Better Reality

Centre for Marine Simulation

Mariners say the sea only gives you one chance.

That’s reality. What if there were a place where the sea gave you all the chances you needed, to get it right?

That’s a better reality. There is no other place in the world that combines the unique North Atlantic location, world-class simulation technology, people and industry-driven expertise than the Centre for Marine Simulation at the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada.

St. John’s

Newfoundland and Labrador

welcome to north america’s

most comprehensive research and training facility for marine simulation. We have earned our place among the world’s best marine simulation facilities with a combination of advanced technology, skilled personnel and our location in one of the harshest (some say THE harshest) marine environments in the world. By creating a better reality, we can mitigate your risk on the sea. Whether you want to accelerate training, improve people performance or test equipment designs, there is no better place to get results.

We are an arm of the Fisheries and Marine Institute of Memorial University of Newfoundland, known for its applied oceans research and for producing top quality mariners. Our local, national and international partnerships also give us some unique advantages, beyond having seawater in our veins. Because of our affiliations with sources as diverse as universities, research councils, ocean technology interests, and various elements of the scientific community, our people know the ocean — and how to live and work on it — better than anyone.

Simulation

An

Unmatched Range of Services

Options designed to bring any ocean-based project to life We have the people and the technology to simulate any ocean-going vessel, environment, and situation. We can re-create the harshest or the calmest sea conditions, simulate fog, ice, hail, and gale-force winds, and model any standard or emergency procedure. With our entire suite of marine simulators, including our full-mission, full motion ship bridge simulator, we’ve brought the ocean inside, to your benefit.

Training and Simulation With our team of expert instructors and curriculum designers, we can develop customized training programs and simulations for ship operations, marine engineering or ship communications that will improve any individual’s performance. You’ll see marked results in operational efficiencies.

Waterway Risk Analysis Imagine yourself in any waterway in the world from shipping channels in the Far East to the open North Atlantic Ocean and beyond. We can put you there. If your project requires a feasibility assessment, environmental approval or even pilot training, you can save time and money at the Centre for Marine Simulation.

Equipment Testing We can help accelerate your production cycle by putting any piece of equipment to the test before it is even built. No expensive sea trials, no major cost and time investment spent co-ordinating resources. Just some of the world’s best simulation experts and technology that can move your project forward.

Ship Modeling & Geographic Database Design From a small fishing trawler to a very large crude carrier, we can model any ship or floating structure, built in accordance with accepted principles of hydrodynamics. We can build the model based on your specifications to get the results you need. Add in a location and we’re ready to set sail. To create a high fidelity real-time 3D visual for your simulation, our expert developers combine their talent and the latest technology to provide a greater interactive virtual environment.

Simulation Projects — Our Experience is our Edge From modeling the world’s roughest seas to re-enacting a vessel’s voyage, our simulation projects reveal the important information seafarers need to make informed decisions. • Simulation and Modeling of Harsh Environments

• Port Development/Vessel Operations Analysis

• Offshore Oil and Gas Operations

• Vessel Modeling and Training Development

• Ice Operations

• Voyage Re-enactment and Case Studies

• Motion Sickness Studies

• Simulator Instructor Training

The

Power of Research

Taming a sea of guesswork Sea trials are expensive. So we re-create the ocean and the technical requirements and bring them together in-house. Suddenly you are right there on-ship: learning how your new ballast system adjusts for rough seas; researching what impacts sickness and fatigue have on your people; and developing better ways to operate in ice rich environments. It’s about knowing through innovation — before you hit the waves.
