyards) etc. The field of titanium alloys applications in ship mechanical engineering and power engineering continues to extend. Today production technology of cold-deformed pipes for different purposes (diameter since 6 mm up to 133 mm) is being mastered at Russian factories in

Glazov and Electrostal: JSC “Chepetsky Mekhanichesky Zavod (Mechanical Plant)”, JSC “Mashinostroitelny Zavod (Machinebuilding Plant”). “Prometey’s” attention is now focused at mastering pipes production (up to 300 mm in diameter) for shipbuilding and petrochemical industry as well as ribbed pipes manufacturing for highly efficient steam units of new generation. Nowadays antifriction protective nanomodified coatings could be promising direction in ship mechanical engineering. The new coatings enable titanium to be used in friction assemblies and to work in contact with other materials in corrosion media.

Antifriction coatings for friction couples made of advanced titanium materials are obtained by innovative technologies such as thermal oxidizing, detonation spraying, argon-arc and plasma cladding upon titanium alloys. As to ship power engineering a direction connected with application of titanium for floating nuclear power plants as well as for condensers and heat exchanging equipment for stationary NPP continues to develop. Along with the above mentioned activities the institute is carrying out research works to determine a possibility of titanium alloys application for reactor pressure vessels.
By this time it has been developed chemical composition and manufacturing technology of a radiation-resistant weldable titanium alloy of a required strength which provides reduction in induced activity and feasibility of metallurgical refining over 30 years after the end of operation in neutron irradiation conditions. Documentation for ingots, forged and rolled products made of the alloy is also developed. A technology of electron-beam welding of parts characterized by large thickness is developed as well. The new alloy could be used for pressure vessels of the future floating nuclear power plants.

Thus, as a result of successful scientific and engineering activities for the last decades, and due to the development of new materials and technologies, CRISM “Prometey” is still keeping its position as a world leader regarding structural titanium alloys, thus areas of its applications are considerably extended in different industries.
Application of titanium for long blades of steam-turbine plants of new generation designed and manufactured by “Silovye Machiny” (JSC “Power machines”) is one of the topical directions in power engineering. CRISM “Prometey” has developed a titanium alloy with exceptional erosion resistance based on low-alloyed a+b-alloy and technology of manufacturing of rotating last stage blades for low pressure cylinders of stationary NPS steam-turbine plants out of this alloy.
