An introduction to the

MARINE THEATRE LYME REGIS

T

he Marine Theatre team is delighted to introduce a jam-packed sizzling summer season of theatre, comedy, music and dance. We have some fantastic theatre visiting us here in Lyme including work from internationally renowned Shakespeare’s Globe with Shakespeare Untold [p8] and award-winning Paines Plough [p10] There’s lots on offer for families from a Roald Dahl favourite in June Half Term to puppet theatre and drama workshops for kids in the Summer Holidays. There’s dance too from international company JSLN [p20] and a season of open-air theatre through July and August on Theatre Square, our own ocean-side stage This season we are excited to be embarking on an in-house production with a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s The Tempest, uncovering Lyme’s links to The Bard’s last play and featuring a cast of over 50 local performers [p4]

We look forward to seeing you here soon! Clemmie and the Marine Theatre Team

Help us give the MARINE a MAKEOVER! We are so lucky to have a theatre open all year round in Lyme Regis. Our theatre building has stood here for over 120 years and has survived through the support of the community. This year we raised £95,000 to complete the restoration of our theatre roof ensuring dry audiences for years to come! But we don’t want to stop there. We have an ambitious plan to improve the theatre’s facilities and ensure a sustainable, environmentally-friendly and accessible venue for the community of Lyme and future generations. The cost of this work is estimated at around £100,000.

If you feel you’re able to make a contribution, however small, please visit www.marinetheatre.com. If you’d rather not donate online, please pop into the theatre to donate in the boxes, or send a cheque in the post made payable to LymeArts Community Trust. @ M A R I N E T H E AT R E

MARINE THEATRE AND MARINE PLAYERS PRESENT

Shakespeare’s

The Tempest

UNCOVERING LYME’S LINKS WITH THE BARD’S LAST PLAY.... In July 1609 Lyme-born Admiral George Somers set sail from England to bring urgent supplies to the fledgling British settlement of Jamestown in Virginia. Three months in, the fleet hit a hurricane and wrecked Somers’ ship on an uninhabited Bermuda. 150 passengers were stranded for ten months on the island before building new ships and sailing on to rescue Jamestown. One of these was Sylvester Jourdain, also from Lyme Regis, who wrote an account of the storm, the shipwreck and ‘the Isle of Devils’, and published it in London; Shakespeare read it, and was inspired to write his last play The Tempest.

This July, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Lyme’s twinning with St George’s Bermuda, the Marine Theatre will stage The Tempest of Lyme, a new adaptation of Shakespeare’s play weaving in Lyme’s story of Sir George Somers that inspired it. Directed by Marine Artistic Director Clemmie Reynolds, with music by award-winning film composer Andrew Dickson, this open-air production will be performed by local actors, singers and musicians on Theatre Square with sweeping views of Lyme Bay as a backdrop. [p.28]

To get involved in any capacity email clemmie@marinetheatre.com, call 01297 442 394, or pop into the theatre; no one will be turned away!

ust before heading to Port Eliot Festival, solo guitarist James Blackshaw joins us to perform celestial and spirit-lifting guitar-led compositions. James made his name as a 12-string acoustic guitarist, and his relationship with the instrument is near perfect. He has developed a unique playing style that takes Takoma school finger-picking into an entirely new place. Drawing inspiration from 60’s and 70’s singer-songwriters, baroque/orchestral pop and folk music, while still sounding contemporary, Summoning Suns, and his latest album is Blackshaw’s foray into more traditional forms of songcraft.
