optimistic that it will be healing and joyful for all of us. The holiday season is also a bittersweet time for reflection, especially for those among us nursing the wounds of loss or loneliness. This year, more than ever, I’m reminded of the power of a simple act of kindness, the touch of warmth that can ease the sadness of a heavy heart. “There always were two ways to live in a world that is often dark and full of tears. We can curse the darkness or we can light a light, and as the Chassidim say, a little light drives out much darkness. May we all help light up the world.” —Rabbi Jonathan Sacks Happy holidays, my friends; may your candles burn bright this season.

JESSICA CLINE, CO-FOUNDER AND CEO

THE DECEMBER ISSUE is always one of my favorites. I love the holidays and all the happiness that comes with time in the company of family and friends. My holiday rituals? They’re simple yet profound in their comfort: donning cozy fuzzy socks and getting lost in the timeless tales of old movies. This year, I fully intend to add more to my collection of both. I’m also doing something I’ve never done before: I’m going on a cruise. It’s my sister’s birthday on the 23rd and we — my mom, niece, nephew and a few family friends — are headed to the Bahamas to celebrate. We are starting new traditions after the passing of my dad last year. The holidays can be tough for some and last year was a complete blur. So, we are reminding ourselves that time with loved ones, while sipping cocktails and deciding what excursions to book, is the most important thing of all. I think this is going to be something brand new and I’m 12 december 2023 marin living.

creative DIRECTOR This year was the first time I traveled to Europe after moving back to the States from abroad, and I had almost forgotten how at home I feel in a foreign land among total strangers speaking languages I barely understand. Reconnecting with family and friends filled my cup and reminded me how important it is to make that journey more often. We are spending the holidays in Marin this year and I couldn’t be happier — because as the saying goes, there is no place like home. Happiest of holidays to you and yours!

AS 2023 DRAWS TO A CLOSE I am so grateful for all the new things I have experienced this year: the new people I have met, the fast friends I have made and not least of all, the hard lessons I have learned. And trust me, there have been a lot. It’s humbling to admit that we make mistakes or have wasted too much time on something (or someone) that, even at the time, feels like it is dragging us down and holding us back. But I have come to learn that the malaise actually represents a coming growth spurt — in emotional intelligence or in our careers or in a relationship. When I feel stuck, I have learned to reach outside of my small, protected world and try something new. Taking a class is my favorite challenge. Not only do I broaden my horizons, but I usually encounter new people who give me the fresh perspective I crave.

ALL THINGS NUTCRACKER

Cassie Zampa-Keim, CEO and Founder of Innovative Match, a concierge matchmaking firm, offers tips for navigating the holiday season while dating. What should I tell my friends and family about my dating life when they ask?

How do I introduce my new relationship during the holidays?

When family and friends give you the old, “So … how’s your love life going?” it’s really a personal decision about how much or little you want to say. But be prepared; there will be follow-up questions if you drop even the slightest hint of a new relationship brewing. If you’re not looking to be in the hot seat around the holiday table, say something that will end the conversation politely, such as, “I promise to tell you as soon as I have something to tell.”

My advice is that unless you plan on being with this person for the foreseeable future, and they’ve indicated the same to you, I would refrain from bringing them home to meet your Mom, Dad and dear Aunt Sally, or meeting theirs. Creating familial connections too soon can create a false sense of intimacy. It can also make it that much more difficult to go your separate ways later.

My ex and I are both in town, but should we connect? Ahhh, it’s so tempting. The lights, the mistletoe, the holiday cooking. But my answer is generally the same: leave exes where they belong, which is in the past. Unless an ex has given you some concrete reason to think that the reasons the relationship ended no longer apply and you’re interested in seeing where things lead, you should have no basis for believing anything is different.

How can I keep the person I just started dating interested while traveling solo over the holidays? First off, don’t cancel your plans just because you’re seeing someone new. It’s very important to continue living your life and being independent. That said, now that you have someone new in your life, it’s also important to keep the connection going while you’re apart. You can do that easily by talking on the phone, texting and FaceTiming regularly. Also, it’s nice to project and discuss any plans you may have or want to make when you see each other in person again.

For your own real-life Golden Girls experience, the Corte Madera Town Council is partnering with a nonprofit to help older residents find roommates. Home Match Marin, a program of Front Porch (www.covia.org), will vet both homeowners and potential tenants before facilitating the matching process.

HELP FOR HOUSING Marin County supervisors recently set aside $500,000 to help Marin Foster Care Association (www.marinfostercare.org) purchase a 10-unit apartment building in Novato to house youths aging out of the foster care system. “This project is critical for our transition-age foster youth who routinely struggle to find housing in Marin when they age out of care,” says Ashley Hurd, executive director of Marin Foster Care Association. “This project also benefits the county as a whole, because it permanently preserves these apartments as affordable units.”

DISCOVERING LIVERMORE VALLEY Livermore Valley, touted as one of the state’s oldest wine regions, dating back to the late 1800s, is where both the chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon grapes originated in California. And if we are talking numbers, Wente Vineyards’ chardonnay clone is the source of more than 80 percent of the chardonnay produced in the U.S., while Concannon Vineyards’ cabernet sauvignon clones account for 80 percent of the grapes grown in California. More than 40 vineyards call the AVA home and a wide variety of wines are produced here, many with a softer, more European bent than what is produced in the wine regions north of Marin. While fashion lovers flock to Livermore for the Premium Outlets (for good reason — think Prada, Gucci, Saint Laurent, Arc’teryx, Brunello Cucinelli, John Varvatos, Loro Piana and so many more), wine aficionados and history buffs will love the valley. Here is a starter’s guide to eating and drinking your way through the region. By Casey Gillespie

CONCANNON VINEYARD

4590 Tesla Road www.concannonvineyard.com

This historic property was founded in 1883 and boasts many award-winning wines thanks to its family’s four generations of storied winemaking. Tastings can be booked indoors or outdoors — and we highly recommend the terrace or the pavilion, but don’t miss the museum-like collection of older vintages inside (the evolution of the bottles’ shapes and sizes is fascinating). And if you find yourself in the area without a reservation, not to worry. The wine bar offers wine by the glass and a relaxed setting to enjoy it in. 36 december 2023 marin living.

If you are going to make a weekend of Livermore Valley, booking a stay at this 10-room resort is a must. Each room has its own gas fireplace and a homemade breakfast is included. Situated close to the wineries, it has both a pool and a quaint spa — and what is a trip to Wine Country without a spa visit? We especially love that the resort, nestled among 21 acres of olive trees, produces unfiltered extra-virgin olive oil (available for purchase).

Not only has owner Darcie (a fifth-generation vintner) created all the wine labels and art that dots the tasting room walls, but her property has a bohemian ambience that lulls you into a state of I-may-never-want-togo-home. Notes of European winemaking are very apparent in Hungarian-born winemaker Julian Halasz’s creations, and trust us, that is a good thing.

The menu is best described as modern rustic, but it is so much more than that. Flavors are thoughtfully combined and the service is on par with a fine dining establishment. The atmosphere is buzzy and the spot is always busy so reservations are highly recommended.

LOCANDA WINE BAR

2293 First Street www.locandarestaurants.com This charming wine bar serves an abbreviated-but-tempting menu of antipasti, pasta, pizza and paninis, as well as a brunch menu that would be a great option pre-wine tasting. The beautifully prepared dishes ooze authenticity. Definitely worth the stop.

During Holidays in the Vineyards (December 2–3), wineries’ tasting rooms will be festively decorated and will include special wines, arts, crafts, holiday music, activities and more. (Admission is free, but tasting fees apply.) Enjoy the Lights of Livermore on the Livermore Wine Trolley (December 8–23). The evening begins at Concannon Vineyards with a tasting before guests board the trolley and go on a one-hour tour of Livermore’s most spectacular lights displays. Tickets are $72.99 per person with the option to add a charcuterie box for two ($25).

So after lots of practice and a few auditions, Atkins did join her wedding band, Kitka (www.kitka.org), a Bay Area favorite, formed by amateur singers in 1979. The group features a collection of multigenerational vocalists ranging in age from their 20s to late 60s, singing songs from all over the world but focusing on women’s vocal music with deep ties to Balkan, Slavic and Caucasian lands. “It’s the sort of folk singing style that is almost an extension of your speaking voice — it’s traditionally something that people did naturally in the village, as opposed to something you had to go to a conservatory to learn,” Atkins, the group’s deputy director and frequent co-music director, says. “It’s a very natural way of making music.”

Kitka features a range of multigenerational singers, some of whom have been with the group for 30-plus years.

GETTING MARRIED AND DANCING and singing along to the live music is a highlight of any wedding. And for most people that’s where it ends. But not for Fairfax’s Kelly Atkins; she was encouraged to join the group that played at her wedding and 13 years later she is helping to not only lead it but bring its stunning traditional Eastern European singing to ever more audiences. For Atkins, an indie rock artist wellknown for playing in bands that placed a premium on intricate vocal harmony, making the jump to singing songs that were more likely heard in the village center than on a smoky stage was a logical leap to make. “I had heard Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares in the ’90s and thought, ‘What is this?’ ” Atkins says. “It just ignited something in my brain.”

Pre-pandemic Kitka toured in countries like Poland, Ukraine, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Serbia, Turkey, Georgia and Armenia to perform and learn from nativespeaking song masters there. The group has also written its own songs, commissioned new works and even done mashups to put its own spin on the music. “Right now, we have this beautiful Corsican song about the ocean and then slowly but surely this Georgian work song sort of trickles in,” Atkins says. “They’re completely different cultures but we just hear musically that it would work really well together.” For Kitka, at top of mind always is showing respect for the cultures and traditions behind the music. “We learn the vast majority of the songs from the actual native speakers and song masters,” she says. “And they sort of gifted them to us and we feel empowered to sing and share them.” Since the group often tackles as many as 20 different languages in a performance, the task can be difficult. “It’s definitely the most challenging music I’ve ever sung, not just the music itself but the language and making sure that we have 40 december 2023 marin living.

It’s even more ear-wormy than you would think; it’s very catchy, it really gets into your body.” It’s no surprise that Bay Area audiences have fallen in love with this sometimes-unfamiliar music, often making the group’s holiday Wintersongs concerts a family tradition. “There’s a lot of really interesting dissonance, strange chords and weird rhythms and vocal timbres that can be kind of jarring and very intense,” she says. “But it doesn’t feel or sound weird to me anymore, it just sounds beautiful.” And, of course, people from the countries represented attend shows and are often moved by the experience, notably last year when Kitka presented a heavily Ukrainian-themed show. “There

WAIT AND

SEA

Meet the Sausalito leader taking on global issues.

THERE’S A LOT OF TALK about rising sea levels. Global ocean warming leads to melting glaciers and ice sheets and eventually rising sea levels. More than 30 percent of the United States population living in coastal areas is vulnerable to rising seas and that is a big problem. Most people know this, hear this and even speak about it. That’s the issue here: all we’re doing is talking about it. But the Center for Sea Rise Solutions (CSRS, www.searise solutions.org) is taking the words and putting them into action to make impactful change and save coastal communities worldwide. “There’s a lot of talk and a lot of planning, but often communities are still left going, ‘Well, what are we going to do?’ ” says Janelle Kellman, the CEO and founder of CSRS (although you may recognize her as the former mayor and a current councilmember of Sausalito). 42 december 2023 marin living.

CSRS, based in Sausalito, provides innovations, resources and connections for coastal communities to stimulate global action against rising sea levels and the detrimental effects they cause. CSRS members have held local events in Sausalito, but have also traveled to Savannah, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; Providence, Rhode Island; and all the way to France, including Paris and Biarritz. “It is amazing because even if you don’t speak the same language or have the same culture, we are all dealing with the same issue,” says Kellman. “The water doesn’t care about jurisdictional boundaries. We’re really all in it together.” The problems are multifaceted and sometimes hard to see. “Sunny day floods” occur when the high tide causes flooding even on a perfectly clear day. Coastal erosion causes beaches and infrastructure to disappear. Flooding increases the flow of salt water into estuaries and groundwater aquifers. Low-lying lands become permanently

flooded, affecting important activity like agriculture. With a global focus, CSRS connects local communities with each other, experts and the latest strategies, giving them the knowledge they need to start action in their community. These workshops also focus on the new green economy and how developments that solve problems also create new jobs locally. Each workshop leads to new ideas and solutions for the next one. The concept of turning local ideas into larger community solutions is evident in Kellman’s own life, too — she recently announced her candidacy for California Lieutenant Governor, in which climate change would be her major focus. “This is how I amplify voices on this issue,” she says about her run. “My philosophy is how do we take action? How do we help communities today plan for the future? I don’t want to just talk. I want to actually do something.”

Stumbling across the northern spotted owl in Marin’s forests is a bright spot in the story of this threatened and federally protected bird.

ith dusk falling earlier each day, local forests are enlivened by calls of the northern spotted owl, strix occidentalis caurina. “They will suddenly leave the roost once it’s dark enough and fly down to a hunting perch,” says Renée Cormier, senior avian ecologist at Petaluma’s Point Blue Conservation Science, who leads a northern spotted owl monitoring program in Marin County. “It’s not the sleepy owl we see during the day.” The northern spotted owl is notable as a threatened subspecies under the Endangered Species Act and Marin is

the southern extent of its range. For environmental scientist Julia Kelly and her family, a cherished encounter with spotted owls first came when she heard the owls’ calls a couple of years ago. This past spring, she finally witnessed one by happenstance, reinvigorating an awareness of and appreciation for the local environment where the creatures live. In Marin, locals don’t need to go far to encounter the owl, best observed at dawn or dusk. “We live with spotted owls and this has totally changed my perspective on the nature we have surrounding us. They need such a unique and distinct habitat,” Kelly says.

We call them urban northern spotted owls in regards to their proximity to homes in Marin.

The northern spotted owl is a rare subspecies to see in the wild given substantial declines in numbers over its range, which extends all the way up to southwestern British Columbia. The owl typically occupies coniferous forest, so habitat loss due to logging has largely underpinned the species’ struggle. Yet with Marin’s protected lands and the longtime absence of the environmentally destructive practice, the owls are finding a healthy home in coniferous and even evergreen hardwood forest. “Marin is kind of a bright spot,” Cormier says. “The population does appear to be stable through our long-term monitoring programs. We think there is a lot of wonderful protected habitat here as well as low numbers of barred owls.” Barred owls, once restricted to Eastern North America, have expanded their range to the West Coast and now directly compete with the northern spotted owl, creating an additional pressure. In Marin, locals don’t need to go far to encounter the owl. “In a lot of other parts of their range they are

in remote areas that aren’t near homes. We call these here urban northern spotted owls in regard to their proximity to homes in Marin,” says Cormier. Since the owls are yearlong residents, maintaining the same territory and mating for life, seeing the spotted owl is a possible, but always special, occurrence. “If people are so lucky to encounter a spotted owl, enjoy it, but keep your distance and keep the visit short,” Cormier says. Because northern spotted owls will not necessarily react and fly away, it’s important to be proactive in giving them space, particularly during their February through July nesting season. As they are a threatened subspecies, their location should be kept secret. Avoiding rodenticide use at home as well as flash photography, loud noises and interactions with dogs (which should be kept leashed) while hiking will reduce disturbances and help protect the owls. While the broader context of biodiversity and habitat loss are a weighty reality, for residents like Kelly, being able to live among the northern spotted owl is a motivation to respect and protect local landscapes. “While it’s well known that birds are declining and many birds are vulnerable, it feels so good to know there is a living threatened species in our backyard,” she says. “It gives hope.” marin living. december 2023 47

It’s that time of year when we join with family and friends to celebrate — and if you want to make them feel extra loved, create a get-together as special as they are. By Casey Gillespie

This tablescape features a “foraged-and-found” theme, which in Marin, is easier than you think to do.

marin living. december 2023 49

If you are like us, planning a gathering starts with the initial elation of decor choices, elaborate menu design and unexpected touches that get the imagination going. And then comes the overwhelm. But it doesn’t have to be that way — a little strategic forethought and calculated creativity goes a long way, according to local design expert and founder of The Still Collective Lori Sperling (www.thestillcollective.com). We sat down with Sperling to talk about how to make deciding on the details fun and where you can add special accents to make this year’s holiday gathering shine.

CHOOSING A THEME

While not every gathering needs a theme, it certainly is fun to have one. “Your theme should be geared around the holiday and what is seasonably available. While you want your space to feel balanced and harmonious, it’s also interesting to add some whimsy and a little unexpected,” Sperling says. “Take a look around your home and consider the color palette and ways to bring in a few of the hues to tie things together.” You know that old adage about taking off one accessory before you leave the house? The same is true of party

decor. “We believe in ‘less is more.’ On your table use pieces that feel intentional and purposeful. That could mean not having all of your water glasses match or your cloth napkins can each be different (they should just have one common element that ties them together). Once your table is decorated and you’re feeling good about it, walk away for a bit. Let it marinate and see how you feel about it with fresh eyes. Perfectly imperfect is OK,” she says. And throwing a dinner party doesn’t have to break the bank or send you on an endless scavenger hunt to buy all new

everything (and then find a place to store it all later). Sperling adds, “Always try and use what you have first. Gather any potential pieces you might want to use — dishes, silverware, glassware, pitchers, candles, etc. — and put them all together in one place, then start to play. You will be surprised by what you find hidden in your cabinets, storage and linen closets.”

DESIGNING YOUR TABLESCAPE

“For this tablescape we went with a “foraged-andfound” theme. It originated from our love of clay pottery and wanting our dinner table to feel earthy, organic and rich in textures. We chose a charcoal clay pitcher from Oaxaca, Mexico, as our inspiration piece and built around that,” Sperling explains. “Pick one or

two items that you love and start to build. Think about the different textures and elements that can be added that will complement your inspiration pieces. Here, we added brass silverware and picked three different types of water glasses with varying heights and styles. While all the candles have brass holders, they are different heights and styles. Again, mixing it up while maintaining a common thread. We felt the table needed a bit more color so we went to a local fabric store and found the perfect runner.” Sperling admits that flowers and candles are a tried-and-true staple — and for good reason. Lit candles on a table add beauty and warmth, while florals create an earthiness. She says a great insider tip is to take a look outside your own front door and see what you can find to incorporate into your design. “Grab your garden shears and take them with you while you are out hiking on the beautiful Marin trails. Add a fresh sprig of mint or rosemary to your napkins tied with twine or ribbon. And look at what you have in your gift-wrapping bin before heading out to purchase anything,” she advises.

ADD THOUGHTFUL TOUCHES

If there will be kids attending your gathering, do something special for them, too — after all, seeing the joy in their faces only adds to the festive holiday feeling. Sperling points out that including an activity on the kids’ table is a great way to start. She also suggests keeping the decor similar to the adults’ table but making it a little more playful. And of course, you can never go wrong with dessert. “We love sweet little individual cupcakes or a personalized bag filled with candy,” she says. It is gift-giving season, so consider putting together a little something to give to each of your guests as they depart. “Think of something they can use or display,” Sperling says. “A small candle, a bundle of fresh veggies or fruit from your garden, or even a small vase with fresh or dried florals. While gifts are not necessary, it can be a small reminder of a great time with a thoughtful host.” Visit The Still Collective’s new retail store STILL, 562 San Anselmo Avenue, San Anselmo.

On the mainland, Palazzo Avino (from $567 per night; www. palazzoavino.com) offers a respite from the crowds in places like Amalfi and Positano. In the medieval hilltop village of Ravello, the hotel reopens in April with a new tower suite designed by architect Giuliano Dell’Uva and offering Italy’s most decadent aperitivo: fresh local lobster paired with a new white wine created by the sisters who own the hotel.

Sea Ranch:

About two hours north of Marin, Sea Ranch has officially entered a new era with the completion of its extensive multiyear revitalization project. Originally built in the ‘60s, the groundbreaking community brought together a group of legendary architects inspired by the principle of harmony with nature. Taking cues from a remarkably sturdy barn built by German farmers in the 1800s — it still sits in arrested decay on the property — they built structures with pitched roofs, partially facing the ocean to withstand the Northern California coastline’s howling winds. Renovation work on the lodge, a community gathering place, began in 2018, and while public spaces opened in 2021, guest rooms, conceived by San Francisco–based design collective NICOLEHOLLIS, opened this summer. Just as architects originally intended, the 17 renovated rooms at The Sea Ranch Lodge (from $500 per night; www.thesearanchlodge. com) inspire guests to live lightly on the land. Guest rooms’ marine and burnt orange accents complement the warm wooden ceilings, floors and sea views. Guests can watch the sunrise over the Pacific Ocean while cozying up on a cushioned window bench. Through the lodge’s new Sea Ranch Living program, guests looking for more space can book one of seven rental homes designed by original Sea Ranch architects such as Charles Moore and Donlyn Lyndon.

Bordeaux: 60 december 2023 marin living.

While Paris will be getting all the buzz, 2024 is the year to check out France’s other cultural hub, Bordeaux, which has new hotels, art exhibitions and wine offerings. Bassins des Lumières (www.bassinslumieres.com), the largest digital art space in France, is debuting two new exhibitions in February, including a show where visitors follow in the footsteps of master Dutch painters from Vermeer to Van Gogh and an exhibition on Piet Mondrian. La Cité du Vin (www.laciteduvin.com), a wine museum and cultural center in a curvaceous building inspired by swirling wine in a glass, has redesigned its Permanent Exhibition — guests explore 18 interactive thematic spaces like a sensory area where visitors experience the aromas, colors and textures of wine.

A N A LT E R N AT I V E T O PA R I S

Just north of the city center in bourgeois Chartrons, the brand spanking new Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes (price not available at press time; www.all.accor. com), designed by Philippe Starck, is in the former wine cellars of the Calvet winery. A true five-star property, it has a large terrace, a Japanese-inspired bar and a spa with an indoor pool. On the edge of the city, Domaine de Raba (from $365 per night; www.domainederaba-talence. com), a wine estate with park-like grounds, has expanded with new accommodations, including four spring-inspired roof lodges and a larger spa with a glass roof, terracotta floors and a Moroccan spa menu. Olympics fans take note. The city will host much of the 2024 Olympic Games soccer tournament, including men’s and women’s matches, at Matmut Atlantique stadium.

Aspen is undeniably America’s glitziest mountain town. (What other ski town has a snowcat-towed champagne bar?) Its appeal lies also in its storybook charm and limited growth. There hasn’t been a significant lift and terrain addition to legendary Aspen Mountain, one of Aspen Snowmass’ four ski hills, since the opening of the Silver Queen Gondola in December of 1985, but that is changing this ski season. The new high-speed quad Hero’s on Aspen Mountain is increasing the mountain’s lift-

In addition to favorites like the Little Nell and Hotel Jerome, visitors can check into the new MOLLIE Aspen (from $500 per night; www.mollieaspen.com), which opened this month in the heart of town, offering a modern take on alpine living. In Aspen’s West End, Aspen Meadows Resort (from $359 per night; www.aspen meadows.com) unveiled a Bauhausinspired renovation earlier this year. New restaurants and cafes are also elevating Aspen’s already excellent dining scene, such as Milanese-style bakery and coffee bar Saint Ambroeus (www. santambroeus.com) and Alpina (www. herehouse.club/alpina), a restaurant focused on lunch and happy hour (think crostini topped with whipped ricotta and stone fruit, and a bison burger). The area is not only a winter destination: this summer will mark the 75th anniversary of the Aspen Music Festival and School (www.aspenmusicfestival. com), one of the country’s most renowned classical music festivals.

A NEW DAW Lucid Motors has created an EV that is leaving us all in awe. By Nick Czap

THE CLOSE OBSERVER OF THE automotive industry knows that most new cars are the furthest thing from new. Despite the fanfare with which the latest models are trotted out — distinguished from last season’s fashions by bigger grilles, slimmer headlights or ever more bulbous or angular bodywork — the truth is that from generation to generation, the degree of innovation beneath the skin tends to be incremental at best. But once in a great while something radical emerges, no mere iteration of yesterday, but an evolutionary leap propelled by a vision of tomorrow. The all-electric Lucid Air Grand Touring is such a machine. Designed and engineered at 74 december 2023 marin living.

The all-electric Lucid Air Grand Touring is a game changer for the EV industry.

Lucid Motors’ global headquarters in Northern California, assembled at North America’s first purpose-built EV factory in Casa Grande, Arizona, and available for test drives at Lucid’s newest U.S. showroom in The Village at Corte Madera, it charges faster and goes farther than any other production EV on the road, and it looks like nothing else on earth. Head-on, the Air Grand Touring projects a certain robotic aura, calling to mind the visor of a Daft Punk helmet. Behind its sleek front fascia, an incredibly compact front-end module houses a pair of headlamps with nearly 9,000 micro lenses, long-range radar, local short-range stitch radar, 120-degree solid-state lidar, computer-

controlled shutters that modulate the flow of air into a vortex induction cooling system, and an energy-absorbing bumper system. In profile, the Air Grand Touring is deliciously sleek, and thanks to Jean-Charles Monnet — who before serving as Lucid Motors’ head of aerodynamics honed his skills at the Red Bull Racing Formula 1 Team — it’s the most aerodynamically efficient production car on the market. The overhangs (the parts of the car extending past the front and rear wheels) are remarkably short, the result being that while the Air Grand Touring is roughly the size of a BMW 5 Series or a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, it boasts the larger interior space of a BMW 7 Series or Mercedes-Benz S-Class and a class-leading 739 liters of luggage space. When it came to creating an all-electric car as dynamic as it is luxurious, there was no one better suited to the task than Lucid Motors’ CEO and CTO, Peter Rawlinson. Before Lucid, Rawlinson was vice president of vehicle engineering at Tesla and chief engineer of the Model S; before that he served as chief engineer at Lotus and principal engineer at Jaguar. Rawlinson oversaw Lucid’s in-house development of a series of proprietary systems, from an ultra-compact, ultra-efficient and extremely energy-dense electric motor to onboard charging, battery management and thermal systems, which together enable extraordinarily fast charging speeds (300 miles in less than 22 minutes), a phenomenal 516-mile range and supercar performance, while maximizing interior space.

The Air Grand Touring is deliciously sleek, and it’s the most aerodynamically efficient production car on the market.”

There’s a moment of cognitive dissonance as you ease yourself in, for how do you reconcile the disparity between the outer and inner dimensions? But in no time you find yourself enchanted by a wonderfully bright and airy cabin whose gently curvilinear surfaces clad in Alcantara, Nappa leather, open-pore wood and alpaca wool textile are as pleasing to the touch as they are to the eye. Inspired by midcentury modern aesthetics, with color schemes like Santa Cruz and Tahoe channeling the natural tones of the California coast and the Sierra Nevada, the effect is more architectural than automotive, more Neutra than Detroit. And yet there’s a steering wheel, and a supremely uncluttered dash whose toggles click deliciously, and deep in the footwell, there’s a pedal. When you press it to the floor, you are suddenly no longer here but somewhere else entirely. In an instant you know without question that the Lucid Air Grand Touring is something very different, something new. marin living. december 2023 75

The resort has just undergone a top-to-toe refurbishment.

With the gorgeous tropical garden setting, a mantra of balance permeates every inch of the property, whose original design cues came from the Forbidden Purple City, the onetime imperial family home of walled palaces and shrines in nearby Huế, Vietnam’s ancient capital. Accented with chic black rattan furniture and lighter-than-air gauzy white curtains, its 87 villas (there are one-, two- and three-bedroom options) exude an air of quiet luxury; each has a private courtyard and plunge pool, which makes the suites tough to venture away from, although the sparkling swimming pool

With relaxation positively encouraged at TIA and the spa, all accented by a garden of subtropical dragon trees, showy bougainvillea, fragrant Arabian jasmine and a meditative central waterfall pool, its 22-room wellness center is a crown jewel. Perks of the unique “spa-inclusive” concept here mean that every guest can schedule two treatments per day with holistic therapies emphasized (think: therapeutic singing bowl sound baths and crystal wand massages to amplify inner energies, although facials and salon services are options too, as is a new steam-sauna-ice hydro circuit). Homelessness has a cure...homes! Our doors have welcomed families and adults in crisis since 1974, helping them open paths to housing and health. COMPASSION

COUNTS

Doing good things for other people can be just as rewarding for the participants as it is for the recipients. By Daniel Jewett

WHEN SAN ANSELMO’S Annelise Bauer’s twin boys heard a favorite El Salvadoran teaching assistant at their school say that some schools in his country didn’t have a roof and badly needed supplies, they leapt into action gathering donated materials to send to educators there. “They really loved the feeling of doing things for other people with other people and so we started a club at lunch,” says Bauer, who studied education and got her teaching certificate at Princeton. That 2014 effort soon grew into the organization Children for Change (C4C, www. children4change.org), which offers an integrated in-school program once a week for pre-kindergarten to eighth grade students in Marin that focuses on the power of empathy and volunteering. 88 december 2023 marin living.

“Nonprofit organizations aren’t necessarily looking for young people to come and volunteer, so we helped create and coax those volunteer opportunities out,” says Bauer. “We are taking the long view that we’re creating these habits of heart and mind, and that hopefully the students will find what they are passionate about and do something to help their community.” The 45-minute weekly program offers kids the opportunity to hear from speakers, including county supervisors, learn and ask questions and also work on in-class projects like putting together sack meals for St. Vincent de Paul or decorating boxes for the Homeward Bound Bagster program. And those who want to take it further can sign up for after-school volunteer opportunities — C4C partners with 30-plus local nonprofits in Marin. “It’s been great to see not only what kids can do, but the ways in which they can interact beautifully

with individuals,” Bauer says, highlighting the volunteer work the group does, like playing bingo with folks with mental and physical disabilities. “It’s so humanizing for the students doing something that’s joyful with people who are slightly different from them, or experience or learn differently than them.” According to Bauer, young people can have a significant power and impact as change makers, particularly when they speak before a group like the county board of supervisors. “When students tell the supervisors that they really should consider banning flavored vape because they see their friends in the bathroom vaping, that is more powerful than an adult saying the same thing.” Bauer adds that one of the best things about the program is watching the change it can make in the lives of the student participants. A particularly striking example involves a student named Ella, who sat in the C4C sessions for a whole year and never said a word. The next year she suddenly exclaimed: “I have this idea. I know that some people can’t afford Halloween costumes; I think we should have a Halloween costume drive and I’ll lead it.” And lead it Ella did, talking to large groups of students at multiple schools and finally, in partnership with Bloom Marin, she helped to secure 300 costumes to give to underrepresented kids. “She presented those costumes with pride to Bloom for distribution and watched as kid after kid came to pick one up,” Bauer says. “That’s the change we are trying to support.”
