Dear Reader’s,
I
n 1947, when India gained Independence, the Port of Karachi went to Pakistan and the North West India was deprived of this Sea out-let. The consequent diversion of its traffic to Calcutta and Bombay was not only inconvenient and un-economical to the trade owing to the long distances involved, it also severely strained the limited resources of those ports. In order to ease this situation it was considered essential to develop another major port on the west coast of India between Karachi and Mumbai. Thus, the Port of Kandla, the sixth major port of the country, was established on the western coast between Karachi and Mumbai. It was declared as a Major Port on 8th April, 1955. The Port of Kandla is an excellent, natural and well protected port and serves as the sea-gate to the North-West India. It has a hinterland as vast as 10 lakh square kilometres which includes North Gujarat, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir. Western Uttar Pradesh and parts of Madhya Pradesh. The port has been planned in such a way, keeping in mind the future demand of cargo movement and enhancing infrastructure according to demand. Tough initially a tidal port today it is capable of handling huge capacity vessels by regular dredging activities and latest cargo handling activities. The unprecedented growth of Deendayal Port Kandla is self-explanatory. The record handling of cargo be it Wheat, Timber, salt and many more
