On behalf of the College of Fine Arts and Communications and the BRAVO! team, it is my pleasure to welcome you to this special concert honoring America's veterans. The BRAVO! Professional Performing Arts Series presents unparalleled performances to BYU students, faculty, staff, and the community. We search the globe for artists who are not only masters of their craft—whose performances will make you want to shout "Bravo!"—but also demonstrate gifts for mentoring

inspiring greatness and creativity through their art. To inspire others through the arts is exactly what we strive to do here at BYU. Music, dance, and theatre have a powerful ability to enrich, heal, connect, and teach us, often in ways that nothing else can. In the words of Karl Paulnack, “Art is one of the ways in which we say, ‘I am alive, and my life has meaning.’” I hope that the beauty and truth you find in this and other BRAVO! performances this season will add meaning and purpose to life for you, in whatever way you need it. Thank you for spending an evening with us!

Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson

Lt. Governor Deidre Henderson

Featured speaker

Deidre M. Henderson is Utah’s ninth lieutenant governor, serving as the Beehive State’s second highest elected official, chief election officer, and secretary of state. Lt. Gov. Henderson has dedicated her time in office to removing barriers to success for Utahns, ensuring elections are well run, and bolstering the state’s relationship with Native American tribes.

While in office, Lt. Gov. Henderson created Return Utah, a firstin-the-nation state program for Utahns who have been out of the workforce for an extended period. The program helps Utahns gain relevant experience as they re-enter the workforce.

She also turned tragedy into triumph. After her cousin Mandy Mayne was ambushed and killed in 2022, Lt. Gov. Henderson set out on a statewide tour with the Mayne family to address how Utah responds to domestic violence incidents. After months of hard work, the Legislature unanimously passed S.B. 117, a bill that expanded tools for law enforcement to help victims of intimate partner violence.

Lt. Gov. Henderson works closely with Utah’s eight federally recognized Native American tribes on infrastructure, education, healthcare, and economic development issues. Her work with leaders from the Navajo Nation and southeastern Utah helped secure a deal to bring running water to the Diné community of Westwater.

Lt. Gov. Henderson served eight years in the Utah Senate representing south Utah County. As a senator, she built a reputation as a strong conservative and champion of women and families.

While serving as lieutenant governor, she returned to college to earn a bachelor’s degree in history from Brigham Young University. Her passion for history is reflected in her own career as she stands on the shoulders of Utah’s many history-making women.

Lt. Gov. Henderson and her husband Gabe reside in Spanish Fork and love spending time with family, going to the theater, and visiting rural Utah.

BYU Wind Symphony

The finest woodwind, brass, and percussion players at Brigham Young University perform with the Wind Symphony, under the direction of Shawn Smith. The BYU Wind Symphony maintains an active performance schedule with programming that ranges from wind band classics to some of the newest wind repertoire. Participation in commissioning consortiums and hosting composers and guest conductors on campus offers ensemble members wonderful musical experiences.

In addition to on-campus concerts, the ensemble has been honored with performances at the Music Educators National Conference and Convention; the College Band Directors Association, National and Division Conventions; and the American Bandmasters Association National Conference. The BYU Wind Symphony has recently been honored with an invitation to perform at the 2024 International Conference of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, in South Korea.

As BYU’s premier wind band, the Wind Symphony has been presented in many of the United States, and in over twenty countries—including China, Japan, South Korea, Mongolia, Australia, New Zealand, and many European countries.

“We were so honored to have the BYU Wind Symphony perform… Your presentation was outstanding… All who attended were extremely impressed, particularly the ambassadors and diplomats. It was a beautiful program… Thank you for your wonderful gifts.”

“The Wind Symphony of the Brigham Young University in Utah enthralled Manilans with its smooth, seamless, expressive rendition of a varied program pulled from its widely ranging repertoire... The young musicians, ages 16 to 28, impressively rose to both the technical and interpretive demands of every piece, revealing exceptional training and discipline no less than inherent musicality and solid musicianship... One could go on and on with the ensemble’s remarkable performance because the audience remained seated even after four encores!”
