participants consider decarbonization to be a top-three priority for their business, but there are significant barriers: global targets are not sufficiently ambitious and not adequately supported by local regulation. the high cost of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) leisure passengers are reluctant to absorb the cost of lower emissions solutions; and, many within the aviation industry are skeptical about

the role of carbon offsets. The scale of the challenge is significant – pre-COVID-19, aviation produced around 1 billion tons of carbon emissions in 2019: around 3% of the world’s annual total. And yet, aviation can and has to do more when it comes to decarbonization. IATA’s 20-year growth forecast estimates global air passenger growth could be in the range of 1.5%

and 3.8%. In fact, aviation could represent up to 22% of global emissions by 2050 if demand increases as expected and other sectors decarbonize more quickly. There is broad alignment on this view across the sector. Over 90% of aviation industry leaders consider decarbonization to be a top-three priority for their business.

ndia overtakes Brazil, becomes Arab countries’ largest food supplier after 15 years. India overtook Brazil in food exports for the first time in 15 years as the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted trade flows in 2020, according to data provided by the Arab-Brazilian Chamber of Commerce. The Arab world is one of Brazil’s most important trading partners, but its distance from those markets has increased as the pandemic hit global logistics. The data pointed out that Brazil accounted for 8.15% of the total agri12

business products imported by 22 league members last year, while India captured 8.25% of that trade, ending Brazil’s 15year gain. Despite remaining competitive “from the farm gate”, Brazil lost ground to India and other exporters such as Turkey, the United States, France and Argentina amid the disruption of traditional shipping routes. According to the chamber, Brazilian shipments to Saudi Arabia that once took 30 days are now taking up to 60 days, while India’s geographical advantage allows it to send fruits, vegetables, sugar, grains and meat within a week. is

permitted. Brazil’s agricultural exports to Arabia grew only 1.4% last year to $8.17 billion. Chamber data showed that between January and October this year, total sales stood at $6.78 billion, up 5.5%. China’s push to promote its own food inventions during the pandemic also diverted some of Brazil’s trade with the Arabs. Major countries such as Saudi Arabia stepped in to boost domestic food production while looking for alternative suppliers. “This is a turning point. The Saudis are still a big buyer, but they are also a net re-exporter of food,” the chamber said in a statement.
