When you’re ready, you’re ready for anything. An education from the Marine Institute includes technical, hands-on training geared to equip you with exactly the right skills for your new career. MI grads are employed all over the world in their chosen fields. Browse each program page and meet some former students who’ve turned their education into satisfying careers.

Guide to Programs The Marine Institute offers a wide variety of programs that include a mix of classroom instruction and in-the-field training. Lengths of programs and entry requirements vary. A background for terms like ‘diploma’, ‘certificate’ and ‘degree’ is offered below.

Technical Session – A period of study from three to eight weeks; usually six weeks and held after the winter semester in April but, this varies by program. Semester – A period of approximately 15 weeks during which regular classes are held. Normal start dates are September, January and May. Joint Diploma of Technology/ Bachelo

Work Term – An MI-approved experiential learning opportunity included as a part of the requirements of an academic program that may require completion of a log book, report or portfolio. Sea Days – Official ‘sea days’ that qualify for Transport Canada certification and are documented by a vessel’s senior officers or crew.

TECHNICAL CERTIFICATE

Bachelor Degree – A convenient and practical opportunity that enables laddering of a diploma program and is offered online. Diploma of Technology – A three- to four-year program that offers hands-on technical sessions and the ability to complete a bachelor degree with one additional year. Joint Diploma of Technology/Bachelor of Technology – This combined program includes the academic requirements of a Diploma of Technology and a degree.

Master’s Degree – A graduate opportunity that builds on previous undergraduate-level work. Post-Graduate Certificate – An applied and practical suite of four courses aimed at providing targeted professional competencies. Advanced Diploma – A one-year graduate option that builds on a diploma or degree program and includes technical and hands-on experience as well as work term opportunities.

Technical Certificate – This hands-on educational opportunity can be completed in one year or less and includes a work term opportunity.

MI’s Stephenville location is set on Newfoundland’s beautiful west coast. Safety programs like fire rescue are centered here at the Safety and Emergency Response Training Centre (SERT). Lewisporte

MI’s Lewisporte location is centered at the ocean-going hub for Newfoundland’s northern and northwest coasts, and at the gateway to Labrador. The St. John’s International Airport is only minutes away from MI’s St. John’s campus. The St. John’s airport code is YYT.

Marine Atlantic operates a year-round super-ferry service between North Sydney, Nova Scotia and Channel-Port aux Basques, and a summer service between North Sydney and Argentia.

The Gander International Airport is 45 minutes away from the Lewisporte campus. The Gander airport code is YQX. The Deer Lake Airport is just over one hour from the Stephenville campus. The Deer Lake airport code is YDF.

Program Breaks • •

Generally speaking there is a break in mid-December between the fall and winter semesters. There is usually a short break between the winter semester and a student’s technical session. Dependent on the program, students may have a summer break. However, many of the program work terms are scheduled in the summer months, so the length of break varies by program.
