SUMMER 2023

AT THE HELM MARINEMAX LIFESTYLES

It’s time to celebrate longer summer days out on the water, along with another recent milestone on June 4—the 25th anniversary of MarineMax becoming a public company. In April, Bill McGill, our Executive Chairman of the Board, also celebrated his 50-year anniversary since the formation of Gulfwind Marine, which eventually became MarineMax 25 years ago. As the head of this incredible organization, I am proud to be a part of this momentous occasion and share it with you!

Although there have been many changes throughout the years, and the company has experienced a lot of growth along the way, there is one thing that has always remained persistent, and that is our mission to provide the world’s best pleasure boating experience by consistently exceeding the greatest expectations of our customers and our team members. Without our valued clientele and the rest of our boating family, we would not be where we are today. So, I give my sincerest appreciation to everyone involved throughout the years. I also encourage you to stay tuned for many fun and exciting anniversary-related happenings and festivities as we continue to celebrate.

Besides marking a quarter of a century, since our spring edition, advancement in technology is thriving within the company. In January, MarineMax started the year by completing its acquisition of Boatzon, the first fully integrated online retail platform for boats and other marinerelated products. This enhanced platform enables users to conveniently conduct the entire process of purchasing a boat online, including obtaining finance and insurance options and more. We are excited to continue to enhance customers’ buying experience overall.

Another positive gain for the company is the acquisition of Midcoast Construction Enterprises, LLC, better known as Midcoast Marine Group. This purchase allows MarineMax to maintain our marinas to our customer’s standards. Considering our growing marina portfolio, this addition has numerous benefits.

In addition to the many new boats and yachts to choose from at our showrooms nationwide, MarineMax has been on tour, displaying more vessels at annual shows, such as the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show and the Palm Beach International Boat Show. We’ve also been proud to offer support within local communities and have a lasting positive impact with annual events, such as volunteering our time and labor to help build and dedicate a home to a deserving family for the 6th year with Habitat for Humanity, participating in local beach cleanups, blood drives, and more.

As for this season, MarineMax is eager to usher in the best days to spend on the water with many educational and exciting events. From in-water boat shows, boating classes, and fishing tournaments to movie nights, exclusive Getaways!® to popular destinations, and more— there’s always something happening around the water. And inside this special anniversary edition of MarineMax Lifestyles, you will find many exciting things to do, fun facts about our history, enjoyable stories shared by some of our boating families, and highlights about our products and services. Also, we encourage you to continue to join us while we commemorate 25 memorable and successful years of being United by Water.

Until next time, stay safe, enjoy your time on the water, and thank you for your loyal support throughout this magnificent journey.

8 MarineMax Lifestyles

Starting a Legacy

Leisure | Sea Ray See how the O’Neils embrace the first-generation boating lifestyle.

The O’Neils didn’t grow up on the water. Shane and his wife, Aimee, are first-generation boaters. They purchased their first vessel, a Sea Ray SDX 270 Outboard, in 2020, slipping in just before the COVID-19 lockdown, and quickly fell in love with the boating lifestyle.

As soon as they got comfortable operating and navigating the SDX, they began to think about an upgrade. They wanted features that would help make captaining the boat easier and make it more comfortable for entertaining.

With the help of MarineMax sales consultant Patrick Roark, they identified the Sea Ray SLX 310 Outboard for their next purchase. The O’Neils christened the boat Athena Parks, the middle names of their daughter, Teagan, and son, Tristan.

“We told Patrick we were looking to upgrade. He did some digging and found us the biggest boat we could fit on our lift,” said Shane O’Neil as he laughed. “And we’ve been blown away by all the great features.”

Two of Shane’s favorites are the standard Axius Propulsion System with Mercury Joystick Piloting and the Mercury Skyhook digital anchor. The joystick makes docking a breeze, and the Skyhook feature locks in with GPS so he can enjoy the sunset without worrying about the boat drifting.

Skyhook is also a huge help in keeping the boat still while waiting for a slip at the dock. One of the features Shane was surprised he really enjoys using is the autopilot. He sets the coordinates, hits a button, and off they go.

With small children aboard, the VacuFlush head is a must, but it’s the cockpit entertainment area that gets Aimee O’Neil excited. She likes the ease of having a wet bar, refrigerator, and on-board electric grill. Pop up the

table in front of the L-shaped seating, and it’s a perfect floating picnic.

Aimee’s favorite feature, however, is the windlass anchor. She has officially retired her mad anchorthrowing skills in favor of pushing a button. It’s now effortless to moor out in Tampa Bay. And when they are done swimming at one of their favorite spots, Beer Can Island, it’s a breeze to pull up and head out.

MarineMax.com 11

The Sea Ray’s swim platform with an under mount swim ladder and grab handle is always a kidpleaser. But the lighting package on the Sea Ray impressed the O’Neil children the most. Six-year-old Teagan loves the RGB lighting package that allows her to change the lights to her favorite colors: pink and purple. Three-year-old Tristan was blown away by the bow spotlight that he can control from the cockpit via a 12-inch touchscreen display.

Shane admits the lights are a fun way to customize any outing. His family participates in many of the Tampa Bay boat parades, so whether they celebrate the Lightning with blue or the Buccaneers with red lights, Athena Parks is always appropriately festooned.

The O’Neils like to entertain on their boat too. The Sea Ray SLX 310 Outboard has an impressive entertainment system that can be controlled from the helm or a mobile device using the Sea Ray Connect app.

A state-of-the-art Fusion sound system provides a high-quality soundtrack for any excursion.

The couple recently hosted Amiee’s staff of 15 for a day out on the water. Even with a large group, Sea Ray’s luxurious seating options ensure maximum comfort for everyone on board. The boat has ample lounge space in the bow and a comfortable and roomy seating area in the stern.

The helm has twin bucket seats with flip-up bolsters, allowing the captain and co-captain to navigate the boat while enjoying the view comfortably. And if the co-captain would rather join the conversation in the stern, the seat swivels front or back. The cockpit also features an aft-facing lounger that converts to a sunpad.

Underneath all that seating is an incredible storage area big enough for beach chairs, floats, and all kinds of water toys. When it’s time to get out of the sun, a SureShade covers the boat from the cockpit to the sunpad.

Beyond boat features, the O’Neils appreciate having a boating expert on speed text whenever they need him.

“Patrick has been my guy at MarineMax since day one,” said Shane. “I reach out to him with general boating questions as well as any issues. It’s great to have an experienced boater available with just a text—especially when you are out on the water. I’ve never had a salesman who is available like that after a purchase.”

When you didn’t grow up in a boating family, having a mentor means a lot. And now Shane can pass that knowledge on to the next generation of boaters.

What To Look For When Buying A Pontoon Boat

Pontoons have gone from slow-speed cruisers to arguably the most versatile boats on the market. Here’s how to pick one that matches your needs and lifestyle.

Leisure | Pontoons
Harris Solstice 230

PPontoons came roaring out of the late 2000s to emerge as the hottest segment in the boating market. No longer just sunset cruisers, models showcased newfound performance and handling, doubled as watersports towboats, and even ventured into larger coastal waters. With bold exterior designs, ultra-plush interiors, and the latest in sound and lighting systems, they also became cutting-edge cool.

But with all these recent advancements—not to mention the seemingly endless variety of floorplans pontoon manufacturers offer—finding the right ‘toon’ can be a daunting process. Here’s what to consider when buying a pontoon, as well as suggestions to find the perfect boat for you and your family.

PONTOON VS. TRITOON

Twin tube models, or traditional pontoons, have long carried everything from your grandparents’ sunset cocktail cruise to a day on the water tubing with the kids or fishing with friends. Recent years, however, have seen a dramatic rise in the popularity of triple tube or tritoon models.

A third centrally located tube adds buoyancy and stability, allowing larger boats and greater passenger loads. Added buoyancy also enables tritoons to handle heavier, higher-horsepower engines and venture into larger bodies of water. The Harris Grand Mariner 230 is one of many crafts produced in twin and triple-tube configurations. With twin 25” diameter tubes, its capacity maxes out at 11 passengers/2,056 pounds and 200 units of horsepower. By comparison, a trio of 27” tubes increases the capacity to 13 passengers/2,874 pounds and 300 units of horsepower.

Many triple-tube configurations also produce more agile handling, allowing boats to corner with the characteristics of a V-hull. Crest’s CP3+ Performance Package increases the diameter of the center tube to enhance this trait. Bennington’s Elliptical Sport Package pairs 25” diameter round pontoon tubes with a 32” elliptically shaped center tube. The pairings result in exceptional stability, faster planning, and improved maneuverability.

That’s not to say the traditional pontoon has no place in today’s market. Twin tube boats are usually small-to-midsize, 200hpand-lower models. They excel at cruising and fishing on calmer waters but still pack enough punch to tow skiers and tubers or occasionally cross large bodies of water. Lighter, twin-tube pontoon models are also easier to tow behind a vehicle and generally less expensive in terms of the sales price and seasonal fuel costs.

MarineMax.com 15
Harris Crowne 270 Crest Classic LX Fish

FRESHWATER VS. SALTWATER

Today’s pontoon boats are also increasingly built to handle a wider variety of water conditions. Triple tube configurations, larger pontoon diameters, more robust construction techniques, and higherhorsepower engines combine to make pontoon boating in larger areas of water a reality. Experts suggest looking for pontoons with minimum wall thicknesses of at least .090” and diameters of at least 25 inches to provide adequate stability, handle the impact of larger waves and support the higherhorsepower engines (generally 150hp and above) are recommended should conditions turn unfavorable.

More robust construction techniques also help a pontoon boat handle rougher conditions. Harris’ continuous M-Brackets (attaching tubes to deck crossmembers) run the entire length of each tube to diminish torque and twist. Brands, including Premier, opts for only composite furniture frames throughout. Crest pontoons feature four separate, fully sealed chambers so that a puncture won’t compromise the boat’s seaworthiness. Bennington exclusively uses THRU-BOLT technology to attach the deck to the crossmember structure, limiting flex.

Additional features add longevity to boats used in saltwater. While aluminum pontoons aren’t susceptible to typical rust, galvanic corrosion—a chemical reaction between dissimilar metals exposed to saltwater—can cause damage. Saltwaterspecific packages add sacrificial anodes made of weaker metals like zinc to protect more valuable surfaces like aluminum or an outboard’s lower unit. Other beneficial additions include watertight electrical connectors, aluminum under-deck shielding, sealed lifting strakes, and corrosion-proof fittings and hardware.

BOATING LIFESTYLE

The types of activities you plan to enjoy on your pontoon also play a significant role, especially in terms of the floor plan and amenity selection. Cruisers may wish to optimize comfortable seating, coolers, food storage, and options like dinettes and cockpit tables. Partygoers likewise value seating but also a good sound system and mood-setting lighting packages. Anglers will want to dedicate a share of the floor plan to fishing seats, tackle and bait-prep stations, livewell, and rod storage. Watersports fans will benefit from a raised tow bar to elevate the towrope over the height of the motor, extended aft decks, and in-floor lockers that take advantage of the space in a center tube to store water toys.

And that, of course, is the true beauty of a pontoon. They offer features and combinations that seem only limited by your imagination. The Harris Crowne SL 270 has a floor plan option with a bar and barstools. Premier’s Escalante has a second-story deck—not to mention a waterslide.

How will you outfit your pontoon?

Fishing | Aquila Power Catamarans

THE AQUILA OFFSHORE LINE KEEPS GROWING

These three Molokai models are designed to make fishing and offshore adventures safer and more comfortable.

The waters surrounding Hawaii can be some of the world’s most challenging for boaters, and these harsh conditions inspired the Aquila 28 Molokai Power Catamaran. Introduced in 2022, its design resulted from a collaboration between two of the most accomplished experts on catamaran design, Kirk Clarke, who has been building catamarans in Hawaii since the 1960s, and Lex Raas, from South Africa, whose waters are similarly challenging. Raas is also President of Aquila Power Catamarans.

In addition to the original Molokai, a 28 Molokai Cuddy model was created to provide unparalleled protection from the elements and has a larger aft cockpit for watersports and other activities such as fishing, diving, and more.

Scheduled for release this fall, the Aquila 47 Molokai will be added to the lineup to give anglers the ultimate platform for offshore adventures. Each Molokai model uses its Hawaiian DNA to provide a safer and more comfortable ride in conditions that keep other fishing boats in port.

AQUILA 47 MOLOKAI

Stretching to nearly 47 feet long with a long list of standard features and capabilities not found on other cats in its class, the Aquila 47 Molokai was designed with help from a professional fishing consultant to ensure it checks all the boxes fishing purist’s demand. A luxurious cabin with a queen-size bed and yacht-like head compartment makes this a versatile vessel to make your fishing and family dreams come true.

Featuring an advanced dual-hull design with twin steps for greater speed and efficiency, along with a 1,048-gallon fuel capacity, this gives it up to 800 miles

of range with its standard power package of twin 600-horsepower Mercury Verado V12 outboards. With the option of selecting four Mercury V10 outboards totaling 1,600 horsepower, owners and their guests can have more time at destinations or far-flung fishing spots and less time commuting.

With a beam of 14 feet, 7 inches, the 47 Molokai has enormous deck space for fishing and provides room for four livewells totaling 185 gallons. It also includes two fish boxes and two coffin boxes, which amounts to 328 gallons of capacity.

Guest comfort is paramount with features such as massive individual storage

compartments and triple forward-facing lounge seating. And because of the Molokai line’s soft ride, dampened by the cushion of air created between the hulls when running, these loungers are perfect for those working on their tans while on the run.

Stadium seating for seven at the helm features four raised seats in the second row, so everyone has a great view forward. For monitoring the trolling spread, three abreast mezzanine seating overlooks the fishing cockpit. Port and starboard dive doors help land huge fish and assist guests boarding dockside or out on the water.

20 MarineMax Lifestyles

AQUILA 28 MOLOKAI

The 30-foot, 9-inch long 28 Molokai has a wide 9-foot, 8.5-inch beam that helps promote side-to-side stability. A three-sided tempered glass windshield offers excellent protection at the helm and a small gap at the top fosters air circulation. Composite stanchions rigidly support the standard hardtop and give it a custom look.

Its center console design is perfect for fishing. Just behind the luxurious twin helm seats is a 30-gallon livewell, mounted near the centerline for better balance, that has curved sides and a clear lid to help monitor bait. A pair of insulated, in-floor fish boxes and two more storage compartments exploit

the twin hulls’ depth to create extra capacity. Tackle storage is abundant. It is designed to hold Plano boxes to keep gear orderly.

Unlike many center consoles with a standing-room-only theme, plenty of comfortable seating also helps boost its entertainment quotient. At the stern, twin flip-down seat bottoms create jump seats, and in front of the center console is a doublewide seat with a tall backrest for comfort that’s perfectly angled. The front of the center console flips open to reveal a roomy head compartment, and in front, there’s a U-shaped lounge with removable seat backs that create bowrider seating.

AQUILA 28 MOLOKAI CUDDY

Sharing the same seaworthy hull as its center console counterpart, the 28 Molokai Cuddy has a helm-forward pilothouse design that is perfect for those looking to insulate themselves from harsh weather conditions. The hardtop also allows for adding an extended roof for more shade and protection from the rain. The base boat has a wide-open deck, creating the maximum space for fishing or diving activities. Owners can add a reversible seat back lounger that provides an incredible amount of storage in addition to the four drainable in-floor cargo areas, plus twin fish boxes with a massive 188-gallon capacity. A pair of concealable jump seats can be added at the stern, and

live bait enthusiasts can option a 30-gallon livewell at the stern. A cuddy cabin with a bunk is perfect for overnighting or catching a snooze during long fishing excursions. A hinged floor section is an ideal location for concealing a portable toilet.

All three Molokai models combine sporty performance with carefully considered standard features and options, allowing owners to create the ideal fishing platforms that perfectly match their lifestyles.

DECADES TOGETHER

MarineMax has helped the Buckley family make memories on the water for over two decades.

Fishing | Boston Whaler

In 1999, Kevin Buckley took his then 13-year-old son Steven to the New England Boat Show in Boston. In addition to being a fun father-son day trip, the outing was the beginning of a 24-year relationship between the Buckley family and MarineMax. A connection that has spurred too many wonderful memories to count.

Kevin and Susan Buckley’s story began on a boat. Their first date was a cruise aboard a 17-foot MFG bowrider owned by Kevin’s father. They were just 17 years old.

The couple married in 1977 and still enjoyed getting out on the water in crafts owned by Kevin’s friends. It wasn’t until they moved away from their hometown that they seriously considered buying their own vessel.

It was at the Boston show with Steven where Kevin met Larry Russo from Russo Marine, which later became MarineMax Danvers. Larry put the Buckleys into the ‘Boat Show Special,’ a 13-ft. Boston Whaler Sport—as Kevin says, “boat, motor, and trailer” for $9,000.

“Growing up, my friends always had Whalers, and I became enthralled with them,” said Kevin. “I’ve owned at least 10 Whalers ever since. We’ve been able to continually upgrade over the years because the brand holds its value so well. As our family grew and we found ourselves with a few extra bucks, we were able to trade our Whaler in and move up a couple of feet.”

The Buckleys now own a 280 Vantage they purchased in 2022, and they absolutely love it, naming the boat Poppy’s Pride as the five grandchildren always call Kevin “Poppy.”

“We can fit a dozen people comfortably on the boat, no problem,” mused Kevin. “We’ll cruise around Hull, Massachusetts, where we have a beach house, or take the grandkids tubing. They love to anchor offshore, pull out the Lily Pad and jump off it.”

It’s good that the Whaler has so much room. The Buckley family has grown quite a bit since their first date. In addition to Kevin and Susan, their cruising often includes daughter Jessica, her husband John, and their three children, Isabella, Noah, and Liam; son Steven, his wife Kadi and their two kids Grace and Grant; and their youngest daughter Michelle and her boyfriend Eli, who is a boat enthusiast also.

The 280 Vantage is the family cruising vessel, but they also have a 23-year-old Boston Whaler 210 Conquest they use for fishing and throwing out lobster traps.

MarineMax.com 25

MarineMax has been with the Buckleys every step of the way, with Sales Consultant Dan Thompson keeping his eyes and ears open for a deal on the next upgrade. The MarineMax team handles everything from registration to delivery to the new boat orientation.

“The people at MarineMax are tremendously friendly and knowledgeable,” said Kevin. “They put your interest first and ensure they get you into the right boat for your family. It isn’t about the biggest boat, but the right one for your needs. And whenever we were ready to move up, they gave us a fair price for our trade-in.”

Kevin was reminded of MarineMax’s exceptional customer service when he bought his last boat during COVID-19.

“There was such a low inventory of boats that people were paying top dollar, so I thought it might be a good time to upgrade,” Kevin remembers.

It isn’t just the sales department that impresses Kevin. MarineMax knows every day that you can’t be out on the water is a big deal, so when a leaky rubber seal on the head threatened to sideline the Buckley’s plans, all Kevin had to do was call the service team and give them the slip number. By the next day, he received an email that everything was taken care of.

These days when Kevin is in the neighborhood, he’ll stop by to say “hi” to General Manager Kim Wilkinson of MarineMax Danvers and her team or the folks at the MarineMax Boston location. Even though he’s not in the market right now, it’s a chance to catch up with the people he’s worked with over the years.

And you never know when the opportunity to move up a couple of feet will present itself.

Vacations | Crewed Charter

As children become adults, parents sometimes struggle to find gifts that are appreciated and meaningful. In 2022, Brad and Tricia Serres of Texas decided to give their grown children a Christmas gift that would provide lifetime memories—a MarineMax family vacation in the British Virgin Islands.

“My husband Connor and I did this trip four years ago,” says Haylee Serres, who has lived on St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands with her husband since 2017. They were delighted when Connor’s parents surprised them with a family vacation they’d share with them along with Connor’s sister Morgan from California.

The Serres family began their travel in April 2023, initially to the

island of St. John to celebrate an uncle’s birthday. “During COVID, the BVI restricted travelers arriving on Tortola from St. John, but that was no longer the case,” Haylee explained. The family was able to get a shuttle directly from St. John to Tortola and clear customs and then dropped off at their MarineMax 443 power catamaran at the MarineMax Vacations base on Nanny Cay. “We had pre-arranged for provisions, so all the food was already on the boat. That made it really easy for us to just unpack and relax on the boat that first night.”

The next morning, the Serres’ boat was the first released from the base for their cruise to the outermost island of Anegada. They anticipated

the trip to be rough, but the water was flat and smooth. “We kept calling it a lake, and the trip only took us a little more than two hours,” recalled Haylee, who recommends renting an island-authentic Moke to tour Anegada, including Cow Wreck Beach and Tipsy Beach Bar, where they had the best conch fritters of the trip and a lobster dinner. “The way they prepare and serve the food is a slowed-down pace that brings you back to the way food should be prepared and eaten, not in mass quantity with a lot of waste that ends up in a bisque because people don’t show up,” Haylee describes. “Everyone who makes the required reservations in advance shows up.”

MarineMax.com 29

Reserving a mooring ball in advance with the BoatyBall app was made easy with the excellent Wi-Fi on board the MarineMax 443. “Using the BoatyBall app requires you to have Wi-Fi turned on at the boat so you can reserve. You have to prebook and get the reservation in on time, but it’s worth the hassle to not have to worry about all the moorings being taken if you want to take your time cruising,” says Haylee, and especially recommends using it on Anegada and Jost Van Dyke.

One of the Serres’ main memories of their time in the BVI is how every single island has so much history and its own story. And since they arrived on Virgin Gorda before the crowd came, their experience exploring the enormous boulders felt intimate. The Baths at Virgin Gorda are considered the Eighth Wonder of the World, with their unique caves and structure providing a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

30 MarineMax Lifestyles
“We crawled through these rocks and appreciated the beauty there, but knowing the price people paid in history made it deeply personal for my husband and I,” Haylee recalls.

Haylee recommends spending at least a full day at Scrub Island, especially if you get a slip in the marina. “The slide in the swimming pool is really fun, and the bouncy floating trampoline looked like the best summer camp ever! It made me think of this whimsical book I read about living in this insane dream, but it was real. You just feel secluded from the real world,” says Haylee.

Haylee is hard-pressed to pick her favorite island or memory since they’re all so special. “Jost Van Dyke is a favorite island for many because it has the most beautiful beach in the world,” says Haylee, which is why it’s sometimes crowded with passengers from cruise ship excursions. The Serres group looked at the cruise ship dates in advance to avoid the crowd and were glad they did.

The couple had previously donated a palm tree to the island to share in rebuilding the island after the hurricanes. Finding that palm tree on the island was a special moment.

Haylee describes the experiences she has on this trip are core memories that will last a lifetime, but no matter how many times you go, it will always feel new. “I live in the Caribbean, but snorkeling at the Indians was the most beautiful I’ve seen,” Haylee says. “When do you just get to pull up to a dinghy parking lot and have the best snorkel experience,” questions Haylee. It’s unforgettable. Unforgettable is also how Haylee describes their last night on the Willy T. Enough said.

Make unforgettable memories while immersing yourself in your own charter experience. Start planning your adventure today!

A FAMILY TRADITION

A passion for boating and a longstanding relationship with MarineMax connect three generations of the Valuk family.

Watersports | Nautique

Ken Valuk has owned more than his share of Nautiques. Starting with his first Super Air Nautique in 2000, the San Antonio resident has upgraded to a new model every five years. There were a pair of 226s in 2005 and 2010. In 2015, a G21 found its way to the dock. In 2021 he purchased his current model, a Super Air Nautique G23. All five came from the same dealer and salesman, Mark Pena, at MarineMax Sail & Ski San Antonio. The kicker? Those Nautiques aren’t the only sales that Mark has made to the Valuk family. Ken’s father, Frank, is also a fan of the dealership. With a place on the coast and a penchant for fishing, his tastes have run to another popular MarineMax brand, Boston Whaler, but his tally is even higher than his son’s. The elder Valuk has purchased 12 Whalers from Sail & Ski, including his current Boston Whaler 350 Outrage and 250 Dauntless.

Whats the reason for such intense loyalty, both in terms of brands and the dealer? Ken admits location, at least initially, played a role. “I really wanted a dealer here

in San Antonio,” he explains. “I’m not super mechanically inclined—I’ve changed props, drained fluids at the end of the season, and changed the oil on my cars—but I didn’t really know what I was getting into with my own boat. I wanted the dealer to be in town.” But what ultimately kept both son and father coming back is best explained as a combination of Mark’s attentive service and the MarineMax experience.

“The level of quality, the sales experience, and the service experience has just really been great,” says Ken. “They try to get us our boats when we need them when they’ve been in the shop, and if anything’s ever broken or we’ve needed maintenance, they really try to help us out. And so many of the people we first met are still there— salesman, parts guys, service manager. It just seems they put a little more effort into taking care of things.”

Though Nautique and Boston Whaler are obviously the Valuk family’s boats of choice (Ken dubs his favored Nautiques the “Ferrari” of boats), like many MarineMax

customers, their passion for boating started decades earlier. Ken remembers he and his brother leaving behind a small, tiller-steer aluminum boat when the family moved from Connecticut to Texas when he was seven. There, a 15’ Glastron soon took its place and introduced the pair to waterskiing. His parents decided to buy a piece of lakefront property a few years later; however, that ultimately set the hook for the decades of lake-life that followed.

“We were camping at the lake and just leaving the boat beached on the shore and loving the lake lifestyle,” Ken recalls. “Bringing friends up, pulling the tube, and skiing on combos. It was great.” His first pass behind a neighbor’s tournament ski boat in high school ignited a passion for watersports and elite towboats. Soon he joined the local ski club, began to participate in amateur tournaments, and one fateful day he and his father walked into MarineMax Sail & Ski’s door and met Mark. The rest, as they say, is history. One that Ken’s children have been fortunate to repeat.

MarineMax.com 33

As you might expect, Ken shared his love for watersports and the lake life as he raised his two daughters, Cali, and Cassie, now 22 and 17. “It’s like my brother and I growing up—we loved the lake life, it was so much fun, and I’ve instilled that into my kids. They’ve done the same thing I did with my parents, starting young on the kneeboard and skis and now wakeboarding and surfing with friends. It’s come full circle from where I started, but now I’m the captain driving the boat for the kids.” Cali and her husband Augie even chose to have his and hers lake-life-inspired bachelorette and bachelor parties on, what else, a pair of Nautique G23s. And if history is any indication, the odds are good that all will continue the boating tradition with their own families someday—a tradition that will likely include a dad, grandparents, and maybe even a familiar salesman from MarineMax.

“I met Frank and Ken in our store in 1999 looking at Boston Whalers, and from that point on, I felt like family. My wife, daughters, and I have been invited to many birthday parties and even the wedding of Ken’s daughter. The whole Valuk Family has been in my life for 25 years and still going strong. And I have truly enjoyed the journey,” says Mark.

A journey that echoes what MarineMax founder Bill McGill espoused from the very beginning. Boating truly brings families together. And three generations of the Valuk family are living proof.

25 YEARS UNITED BY WATER®

It’s all about family, enjoying life on the water, and doing what you love.

Time flies when having fun, and on the water, it can go by even faster when enjoying it with loved ones. With 25 years at the helm, we can safely say MarineMax knows a few things about a passion for boating and family too. And speaking of which, that’s where the story begins.

MarineMax, a publicly traded company (NYSE: HZO), has made remarkable contributions to the boating industry and boating enthusiasts for 25 years. As the largest boat, yacht, and superyacht

company in the world, our priority is to provide the best experience to our customers, and it all began with our founder’s belief that boating changes people’s lives.

This year, Executive Chairman of the Board Bill McGill celebrated half of a century since the formation of Gulfwind Marine, which in time became what we know today as MarineMax. What started as a desire to fuel his lifelong passion for boating blossomed into a well-respected business shortly after he moved his family to Florida. Through hard work,

dedication, and with the support of his family, success prevailed.

Following years of great success, the bar was raised even higher, and additional solutions were sought to advance the boating community and better serve the needs of consumers. Top boat dealers across the nation bonded together over their passion for being on the water, and shortly after, the concept of MarineMax came to fruition in January of 1998. The new company name was formed to create more opportunities and unite an even bigger family by water.

Under the new mission to provide the world’s best pleasure boating experience by consistently exceeding the greatest expectations of our customers and team members, the business has increased at significant levels. The strategic growth plan resulted in numerous acquisitions of other notable boating-related companies and dealerships globally. Thus, not only increasing the number of locations but also the variety of the products and services offered.

Before entering the program, this working single mother of one encountered many obstacles when it came to housing. From living in a townhome that caused the pair to become ill to sleeping in the living rooms of apartments of different family members during the pandemic and then getting

forced to move from a condo since the property went up for sale, Karin faced many challenges. However, due to the program, Karin and Josiah finally have one less major stressor in their lives and can now spend many days together enjoying each other’s company in the comfort of their very own home.

This year Brett McGill, MarineMax CEO and President headed over to the Pinellas County neighborhood development with a team of managers from around the country to assist with the build. The experience was positive, uplifting, and a positive way for the team to be involved within the local community to offer their help and support. As Joshua Lavine, General Manager of MarineMax in the St. Petersburg, Florida, location states, “There’s nothing more impactful to a family or delivers a better experience and memories than a house.” Brett was

excited to take part, as well as the rest of the management team who spoke in this impactful video.

For nearly a decade, MarineMax has taken part and partnered with Habitat for Humanity of Pinellas and West Pasco to help a family in need in Pinellas County, FL. Typically, over a 13-week span, and in conjunction with the future homeowners themselves, various MarineMax employees dedicate their time to help build a new home for families such as the Jimenezs. From the beginning stages of pouring concrete to the finishing touches with painting, cleaning, and landscaping, MarineMax is proud to be a part of it all. In addition to a monetary donation MarineMax provided for Habitat for Humanity, the home was officially dedicated to the Jimenez family in a heartwarming ceremony in April.

Habitat for Humanity is a nonprofit organization that helps low-income families across the nation and in 70 other countries improve standards of living with stable housing by enabling those who qualify for a zero-interest mortgage. With the combined efforts of the organization, volunteers, sponsors, and future homeowners, a new home is built from the ground up, allowing stability and the chance for the homeowners to build generational wealth. For more information about this year’s event or to donate or volunteer, please visit Habitat for Humanity’s website.

In addition to assisting the local community with housing, MarineMax

takes the helm within the community in many other ways. From improving the health of children, such as supporting the Golisano Children’s Hospital of Southwest Florida, to aiding in a specified cause, such as breast cancer awareness through the American Cancer Society, MarineMax enjoys not only having a positive impact on the water but making a difference in other areas of people’s lives as well.

More charitable events are underway. Some to look forward to around the holidays are the Fill the Boat with Love events. Besides working with many local charities nationwide to fill boats with goodies of all sorts, MarineMax also

collects unwrapped toys for children of all ages for Toys for Tots at store locations. MarineMax is proud to contribute to bettering the lives of those within the community. Whether it is putting in an effort by volunteering time or donating blood, funds, or supplies to support a cause, our company team members find great value in helping and giving hope to others in need.

SALTY STORIES WITH THE ZERPHYS

Get ready to meet the Zerphy family, AKA the ultimate boating squad! These guys have been MarineMax customers since 2000, and they know a thing or two about navigating the high seas.

Eric is a Chesapeake Bay boy born and raised, and Sabrina comes from a long line of military folk. These two lovebirds first met at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, where Sabrina became a surface warfare Qualified Line officer, serving aboard the USS Mount Baker (AE-34) and USNS Leroy Grumman

(TAO-195). Meanwhile, Eric was all about nuclear submarines, and he rocked the boat as a line officer aboard the USS Trepang (SSN-674) and USS Cheyenne (SSN-773). They graduated in 1990, and the party was, of course, aboard Eric’s parents’ 1986 42’ Chris-Craft motor yacht, Takara. Talk about a shindig on the water!

These two have been boating together for eons and have owned more boats than you can shake a stick at. They started their boating journey aboard a 1994 Sea Ray 200 Overnighter. Eric bought the boat while they

were both stationed in Charleston and as a surprise for when Sabrina returned from her deployment. It was a welcomed surprise. Good job, Eric! After a transfer to Norfolk, VA, and news of a baby on the way, they decided to trade up into something bigger. They went through a series of boats, including a 2003 Sea Ray 380 Sundancer that they kept for almost ten years. Eric and Sabrina raised their daughter aboard this one!

MarineMax.com 63

In 2018, they purchased Poseidon, a Galeon 430 HTC, the most unique and innovative boat yet. The hardtop coupe design allows them to enjoy the outside without being in the elements. They traveled down the Intracoastal Waterway (ICW) to Tampa, then down to Key West, and back to Kent Island in the winter of 2018/2019. They had so much fun on that trip that they returned to Florida in the winter of 2019/2020 for their daughter’s wedding. The bride and groom even had wedding photos taken on the stern of the Galeon 430 HTC.

Currently, they’re riding high in a 2021 Cruisers Yachts 46 Cantius named Echo Sierra. Like Goldilocks, Eric and Sabrina found their boat. It’s not too big or too small, easy to operate and maintain, economical to run, and can accommodate occasional guests. The 46 Cantius was the perfect fit for their needs, providing everything they required in an easy-to-operate and maintain package.

With eight boats over the last 25+ years, the one constant theme remained the advantage of relying on a dealership network like MarineMax. They’ve traveled from New Jersey down to Key West and everywhere in between. And guess what? They don’t plan on docking anytime soon. And MarineMax will be there to provide excellent support and assistance no matter where the seas take them.

The Zerphy family spills the beans and shares all their epic tales on the podcast show From the Helm Boating Broadcast. Click below to see the episode and prepare to sail with the coolest crew!

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE

For one speed-loving yachtsman, the Azimut S8 checks all the right boxes.

The thing about guys who own Lamborghinis is they aren’t known for moving slowly. Kurt Friedman is an Ohio native who also owns a waterfront home in Naples, Florida, that he bought in 2010. The 78-year-old sportscar enthusiast was already well acquainted with thrill-inducing machinery by then, but he’d never owned a boat. And when he looked at the dock behind his new home, it just looked so tantalizingly empty that he knew it was time to dip his toe into the world of boating. Or, more accurately, do a cannonball.

“He came into our MarineMax location,” says James Corts, a yacht and brokerage sales executive at MarineMax Naples, “and he said he was looking to buy his first boat. But it turned out he wasn’t being totally truthful. He was actually looking to buy his first boat and his second boat. He basically bought two at the same time: a Boston Whaler 34 Conquest with triple outboards and a little 22’ Whaler, and they filled up his dock quite nicely, I think.”

At the time, Friedman thought he might like to become a fisherman, so the choice of the Boston Whalers made sense. But the angler’s life turned out not to suit Friedman, though he did love his time on the water. He soon decided that a more cruise-centric vessel was what he needed, and that’s how he found himself back at MarineMax, working in concert with Corts to find his next boat.

“The switch [from fishing boat to cruising boat] was easy,” says Friedman, “and Azimut just seemed like the logical choice. My wife Joyce and I, we fell in love with the lines. They do such a beautiful job with that.”

Friedman soon found himself advancing through the Azimut ranks, culminating with

an S7 and now the S8 that he currently owns. “We have bought seven boats in 13 years,” he says with a laugh, “I guess you could say we are pretty good customers.”

Friedman uses his boat frequently, and not surprisingly for a Lamborghini man, is that one thing he likes about it is its speed. “We cruise at 28 or 29 knots,” he says. “We sometimes go to The Bahamas with seven or eight other boats, and we usually lead the pack.” Those speeds are due to a powerful propulsion package that includes triple 1,000-horsepower Volvo Penta IPS1350s.

For Friedman, the pods are a no-brainer. “They are so smooth and quiet,” he says, “I like them so much better than the shafts

we’ve had on other boats, and the fuel economy is pretty decent too.”

However, his captain took a bit of convincing. “At first, the captain didn’t want a pod-driven boat—he hated them,” says Corts. “But we took the boat out on a sea trial, and we opened up the sunroof, and the engines were so quiet that all you could hear was the air moving by. Kurt was immediately enamored by the pods, and the captain really ended up coming around on them too. He is like one of our biggest salesmen now, telling people how much he likes driving a pod boat.”

The captain has a very valid opinion on the matter, as Friedman and his wife love to travel by boat. A favorite destination is the

MarineMax.com 69

many islands of The Bahamas. “We’ve been to a bunch of them—Chubb Cay, Staniel Cay, Nassau. We like them all. I find Chubb particularly relaxing, but the only problem is there is no golf there.”

The Friedmans also enjoy attending MarineMax-sponsored Getaways!® and annual events. They’ve even gone to Italy, to the town of Viareggio on the Tuscan coast, to visit Azimut’s headquarters. “The events MarineMax puts on are simply wonderful,” says Friedman, “and the people are just as good.”

The couple enjoys spending time aboard with their family. They have three children and five grandchildren, and the yacht has become a focal point for family activities even as the clan has spread out. One daughter, in particular, loves to use the boat with her friends, and the Friedmans are all too happy to entertain them. And, of course, the S8 is up to the task as well, with four full staterooms for everyone’s privacy, plus multiple entertainment areas topside. There’s no news on whether Friedman intends to keep moving up the food chain when it comes to boats. He thinks keeping a bigger boat at his home might be limited by draft. But Corts sees things differently. “Oh, I am pretty sure we can squeeze an S10 back there,” Corts says, “he loves that S8 so much, I just don’t see him slowing down anytime soon.”

Happy Anniversary, Darling

A Connecticut couple gave each other the perfect 20th-anniversary gift— a new Galeon 325 GTO.

Yachting | Galeon Yachts

In August 2002, New England couple Camielle and Robert Griffiths celebrated their wedding on the water on a chartered boat off the historic seaport of Mystic, Connecticut.

“The day was so perfect, and our family and close friends were there to see us be married,” Camielle said.

So, nearly two decades later, when the couple decided to purchase their very first boat, they made the new Galeon 325 GTO an anniversary present to themselves, arranging to take delivery in August 2022. “It was our 20th wedding anniversary, and it felt right,” Camielle said. “Buying the boat at that time and being able to relive that day again and again with our friends and family—it just felt like full circle.”

When the Griffiths ordered the Galeon in 2021 through Sales Consultant

Justin McGale at MarineMax Westbrook (Connecticut), they had been members of a local boat club for about a year. The club had provided them with a good, hands-on introduction to power boating.

“It gave us training and also familiarity with the Connecticut shoreline and Long Island Sound,” Rob said.

“It helped us to figure out if we liked the boating life,” Camielle added. They did. In fact, they liked it so much that it was a big disappointment when a couple of times, their reservation for a club boat was canceled because the vessel was out of commission.

“We decided we wanted the flexibility and the access of owning our own boat,” Rob said. “We figured out pretty quickly that boat ownership was a happy place for us,” said Camielle agreeing.

MarineMax.com 73

With their minds made up to buy a new powerboat, the Griffiths did their due diligence in assessing the size and style of vessel that would be right for them. Rather than purchase a single-engine boat in the 20-foot range like the club boats they had been using, they felt they needed the space and performance a twin-engine boat in the 30-foot range would afford.

“We are very family-oriented, so we wanted enough room to accommodate the people we care about,” Camielle said. It also was important to be able to bring their beagle on the boat. “Effie is a family member,” she explained.

The Griffiths’ experiences with the boat club, which like most clubs, imposed geographical restrictions on its members and did not permit them to take vessels out overnight, made them realize they also wanted a boat with the range and sleeping capacity to go on long-distance cruises.

Rob, who has an engineering background, began searching the internet, focusing on boats in the low 30-foot size range. He came across the premiere walkthrough video of the Galeon 325 GTO by Bob Burke, MarineMax Galeon brand manager. “I thought it had an interesting, innovative layout with the drop-down platform on the port side,” Rob said. “Most significantly, when I mentioned to a few friends we know who are lifelong boaters… the brand we were looking at, Galeon, had a reputation for quality. That was a tipping point for us.”

Their interest in the 325 GTO led the couple to MarineMax Westbrook, where McGale helped them order the boat from the Galeon factory. Rob describes Justin as being more like an advocate than a broker. “He took a genuine interest in us. Even when we weren’t in communication with him, we felt like he was working behind the scenes on our behalf,” Rob said.

When the Griffiths took delivery of their new Galeon 325 GTO, Justin and the MarineMax team helped to ease the process and orient the couple to their new boat. “The engineers, the captain, and the sales staff were all very professional and made you feel very comfortable and confident,” Camielle said. She and her daughter also took MarineMax’s Women on the Water® class to further enhance their skills and confidence in driving the new boat.

Not long after taking ownership of the Galeon, the Griffiths invited family

and friends to join them for a christening celebration. They named the boat Meally after one of Camielle’s nicknames.

“It was a lovely day,” she said.

Although the couple enjoys just hanging out with friends on board the boat in its marina on the Connecticut River, they did not waste any time fulfilling their dream of long-range cruising. Meally’s maiden voyage took them all the way down Long Island Sound to Fishers Island, into the Atlantic Ocean, and up Narragansett Bay to Newport, Rhode Island.

Rob was particularly pleased by the 325 GTO’s offshore performance with its upgraded power and twin Mercury Verado

400hp outboards. “We’ve gotten it up to 42 mph. When you hit waves, the boat feels solid,” he said. “Sleeping on board is comfortable—surprisingly so. And we use the drop-down balcony every time we are anchored or on a mooring ball.”

“The boat looks great, very attractive,” Camielle added. “She has all the things we wanted from our first boat.”

An Ocean Alexander Rendezvous in Paradise It’s all about fun and making new friends at an anniversary event to remember. MarineMax.com 77

Ocean Alexander owners headed back to paradise at Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Florida, for this year’s 2023 East Coast Rendezvous from March 30 to April 2. This year marks Ocean Alexander’s 45th anniversary, a ‘sapphire milestone.’ With an anniversary and annual Rendezvous to celebrate, it made for an unforgettable weekend! The owners and their guests had the opportunity to experience the perfect location of Florida’s stunning coastline, warm weather, and crystal blue waters while participating in exciting activities, enjoying spectacular entertainment, and great company.

The sapphire-themed weekend kicked off with the much-anticipated

welcome reception, where sixteen sets of owners mingled with old friends, met new friends, and ultimately celebrated their shared passion for yachting and the Ocean Alexander brand. OA models in attendance ranged from a 1987 56-foot motor yacht to the 2022 Ocean Alexander 37 Legend.

The rendezvous was jam-packed with a curated agenda of daily activities, including an adventurous fishing charter where owners and guests had the chance to explore some of the best fishing locations the area has to offer and catch a wide range of species from marlin to mahi-mahi!

For those who wanted to rest, relax, and unwind, spa amenities and cabanas

were available for their enjoyment.

For the avid golfers, there was a 9-hole foursome scramble tournament at the beautiful Ocean Reef Hammock Golf Course, set among lush tropical vegetation and stunning ocean views.

Another highlight of the weekend was the exhilarating SEABOB Dive Exhibition, where guests were taken out to sea for the unique opportunity to experience a SEABOB while participating in an underwater scavenger hunt! Guests could compete against one another using the agile SEABOB to glide and maneuver through the water and find the hidden sapphire gems!

78 MarineMax Lifestyles

The annual Yacht Hop did not disappoint, as owners enthusiastically decorated their aft decks to the sapphire blue theme and served a wonderful selection of small bites and cocktails! The evening events ranged from a fun beachside dinner with fire dancers, a bonfire, and s’mores to a dress to impress in ‘shades of blue’ cocktail party, live band, and dancing.

Additionally, owners and guests were able to view and board one of Ocean Alexander’s newest models throughout the weekend—the 2023 Ocean Alexander 32 Explorer. Designed for extended cruising and exploration, it features a spacious and luxurious interior, as well as a stylish exterior built for offshore cruising.

Overall, the 2023 East Coast Rendezvous was a success! It was an incredible weekend filled with fun activities, delicious food, music, dancing, laughter, and a chance for OA owners to spend quality time with one another, creating memories that last a lifetime!
